Keith Downie was at Eddie HOWE’s press conference this morning ahead of the trip to Liverpool on New Years Day. He also brings you an update on the club’s position with manager Eddie Howe, after 6 defeats in the last 7 games…
We are lucky to have Eddie, we also need to keep hold of him for a long time. As fans and our clubs owners we need to remember we are on a journey to growth and success on and off the pitch. This includes players, coaching staff and Eddie as our manager. Two more transfer windows and we will have a good first team and bench to support injuries and schedules. Eddie will also have gained more experience to help our growth. Heads up Toon fans, onwards and upwards ⚫️⚪️⚫️⚪️💪
Indeed but he must also adapt and follow the evidence of his eyes eg bringing Burn back immediately because he was part of last year’s settled back 5 is nostalgia at best
Got a feeling the next few weeks might challenge your view. He’s lucky to be managing our brilliant club and needs to learn fast. His loyalty to the cheerleaders will cost him
Agreed, he has done a great job with the limited squad he has both last season and this. However he does need to keep bringing new plans and tactics to the table. Although we lost last night and would have been better with Gordon in his normal position, I was glad to see Eddie trying a new formation with big Joe up front
Things I've noted about the PIF: 1) They've appointed or delegated capable, informed people to run the club day to day. The player recruitment and commercial decisions these appointees have made have been absolutely fine. 2) The PIF have not interfered. They are thousands of miles away and from a completely different culture, the people in post know this world much better than they do, which is why they appointed them. The PIF have fingers in hundreds of other pies so why would they micromanage one particular project? 3) A foreign state-backed takeover of an EPL club is not a new thing, it has happened before and everyone has been able to watch what happened, what went right and what went wrong. Things like poor appointments, continual interference, short term thinking. They have learned lessons and are applying them. They haven't got carried away with unexpectedly early cup finals and European qualification, and judge their appointments based on how they are doing against the long-term plan. It's really very encouraging.
I absolutely agree with you there, in all honesty it would probably have been better for the squad not to got CL this year as we just didn’t have the depth, don’t get me wrong we had some spectacular results but also some games we didn’t really need with such a depleted squad already. We definitely need more players of a higher quality to continue the improvement
@@stephennutkin2477 I’d still class myself as an inexperienced supporter as I’m more of an armchair supporter, but it does seem like there many out there that don’t understand CL was not part of the plan last year, just staying up was and a bonus would be top half of the table. A long term plan is just that, long term, not 18 months after takeover
A good, calm and sensible report . Thank you. Even if Eddie knew he had a £Trillion he would still play the poker face. Even if he knew X,Y& Z from our injury list could be available to play within days he would play with a poker face.
A well measured, informative and as always beautifully delivered video Keith, many thanks. Really enjoyed your videos this year, keep at it. Happy New Year to you and yours!
I was so worried for Eddie. I just felt that the way the players were playing, it just made it tough for him. In the 30 years plus that I have watched football. He is by far and away the best people person-football manager. I would love to see his vision fully realised. I believe it is possible. For it to come to fruition. He has to come out of these fixtures stronger and, I hope he can and I will scream from my arm chair all day long to see it happen for him and the mighty Toon. Stay strong!
The word 'sacked' should be nowhere near anybody's lips. For me, these owners will not make a rash decision and will continue to be as calm and considered as they have been with all of the changes and transfers they've made over the past 2 years. When the time eventually comes to move on, it will be announced ahead of the end of the season, and a transition will be made over the summer period. I refuse to believe any NUFC boss under this tenure will be 'sacked' on a random Tuesday, least of all the man who took us from bottom, to 11th, and then on to the top 4 in 18 months. People have short memories - This club isn't a circus anymore.
Thanks Keith, great video. You seem to have a different take on the chances of deals with the Saudi Pro League than other journos I’ve read/seen. Personally, I think the club would be reluctant to but I’m sure you know better than me.
Thank You Keith Also Thank You for Relaying your Opinion and that of Eddies Future I Hope he is our Future Gaffer he is absolutely the Right Man for the job any talk about Mourinho is Rubbish no way . I Feel for Eddie I genuinely feel he fallen in love with club he cares his face said it all after the defeat on Saturday. What he says to his Players is not necessarily what he tell us . We have had so much bad luck it got to change .Eddie is Absolutely our Man for Now and long term Future I want to see him win Us Something.🌑⚽️
On the matter of the FFP, I think the club needs to come out and explain to the fans what the situation is regarding the money they can or cannot spend. Listening to Simon Jordan on Talk Sport a couple of weeks ago, he suggested that Newcastle could spend £250 million in January and still be ok with FFP. Either he is talking rubbish or the club don’t know if they can spend that much. If they can spend big in January, I would look at Son from Spurs.
We absolutely ant spend the at much. I think we have spent our buffer and then some and now our rolling 105m loss allowance comes down to spending whatever profit comes in after paying the current gang. The adidas deal should bring some in but not a massive amount and of course any sales of players may generate some but I don’t see us getting more than 20m for any player we would be willing to sell
Howe for the long term. We knew this would happen with CL schedule and FFP plus our summer signings ultimately not being available other than Tino. Need to get the team back on the right track in January but a harsh few weeks are ahead of us, keep the faith.
