He is saying we as a society are addicted to watching violence and murder and trauma we see on the news or out on the street just as long as it isn’t happening to us. He is a master at exposing the darker sides of human nature on one hand then gives us songs about raising our consciousness and being spiritually enlightened to counterbalance our shadow selves with our better angels.
The background vocals are a newscaster talking about articles relating to the first verse of lyrics. It's the same voice actor for the later track Lost Keys
I was born in 1971 & have been a music lover for as long as I can remember ….the 90’s were a great time to be in your 20’s 🤤I love watching people “get” the music I’ve loved for many, many years 🖤
This song is about being emotionally disconnected and the crime of complacency. If you saw a child being abused, or a person being murdered right next to you we would most likely act. That is always going on somewhere in the world but because we learn about it through the tv, through media, a disconnected source from reality, we can disconnect from the true trauma and live vicariously through that trauma and get enjoyment from it like vampires feeding off the tragedy. We find entertainment in it because of our detachment from the reality of the real pain. The detachment of mainstream and social media is the illusion of being connected while being shown the true horrors of the world yet feeling disconnected from their reality and thus accepting them through our complacency by our lack of action regardless of it happening to us or our neighbor. We must stand up regardless of the location, not be complacent and not live vicariously through the suffering of others. This is not a tv show, this is real life!
Whooooooo! Danny keeps it going right into Jambi. Don't remember if you heard that one. Love to hear your reaction as Maynard goes introspective on that one. Great take on this one too. Enjoying your journey. ✌🏼🤘🏼
This song is incredible, not just musically but lyrically as well , it’s so intelligent it’s probably one of my favourite songs Tool after Schism of coarse
If you want something Tool-adjascent to check out, give a listen to the song Passenger by Deftones. Maynard sings on the chorus. Also, the song Know Your Enemy by Rage Against the Machine, which also has Maynard. Both are excellent songs 🤘
Check out Maynard’s other work with A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. If you get to Orestes at Red Rocks, or The Remedy I’ll know you’re a Soldier in the TOOLARMY.
