It's not bongos it's an Indian instrument called a tabla. The drummer, Danny Carey was the student of an Indian tabla Maestro Alok Dutta. He's playing them on his drums by using a device which gives the tabla effect.
And to add to that, im pretty certain its actually his electric pads programmed to the tabla sound. I know he can play the actual tabla but it sounds to me that its his pads, based on some of the rolls and patterns he does (sounds like hes using sticks)
I’m atheist and this is probably my favorite song ever. It’s pure poetry. You don’t have to be religious to connect with the lyrics and message. It’s a very simple message. Not easy for us to put into practice but very simple!! Also Danny Cary is easily top 3 drummers in history.!!! 🐵
AcasualDream I’m a 34yo FANATIC with a LOT of shows under my belt. I’m seeing the HOLY QUARTET for my 1st time on May 5!!!! Lamb of God on the 11th. HUGE month for me...incubus, bring me the horizon, Slayer, Amon Amarth, Cannibal corpse, and MANY others.
I'm amazed the pastor didn't catch on the line "cut in two" and "cut it all right in two" it's a reference to king solomon's judgment when he proposed cutting in two a baby that was claimed by two women, one woman agreed saying that if she couldn't have him no one could while the real mother said spare the baby and give him to her. "Selfish ambitions"
Thought of that when heard it the first time. “Who cares if people cut something in two?” *glaring at Biblical reference about cutting baby in two. Ooooh 😳
So many religious people never give anything rock/heavy a chance. You guys are really refreshing! Thanks for your honest and well-thought out takes and appreciation.
well that has much more to do with the music type you like, not religion. if you e.g. listen to metal music of all kinds like me, then you wouldn't stop that because it just wouldnt make any sense. It's more like (with me), that I am a lil bit more careful when it comes to bands such as slaughter to prevail, which I musically like, but in some lyrics have a rather anti-religious narrative. (which I don't blame them for)
@@liam1912 100% - but there are some who think all heavy music is the same. That is what I was getting at. They hear a heavy riff and it's "NOPE!" (don't even bother looking at the lyrics or musicianship). These guys are clearly not like that. I was not implying that all heavy music is the same - some is pure crap - of course, all musical genres have everything from pure genius to pure drivel (which is also subjective, yes I know).
Thats true, my dad is mormon but thanks to him i started listening from kiss, nirvana, radiohead, tool to cannibal corpse, gorgororth and obituary and he likes them too!
Their deepest lyric in my opinion, humans have a nasty habit of taking our lives for granted, wether you believe in God or not the fact that you are alive with consciousness is nothing short of a miracle yet we still take it for granted
One of the best songs any human being has ever recorded period. This is the definition of a “modern classic” like I hope in 50 years they’re still examining this song like its Bach
I’m not religious myself, but knowing a pastor’s knowledge of spiritual and religious concepts, it’s good to hear him react to tool which always uses very very religious imagery
I was respecting this whole process until he said "it would take more faith to believe in an evolutionary world view than a Christian world view." There is a big fundamental difference between the two... particularly that evolution is a scientific theory which considers various pieces evidence that can be tested and measured, and it can be used to make predictions which might turn out to be correct or incorrect. The Christian world view is a belief system based on stories that must be either believed or not believed. I think that continuing to conflate the two is intellectually unforgivable, so for that reason, I'm out!
If I'm not mistaken, Aloke Dutta is who got Danny hooked on these type of drums and techniques after guest appearing on Tools re-version of Pushit found on the Salvial album. Pretty Flippin sweet!
Tabla are drums from India that are very finely tuned and played with intricacy and subtlety among Hindu and Sufi people to express mystical and spiritual concepts through music. I think that's why tabla drumming is appropriate for a song with such subtle and symbolic lyrics.
@@mkultra1982 Tablas are used in pop music here in India too. Has nothing to do with mysticism and spitituality. If anything, I suppose Tool were influenced by South Indian Carnatic music because of their use of polymeters and polyrythms in their traditional music.
FWIW guys, I can see that you both love Tool. There is always this conflict between the love of music, and modern 'Christian' Evangelicalism. What you don't understand yet, is that GOD SPEAKS THROUGH MUSIC (and art, and literature, etc.). GOD IS POWERFUL. He can do that! But back in my day (late 70s/early 80s), Tool would have been the scariest band of all, because they DO dabble in the occult. They are the first, and only band I know of to openly embrace the occult. And now I know more about it!
