In this video I go over The new Stanley SW 62 low angle jack plane and let you know what I think about it as a potential entrance into the fine woodworking side of hand tools. By no means do I believe that the LN or Veritas are bad planes, they are quite exceptional, but this video is to try and show the quality of a "budget" plane and if it can compete with the 2 big names at all. I hope one day to get my hands on all 3 planes and do a side by side as they are all truly unique.
The video is a bit longer than I expected so if you are looking for something specific on this tool I have the times that contain certain things listed below.
5:15- manufacturer mess up
6:03- description/ breakdown
6:14-7:13 biggest complaint
9:38- comparison to competitors
Lie-Nelson, 12:36-veritas
14:34- price
16:10- close

I have owned two of these Stanley No. 62's. Not that I bought two,, just that I had to return the first one. This was a year ago. "Why?", you ask? Well, everything at first looked great and the blade was super sharp right out of the box, the sole was flat and both sides were both flat and at 90º to the sole. But I couldn't get it to take an even shaving. Long story short, I discovered the blade bed, while very well machined, was very well machined .020" higher on the right hand side as compared to the left hand side, thus skewing the blade and causing it to project further on one side than the other. Amazon fast-tracked the return process and the replacement is very, very good. I'm not as enamored with the Norris style adjustment mechanism for lateral adjustments as you, so I'm reluctant to grind anything off the sides of the blade as that would change the geometry in the blade sharpening jigs I use. Oh, as is my practice, I bought a spare blade at the same time, but there are no Stanley made blades available, not even by calling Stanley's number in the literature that came with the plane, just one by Zeluga, No. ZL-12-142 is the Replacement Blade listed on Amazon for Stanley Jack Plane Model no 12-137 and 1-12-137. Never have had a response from them as to what kind of steel its made from or what its hardness on the Rockwell scale is.

I have this plane. The only disappointment was that the back handle was very loose. Trying to tighten the bold doesn't solve the problem. Still, I need to figure out what to do. A knife was sharp right after the box. After a quick sharpening, it was even sharper. I'm using it mostly working with oak. Overall, a good purchase.

Mine had the same problem out of the box. It seems the countersink for the screw is too deep. It might help if you put a spacer in it if you haven’t tried it yet.

Very nice review! As I have mentioned, I have never used a plane. I appreciate what you pointed out as the differences between this model and more expensive ones. It seems to be a no-brainer to me based on price alone. Awesome video!

12 Again Sports & Outdoors thanks! What makes this one special is the low angle the blade sits at. The angle helps cut knots and end fibers of the wood instead of pushing them over like a traditional hand plane would, Which would cause tear out (which is like the wood chunks out as you pass over it).

Stanley to me is worth the cost of admission! To me they are in my price range and if I don't need all the Thrills I can do just about anything with their tools. I think Aluminum is the ew way to cut on price and weight. I think the Al threads will hold out for a good long while.

Poorman's Stack I couldn’t have said it better! I’m working on the new block plane and chisel videos and hope to get them up soon. I can look past almost everything purely for the fact that the blades are A2 steel where the other budget competitors still won’t use it even if they charge more for their tools.

As far as price/functionality what do you think of it? Is it worth the price to you or would you save up and get the more expensive brand?
@JeanMinutile
@JeanMinutile 3 года назад
@@matthewvick4930 For context as far as I'm concerned I never owned or had access to more expensive planes (the only other planes I have are an old Stanley number 4 and a crappy block plane). This one was ready out of the box (straight sole, square sides and sharpened) and in France it is worth less than half the price of a Veritas or Lie Nielsen (closer to a third if you are patient enough to wait for a bargain price) one so I'm pretty happy with what I got. I bought this plane mainly to joint edges and square end grain (smoothing occasionally) and it seems to work pretty well for me. The only drawback is that I can't seem to find a way to have a replacement blade to have one grinded at a steeper angle for tough grained wood.
@matthewvick4930
@matthewvick4930 3 года назад
@@JeanMinutile it sounds like we started off pretty similar. I had an old craftsman no 5 and an old Stanley block plane. I’m glad to hear your plane was ready out of the box! I sold Stanley planes in an industrial supply house for better than 30yrs. Stanley gradually cheapened their tools to save mone to the point that they were pretty much low end hardware store items. That created a void for good quality hand planes so Lie Nielson and Veritas filled the void. Suffice to say Veritas is probably an equal to Lie Nielson and price wise it is the best price for what you get. Up here in Canada an equivalent Lie Nielson will cost you twice what the Veritas. Finish wise Veritas and Lie Nielson are definitely equals and very nice tools to use. My Veritas plans make me smile when I use them. Never had that happen with a Stanley except for maybe my 45.
@matthewvick4930
@matthewvick4930 3 года назад
That’s awesome! I agree for sure on it all. LN is a great quality tool but I find that veritas equivalents tend to be a little cheaper and have a bit more bang for your buck. If I ever get to go to Canada my one wish is to go to a store where I can see all of the tools! The veritas tools that I do own are my favorite as well!

