Tool lyrics exist on multiple levels. Even the name Tool is meant to be interpreted many ways. Like you're a tool. Or that this music is a tool. I've found that I've found different meanings to their lyrics as I've aged. Which is wild. Maynard always writes that way, double entendres and such. This song, yea about pot, but also hypocrites (pots) who call the kettle black in regards to politicians and others who put their views/laws on others while doing what they want. The genius of Tool's music is the depth of everything, from the instruments to the lyrics. It's all intended to take you on a journey and get you thinking more about life.

As with all tool songs it's open to interpretation, but the theme of this album is about Maynard's mother's battle with cancer(?) and her death. This song contextualized with Wings for Marie gives me the sense it's about others in her congregation judging her for something, when the Bible teaches us not to judge.
@boddaboom77
@boddaboom77 3 месяца назад
It's about a judge in California who was infamous for locking people up over weed. It came to light later,the judge was either a coke head or got caught with coke. Can't remember. Same judge locked up one of Maynard's friends over a couple plants way back in the day.

Bro, listen to the lyrics. The song is about hypocrisy. However, it is said to originate from an incident where someone traveling to Maynard's place in Arizona was stopped and arrested for marijuana possession by a sheriff who would later be busted for meth and solicitation of prostitution. Pot calling the kettle black, kangaroo courts, throwing stones in glass houses, muddying the waters, house of cards, lemon juice in the eye to fake tears (weeping cozened shades of indigo), and my favorite line: Liar, lawyer, mirror...what's the difference?

Surprised you started with this one. Perfect for rock but for a classical listener they have several that are right in that wheel house. Either way, keep going ✌️

I would personally like to see a reaction to the song Lateralus by Tool. I think yall would really get a kick out of it!

Great Measures each Tool song is a tool for a different area of life. Many overlap, as life is that way. The discography is like a huge tool box full of every tool you need for working on life/self. Sweat is 1st on the 1st official album, Opiate, because without Sweat, tools are worthless. Definite must hear. Sweat. DO WORK!!!

It would be cool for y'all to get into their song structure too. I think this track moves from 4/4 to 6/4 quite seamlessly, which is not really noticeable unless you're listening for it

i loved the reaction, and your genuine honesty. it seemed you got a lot out of your first listen. i recommend lateralus or pneuma. if you listen to pneuma there’s an amazing live drum cam video on yt. first time here but i hope to see more tool on the channel!

Maynard is a troll, he knows exactly how people will take his lyrics at face value and only if they actually pay attention will they get it. This has NOTHING to do with Pot/Marijuana. lol
@huntreboy
@huntreboy Год назад
In the comments of their video one person explain that the song is about a friend of the band who got busted for possession of marijuana. The judge threw the book at him and later got caught in a hotel room with hookers and a bunch of coke. So he is essentially the pot calling the kettle black. I have no idea if this is true but it makes sense based on the song lyrics.

I know it sounds like blowing your wad early, but y'all should do 7empest next just so he truly sees what they're capable of. 21/8 with multiple simultaneous subdivisions is ingenious.

Yup yup, the song is about being hypocritical. "Soap box house of cards and glass. Oh, don't go tossin' your stones around.", "Foot in mouth and head up arsehole, what you talkin' 'bout?", "Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent.", "Lier, lawyer. Mirror, show me what's the difference." I don't think it's disparaging any particular side, though. Just pointing out the many facets of hypocrisy.

Ive been watching you're reactions avidly , have you considered a bit of Rammstein , The lyrics are often full of meaning and poetry , special favorites of mine are Ohne dich ( without you )and Deutschland ( lets test your history of the German nation! ) As a Brit here in Germany I found them both quite interesting.