Oh, I understand that God speaks through music, and I hear him in Tool's. Regarding Tool dabbling in the occult, one misconception is that the occult is satanic or otherwise anti-Christian. Dabbling it is dangerous as dark powers may interfere, but it's also the basis for much of Christian Mysticism, where holy men were trying to better understand their relationship with God.
I've been a Tool fan for quite a long time. I also happen to be atheist although I genuinely appreciate and enjoy this channel. As a former musician I can tell you that Tool is a masterpiece in everything they do, musically. With all that said I think you dissected the song pretty well. Although, Maynard frequently paints a picture for his listeners that does not always speak for what the song is actually about. The "monkey" he speaks of is definitely human because he is very much a person who lives his life based on facts and not faith. I dont think he leans his lyrics toward a divine creator as if he actually believes that there is.
I would agree.. my take from it is that he is throwing evolution into the song with the monkey to human reference.. playing off of religion and saying why would god create humans that fight, kill, wield clubs and knives, sometimes even in the name of their chosen creator. Maynard, from all accounts including his own, is not a believer. He has some tough takes on christianity and religion in general. I do however respect some that choose to believe or live by a religion, it is good to believe in something, can help get you through things and can help you stay grounded. And while many believe in good things.. some obviously abuse religion, like anything that can be abused.. just often on grander scales.
I couldn't have said it better. I'm also an atheist but I subscribe to this channel. I love philosophical discussions, and a Tool critique is as philosophical as it comes.
I believe he may actually be referencing a quote in the movie “The Prophecy,” where Lucifer says something like, “how I love you talking monkeys for this... know more about war and treachery of the spirit than any angel.” It’s also safe to say that none of us personally know Maynard, and what his true beliefs are. However, we do know that he spends an awful lot of lyrics based on Biblical facts and reasoning. Which would lead me to believe that he is knowledgeable of the Bible, and does believe in a higher power. It’s highly doubtful that Maynard is an atheist. There are a lot of accounts of devout atheists turning to Christ, once the “truly” dive into the Word and understand our Creator.
@@DodeyPotroast Just because he is knowledgeable about the Bible, doesnt mean he believes in what's in it. I have friends that have read both the Old and New Testament and Quran but are devout atheists still. Just search around and you'll see interviews where he clearly says he despises organised religions. Now, he does come across as a spiritual person, but not necessarily a theist. But as you said none of us actually know what goes inside his head.
I am a blind musician who is a Christian and a very big fan of Tool. One thing I like about Maynard's lyrics is that they can be so broadly interpreted, no matter how you want to look at it, and he is very intelligent and does wonders with what he crafts. I would like to recommend another Tool song, titled Eulogy, it's off their Aenima album, one of my favorites by them. Thank you for doing these videos.
It's actually about Ron L. Hubbard, founder of Scientology...when he mentions a failed martyr...at first listen I thought it was about Jesus, as well...
@@JHayes37 I don't think it's one dimensional like that. If I HAD to put money on it being about one person, I'd actually go with Paul D'Armour, but I don't like going in that direction. From the tool FAQ: *The big question: Who is "Eulogy" about? As with most Tool songs, the song is vague enough that can be interpreted to be anyone / anything. The song is primarily about the death of something which most probably turned out to be a fake. Regarding the rumor that the band is no longer on good terms with Henry Rollins; he has recently been heard talking positively about Tool, saying he was unaware of any bad blood. In Modern Drummer (10/93), Danny mentions L. Ron Hubbard as the object of the song. One way or another, though, the song has a message that can stand apart from any specific target; the interpretation is left to you, and the specifics aren't too important."* Might I remind that the boys are always saying things to throw people off. Maybe, to Danny, the song is about Hubbard, but maybe not.
