As with every reaction we do This is not an endorsement of the genre, the song or even the artists themselves. That is a matter of conscience. Our goal is to listen to each piece openly and objectively. Pointing out where it presents truth and error from a Christian worldview. This exercise is solely to help develop discernment and to show the often erroneous view the secular world has of Christianity as well as where they unintentionally get it right. It is important to note that we believe pure truth can only be found in Gods word.

‘I don’t know why I’m so attracted to the drummer in this song’. Just Danny Carey. It’s a totally normal reaction, no cause for alarm.
@joelcprice

I saw Danny play from like 15 feet away when he went on tour with Pygmy Love Circus in the early 2000's. His power as a drummer can't be understated. It isn't just the technique. It's in his ability to be nearly silent and then deafening in a fraction of a second. And he's always completely in control. There are a few drummers who break new ground consistently. He's one of them.

I believe Maynard wrote this song not necessarily from a Christian perspective, but from an outsider looking in. He's saying "you believed in Christ. You held faith through the worst trials anyone could ever face. If anyone deserves Heaven, if anyone deserves grace, it's you." I believe that is why he had the lyric of "please forgive this bold suggestion."

so Maynard's mother suffered a stroke or accident ( can't remember which ) which left her paralyzed and speechless. she was an avid Christian and her pastor told her that what had happened to her was god punishing her for her sins. Maynard is an atheist. this song is about his mothers suffering and how he learned to respect her beliefs even if he didn't share them. it is a song paying tribute to her indomitable will that let her keep her belief in the face of so much suffering and his respect for her. it's in my opinion one of if not the most profound songs of love and respect ever written.

Although Maynard has written a lot of lyrics that seem directly opposed to Christianity, he has actually stated on multiple occasions that he is not against religion ... just closed-mindedness. It has always been his mission to provoke thought and spiritual open-mindedness. He does definitely seem to have some Church-related scars and a complex relationship with Christianity ... but then again, who doesn't?

If you listen to Judith it's about his mother & what she & the family went through with her illness & how horribly her church reacted to it. She was loyal to the end though! Maynard does not believe in any god & it's separate from the anger he feels towards this particular church that his mother attended.

That's why it's dangerous to claim your Christian but not follow Gods word. It damages people and turns them against him. People don't understand that Christianity is not religion but a relationship with Christ. That's why so many kids raised Catholic turn away. They put man in power and feel religious acts will get you somewhere. Real Christians who follow Christ put Love above all. Being judgmental is not love.

It’s not being close minded and toxic, that’s what Satan wants you to believe, it’s telling you truths that you don’t want to here. You want to be lied to. You want to be absolved from any responsibility. You want to ride the top of the fence so that you can fall over to the “ right side” when everything comes to pass but you won’t be given that opportunity. Don’t you know that? Don’t you know how dangerous the mainstream is? I guess not. It’s amazing to me that people think there is no purpose to life and that we are hurling through space, uncontrollably. Yeah right. They want you to think that you are insignificant but let me tell you that you are not insignificant! You are perfectly created by God and he wants you to know and live your purpose in life. Turn off the mainstream and watch your life change for the better.

I've always taken it as him feeling upset at the trials she had to endure. She maintained her faith through it all, and it hurt Maynard to witness her devotion through the trials he felt she didn't deserve. She made it through her entire life this way. I always felt that it implied a possible backstory of him hoping she would abandon her faith because a God that put someone through the trials she endured didn't deserve her faith. Since she didn't falter, Maynard is demanding that she gets her wings. The anger and pain in his voice gives me this perspective. It is as though he is expressing the scenario he wants to happen and is playing it out in his thoughts during an emotional outburst. The rest of the song guided me towards processing it this way. She would never command wings if you take the entire beginning of the song and Part 1 as testament to her character. The ending of Part 2 contributes even more to it as him asking for her forgiveness just for suggesting she should tell her maker that it's time for her to come home (which is done far calmer than demanding wings). This ending also implies that Maynard has reached a certain peace in the thought of her entering heaven (or at least going home with her maker). It left me with the impression that he was happy for her conclusion. Her faith wasn't in vain. So it seems that his anger wasn't that she kept her faith, it wasn't at the trials she faced, and it wasn't at those that judged her. It was at the thought of her keeping her faith through the trials and still not making it into her heaven. Anger is a stage of grief that comes before acceptance. You could even argue that demanding wings falls within the bargaining category. The anger stage comes shortly after death and it is emotionally driven. It makes sense for him to fantasize about her entry into the heaven of the religion she put her entire life's faith into. It is a projection of his pain and anger into this emotionally driven daydream/fantasy... That's how I've always viewed it, anyway. Maynard famously takes scenarios/concepts/etc and breaking them down into their base concepts through representative metaphors that can be applied into however many ways the listeners chooses to interpret them. Even so, Wings for Marie seemed to be one of the few songs that he wrote more literally than others, and he tends to write songs as an experience more than a blatant narration. I wonder how many people will actually read that entire wall of text? Hahaha.... Tool songs can never be simply summarized.
@H8fulApe
@H8fulApe 4 года назад
@@ArtByCole that was very well put. I agree. The song was him coming to acceptance. Suggesting that she of all people deserve to be in heaven more than others. I've heard that humans even rise further above than angels when we go to heaven. But this song was more of a representation of his emotions.

