The other drummer is Tim "Herb" Alexander from Primus. I would say Tim and Danny are on the same level. Both are absolute beasts behind the kit. Both are some of my favorite drummers of all time. I saw Tool and Primus together a few times in the Bay Area in the 90s. Those guys are old friends. Larry LaLonde was up there actually.
If you can catch Les with another one of his groups you can't go wrong with an Oysterhead video. Another supergroup with Les is Colonel Claypoolls Bucket of Bernie Brains. Les Claypool, Buckethead, Bernie Worrell, and Brain. Some truly amazing stuff to check out.
Maynard's version of Claypools antics is when he fronts Puscifer. The counting on Justins hammer ons reminds me of a bass tutorial he did for Aenema. 'Simultaneous' has a great bass track.
Great video. I'm pretty sure no one else plays like either Tool or Primus, mainly because no one else can. It's not often you get such influential yet such un-copyable bands
No idea where to throw down a comment with an artist/song suggest... but dabbling through your videos reminded me of an old band from Montreal called Unexpect. Their bassist (ChaothBass on RU-vid) is a rather unique artist to dissect given the instrument he plays along with the type of music that Unexpect played. Might make for a curious historical dive and analysis.
Tool did there videos like that on purpose when you finally see them way differnt than they sound james came out painted all blue with his hair in a green punk style mohawk first time i saw trhem live in 98
The two bands are very much about art as they are music. Primus is more funk style and TooL is more metal. One is a 3 piece and the other is a 4 piece. other than that they are very similar.
Tool doesn't allow people to video their shows (only the last song of the night). Maynard says its so the fans can enjoy the show instead of watching it through a device.
@@markfreeouf3453 To be perfectly honest Maynard is the reason there are no good videos of them on stage. At some point in the late 90's he just said screw you fans and stopped standing in the front of the stage like a typical vocalist. There are some videos of him singing with A Perfect Circle but he's not directly front and center stage, sort of offset 😄But at least not back beside the drumkit with a screen between him and the fans lol It seems Maynard has a genuine disdain for Tool fans and really, who can blame him 😆
Yeah when I saw them on the Fear Inoculum tour he explicitly discourages people from being on their phones. I think one time at the end he said take one chance to take a pic/vid.
Found this out the hard way..my girlfriend got kicked out of the concert in SLC last week. She was a champ and asked me to stay and enjoy myself (which I did).
Danny and Les have been friends a long time...going back to Danny's Green Jello days...Danny actually played with The Claypool Lennon Delirium when their drummer had to cancel...saved some shows in like 2016...
Another fun one is from the channel Two Minutes To Late Night. A cover of Anthem from Rush with Claudio Sanchez on vocals, Bill Keliher on guitar (also the guitarist from Mutoid Man, can't remember his name), Danny Carey on drums, and Les Claypool playing Geddy's white Rickenbacker.
I saw Tool and Primus do a show together in like 2014 in Arizona. Unforgettable. I flew from NY just to see it because i didnt know if Tool would ever play a show again. But I've seen them 4 times after that and I am seeing them again in November.
Hadn’t seen this collab before.. 👌 The only part that didn’t feel like it worked to me was the bridge climax “Im praying for rain and…” that’s usually such beautiful brevity and just felt like it fell flat on this one. Oh well 🤷♂️
I seen this a while ago٫ its one hell of a show. Les dose such a beautiful job with his covers . He seems to put a lot of heart into it and keeps faithful to how the songs should be. Seriously go look up his cover his cover for Pigs. He's done a lot of Pink Floyd with Frog Brigade and thats one of my favorite covers he's done. ❤
Say what you want about Les Claypool, he might not be a great singer in the casual sense of the term but he's a phucking great vocalist who can convey emotion and epicness.
We got a Monday video!?!? So awesome Mark! I’ll take it! 3 vids a week would be so cool! I saw Les live yrs ago it was his side band flying frog brigade and he had 2 drummer it was so sik
I love your reviews , you really give in depth analysis of the music and you Get TOOL !! Will you be doing more TOOL material ? Rosetta Stoned and / or Invincible .. they both have heavy bass , Justins a machine !!! Looking forward to more Reaction videos , you're great !
Thank you so much for the nice words, that means a lot! Yes, “Rosetta Stoned” is scheduled in a few weeks actually. I did a poll for a full-album reaction, and so far Fear Inoculum is winning. More Tool soon! 😎
You DON'T know who Tim Alexander is?!?! SHAME! Also, isn't Aenima in 12/8? Sure you can count it in 4/4 with triplets but I personally find it easier to think in 12/8.
I was at this show, it was amazing. My Name is Mudd was great too. At the end where Les is trolling Justin. Also, seeing Les with no instrument was odd at first. Edit: Hearing this ANTI LA song in downtown LA was special. The crowd was here for it.
I love primus and tool but man I really can't stand les's treatment of the vocal in this. He literally doesn't sing a single pitch, and the song has such a beautiful vocal melody, especially the ending. Just seems like he's making fun of it.
They came out at the same time And when you said he was getting off on that rhythm... Its actually written that way if you listen to album.. It takes two drummers to come close to danny
I heard what Mark was talking about. It did sound like he got off beat for a bar. I’d have to listen to the recording to see if what you’re saying is true about it being written that way but that’s not how I remember it honestly
As someone who almost exclusively plays with a pick and used to know how to play this song front to back, that triplet feel at the end with a pick is really second nature when alternate picking. You just need to lock in on the one and the rest just kinda flows from there. That being said, locking in on the one with tool is sometimes easier said than done.
Mark, I would like to request you react to "Divine Fury" by the band Silver Talon. They are very reminiscent of Nevermore but the bassist is tricky to hear in the mix.
Excellent!!! 👍 Thanks for sharing this one, i never knew... As a side note, on their album "The Crybaby" from 2000, the Melvins did an amazing, awsome (14-minute) collab with Tool. It starts with a big call-and-response section between Dale Crover and Danney Carey. Fantastic! Check it out!
Hey Mark, your videos are amazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your life would be much easier if you use the keys to rewing (J), forward (L) and stop (space). Rock on!!!
Just a note about them being lumped together. I saw Primus open for Tool a few years back and the Tools fans could not have been less interested in Primus. It's a shame because they did an amazing show including something like a barbershop trio version of Tommy the Cat and included a very rare live track, Welcome to This World, in their set. On the upside, it allowed my son to get the set list from the Primus show, a nearly impossible feat when Primus is headlining.
Are they being grouped together by 40 year olds who recall when they both blew up and were the most technical of the popular rock bands in that moment?
The more I listen to this, the more I apreciate Maynard's performances (both live and studio). I respect Primus members, I know a song or two from the Tony hawk Pro Skater era, but I don't think the vocals are ok in this video. Nothing against the heart and emotion put in the performance, I just think Maynard's voice is more hopeful and is much more a song that should give us the strenght to react, to be the change needed in this world. Les seems more desperate and not giving a fuc* about society's decadence. Maybe things are much worst than 30 years ago, maybe this is the new message driven by this song. In the meanwhile, learn to swim and ride the spiral.
Different live Les perspective; Primus will be back, but right now he's touring with Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. More musicians, different songs, performing Pink Floyd's "Animals" album in its entirety in the middle of the set. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-whxYHdELLG8.html Sean Lennon on guitar from another of Les' bands, the Claypool Lennon Delirium. Edit: As someone who stood in the hell line at the Omni in Oakland to see Primus live in the late 80s, had one of their demos copied to cassette and purchased their first 6 albums as they were released I can tell you they were always dark and fun at the same time. That was definitely part of the appeal.