It's about all the ones you said, and also Kurt Cobain (legit) and more people... But the real person who is about it's you, yourself, your inner you, the human being behind your mask of person
Listening to this one day on the way I was literally God smacked. I have listened to this song hundreds of times, but for some reason I never really noticed the line "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here". For some reason this early morning it came through loud, clear, and undeniable! I was literally shaking and looking up at the stars passing through the trees in the darkness. I was drawn to tears and couldn't shake it off. For days every few hours those words blew through my mind. I knew I had to take a large step to get back to God. I had been approached by several over the last year or so to attend an ACT's retreat, and I always had a reason to blow it off. I knew I couldn't say no if I was approached about the next one. Naturally, I attended the next one, and it was the most healing and renewing experience of my life. 3 years have past and since then, and I am eternally grateful for Tool bringing me back to God, or should I say I love how the Lord brought me back to him through one of my favorite bands. I highly recommend ACT's to anyone out there. You can only be a retreatant once. There is a reason for that.
The "repugnance" begins as we begin our "schooling" and many, indoctrinated themselves, do everything possible to deny us our sensory abilities. We become abstract to the magical world around us.

Robert Houghton Thank you for listening and for doing this video. I love the way that you mention (at 18:43 ) the dividing of the veil (Matthew27:50,51) and how it was torn ‘Right in Two’ when Jesus died... you just gave a world of new meaning to this song for me. How easily misguided do we truly become. It’s easy to become bitter towards God. It is easy to point the finger at Adam. It is much harder to take responsibility for our own hearts. Only when we consider the dividing of the veil, are we able to clearly see the hope that exists only in the person of Christ.

@Bryan Mack I mean, just look at the lyrics at the end. To ascend you must die You must be crucified For our sins and our lies Good-bye Now, im an atheist, but I'm pretty sure i know what he's talking about.
You seem like a good person, Pastor. I've had issues in my life with people who call themselves Christians in the past. Mainly because they don't deserve to be called Christian. To be Christian is to be like Christ. And Christ taught unexceptionable love. I've met many "Christians" who have showed hate, or looked down on people who don't live a certain way. From watching you and how you handle people that talk badly toward you in the comment section, it seems like you are the type of person who spreads love to everyone. Thank you for that. You don't judge people for acting out of line(at least in the comment section). You embrace others thoughts and take what they say into consideration (from how I've seen you analyze some lyrics). I know I don't know you in real life, but this series is an amazing testimony towards who you are, your faith, and your God.
I was going to say something along the same lines. Good dude and clearly a good father. He doesn't understand evolution, but at least he's being kind to people. Being a human is hard work.
@Nunya Business I understand Christians are humans. And I would never expect anyone to be a saint, Christian or otherwise. But too often I've seen in churches, big and small, this attitude of disdain towards others they don't believe live up to their standards of what a good Christian/ person is supposed to be. Even though technically, according to the Bible, there are no good people. We are all unworthy. But Christ taught love. And I also understand their are Christians that aren't like this. I think Pastor Rob is a great example. And if this is how he leads his congregation, I'm sure they are great people as well. We are all human. And I believe no matter what your beliefs are, we can all use more love and understanding towards one another.
There are definitely some other Tool songs that would really make for interesting analysis . “Vicarious” “Parabol/Parabola”, “Jambi”, “Lateralus” “Eulogy” “Opiate”. Trust me, your subscribers won’t go anywhere if you throw in a Tool songs every couple weeks or so.
This song makes me sad in so many ways .. it describes the human nature in such a profound way. And its a sad truth . I would put this song up there with imagine by John Lennon which Maynard covered with a perfect circle. Just powerful in so many ways
Having seen Tool twice in concert, they sound just the same live. Their albums are not great musically because of clever studio mixing, this is how good they really sound. Thanks for your input and analysis!
Some of their songs which people describe as easy is actually not easy at all, his time changes that aren't noticed by non musicians is evidence of that. 46 and 2 is one of them
"These headphones are so awesome!" Brother, it's not the headphones that make it awesome, it's the experience that Tool creates that makes your headphones sound awesome! As I have commented once before, when I listen to Tool, so do my neighbors... Been on the Tool journey since '93.
I'm glad I happened upon your channel. I'm from a Christian background, but I always felt like sensoring yourself from the realities and dark parts creative people like Maynard express was wrong. I wanted to expose myself to music, especially punk when I was young, but I love many genres because I didn't believe the music would change my foundation and in the end it didn't. I have found many Christians afraid to expose themselves.
That's the really neat thing about good lyrics, you leave them vague enough that people can interpret a more personal meaning from them. It makes you feel a profound connection to the music that more "on the nose" lyrics lack. "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here" is an amazing lyric.

