I have looked at a few dump trailers and what I have found is that they are more friendly to a building contractor opposed to someone that is dumping and hauling materials like rock and dirt all day. I would rather have a large single axle dump truck personally but this is a great video, very informational. Thank you

Well my dump trailer has had a hard life and served me well, its fully galvanised and on a fairly recent job a pal of mine offered to help by using his brand new tipper truck. I found that if i loaded him first and followed him ALL i could smell was a burning clutch and little movement, wear-as if i went first with my tipping trailer with THREE times as much on it he couldn’t keep up and was left FAR behind on steep hills.

i ordered a Texas pride dump trailer and i love it, i saved a ton of money buying direct from the maker. i just ordered a dove flatbed with bobcat ramps with 10k package for 2995 from hull trailers out of iowa...buy direct if you want to save! you just have to drive to go get it!

PJ Trailers powder coat will pop off the first moment any road salt touches it. Also, every one of my PJ Trailer's required the wiring to be repaired/installed correctly before being put into service. They trailer nice, but PJ trailers suck for those of us in the rust belt and they suffer quality issues.
@geraldmcclintock2567

Agree. The southern made trailers rust away to nothing in the north. A cheap whisper thin powder coat works in the desert not in adverse conditions

I have a 2016 pj dump in missouri and yes the powder coat on it sucked. That being said apparently they have changed their paint prep process of recent but if i do get another it will probably be from load trail since there is now a dealer 1/4 the distance of the pj dealer.

They powder coat prime now...my old one, just like you say, new one is holding up much better...the rocks can chip off the black, but you can see the primer coat is still there

I bought a 22' PJ Deckover Gooseneck with a "neck deck" to haul my equipment. Or actually, I should say that I I needed something to haul ALL my equipment. It ended up costing over $20k when the base model was only $7k. I use less extravagant trailers to haul my basic equipment set, which is a Grand L series Kubota with a bucket and a specialized gravel surface tool on the back. It ended up being almost 6,000 pounds but the thing I wanted to mention was some of the options... 1) Neck Deck: I can put the bucket of a tractor, TLB or excavator on the deck, giving me more options for placing the weight and still having a 22' deck. 2) Hydraulic Landing Gear: Lets be real... this one is self explanatory. I also got a wireless remote so I can back up my truck and drop the downtube on the ball without even getting out of the truck. 3) 12,000lb winch, also with wireless remote, so I can self-recover broken equipment. 4) Scissor-Jack upgrade for the deck, also with wireless remote, so that I can raise or lower the bed from the seat of whatever I am hauling. There were a bunch of miscellaneous upgrades, including blackwood deck and pockets for movable tie-down rings, but the thing that I really love is my axles upgrade... 5) Instead of the stock 7,000 pound drum brake axles I went with 8,000 pound oil-bath, disc-brake Dexters with the heavy E-rate tires. I have the trailer rated for 14,500 pounds GVWR but it will REALLY carry 18,000 pounds. Now here's the important part... If I tow with an ordinary single-axle one ton pickup and offload 4,000 pounds onto the rear axles of the truck via the gooseneck, I am only carrying 14,000 pounds on the trailer and 11,000 on the truck, putting me at 25,000 pounds CGVW. Or to put it differently, I am UNDER 26,000 pounds while carrying 12,000 pounds of equipment. Even better, the DOT enforcement people are looking for DUAL tandem trailers, which they know are at least 10 Ton capable. SINGLE tandem axles are effectively invisible.

One thing I should add... PJ is great at getting the overall trailer right, but they can be hit or miss on small details. Like a locking mechanism for the winch box and the lower tool box in the trailer neck that aren't properly fitted and doesn't work well. Little stuff like that. Basically, just check things over very carefully before taking delivery.

I have a very similar PJ trailer except it's not the low pro, it's the XL Dump. I speced mine out too. I got the 8k pound oil bath axles with disc brakes. It's also got the 12" beams on centers too. I use it for mulch, landscape debris, dirt, and rock. I've even used it to help a couple of friends move. I've had mine for 3 years now and it's held up really well and I haven't had a single problem. The most important thing with dump trailers is the hydraulics and you really want to make sure you get one that has a scissor lift. The ones that have two long lift rams are junk. The cylinders are usually no more than 1 1/2" and I've seen two people bend theirs. You'll pay a little more up front for a PJ or any other well built trailer up front but you'll spend less fixing it in the long run.

