This song is about society's hypocritical view of the drug culture. We're so quick to judge/condemn drug users (pot etc) but we have to have our caffeine, nicotene, sugar, etc... all of it's addictive. As with all Tool songs, there's tons of double entendre and in this one, there's lots of colloquialism, too. Pot calling the kettle black. Kangaroo courts...

Tool songs are usually pretty deep, most times it takes me a couple listens to fully respect the meaning of the lyrics and the instrumentation as well. suggest trying lyric videos for *right in two* or *46&2* or *Lateralus* by Tool. If you're not into that kind of music you may not feel them, but when you take everything in that they offer it's a unique experience compared to any other bands. All depends on what you can feel. 🤘🤯🤘

Nice and honest reaction. I would dig a little deeper into this song and just Tool in general. There’s a lot of meat left on this bone you guys missed. These guys are brilliant and you’ll see that once you get your ears adjusted to their music.

Tool songs usually have multiple meanings behind their lyrics and are also about self reflection to better ourselves and how we treat one another. This song in particular I feel talks about how we judge one another. "black kettle", "eye holes deep in muddy waters". He also mentions Kangaroo courts where you try someone without substantiated evidence and assuming they are already guilty.

"kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent"-- This is in reference to a kangaroo court, which is a trial that isn't conducted in a lawful manner. It's about prejudice and making up your mind about someone without bothering to have all the evidence. It's another thing that hypocrites tend to do.

So this song is all about hypocrisy in our system. I saw that you guys didn't really get the point when the video was over but it's actually pretty simple. Maynard (the singer) was incarcerated for possession of the good herb, and he was treated like a death row inmate, receiving the maximum penalty for having less than a gram on him, and he dealt with months of jury duty & other bullshit, and this song is just an intricate and very intellectual reaction to the Arizona legal system; a very coy way of saying fuck you without using profanity or incriminating lyrics. Also, there are references to the concept of a "Kangaroo Court", a jesus-like situation in which the verdict is decided regardless of the jury's decision, "Guilty hung with the innocent".

It’s about that MF’er who’s always talking about what’s wrong with your life, while they’re “eyeballs deep” in their own sh:t. “The weeping shades of indigo” part is just a fancy way of saying the person (or persons) the song is about is crying now, but those tears are in vain because they’re only crying because they got called out. Think of someone in your life who puts you down only to make themselves feel better, but who never sees their own flaws. I think it was inspired by their lawyer, but it could be your parents, an ex, or maybe even a congresswoman at a musical.

Talking about hypocrisy. The reference to the black kettle (the pot calling the kettle black). Throwing stones from your glass house. Pretty deep. Saying Don't point you're finger at me when you're up to your eyeballs in mud. Take a look in the mirror. Lemon juice in their eyes makes them red and teary, fake crying to put on a show. Kangaroo court refers to going into court and putting on a show but having nothing to say, just trying to get the court of public opinion on their side basically.

Let’s put it this way, the song is calling out someone that would condemn another for doing something normal like say someone says that “rap doesn’t take skill, it’s just a bunch of words said fast by wanna be thugs and the music sucks if you can even call that crap music.” Yet you then catch them listening to Rage Against The Machine Bulls On Parade where the vocalist is literal rapping rapping and the only real difference is the instruments used to make the instrumental part of the song. They act like they are the almighty authority on something but they even partake in doing something the same thing they put someone else down for doing because of the version the other person likes isn’t what they like. From what I heard this song is a diss track towards Led Zeplin for calling out other bands about stealing shit. According to reddit detectives (so take with a grain of salt) they were sued by the artist Muddy Waters back in the day, and the Lemon Juice is in reference to a song they stole from and also got sued for. A lot of the other shit was supposedly also referencing shit they stole, so he's calling them out for being hypocrites.

When this song came out,, we were roughly 3 years into the Iraq war, I believe this is going after President Bush over the pretext to going to War in Iraq.