I always figured the song was about angels having a conversation about humans, and questioning why they were given free will, when they do so many horrible things to each other. I mean angels aren't human. They are their own "species" if you want to call it that. So its pretty likely some of our actions would confuse them. As to whether or not they'd actually question why God did anything in general. Well I doubt they would openly. We know what happened to the last angel that questioned God.
Well i really like your comment bro but the part where you say that you know "what happened to the last angel who questioned god" it almost sounds as if god was a dictator that would destroy and erase everything thats not on his standards or creatures that would question him wich is not true, satan wouldn't even exist anymore if it were so and us neither, as for the angels they could question god of his doings if they wanted to but they simply dont need it, why? Because god already revealed his plans to them even though he doesnt need to being who he is, because they were choosen as agents of his plan, sorry for the book i wrote up there with that horroble english and dont get me wrong im not implying that you said that in that way just that it was the way i heard it and i just wanted to comment about it

Lucifer then somehow became Gods dungeon keeper. Bound to torturing human souls that God willingly allows to come to him. Actually, God himself SENDS souls, to Lucifer, to torture for all eternity. God could very easily not do this, but he does so because people do not follow his commands. The premise is that humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes, according to Melchizedek. The pattern in 46&2 of the lyrics is loosely set to the Fibonacci sequence.
I love watching these. Thank you for responding to your viewers’ requests. Tool is a masterpiece band. Everything they do is with absolute mastery musically and purposeful lyrically. I don’t feel there are many in the echelon of skill and care to precision that this band practices. As a drummer I have to say that Danny Carey is probably the most creatively articulate drummer on the planet. Oh and those drums were not congas or bongos. They’re Tablas, an ancient percussion instrument from India. They use tablas in songs that deal with transcendental, spiritual topics to create an almost psychotropic element of all religions. Most religions have some sort of sacrament or protocol they take part in that induces a higher state of connection with a creator. Indians use bhang, Egyptians used the blue nile lotus, Rastafarians use ganja, Peruvians use ayahuasca, Christ fasted in the desert for 40 days which undoubtedly created a hallucinogenic state, also some say Moses burned the bush on the mount horeb and the type of plant he burned had a purpose. Possibly DMT (dymethyltryptamine) that allowed Moses to tap into a deeper frequency of communication with God or some entity similar to what LSD or Psylociben would do. Burning a psychedelic plant and inhaling the smoke is used by many cultures around the world to induce such a state. Anyways love the videos, keep it up. I think you are doing great work by connecting with people rather than separating yourselves from the “less than desirables” in society. Music connects people like nothing on the planet. I suggest Another song by tool, called vicarious. It’s not in the vain of spirituality but it further delves into the psychosis of man and violence. Powerful song. Peace 🙏

@SymbolicActs Who said anything about them questioning their faith? Nothing in my comment even suggests that as a possibility my friend I think you're making some correlations that aren't there. What I intended to make note of was the fact that this song feels and sounds psychotropic because of the use of instruments to form a soundscape of ancient spirituality....back when herbs and alchemy were a large part of worship to a creator. Plus the inclusion of Alex Gray's art throughout the entire album seems like a dead giveaway. Alex admits that the art is from his experiences on LSD and Ayahuasca that shaped his awareness of the divine interconnectedness of life and creation. The album cover represents the Godhead of ancient Hindu mysticism, Brahma - the God of creation. Not trying to break anyone's faith, just furthering understanding of the depth of a masterpiece.
