Tool Tuesday Ep.13: Abom's First Tool Chest 

I swear to God that you could do an ABOM79 Tool Talk Channel, not just a series, with Abby, posting a video every single day! Within 6 months, I'd bet the subscribership would surpass if not double your current channel. The bond between you two and your interactions, combined with Abby's thirst for history and knowledge, make for engrossing content and fabulous heart-warming entertainment. MORE OF THIS PLEASE!!!!

17:30 Abby is so right. In 2017 I brought to the class I taught an IBM hard disk (1965), an IBM tape reel (1969), an 8" floppy disk, a 5" floppy disk, a 3.5" floppy disk, a ZIP disk, and a DVD. I also brought a book printed in London in English in 1722. The only one of these data storage devices that could be read in our computer-lab was the 300 year old book. The computer-lab contained 32 desktop machines built in 2014 and not one of them was fitted with the necessary hardware to read any of those computer data-storage devises even though the oldest one was only 50 years old. But all 48 of my students could read the 300-year-old book.

OH YES Abby keep doing this I don't know what it is videos...I don't know all of Adam's tool are but I know a lot of them...I enjoy watching you learn about the tool and Adam talking the history.

I love hearing the stories behind the tools! It brings them to life. Having Abby a part of this just makes it better. Her enthusiasm and her wanting to learn is just so great to see. The queen city grinder history and what is different about it versus the baldor buffer.

This is turning into a great series. A real world exploration of the tools of the trade presented in the perfect fashion for conversation without getting too technical for the layperson to stay interested in. Might I suggest doing these by topic like Abby just suggested/ Cutters, Inserts, welding, measuring ect. A side by side comparasion like what it coming up on thread repair would be perfect.

You two are really good together and good for each other. Congrats. Nothing like finding your match.

The quality of the hand writing on that old note is amazing. I guess that is from an era when hand writing was taught in school to be done correctly. I have to do some research but I think my dad was in that union.

It seems like all of the machine shops that make videos don't have work to make content so they are doing what ever, at least these videos are related content and very interesting. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK I ENJOY AND LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING BOTH OF YOU WEEKLY.

That Lufkin radius gage patent number 1,797,279 was issued in 1931. The patent is actually for the leather holder. So that's the oldest it could be.

I think a cool addition to this series could be making a sample piece with some of the tools Abby picks. For example drilling and broaching a hole with Abby so her and everyone can see it in use.

Let Abby know that my wife enjoys watching these. She's learning a lot about what I do in my garage shop...

That’s a machinist union book. That’s the reason why a union membership card is called a union book. Mine is from UA local 404.

The Jebco cabinet is an old ibm card cabinet. Each drawer holds 3000 cards and is removable so you could take the cards to another machine, such as a card sorter. Cabinets were very well made…that many cards was heavy.

I absolutely LOVE these episodes with Abby! It is such a delight to see her interest in your shop, your tools, and your craft. You got yourself a keeper there! What a blessing.

I was a union member of the IAM which became the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers. You have IAM decals from yesteryear.

I love going through old tool chests. So many back stories in them. Nice to keep people alive and tell their history. Thread files have saved my bacon so many times on items irreplaceable or when disassembly isn’t practical.

I love these videos with Abby. It's really neat to see some of your tool collection. The history behind the tool boxes, the tools, etc. You could fill an exhibit at a museum!

The thread file demo was cool, not something I've seen before. i feel like most people now would have just grabbed appropriate sized die and chased the thread with that.

Again, that was fun to watch. Like in that box, there are things that bring back old memories you haven't thought about for a long time. Looking forward to seeing more.

Adam and Abby my grandpa was a teacher in a machine shop and he worked on the planes in world war 2. It just brings back memories of him when Abby picks and Adam tells the story about his dad. Adam if possible what are the most memorable stories you had with them working in the shop

Love this series, the tools are very cool, but the stories behind some of these really connect to the history of the craft. A thread repair/frozen fastener episode would be awesome!

Very interesting video; a mix of history, heritage and how to use tools. Keep them coming. If I could suggest a tutorial, I would appreciate grinding HSS for lathe and metal shaper.

You've certainly gone a long way from grinding the propshaft endmills to the heat shrink tool holders you're using nowadays.

I love knowing about the who, what, and when about the tools. Remember all this will be searchable for eternity. It's great to see you going thru older tools and giving the sort of patina of these things first hand. But your better half is so much better at the what the hell is this thing. Keep doing what you do....

Good job Abby. I like this format, please continue. I won’t make any recommendations because I like what you come up with. Even though I might know what it is you hold up, Adam is able to add nuance to the explanation. I get a deeper understanding. Like Adam said Push Broach, basically the only one I’m familiar with. Because he said that I now am convinced there is a thing called a Pull Broach, probably with a different lead end that can be firmly grasped/chucked. Thank you for your time.