Oh and the most important thing, is grease that bad boy! It's a lot easier to wipe excess grease off then deal with rusted hinges. The good people at PJ put a grease fitting on almost every point that moves.

Good Video. I purchased a SureTrac; 7'x14' scissor. PJ offers a nice trailer but when compared to others the 2x12 extension top rail to add that extra heigth (and protect the sides from an inexperienced operator) along with the silicone they applied to all the gaps not welded to prevent any water entry before they powder coat, it was a no brainer.

I like this trailer, the add ons like the dual battery system ( I've taken two days on a 1 day job bc my dump trailer battery (1 battery system) wouldn't stay charged... So we took too long.. This particular job was a good money maker until the battery failed. Yes, I maintain my equipment to the best of my abilities. In short, I think I'm gonna step it up and just order a new trailer. Also, this is to everyone that fears getting your equipment stolen. One of my most important and most used trailers (18' car hauler with custom heavy duty axles and new heavier tires and many other customs weld ons that took my time and materials to do) was stolen while I took one of my helpers back home (he is saving to fix his truck) and I come right back and it's gone out of my driveway.... Pissses me off to no end, but HAD I TOOK THE EXTRA 10 minutes to weld on my serial numbers in noticeable spots, and write my name with a welding rod in a secret spot) and paint it bright green with silver safety tape, I may still have it. Always, always, always put that heavy duty tung lock on your trailers even if your going to be gone a half hour.... My trailer was worth about 5,000$. Now I have to buy another one and yes it will be marked in many spots... and custom painted to where it's nearly impossible for a quick paint over to hide its identity... I live in Nashville TN (had a good business in Little Rock, AR for many years before moving here. It I watch your videos every night. You e taught me a good bit Stanley! Thanks for your time and effort! You give the right advice on all your videos. Thanks from all the guys that want to do it right and do good returning business.

I love my PJ dump. One point I'd like to argue with the video is, that my trailer will go down when the battery is dead. I don't have the "gravity down" option. Although it would be nice, I've never had a situation where I ran the battery down too far to where the trailer wouldn't power down. Basically, the weight of the trailer "assists" the battery on bringing it back down. Also, mine only has one battery. Other than that, great video guys.

Recessed lights are a great idea for a trailers. So many trailer companies have there lights out in the open where you can smash them when backing up. This dump trailer looks great though you will need at least a 3/4 ton HD truck to pull it with load.

I have owned several dump trailers over the years. After finding out the "hard way", I switched them all over to pintle hitches. Ball couplers wear out slowly and will eventually come off when dumping. When the load shifts behind the trailer axles the toungue is lifted. I took out a tailgate when this occured...

I had purchased a 7 ton PJ low pro gooseneck dump trailer in 2013. By the time 2014 hit, it was almost completely rotten. It was not meant for use in any of the northern states and especially not for use in Canada like where I used mine. In my opinion, you shouldnt have to oil spray a brand new trailer the moment you spend close to 11k on it. It was ridiculous. The worst part is that the dealership I bought the trailer from and PJ themselves refused to do anything about it. Lucky for me I traded it for a Bri-Mar and have been happy so far. I've never been so upset with the customer service of a company before PJ.

I personally have put off the concept of buying a dump trailer because my situations generally require pulling large grounds & landscape equipment to a jobsite and then also bringing supplies to and from the jobsite also. My solution rather than making 2 trips was to purchase a actual dump truck. I can load up my materials on the dump truck, load up the large equipment on one of my 5 different trailers Depending which trailer I need, I can load up the small hand tools usually on either the dump truck or trailer and off to the jobsite I go. With this method I rarely have had to deal with multiple trips and at the end of the day & when I'm done I can pack up and go as generally all the jobsite supplies are on the dump truck, I do not have to worry about running back to pick up a second trailer or equipment that was left behind. Only recently have i given very little thought to the concept of a dump trailer and its only purpose would be to bring along to load yard waste debris on the dump trailer (similar to having a dumpster onsite) if the dump truck was filled with product for the installation project.

I have 7 dump trailers and pj are by far the best. I have pj, big Tex and load trail. I ended up going with a different model pj trailer because that one is too low and at the landfill or uneven terrain you hit the ground before the trailer get to full lift.

All the advice on the trailer is great but anyone purchasing one should look at the towing capacity of their truck or tractor and match it to the max loaded weight of the trailer. Having a 12000 pound load on your trailer and attempting to move it with a truck or tractor which has only a 10000 capacity can be dangerous. Most standard pickups only have a 8000 to 10000 pounds. This should factor into your trailer selection.