Yep, they were tripping balls (no God), that was absolutely is a composite of past Religions, just like how all of Christians holidays and customs are, 25 December/Xmas Tree, Presents, Resurrection, so on and so forth ALL copied from others in the past - Christianity is the Apple of Religion, plagiarists and claim it is the best. Maybe this is a waste of time writing this, but it is a bit shallow to think that "Oh, evolutionary science must be faulty because they (people writing the article) can't even decide which one we actually evolved from"... Rather than simply joking about how stupid the theories of the articles are (or so some of us think they are), all the animals listed evolved from a common ancestor; an ancient unnamed mammal... Instead of thinking of it as a linear visual representation (how most do), it is actually more accurate to think as evolution as a tree, how one being can evolve into many different ones over millennia... There is a theory that humans came about because we were weaker monkeys in a tribe that were not the strongest swingers, so instead of going high into the trees to avoid predators, our ancestors came down from the trees and decided to form groups on the ground... A final note, no one is to say that the Bible does not work in metaphors... (I.E. God is natural selection and evolution, the dust is representative of the unicellular organisms that evolved into multicellular beings)
With respect, calling us "monkeys" wasn't evolutionary, it was just a way of degrading us. We didn't evolve from monkeys, rather, we and monkeys evolved separately from a common ancestor. As delicately and respectfully as possible, please explore the other side before ruling it out. Making fun of our relationships with other mammals doesn't help your followers. We can look at DNA, these days. These relationships are factual, not hearsay - we can literally see them. A lot of people watch and trust you guys, and steering them away from from what is common knowledge is a real disservice. I'm not exclusively talking about the secular world, either - even the Pope understands evolution. Saying "I'm no scientist" doesn't get you off the hook, because then your whole world view becomes an argument from ignorance. Please, please, please take a quick look at evolution, consider how the world would look without a divine creator, be honest, and sincerely try to understand it. You'll come to find it works perfectly fine without any magic or supernatural intervention, and if you can't, at least you'll have reasons to refute it. I decided I was an atheist at five years old when I saw a cat kill a bird (to briefly explain my perspective), and I still enjoy your videos and your theistic assessments. Man, when you said you were a creationist, though, all credibility just dissolved. You're in a position to help America catch up with the rest of the world on this. Peace
We share about 90% of DNA with a fruit fly as well. Doesnt mean we came from them. Jt doesnt mean we share a common ancestor. It just means God had a template to create life. X and Y chromosomes are in every living creature. Evolution was used to justify enslaving Africans for 200 years saying they were "less evolved" and weren't human.
@@Ylemonade No. 100% no. If you think science requires faith you don't understand science. Creation requires 100% faith. They are totally mutually exclusive, because if you are a creationist you have ignore huge amounts of evidence and scientific methodology. If you understand evolution then you know it requires absolutely no magic. If you say evolution has a guiding force, you're adding faith and complication to something that doesn't require it.
Wow, there are a lot of comments. I think tool is beyond talented. This pastor is cool in my opinion. He is very open minded, period. He speaks the truth about the Bible and knows his stuff. Maynard is so talented it’s amazing. The way he describes human nature is incredible.
My favorite song by tool. It makes me shed a few tears eveeytime I listen to it. The amount of passion that Maynard displays singing this just gets to me for some reason.
Hey! You seem like good people so I’ll try to be nice, but you’re level of understanding on evolution and genetics is quite embarrassing. Nobody ever said humans evolved from chimpanzees (or cats, or fruit flies etc....), the observation based on the evidence is that ALL animals share a common ancestry (including humans). Some creatures are “closer” to certain others, some are much much further removed from each other. The fact that we share a lot of dna in common with every other creature alive on the planet only backs up this observation. To reiterate, we did not evolve from chimpanzees! We and chimpanzees share a relatively recent common ancestor, hence the genetic similarity being so high in comparison to the other animals you mentioned. I’m really not an expert and even I can understand this at least to a very basic level. On a positive note, hope you keep listening to new and interesting music!
I was thinking the same thing. I don't mind them having a different view than me on where humans came from but when they want to start basically bashing people who believe in evolution, it's a bit much.
There is another thing about the "evidence" concerning evolution. Alot of this evidence is used daly in all kinds of medicine and biology. This kind of evidence scratches the paint of the other way of seeing the evidence that supports some kind of intelligence behind it all. You should have a look at some biological research videos. Inside natures giants is a good series.
Chris Cartwright, I agree to a large extent with the points you made. I just wanted to point out, in all fairness, that the same points back up his creationists beliefs. If God made everything, then it makes sense that he might use the same "building blocks" in all his creations. In fact, I have a hard time seeing why evolutionists and creationists are always at each others throats, when neither side can say for certain that God did not create humans *using* evolution.