@@huejanus5505 that block plane is definitely on my list for sure. When I was in school for this stuff my professor had one and had the additional wood handles that screw into it and it was amazing! The veritas is far superior and worth every bit more. You failed to mention with the veritas the cap iron being made a certain shape to aid with shooting also the grub screws at the side of the iron to keep consistent location. Never mind the different/better mechanism for opening the throat!?!? A tool review is all well and good but if you are going to compare, have the other tools to hand.

First off the veritas jack rabbit is my dream plane to one day own!😍😍😍 please let me know what you think of it. Also yes the play in the adjuster is pretty annoying but I can look past it because of the price point but I hate the aluminum cap. I think that was pretty stupid. As far as the chisels they hold up really well so far. They took a while to get flat but for $115 for the 8 piece I fully expected that. I do wish they did A2 steel like everything else but it is what it is. I think if you are on a budget they are worth it. I love the socket style so you can swap the handles. I have the new 60-1/2 sweetheart block plane. It’s not junk... but A. It’s a fucking boat anchor. It’s so heavy it’s absurd. B. The threads in the aluminum cap are stripping, as you feared might happen, because you have to set the hold down screw at the very end of its trav3l to fit. C. The hold down screw doesn’t have a screwdriver slot in it wtf. D. The mouth adjustment wouldn’t open all the way, I had to file the adjuster slot to get it to open all the way. E. The brass blade advance knob unscrewed from its shaft when I back the blade up. F. The adjustable mouth fore sole isn’t flat with the rest of the sole. G. Aluminum parts? Really Stanley? Fuck that. I use this plane almost daily, had it for about two years, it does the job, the blade is awesome, I’m a real, on the job finish Carpenter, so I now if I drop it off a scaffold and crack it, I can just buy another. I’ll tell ya what though, for a good twenty years I used an ACTUAL Stanley 60-1/2 sweetheart, (with an aftermarket Hock blade),and that plane was magic in my hand. I only switched cause I dropped it a couple times, and was afraid I’d crack it Swear I’m going to just buy a couple old ones and bring them along to work as well.

Hah!! I got lucky! "made in Mexico" :p Thanks for explaining the whole thing so well - I was always using electric planers, but 2 of my people have allergies against Mahogany dust, so I bought this... Do you think I can get away with just this plane alone for things like doors, windows, tables? Or do I really need a short one too, with some sort of steeper ankle?
@matthewvick4930
@matthewvick4930 3 года назад
That’s an excellent question! I would give it a shot and as you use it think “would a smaller one work better?” You might find you can do everything with the one. It’s referred to as a “low angle jack plane” because it is so versatile it is the jack of all trades. As far as the blade angle is concerned the blade bevel is up so it dictates the angle of cut so the awesome thing about low angle planes is that if you find you need a higher angle, all you need is a higher degree grind on the blade. I have a 50 degree blade that works beautifully on figured woods but for everything else the standard blade is perfect. I hope this answers your questions and congrats on the new plane!

If stanley was "back in the game" that would be an enormous anomaly. They are owned by black and decker. Their products are all made of cheap plastic and are unreliable junk. Why would one expect their tools, no matter how shiny, to be any different? If they are quality tools, that would be extremely strange, perhaps as a result of outsourcing to someone who actually cares about what they are selling and the legacy. As of now, we are living in a world where the bootleg is better quality than the "original." I highly doubt Stanley has access to their old factories and methods. It's a silly thing to say that "Made in Mexico" somehow denotes quality. Since when?
