Maynard is talking to his record company. They wanted tool to make a more radio friendly song. They deliberately put the slow long section in so it wouldn’t be radio friendly. The ticks and leeches are the record company

My favorite Danny track. But I have to say shhhh...you told a secret. Tool has put out music for decades. Each album reflects the evolution of human. Thier change. And ours. 4 geniuses telling a long story.

Thank you man! This track is the only 1 I prayed they would play when I seen them live last October, I'm afraid they will never play this live again because it's so vocally demanding for Grandpa Maynard

They almost never play this song live, but it has nothing to do with Maynards vocals. This song was basically a middle finger to the to the record label and was done very off the cuff. Lateralus was submitted as completed, and the label came back and asked why there was no real heavy stuff on it. They wrote this quickly and sent it back. They dont have any attachment to it other than that. Thankfully, I got to see it played live in 2001 as Mike Patton (Tomahawk) requested it on their last night on that tour

I once heard they played this live in California and Maynard blew out his voice Btw I saw them in msg on this tour, it was Mike Patton in a group called Fantomas. When Mike came out he announced a lineup change and the crowd booed. Then he announced that Tony Iommi was on guitar and Les Claypool was on bass. I swear the arena SHOOK from the cheers! Epic show

I recommend the track "H." For your next listen. Its one that will teach you things about the band, specifically maynard. More audible and deep lyrics for you too digest, and definitely underrated. Few ppl have reactions too it, however folks like you who do fantastic breakdowns of the lyrics have very apreciated interpretations.

Or more. Srsly. Look at the dates of the LPs. It also shines light on how to interpret the lyrics of a 20+-year-old vs 50+. Id show up for the full anima review. That 2nd LP really put them on the map. Lateralus made them GOATs. But 10,000 Days is their best album, imo