What is Islam's approach to loss and the problem of pain? In Western theology, there's a paradox between the idea that a good God is capable of stopping all pain and lets pain happen anyway. Does Islam have a similar paradox regarding your perception of Allah (PBUH - I think I did that right?)

First off, as an ex-christian and current atheist, I want to thank you for your humility and willingness to find value in the secular arts, as well as being open to whatever discussions form out of this. That is something that was unfortunately lacking when I was growing up. Secondly, as a Tool fan, thank you for taking these two songs, as well as Judith, holistically and attempting to decipher the deeper psychological state of the artists involved. That can be hard for any of us coming at a work of art to do, no matter our assumed level of similarity between the artist and ourselves. Oh, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on Right In Two, as well. It may be a more theologically trying song, but I think it would bring some good conversation with it! Thirdly, to any Tool fans or atheists out there who are being 'dorks' about the content of these videos, get your 'stuff' together. Think about the disservice to thoughtful conversation you are doing by being closed-off and aggressive. If you are hurting because of religion or from general negativity around you, that is understandable, and please, talk to someone you trust open and honestly, or message me and I'll be happy to talk honestly with you, but please don't take your frustrations out on people who are attempting to build bridges between a different mindset and yourself. That's all I ask, as someone who is probably on your "side" of things. I spent the first 21 years of my life as an avid follower of the Bible, but I am now an unashamed atheist, so if there are any harsh negative thoughts you absolutely need to say, please just message me and I happily will talk with you about them, but please just don't flood these guys' video with crap. As the great Carl Sagan said, "We are the representatives of the cosmos; we are an example of what hydrogen atoms can do, given 15 billion years of cosmic evolution.", so let's try not to be destructive imbeciles with that responsibility. P.S. yes, I had harsher words to say before, but, due to the potentially sensitive viewership of this video, I edited myself. Anyone who doesn't edit ones' self, in sensitive circumstances, is most likely viewed by others as a 'turd'... if you would like the unedited version of what you are, and what the other words are, please message me. Edit: just saw that they have already reacted to Right In Two, just about to watch it :)

@@aaronvanpelt3000 good comment! I feel like your relationship to the secular arts - from the details in your comment - was similar to mine. I also feel like too many atheists and theists become very closed minded once they get their mind set. Too many times I see people who are in a closed mindset who argue their position with very little substance.

Sadly, those people don't even realize that they are in fact not Christians at all. Our purpose as Christians is to strive to live and love like Jesus did. Jesus loved EVERYONE. I held MANY assumptions about Christians prior to my acceptance of Jesus... thankfully, a VAST majority of Christians that I have gotten to know & fellowshipped with over the past 2 decades are NOTHING like what you have described to be your experience. My hope for you is that you will look past some of those assumptions, as justified as those assumptions might be, and give self professed Christians the opportunity to earn your trust and friendship. @@zar7518 There is I believe a contradiction there though. The bible is ultimately the word of men. So for Christians how do you reconcile that. For myself I struggled for many years. Raised in catholic schools I was atheistic/agnostic most of my life but in the last 5 or 6 years have become a Deist. I find it to likely that there is some sort of divine being. However I just don't feel the bible is the representation of that. I think we have to find that truth ourselves via prayer/meditation. The beauty of this concept is it allows for acceptance and respect for almost any other religion. because everyone communicates with God (or whatever you may call it) in their own way.

@Khellendross .... agree with almost everything you said, come let us reason together... we have to admit mankind has became way more untrustworthy overtime than it was in the beginning. Religion is about faith not proof. And I have faith in the men in the beginning of time that took the word of God from God and put it on paper for the first time that it is from God. I do not read updated versions of the Holy Bible I read only and study only Christianity threw the oldest text I can find. As a non believer, I really admire your appreciation of the lyrics Maynard created. You called him out on the two points I have about the song: No one can “demand” entrance to Heaven. And wings are an angel thing. However, I personally give MJK a bowing pass on both of these “infractions” not just because it adds weight to the song. But for the help it gives me and many others, when someone close to us dies. A skeptical mind doesn’t help me get a grip on belief of god. But when people die, I just have hope.

Fellow atheist here. Consider the fact that Maynard's mother spent 27-28 years immobilized due to cerebral haemorrage. She endured that and in Maynard's eyes she has earned her wings, her mobility, her acknowleged sanctity (as she percieves it). Her demanding to be let in also makes this point. She has probably seen it as a test of god and told Maynard that as well so of course when the trials were passed she'd demand to be let in, she paid the ticket so to speak, in her eyes.