Dude, this is so refreshing as a musician, a super fan of TOOL, and most importantly given the fact that I hang my hat on the Gospel of Christ. I've struggled a lot with being a fan due to Maynard's blatant disdain for God and religion (rightfully so, in many ways) and since I learned about Danney Carey's fascination with masonic esoteric belief systems. There is no way I can stop being inspired by their music, which is why I will always listen to it. What I find so refreshing about your approach is how focused you are in attempting to actually feel what they are expressing, both intellectually and musically, FIRST! This is one thing that gets so lost in the rhetoric of dogmatic religiosity that Jesus was preaching about in the first place! There are things about TOOL that we need to be careful about when listening, but when the Spirit of God gives you that freedom to learn from those who need Him the most, it goes to show how in tune with each other we can be, regardless of how each person feels. Now, we can only pray that the members of TOOL come to Christ, but while we are still here, we can praise God for the gifts He's given these men. God can use ANYTHING to His purpose, and does. Having TOOL as an influence has very positively shaped how I approach music, and for that, I give credit to God. Furthermore, how you break down your thoughts on the questions or problems posed by the lyrics written by Maynard is an excellent example of what it means to listen. I know I'm on a good one with this rant, but you've gained a new subscriber and I really appreciate what you're doing with this channel. Thank you for taking on what most mainstream believers wouldn't dare. This is truly an awesome way to connect with people on so many levels. Great job, and God bless!
Love the song, appreciate your thoughts on the theology side of it, but I just want to throw some education at your understanding of evolution. You are quite outspoken when someone misinterprets Christianity but seem to be hypocritically dismissive when it comes to evolution, something that you seem to know very little about and have massively misinterpreted. I'm going to lay out a quick argument here, but please look into the science yourself; there is only so much one can say in a RU-vid comment. Evolution does not say that we came from monkeys. Or that we are closely related to any other animal. What it does say is that "In the beginning" (see what I did there) life began through some process (probably a chemical reaction though I cannot rule out Divine Intervention) and then over billions of years and countless generations, that life mutated to adapt to changes in it's environment. Humans did not evolve from monkeys... Humans evolved from humans. But at some point in the VERY distant past, all primates (including humans) share a common ancestry. All that that means is that millions of years ago, that common ancestor split up into different groups and became separated and then each group began adapting separately to their environment. Over thousands of generations, they became separate species and one of those became us. The fact that we share DNA with all other known life on this planet is itself evidence that all life came from a common source. How similar our DNA is to, say, a fruit fly, is evidence of how long it has been since our common ancestor split up (for humans and fruit flies it's been a LONG time; 60ish percent is a very low number). If you really don't believe in evolution, you might want to research how agriculture works. Selective breeding and genetically modified organisms (GMO's) are just fancy terms for humans artificially evolving crops and livestock to be better food sources. Also, all the geological and cosmological evidence point to the Earth being here for a VERY long time. If you don't believe that, then I can understand why evolution would be difficult since evolution takes millions of years to have a noticeable effect. Please do educate yourself if you're going to actively ridicule something. I'm really not trying to be malevolent here, I just think it's important to counter misunderstandings of how science works, just as you think it important to counter misunderstandings of Christianity.
Interestingly enough, there is something in chemical thermodynamics called “the seed hypothesis.” Essentially, it posits that the chemical process required to “create life” couldn’t have taken place on the conditions we know to have existed on earth at the time. Chemical processes require very specific amounts of either endothermic or exothermic energy. Furthermore, particular agents denature under certain conditions as well. So, without some some of external intervening force, life would never have come to be. I should note, I am a Christian, so my worldview is biased, but much of my scientific research is actually led me toward the existence of God. I’m not a creationist, per se, though. I believe God created all that there is, but his “days” are quite more like eons, which could be an appropriate translation from the original text in Genesis. But I do appreciate your well written and succinct explanation of evolution.
Nicely put, A simplistic argument for evolution I would put to a Christian is Noah, if you believe the Bible that Noah and his family were the only people on earth after the flood, how do you explain all of the different races and religions of the world? If the Bible is correct then we all share a single common ancestor. Given the 3000-4000 years since the flood (taken from creation.com/the-date-of-noahs-flood) we've manged to colonize much of the planet and become a rainbow of different colors, talents and beliefs. That's only 150-200 generations, and look how different we all are, short, tall, fat, thin, brown, white, Christian, Atheist, Muslim, Hindu, Hare Krishna etc, smart, not so smart haha. Where do you think we'll be if we're given 4.5 billion years? Would any of us look like Noah anymore? will we even be on earth anymore?
