The main rhythm is in 7/16 with kicks on the 1 and 4 and snare on the 6. Danny's also playing a 3/16 ostinato with his right hand on top of this, so it's a polymetric groove. You can also think of the whole thing as being in 21/16, since it takes three repetitions of the 7/16 pattern to sync up with the ostinato again.
Please start appreciating the bassist in TOOL. Justin is brilliant and all the most popular songs such as Schism, Vicarious, 46&2, The Pot, Sober, Pneuma, Invincible etc. would not exist without this bassist. I love it when there's a bass solo and someone keeps saying that Danny is good on drums... as if no one else was in the band except Danny.
Just a quick note/correction, Justin didn’t play on Sober or the Undertow album. That was Paul D’amore (sp?) but beyond that I absolutely agree. The bass is very under appreciated.
Me and my husband have seen them 7 times in the past three years and it is never enough. Can't wait to see them on Feb 12th! Best band ever ❤ and this song, like almost all of their art, is a masterpiece!
i only pray to see them live, but it seems tool doesn't like latin america, they never set a foot in this part of the world, really sad but been i tool fan all my life, i'm glad that u have the chance to experience tool live, congrats !
They are playing in Stockholm (again..) and I live in Gothenburg. I've seen them once and it was amazing but idk if I want to travel 500km just to see them again. Wish they could just come to my hometown
the best way to introduce yourself to Tool is just listen straight through the first time, let the sonic wave wash over you, no lyrics just let it hit you. Next you get the lyrics and try and solve the time measures. Then you turn off all the lights and put on your headphones and now armed with the lyrics you let yourself drift into the madness
Guitar has a 7/8 feel, rendered as 3+2+2. Bass has a 7/4 feel. 7empest also has this 7 feel but they do some cool things with it. Around the 8 minute area, they move the 3 around in the meter like so: a measure of 2+2+3, then 2+3+2, then 3+2+2, then repeat. Beautiful.
I saw Tool live last year, and this song (amongst others) is wild to experience live because of all the lights and visuals they utilize for their live shows. It's a hell of an experience.
@sharoncarlisle9453 That was probably the best sounding show of their's I've been to. Saw them there back in the day when it was Ford Center. Seen them in KC, Tulsa, Wichita...by far the best sound so far. 👌
this song is in 7/4 from start to finish. this time the guitar is the pulse of the song but it's 7/8 throughout. the drums starts in 3/4, then when it comes in full, Danny's playing a 3/4 beat over a 4/4 beat. (3+4 =7) 😌
7/4 or 7/8 . The more you try to catch the beat. The more you struggle. You need to just follow along without thinking about it. Then youll find it just without looking for it. You find it quicker when you don't only listen but also feeeeeel it out. Or find the snare hits lol its fun
My ear always hear beat in polyrhythm 1. 2. 3. 4..123 theme restart lol I hope that makes some sense to anybody 😆 but it's how I dance to it persay ✌️🤘Tool babay
This I believe to be sort of an ode to aging and trying to still hold on to the past and feeling of being young. Could be a direct introspection of the band themselves and the fact they had a 14 year hiatus prior to this album and came back as relevant as ever. That’s really hard to do. To disappear out of the spot light and come back stronger then ever.
Forgive so many comments on the poly rythms but love it it's a vibe it'll always come . THE MINDF ""K yup best way to put it lol lovin' these and another proper thx to Russ 🤘🔥🔥
@AnthonyRay Like I said before, I'm adding 3 bedrooms to my house in Hawaii, so I'll do more once that project is completed. Of all the reactors, you're definitely my favorite and it's not just because 🥰 It's because your breakdowns are spot on. You really go above and beyond to understand the music from the perspective of the artist. And also because you respect Tool. You might wanna ck out AEnema...a favorite of mine because it's about how LA needs to be flushed away 💜
Just listen to TOOL over and over again, you have to read the lyrics, they may change your view, trying to figure out their timing is a waste of time, they are AMAZING! Over 30 years of excellent music, I suggest listening with head phones from early to present, you will be blown away!!!
Tool's logo on this album is a hypodermic needle . If you fold the image in half and you could see both images it would be a needle and the top of a spiral.
@@j.t.3798 the word tool. If you fold it between the O's it is a hypodermic needle. Draw it on some thin paper and try. On the release of the album you could purchase a limited edition version that had glasses and other images you could view with them.
I used to drum snare in a drum corps and we had to count weird ass time signatures all the time. I don't bother with Tool, but I can understand the need to figure it out. tbh, I just love bobbing along with the tempo rather than downbeats I think.
lmao @ the detour on the album art. No answers for you there, but I like the 'eyes' interpretation. the white part actually seems 'deeper' to me, like it spirals down into it.
As mentioned, the instruments were simultaneously playing different time signatures. There was a bass solo.. Adam used his “pull-through” technique to create that chugging guitar… so good.
The easiest way to break down the odd time signatures is to break things up into 2’s and 3’s. I think this is more of the way Tool things. Sometimes the rhythm might be 3 beats followed by 2 beats, instead of just 5 beats. It sounds slightly more syncopated when you count it that way. There ends up being a slight hesitation between 3 and 2. This also lends to having different instruments do different time signatures. It’s easier to play a 4/4 over the top of the 5/4 if it’s broken up that way. And at every 20 beats it all matches up again. This is a big part of what tool does.
6:23 on seeing the 🦟 mosquito eyes lol THIS ART I their work the visuals top knotch as well. Lol 👀I'm seeing a black 🐜 ant with an 🪖 army hat brooooo 😆 for real this is the thing I love about the visual artwork lol antwork lol that I'm seeing DAF👍🔥🔥🔥💪
Can someone close to this guy tell him to stop focusing on trying to count the signatures when listening to Tool, and just try to enjoy the song. The guy spent more time counting his fingers than actually taking the song in. Was really annoying.
Bro no one cares about you not caring what a songs time signature is! Read all the comments around yours. EVERYONE cares but you! lol Go back to the sandbox and play!
