Like some Tool songs, they have to grow on you, for me I struggled to understand why people were such big fans of this track. Then i finally heard the lyrics and understood. Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold. Let go.
@@ginofactap why be an asshat? You seem to clutch your crown of negativity like a cornerstone. I think the music and composition on this song is not Tool’s best work. It lacks the slow build and the big payoff that so many of their masterpieces have. Most of their songs stand alone without lyrics, this one quite frankly, does not.
Yes. It takes a minute to truly appreciate TOOL. It's not a gut feeling type of thing; it's more intellectual than that, I think. Then again, once you've reckoned the profundity, TOOL folds back in on itself to become the only thing worth listening to but... To your own detriment. The rest of pop music seems disposable in comparison. Until you realize that you, yourself, are an asshole unworthy of any kind of enlightenment. That's when you can put TOOL into context and live your shitty life til the bitter end
Finally...the recognition of the lyrics, MJK is the greatest lyricist of our generation, that song is almost 25 years old and still packs that impact and power , the drumming is off the charts, Tool is one of the greatest american bands of all time....glad you found them sir!!
“Descending”. It’s a long one, but so, so, so worth the ride. One of their greatest songs, in my opinion, for matching soundscape to message. Wonderful.
@@ErolReacts Front to back, this album is better than any book I've ever read, better than any film I've ever watched. Lateralus is TOOL'S magnum opus, an absolute gem!
It takes about 25 years for Saturn to return to the same point in the sky when someone is born. Which is known as Saturn returns, people tend to fully grow up at 25 and have a midlife crisis at 50. Check out Lateralus next.
@@badmotorfinger007 Yep, it can be 27 to 29 years, it's not always consistent. And I've found the late 20's/early 30's the defining age range for truly growing up and taking on all the responsibilities of being an adult. Obviously, some get it sooner and some never do, just my experience and what I've observed in others. This song is such a masterpiece, musically and lyrically.
A little context for this song. Tools first album, Undertow has a theme of abuse and addiction. Their second album, Aenima, is basically about dealing with the world, past trauma and whatnot and not liking it at all. That album ends with the track Third Eye that is some sort of an awakening. Lateralus, their this album, opens with this song about letting go of your grudges. It leads into the rest of the album that is overall coming to terms and finding peace. It’s a concept trio of albums that is very much so worth a listen the entire way through. That’s my thoughts on it anyway. Your reactions are great by the way🤙
Yes! Couldn’t have said it better myself. Having listened to Tool’s work chronologically Ive always felt people who discover Tool’s later songs first will always miss out a bit on some of the layers in them because of the work that took to get there and how the journey shapes the achievement. The songs are so incredible in themselves that they’re always worth being listened to but imo they’ll be even better after knowing the struggle and angst that had to be overcome to get there.
I'm glad you're digging tool. It's always fun seeing someone hear them for the first time. Assuming you continue your tool journey, i would suggest you listen to the following songs together as they had to be broken up into separate tracks for one reason or another, but are meant to be single songs: Parabol + Parabola Intension + Right in two Wings for marie + 10,000 days Lipan conjuring + lost keys + rosetta stoned Disposition + reflection + triad Also, i put them in, in my opinion, the most "normal" and least involved order. Each one gets longer and more esoteric, and goes further down the tool rabbit hole.
Their song LATERALUS is based on the Fibo sequence, but one of my all time favorites is PUSHIT live from the SALIVAL album. SPIRAL OUT, here for the journey
Great video as usual. People are divided into 2 categories from this point of view: those who understand TOOLs and those who don't understand them. It's a natural thing in my personal experience. I can tell you that if you like one song, you'll like them all. As you move forward you will realize that the real peculiarity of TOOL is that their discography is immaculate! There are no bad or even mediocre songs. If you like them, you'll like everything!
Completly and utterly disagree. I love lots of Tool songs, and there are also lots that I just find a noise. It's not that I don't understand them as you say, it's just that they are a noise. You're telling us what we should be feeling based on your own feelings. There are lots of people who feel the same as I do. The Grudge is one of the songs I slip every time, and yes I've tried to listen to it. And to say there are no bad or mediocre songs is also wrong, and just your opinion. There are some very bad and mediocre songs.
@@Markhypnosis1 I hear and understand your opinion, I'm in the camp that loves this song but I'm a percussionist and don't give a rats ass about lyrics I'm all about the musical journey in songs. I do question why you are watching this video if you don't like the song and "slip(?) it every time" as you say and yet here you are 🤔🧐
I’m not sure who you are with respect to music, but it seems like you “get it” when it comes to TOOL. I’ve heard you pick up on some passages that I’ve always loved that no other reactor has ever mentioned. BRAVO on this and your other TOOL reactions. Welcome to the TOOL ARMY !!!
There's this really specific beat/syncopated rhythm in 5 that runs on and off through this song (all instruments come back to it at one time or another, including the vocals "Wear. The grudge. Like. A crown." etc) - i feel that once you internalise that rhythm and can sing/tap it on the desk, the whole song opens up and becomes instantly so, so, so addictive.