Question; due to the particular balance, how it carries load, and design dynamics of a trailer, trailers don't all tow the same or have the same road manners. -How is this determined before purchase, with minimal time, and is it usual to not be able to test he trailer under load before purchase?

Nice lower frame! Pj has come a long way. In the right direction. They used to make garbage with paint that wouldn't make 1 winter. I would have ordered a 4 bolt hitch instead of that flimsy 2 bolt. The 2 bolts have a tendency to loosen up.

Beautiful trailer with all those options except for the powder coat. I HATE powder coat. I have 3 new trailers that don't go out in the winter and the powder coat still just flakes right off. I have this problem with everything that's powder coated. I've since sandblasted and painted them. I think the big-name manufacturers do not take the time to properly prep for powder coat. my dump trailer is a 2011 and has PPG paint and it is unbelievable how good it is holding up even with stone being dumped in, logs,hauling road salt and other heavy materials being dumped in. I wish you the best with the trailer, and hope your paint stands the test of time.
@bobclifton7346
@bobclifton7346 7 лет назад
Yep powder coat isn't what it used to be or as you said not prepared properly. My cam trailer and big Tex have the same problem. One knick is all it takes to get the powder coat peeling. PPG does make great paint!
@EchoTangoSuitcase

My PJ doesn't have that issue. Don't get me wrong, it's not a perfect trailer and I HAVE scraped the powdercoat over the last couple of years, but I just touch that up with equipment enamel.

@stevenhardy2898 7 лет назад
Same feelings about "powder coat" ....flaking on my 2006 skid loader and flaking on my 2010 Bry Mar trailer. I think the problem with powder coat is that stell flexes,expands and shrinks.....but powder coat doesn't. In both cases the primer stays on, the powder coat don't.
@smitty9120

powder coat is not designed flex like paint. thats why trailers are one of the worst things to utilize powder coat.

The drop legs to hold the trailer up when loading heavy equipment bend. the best way is to have swing down jacks like the MaxxHd dump trailers have. Three good trailer to buy are PJ, Load Trail, and MaxxHd. All made in Texas. Check weight of trailer when comparing. Lighter trailers may be best because you can haul more weight. Load Trail stamps there dump beds sides giving the trailer a low weight. 400 lbs can mean a DOT ticket or no ticket. Love my dump trailers. The day I got a dump trailer was the day the company started making more money. The fun thing about dumps trailer is the truck pulling them. Ram 6.7 with aisin tranny works really good. if you load the trailer really heavy the Ram will pulls it safely. The truck world keeps changing yearly so the new 17' Ford and the new 17' Chevy engine may do better than Ram

So that is 14,000 pound trailer ? What is maximum weight with tongue weight you can haul with that? I'm from Ontario 🇨🇦 They say 10% of tongue weight will give your trailer a max of 15,400 pound. I need more information on how much 14,000 pound trailer is capable of because I recently bought 5.5 metric ton excavator and I think the trailer is pretty much borderline what do you think Stanley? My trailer weight is 1.2 tons metric! Hope you can come to Toronto for the construction show April 6 and seventh let me know and I will get you tickets. Thank you Mighty Moe Excavating

weight of the trailer subtract the combined weight of the trailer equals its load it can haul. I think by Pj site that this trailer spec out is 4500 empty, add the 10% then its 10,900 lbs 14,000+10%=1400 TW=15,400-4500= 10,900lbs. that this could haul. you can get this with 2 8k axles.

Depending on the tow vehicle, you could easily need a class A CDL. Which would make a great video idea, " Do I need a CDL ?" Yeah, variance from state to state, but you could use Federal guidelines which represent minimum compliance. Individual states are free to modify laws as long as they are stricter.

I'm not Stan and he might say something different but there is a simple rule I personally follow: Finance anything where the money the equipment makes in a month is more than the carrying cost and preserve your liquidity. Check out Bwise Dump Trailers. Bought one and has almost all these features and even some more. Bri Mar's bigger, better brother. Once you get a hydraulic jack, you can't go back haha.

Eliminate the trickle charge batteries and install a direct connect plug in. I've been running that efficient system for years.

Sometimes you have to take a loan to get started if you don't already have the money for it.