I think you touched on every critical point that mattered on the Judith video! Hah. Lyrically, vocally, and musically Tool is one of the best bands to react to if you haven't experienced them before. MJK served in the military, and then went to art school. Per his autobiography, the biggest take away I got was that it helped him learn how to structure music and art in general. If you want to get more subscribers, I'd recommend a reaction video to an HD Nine inch nails concert performance of Terrible Lie. Very popular band, and that song touches on a lot of emotional and conflicting sentiments with Christianity and religion in general. I was in atheist, and you could say that Saul was an atheist in the Bible (helping to murder Christians even). But then Saul/Paul had an amazing experience with God and went on to carry Christianity all over his region and beyond way back then. Some say he was responsible for keeping Christianity alive and allowing it to be prevalent nowadays. Point is that some people are atheist on the timeline of their walk in this world. The rest is up to God and humans carrying out God's will. I'm not defending atheism, but rather pointing out that this life is a marathon rather than a race.

PLEASE do Tool - Parabol and Parabola!!! By far their most spiritually moving songs. 2 quotes from the song should be enough incentive: "This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality. Embrace this moment, remember, we are eternal. All this pain is an illusion." This line alone has saved my life and changed it completely for the better. Also : "Swirling round' this familiar parabol, spinning, weaving, round' each new experience. Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing." His music slowly transitioned from angry agnosticism/atheism mocking christianity into some of the most spiritually moving lyrics I have ever heard. Look at "Opiate", "Sober", "Eulogy". All older songs with this tone/theme. He has now obviously come to believe in SOMETHING. What that is he has not clearly defined but it is evident and beautiful to watch as I can personally relate to this same path he has had. Keep up the great work. Loving these Tool reactions!!!!! 👍👍

I personally don't believe in any god, but as long as you're good people - that's the only thing it takes for me to think of you as a good person. You two dudes seem like good people, and I wish you all the best.

The words that I hear (translate) in this song are: "For your sake mom, I hope you are right, because you deserve heaven." I am a deist. But I hope Judith was right, too. And I would hope that anyone of any faith (or non-faith) would have the same sentiments of other fellow human beings. When my mother was dying to pancreatic cancer, she was fearful she did not do enough in the eyes of God and Jesus. The only thing I could tell her was the truth as I believed it. "Mom. If anyone deserves to go to heaven, it is you." So yeah, this song resonates with me completely.

I have to say that even having heard this song many times this was the first time I heard it while reading the lyrics. I never thought that I would be crying as a result of doing so. The love he had for his mother. The obvious example she set. Just beautiful. The person he saw in his mother is the person we should all aspire to be for our kids, and my tears are for falling short of that. It's time to change.

I understand completely how he feels. My great grandmother was a Saint, to the truest extent I have ever seen with my own eyes. She didn't curse, didn't lie, she never even raised her voice. She was a Christian and believed with every cell in her body. I sat beside her when she passed away at 97 years old and she cried tears of joy as she asked me if I could hear the angels singing. Then the wolves descended dressed in sheep's wool. Maynard was not truly saying that she demand entrance to heaven. It was more so that she believed so wholly in a place that he didn't believe in, but it sounds nice. He knew that's where she wanted to go. He felt that if anyone deserved that peace, it was her. The same was I feel about my great grandmother.

Keep in mind old school Tool fans can be vicious. Maynard himself never really understood this. I read his book and he mentions how they would boo and throw stuff at opening acts. He had to start explaining stuff and suggest different outlooks during shows to hopefully make people more open minded and change, at least that's how I see it. Their early music was way more aggressive. He had a lot of anger and frustration he needed to let out. He said at one point he was either gonna become a serial killer or become an artist, basically. He then read a lot, opened his mind to other views and educated himself a lot more. But they say the band puts out ideas and we are the ones to explore that. Maynard isn't telling the listeners what to think or do. As always: Think for yourself. Question authority. It's a good thing to remember. Personally I do agree with organized religion. I come from both a family and country that is very religious and I saw more ignorance and negativity around that than with non religious people. I know nothing is black or white but I chose my path. I chose to acknowledge that I don't know everything and will very likely never know it all but based on my own logic, common sense, experiences, research, God can't be real. If he does exist, amazing! I would love to meet him but I doubt a humanoid with lots of power created it all. Unless it's some form of extraterrestrial intelligence. Possible. Anyways, I love these videos and thank you for listening to the good ones in the comments and moving forward. The internet is full of trolls and people having fun at the expense of others so please don't think all of us Tool fans are like that.

I still get chills when I listen to 10,000 days. I respect yalls analyses of the song, but I don’t think the theology you speak of is lost on Maynard. I think he is expressing his emotion and; anger, love,respect, and loss, and saying that if there is a heaven she does deserve to be there no matter what any theology or dogma has to say about it, if there is any compassion or justice in the universe then she has earned her right to look her maker in the eyes and say I deserve to be let into the kingdom so give me my wings. It sounds like he is angry for her, saying shake your fist and let them know “their pillar of faith has ascended!” I also think the wings are symbolic of freedom from the shackles that bound her to a wheel chair for so long on earth. She doesn’t just get working legs; she gets wings to soar through her nirvana. There is just so much emotion and powerful symbolism in this song it’s almost impossible not to get chills when you really hear it.