Blonde Haywire with utmost respect creationism is not a science it’s a belief/point of view/explanation of something that religious folks don’t understand. I firmly believe in evolution, geology, astronomy....etc. we are all entitled to our own beliefs. No disrespect
The verse you had stuck in your mind is what I go to when I feel like I'm slipping in my faith. If you hear this song live, you can almost hear his voice tremble during this song. It's so powerful. This is TOOL and what they are about. Giving you that echo that just bounces around your skull from the inside until you understand it. Maynard is a powerful genius that writes with a golden pen.
Puscifer is MJK third band and The Humbling River would round out an understanding of Maynards spiritual journey from Judith (2000), Right in Two/Wings For Marie (2006), Humbling River (2009)
right on point my good man it's also referenced in Psalm 82 and Deuteronomy 32:8 [ESV] I've been saying for years that most Tool fans don't get it because it's an intertestimonial and a scriptural reference I'm totally surprised that the Pastor didn't get that...
I love that your willing to listen to tool I’m not a very religious person and I really appreciate the way you can take time to listen and react and the way you understand the song even though it’s different than my view Judith is about his anger with god right in two is about his anger with man
@@tootsierooney8345 Shit, I used the wrong spelling of of 'their', right?! I have dyslexia, I always struggle with that one, I usually catch it though, but were/where/ware/wear messes me up every time... Coming back to the topic; 'Opiate' should be the track most interesting for them to comment on, I'm surprised so few people call for it..
Vlad The Inhaler their is especially weird because the normal rule is i before e except after c, that’s a different misspelling than yours but still one people make
"It would take more faith to believe in evolution than in christianity." It really doesn't if you'd question he bible as much as you do evolution, because if you did you'd realize believing in God and thinking the earth is only a couple of thousand years old is the same as believing in Santa Claus.
Lemme throw my hat into the ring here. The bible technically isn't wrong, that the "world" was created in a matter of moments, if they are referring to the world as civilization. On the whole, we've only been here for a moment. The problem with the bible isn't its content but rather how people interpret it. When i was younger I thought the point was to take it literally. Starting to realise how naive I was and still tend to be. Couple that with the findings that there really was a massive flood, the younger dryas period, and the possibility of an advanced civilization thousands of years ago.... perhaps there's more we don't understand than we think.
Well I’d argue it’s longer than a few thousand years old. We have AD which means after death and BC which means before christ. So two thousand and twenty years after Christ we stand right now. There’s still lots of time in BC which Santa clause never existed back then but the creator still did.
Dude, the most INSANE thing is that at 16:18 he pulls up what he believes to be evidence against evolution, mocking how humans share DNA with various other animals. He states that cats share 90% DNA with humans, mice share 80% DNA with humans, cows share 70% DNA with humans, fruit flies share 60% DNA with humans. It's like golly there mister it almost seems like the closer in time the two species split apart historically the more DNA they share. Go figure us and apes share a high percentage 98% us and other mammals a bit less 85-90% and us and stuff further away like a fruit fly share less 60%. It's like that's the exact type of thing you'd expect to see if something like evolution were true.
in case no one said it yet, most of those strange noises are the bassist using effects. Justin Chancellor is probably one of the best in the business in making his bass not sound like a bass whenever its appropriate.
Thanks brothers! I’m a Christian who loves him some Tool and anything Maynard. You can just feel his struggles with faith and his pain through his whole discography. Looking forward to Tool’s 2019 album!
Most youth pastors were in their teens and early twenties during the 90s, so I'm sure a good selection of them were introduced to some great artists at the time.
The bonga like sounds are from an Indian instrument called Tabla. If anybody enjoyed that section, do look up Pushit (Salival - live) with Aloke Dutta. Another truly beautiful tool song.
As some one who literally left Christianity after 20 years because of this band- all I can say is keep listening. There is more truth in these words than your holy book. Think for yourself Question authority Spiral out, keep going.
As someone who went from Athiest to Thiest I disagree. I've learned that a lot of what we believe isn't even true. Evolution for example has been falsified. Again - Coming from someone who firmly believed in evolution. That's just one lie. With everything I've realized, I learned there is more to life, and that it is far more reasonable to believe in God.
SgtTeddybear59 You are so full of crap, evolution has been verified by every field of science thousands of times over, you do not go from a full understanding to not believing. You should be ashamed of yourself for being dishonest or uneducated.