Would it be practical to have a gas engine run the hydraulic system instead of the electric pump?
@mjberta7319
@mjberta7319 7 лет назад
Ethan Williams extra maintenance that's not needed as electric can be used everywhere only advantage to a gas pump would be it could possibly heat the fluid up for easier use in winter but might not always start and electric powered has more power output and takes up less space

Well here in the uk we DONT get the same choices you get in the 🇺🇸 but here we have trailers made by IFOR WILLIAMS and i have regularly used mine for transporting my SKIDSTEER, THREE TON DIGGERS and smaller diggers AND dumpers all at the same time. Having been to the USA I’ve always admired the choices you have there for these sorts of bits of kit and wish we had the same choices here.

Yes ball hitches NOT the best option, I’ve replaced mine with a pin and eye after loosing a loaded trailer FITTED with a ball hitch, NOT a pleasant experience

I'm looking at getting a dump trailer. Would the scissor type of lift be fine for hauling branches, fire wood, junk and the occasional topsoil, gravel? Thanks in advance!

Here in Ontario you have to up grade your drivers license for the 7000 lbs tandem axel not worth the up grade from 5200lb axels

Also like to run locking heavy gauge wire and connectors from the alternator back to charge the deep cycle battery. I’m actively dumping loads all day though when the 4900 single axle dump truck isn’t a good fit for the days jobs.

You don't need a 3/4 ton truck anymore a good 1/2 ton with a 10000 lbs tow rating works fine and cheaper to operate. For example I drive a ram ecodiesel 1/2 ton pickup and bought a 6'x12' 5 ton dump trailer that weighs 2500 lbs and the trailer is rated for 10 000 lbs. My trucks tow rating is 9600 lbs and I own a skid-steer that weighs 7000 lbs so a combined payload weight and trailer weight of 9500lbs. Why don't I just buy a bigger truck or heavier trailer? Varies depending on state but if your towing trailer and payload weight can not exceed 10000 lbs on a basic license. So you have a basic license if you buy a 3500LBS trailer rated for 7ton your max payload is 6500LBS... where as you buy a 2500LBS trailer rated at 5ton then your max payload is 7500LBS. There are some exceptions like motorhomes and camping trailers. Anyways make sure your hitch receiver is rated for your trailer's rated weight and buy real trailer tires 8 ply or higher like 10 ply. If you tow trailers a lot then get 8 ply or higher tires on your truck because standard rated tires will twist belts as they get to the end of their life.

NorthStead Landscaping - North Bay - Callander 2500 pounds seems light for a dump trailer
@Northbaylandscaping
@Northbaylandscaping 7 лет назад
I had it weighed at the scales and that also includes all my clamps and chains too. I paid $5500 and I'm on my third year with this trailer and it came with cheap tires and wiring which I replaced with better after year two cost $550. In my opinion the trailer in the video wouldn't work for me it's too heavy and too high. Hydraulic ram at the front of the dump box works better than the scissor lift in my opinion and it's easier to work on if it were to break.

Hmm, I have an 83 by 14 foot American hauler and its 3500+ dry. And I haul 10000 plus in it often with a 2012 f250 with no issues.
@Northbaylandscaping
@Northbaylandscaping 7 лет назад
You will have no issues with a commercial license. You most likely need to register your combined weight of the your truck and trailer and max payload. Your truck and trailer would cost $590 in the state of michigan to register each year based on your weight. some States may require an annual on both truck and trailer rated 5ton or higher. If you choose to ignore the laws then don't get into an accident.

Does anybody here have a solar charge panel on the battery box lid? We do and it works great for keeping the battery topped off while in the yard on standby.
@mjberta7319
@mjberta7319 7 лет назад
ball boy jones for heavy loads yes but not always better you have way more forward and backwardd movement with braking and accelerating with a pintle hitch that can cause stress failures and you cannot use a weight distribution system with that style of hitch
@OffRoad-jh1do
@OffRoad-jh1do 7 лет назад
Matt Juniper The military hitch will not come loose. I have seen many trailers come free on the highway from improper hook ups. Plus it is the only true universal hook up.

Also if you go with a 14k rated trailer and your truck has a gvwr that is 12k or greater, f450 for example, you have to have a class A cdl to tow it legally.

Those door latches will come off if you load over the box. It’s not safety also for $12.000 it’s too much A cheap ram jack. They could use a bulldog and cross members every 12 “ it’s ok but no need for all the extra weight when all the lead springs are not extra supported. Like I said too expensive I could buy the same trailer from load trail with just a few differences!!

that trailer could load more than 5 ton of sand. I doubt that ram and batteries could offload it safely, doubt the tyres would like it and doubt the towing vehicle would like towing that weight. Better off with an old tipper truck for $20k
