Yes, drum tuning is a thing. Here's a quote from an interview with Danny: "In the studio I always try to tune the toms to the key of the song. Sometimes this doesn't work to well because all drums have a very limited range that they will resonate and project in, but usually I am able to get close to one of the notes in the dominate triad. Because 90% of Tools songs are in D, I always try to have them tuned to D, F, and A when playing live." The notes in the "dominate triad" are just the notes of the main chord. So if they're playing in the key of D minor, those notes will be D, F, and A. When it comes to Danny you've got to realize a couple things. He studied music for over three years at the University of Missouri and would have earned his degree in percussion, but he an opportunity to go on the road with a band. Years later he studied with Aloke Dutta, a Indian Drum master, learning the system of Indian tabla playing. He's also really in to sacred geometries and even perhaps numerology. This dude is so into his craft it's like a religion to him, and he's a high priest. That's the level that he operates on. For him it's all about expression through his art, and he works constantly to push that art forward, in his own way. By the way, what you guys are doing is really cool. Keep it up! Thanks!

I never liked that perspective of the lyrics. After starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and finding out Maynard is a brown belt in BJJ, this song takes such a different, humorous tone about the suffering of a white belt at the hands of an advanced jiu jitsu practitioner. Its more of a conversation between the two. "Choke this infant here before me".

Ænima was an absolute juggernaut of an album when it dropped in 96. A couple of tracks from Undertow gave them worldwide acclaim, but this album cemented them as absolute behemoths of progressive metal with mainstream rock appeal. Even the 'filler' tracks were interesting (Message to Harry Manbeck, an angry voicemail left by an italian dude who failed to gatecrash a party, set to some soothing but slightly sinister piano music, for one), nevermind the actual tracks and accompanying music videos. As great as Pushit is, damn near every track on the album is at that level, and has the same complex-but-cohesive feel you guys were picking up in this one

Thank you for covering my favorite Tool song and getting it! In addition to the cool tones and tempo changes, the lyrics are chilling and Maynard’s vocals near the end (“And when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay …”) are some of his best. Definitely give the Salival version a listen, too.

Tool's development is very interesting. Their early catalogue is heavy and direct. Their later catalogue is progressive and artistic. Aenima as an album sits in this pocket in between which is very experimental.

AEnima is a masterpiece album. Tool’s finest. Best record of the 90’s. Up there with best albums of all time. It’s funny, it’s not my favourite 90s album personally, but I know, without question, it is the best record of that decade. Eulogy and Third Eye are must reactions when you get there, I’d like to see you guys rock out to the more radio friendly Stinkfist too.

I discovered Undertow and Aenima as a 15/16/17 year old. Aenima changed my life. I know that Lateralus is considered their magnum opus, and I love it too, but Aenima is my favorite. Every single song on the album slaps. Hard. It is my number one greatest album.

Was mad at myself knowing I missed a couple opportunities in San Antonio when I was younger before they split up so I made damn sure I wasn’t missing them this time. Got 12th row floor seats and never sat down. Everyone on the floor stood the whole concert and we were all entranced. So happy they are back together and touring. My all time favorite T00L song. You guys are very responsive to mastery of instrumentation (including voice), but you require the pieces fit together (orchestration) rather than mere showboating. I love how you respond to the emotionally evocative aspect (including the lyrics), the dynamic swells and mood-altering transitions. You guys get what I love most about T00L. I really enjoy your obviously natural reactions as well. Keep the T00L reactions coming! Finally, you appreciate the visual soundscapes they “paint” with their music. Bravo!

You guys doing the Pneuma reaction was the first reaction video I ever watched! So you guys doing new Tool is always cool. I was living in London when this album was (well not yet) released, and me and some friends went to see Tool at the Astoria. We went off the back of Undertow, not even hearing the new album coming out the following week, and Pushit was firmly lodged into my brain that night. During the breakdown the puff was hitting hard, the booze was sloshin, and the whole back stage was wrapped around in a screen showing these Masai warriors jumping up and down crazy high, in super slow motion to the groove, as well as some weird shit with an elephant... it was an epic moment in time that to this day is clearly etched in my mind. Keep em coming :)

I just came back from my first ever (and sadly, maybe the last) Tool concert in Budapest. They played Push It. I like their newer sound more, from tuning point of view, but my god, it sounded epic live. Also, same thing with Sober. Much heavier than on the album. I have almost exclusively listened to Tool for 15+ years now, nothing comes even close, but seeing them live pushed the whole experience to levels I have never felt before. They finished with Invincible, incredible performance there as well. Pneuma... no explanation needed here. But Descending... put on the cherry on top of the cake for me personally. Never felt anything so immersive before as listening to it live, with closed eyes. I am so grateful that I lived to find them and see them live.

Damn I’m bummed you didn’t go into the lyrics at all. I love hearing your takes on songs. This song has some of my favorite Tool lyrics and clever use of pronunciation of phrases to make it ambiguous. This song was so instrumental for me when it came to dealing with my personal struggles surrounding religion during my teenage years. The theme of an oppressive relationship, drowning, losing one's self... the confusion rolling around in the sound. And then for it to build and Maynard screaming, "THERE'S NO LOVE IN FEAR!" This single song took so many of my blurry teenage emotions and snapped them into focus. So glad you guys did this track (and got to see the Tool show!). Forever one of my all-time favorites.

Another awesome reaction! Maynard definitely stands in the back, not only because it's about the music, not the front-man; he also does so for technical/production reasons, as he's stated having a beast like Danny playing behind him bleeds into his mic and effects his performance. Have a great one! PS Edit: Oh! You'll need to react to the Salival live version of this song, it's a completely different experience. You'll love it like new, all over again.