The thing about this band, (my favorite if I had to choose just one), is that many of their songs took a minute to grow on me. And even once it’s established itself in the rotation it goes in phases. I can put a song down for years but with these guys and all of the greats they always reemerge and remind me why I originally got that tingle from it. They don’t get played out. Just an opinion ✌️
Took me a LONG time to get into The Grudge. I wouldn’t suggest this song to a new listener. I still think Aenima is their best album and still probably my favorite album of all time.
A face, a smile, where you can see that the person has understood the moment of the song is so much more enjoyable than a constant "OMG thats so sick." If I had to pick a single favorite song, it would probably be this one. An important song for my teenage self. Well, it probably is the best song ever made ;)
Wooo!! One of my all-time favorite songs!! Your reactions are great, since you obviously know music well, and you don't constantly interrupt the song to wax poetic. Keep 'em coming!!
Bingo on the meaning. Thats exactly what the message is. Holding a grudge can essentially control you. You can either let it consume you or let it go and regain control. You will find Tool has a lot of songs with lyrics about self reflection
One of my favorites is Jambi, so gotta throw it into the hat.. Glad that you’re enjoying the journey into Tool and can’t wait for the next react, whatever song you choose. Spiral out! 🌀
Awesome! As others have said, I think the Grudge is a bit harder for most folks to get into but as a musician I think you have an advantage there. These more difficult to get into songs (like Jambi) tend to grow on people after multiple listens and eventually become favourites. Thanks, it’s fun to see folks with musical knowledge hear these songs for the first time.
I will suggest parabol/parabola to go next. Lyrically and instrumentally it is an amazing song. And the message on it is the cherry on the top " We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion."
It's so fun to watch you discover Tool! I think you'll like the 93 live performance of Sober, Right in Two, Invincible, and don't miss Eulogy. Oh and Lateralus for sure too 😊. I mean, they're alllll good.
I can see you’re all about the measures , that being said I can see you’re understanding that Danny Carrey is an insane percussionist probably the best walking the planet today
I think you're ready for Pneuma the live drum cam version by Vic furth. Don't worry, it's like one of the only live videos that actually has really good sound quality and they play it pretty much exactly like the album. The Tool army will agree It's a good video to react to.
You must now listen to an older, less angst-driven Tool. Just make “Invincible” your next listen. YOU WILL BE CAPTIVATED. One of the great endings of any Tool song!! P.S. Danny Carey said The Grudge is one of the most difficult songs to drum, for obvious reasons. That ending!!!
If you aren’t planning your cover-to-cover their discography then I’m asking you to check out ‘The Patient’. I think Danny Carey is Jazz Drum flexing in that one. It’s great.
Haha, your smile when maynard started his long scream 😂❤ If you are into songs with long screams you could try to react to Linkin park - given up 😊 that scream gives me goosebumps too
I've always seen the lyrics regarding Saturn coming back around as a reference to the passage of time. It takes about 30 years for Saturn to orbit the Sun so suggesting the holding of a grudge (or not) from youth to adulthood, that has seen Saturn come around, leave and come back again... just my interpretation. You're doing great on these and I'm sure I'm not the only one that appreciates your efforts in sharing these experiences of our past. 🤟
Fairly new sub…since you began Tool. But I have a question: As a new channel, what was your intention when you started? Was it to discover artists that you’d never experienced? Was there a particular genre, like metal or prog metal that you were most interested in? I’m curious because , during the pandemic, I did a deep dive into to music unfamiliar to me and discovered incredible bands and artists, including Tool. Porcupine Tree, The Pineapple Thief, Alterbridge, IQ, Van Fleet and on and on. I know you’re on a Tool journey right now, but where do you see yourself going from here?
@@ErolReacts you’re welcome. Nightwish, Dream Theater, The Warning…. 😏. How about grunge? Or did you listen to that at the time? I didn’t, so that was also a new discovery for me. Great bands. Have you heard any Ren? Incredible new artist. I’ll stop now. 😁
My personal fave Tool album; title track deserves a listen for sure! Let me throw out a few tracks... The Mars Volta: "Inertiatic ESP", "Drunkship of Lantern", "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt", "Cygnus..Vismund Cygnus". Rabid fan base, don't let them drive you unwilling down the rabbithole. "Temecula Sunrise" by Dirty Projectors; Dave Longstreth is a unique talent as musician/songwriter/guitarist/[producer "Fake Empire", "Bloodbuzz Ohio", "I Should Live in Salt" by The National; maybe not the best for a video, but great band, music, songs(albums Boxer, High Violet, and Trouble Will Find Me are best). "Southern Point" by Grizzly Bear; good intro to Daniel Rossen, another unique talent.
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the Saturn ascends is a reference to Saturn making a complete orbit every 200 years or something like that. And I guess it signifies a new beginning. Other people. Correct me if I'm wrong here
Do a side by side comparison of Radiohead Day dreaming vs frog leap studios/leo moracchioli's cover of radiohead's daydreaming.. i prefer the FLS cover, what do you make of it? Would be a cool video to do
@@ErolReacts There is a live version that is heavily edited and mixed with the studio version which kicks imo even harder than the studio version. Some amazing visuals too of the band playing and really intensifies part of the song. The name of the video is: Tool - Jambi - The Non-existent DVD (2013) Jambi is one of their best songs in my book.