I feel like you’re holding back because of what people may comment on here. I saw you got chills but held back from mentioning it, you can’t even say his name because you’re scared to say it wrong. Be yourself :)
I got that too. It could also be that so much is happening in this particular song that a second listen may remind him of that moment. I do appreciate him standing his ground as well.
Boot Hat I’m a big tool fan and an atheist and I actually really liked his first video even if I disagreed with some of what he said, I didn’t understand the hate
I felt he came on a bit too strong on approaching Judith, but he wasn't wrong with what he was interpreting. I understand where he was coming from. In this case, I felt his reaction was more appropriate for explaining, and honestly admitting what his beliefs were, without criticizing alternative viewpoints. To his credit, he didn't pretend his belief was superior, which was a fair review the song deserves.
I love the fact you keep an opened mind about, quite honestly, everything. You both have a keen intelligence that is both detail oriented as well as creative. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. And of course hats off to one of the most important songs of all time.
@@christaylor8271 I've always heard cut. And the difference there is so small as to be all but insignificant. Could be intentionally designed to be heard both ways, as they never include official lyrics.
After watching a few videos it seems like the pastor is actually starting to like the music , he dances more each time .I'm not a god person but I do love watching these
"Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here." Amazing breakdown my man, I'm so glad you appended this segment to the review, I think this is the sort of thing many people were wanting you to catch. Well done.
I watched all the Maynard videos in this channel and while I applaud the effort to go into subjects uncommon for religious people, as well as the evident appreciation for the artistry and detail in these songs, I must say it's a little depressing to see how you take anything that supports your dogma at face value, even if it's being presented in an allegorical or figurative manner; but instantly deflect to apologia, misinterpretation or rejection when it challenges said dogma. Most worrying of all is the tired mockery you make of evolution, one we've heard a million times before. If my impression of you from these videos is correct, you're intelligent people with a mind open enough, and a willingness to argue in good faith, to study ideas and understand them, even if they don't change your mind. You don't have to believe in it to understand how the theory claims it works, and you don't have to make a mockery of it to justify your position.
Unfortunately, the sad truth is he’s a prime example of a person that has been trained to question everything EXCEPT his religion. He clearly had a background in apologetics, which, I would argue, is actually more effective at cementing this kind of mindset vs the “intended” reason of being able to argue or “defend” your faith. The majority of the “defenses” aren’t actually real evidence or “facts” but verses that, while not always, but the majority of the time are misinterpretations or incorrect translations, but the apologist is often completely unaware of how questionable the English bible truly is when comparing it with the original Hebrew, Greek, and Latin writings, ESPECIALLY towards Hebrew. It was while learning Hebrew and seeing all the flaws for myself that had ALWAYS existed in my “infallible” book that the true absurdity of religion and the degree to which I had been brainwashed, by others that were themselves brainwashed, and that to continue the cycle would be the worst possible form of denial and sin against the very knowledge and truth I’m now enlightened to. So they can go on following their faith that is a melting pot of mistranslations and subsequent additions that piled misunderstanding on misunderstanding until it created its own current form of insanity. I’m just going to enjoy life best I can and hope the God this whole religion was based on has mellowed out by A LOT and isn’t as “unchanging” as I was taught.
I really appreciate your viewpoints and your reactions to the songs. That being said, i cannot support the dismissing of the fact, that while evolution is a theory (just like gravity), because its extremely hard to completely prove. But there are so many fact and so much data on evolution, its effects and its causes, that saying, that there was no evolution is like saying the earth is flat. I know that you probably wont agree with what i will say now (as you are a (seemingly at least partly) fundamentalist pastor), but hear me out. In my opinion faith should not try to "disprove" science or neglect it. Faith is on another level than science, it doesnt have to compete. Faith is something you believe in beyond the things you know. For example, if you apply this to your scientific knowledge about evolution, you could argue, that it was Gods plan to create us all in this fashion/method and that the teachings in the Bible are stories to help us understand what our place in this world might be. You could look at the universe, seeing how perfect and mathematical it was created over billions and billions of years, the architect being God.
A theory is actually very creditable. A hypothesis becomes a theory when it has been proved over and over again by reliable studies. Another similar term to a theory is a law. However, a law does not need to be backed up by a theory. Laws usually have more to do with mathematics. An example would be the law of thermodynamics. Theories are what is observable in nature, but don't necessarily have mathematical data behind it. Evolution is a perfect example of this.
