This song goes with Parabol. Without the first song is doesn't math as well. When you play them both back to back the song has symmetry. The vocal line "ALIVE" is at the focus of the parabola. I see the Parabola as the a human life. Parabol is before or soul is fully born into this world. then parabola finishes the journey. and returns to the harmony that existed before. the last verus change from "that I am not alone" to "My own mortality" so now this is on the other side of the parabola. "We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion" initially the pain is of being born, then of the trials of life, and finally death. Math: Parabol is 3:05 / Parabola is 6:04 total 9:09 make the focus at 4:34 seconds of the two combined. subtract parabol and that puts you at 1:29 into Parabola.

Well that was a full circle moment, I recognized the beautiful intro only because of your King of Carrot Flowers intro a while ago which got me into Neutral Milk Hotel. They remind me of The Mountain Goats who I just adore. Perhaps the U shape aspect of the parabola is useful in interpretation of the song in the sense that what goes up must come down, and will eventually go up again. The song seems to celebrate that all the ups and downs constitute the gift that is life, and thus “all this pain is an illusion” ?

Judson needs to hear the whole Album. It is about the circle of life. The spiral. Which also means DNA is a spiral. Ride the spiral to the end makes us go where no ones been. I looked it up a parabola is an elongated circle.

A parabola is not a circle, though it could be described as being a partial ellipse. It has no true end and is never closed and the radius along the curve is not static and constantly changing. Think of it as an upside down mid-course modern rollercoaster hill. |Y|=X^2 is the most common equation to describe a parabola. /geek hat off

When ever I play this song, I’ve never tuned to drop B. I just tune my low E down to B and the rest are standard, or half step low or what ever. It’s weird to hear this without the Parabol lead in.

Not to nitpick but the tuning isnt drop B. It's BEDGBE aka Standard Tuning but E is dropped to B and A is dropped to E. Just in case any other Tool fans want to learn it on guitar.

Judson did quite well trying to work out Parabola considering he's missing Parabol. Don't beat yourself up too much Richard, many a RU-vid reactor has made the same mistake before.