Keith, if FFP is going to make any new arrivals tight, is their any chance he could use Issac Hayden as a stop gap in midfield until the summer. I might be wrong but thought I’d read / heard he was back on Tyneside. Great vids btw, enjoy your content.
Also Keith I would like to point out we have a New Jonny come lately Fan base now and some points of Social media have been disappointing lately remember when Bobby Robson was sacked same fans were moaning Should be careful what we wish For Eddie lives Breathe’s Football.🌑⚽️
03:14 This makes me worried about Eddie's management style. His role is to pick the best people for the job, and not being worried that he can hurt someone's feelings if they are left out. We need to start winning points again, I could not care less if Dan Burn or Trippier get offended if they are put on the bench for a game or two. I like Eddie but he must learn from his mistakes in the last few weeks.
Some people on here need a reality check as far as Eddie Howe’s future and that of Newcastle are concerned. We finished bottom of Champions League group, we didn’t even qualify for the Europa League and we were knocked out of the Carabao Cup! We’ve won one game in the last seven and after the next few league games we’ll probably be closer to the bottom of the league than European places.Every team has injuries and we’re no different.Lately his management skills have rightly been questioned , he continually plays Trippier who is clearly out of form and Burn who is simply not anywhere near a top level full back; add to that the selection of Almiron who is at best a championship player and it’s clear to see why we’re on the slide. Then there was the lack of due diligence regarding the signing of Tonali and £50 million plus wasted , that was unbelievable! Please don’t trot out the same old excuse “ we’re ahead of where we should be.” Many fans are sick of hearing it and I’m sure ,that privately ,the club owners are also fed up hearing it. A football manager needs to “manage” his squad and it is clear Howe is failing in this respect.Of course he has done well to improve us and get us to where we’re at now but he is not the person to take us to the top levels of the Premier League and Europe. We are no closer to winning a trophy and that just about sums us up. I can’t imagine what it will be like if we lose to Sunderland and that’s certainly not beyond the realms of possibility. Before some people say “I’m a fair weather supporter , I have been a supporter for sixty years and have seen all that goes with supporting a team such as NUFC. These current owners will not accept the current situation for much longer!
The one Newcastle really need to spend big is the DM; we just have nobody to cover before our back four and this is the big problem. For the rest of the others, we may just need the short term deal to give the injured players time to fully recover. Townsend is excellent in Luton and his deal will be expired in January; why can’t we bring someone like him in a short term? Getting someone like Phillips with so many unknowns may not the good option.
Keith, I wouldn't mind watching the boxing day video as long as it shows the match day fans being better than the screeching attention seeking social media 'fans', some of whom have been a disgrace. We've finally got to a position where we have absolute trust that the owners, management, players and fans are all wanting the same ultimate destination of success. But instead of realising it's a journey and accepting there will be ups and downs on the way, the online 'fans' instead seem intent on creating waves, disruption and disharmony and creating problems for everyone. Instead of being so entitled, like Everton and man u fans, how about they cut the team a bit of slack and trust they are on a long term upward journey. Just enjoy the journey instead of expecting success. Every fan can put the problems to rights in the pub to their mates, or whatever, but doing it online where the players, media and other fanbases can see is reflecting badly on the fans and will create an 'us and them' barrier between the fans and the team.
Surely, there will be offers to Man City to buy Phillips & surely, they will 100% want to sell him rather than loan him out. I keep hearing the online fans talking about the need to get the better players e.g. Guimaraes, Bottman & Isak nailed down on long contracts, but we need to use FFP rather than be held back by it. The top teams around Europe (especially Man City) seem to understand that a turnover of players is necessary to generate FFP strength & keep the squad fresh. I have a feeling that there will be bids in January and the summer window for some of our players & if someone makes a large bid for Isak, we should take it, no matter how much we'd love to keep him.
Ahead of the January transfer window, here are my thoughts on FFP. Sod it! Spend what you like. The Saudis are good for it. Look how much they've spent on 'over the hill' players for the PIF teams in the Saudi League! Then, argue the legal case for as long as you can deferring any punishment. When ,and if the punishment comes, you have either a loss of points or in the Championship. You still end up with a great team to continue in that season and the ones to come. That's what Man City did and they still haven't been punished! Would that work or am I missing something?
Let's just say for example man city FFP charges come back to haunt them Out of the premier league Champions league Your talking hundreds of millions £ in lost revenue potentially a lot more With the players wages contracts , clauses It's enough to cripple the biggest of clubs We are being careful with FFP for a reason ⚫⚪
Hi Keith, while I 100% agree we need another goalkeeper and possibly not just short term because this is the 2nd time Pope has had shoulder problems all be it not exactly the same injury it’s a massive concern for now and the future. The question is David De Gea has been a excellent top class keeper for Man U he is a excellent shot stopper but does he command his box? No for me and many Man U fans have said this along with his distribution being let’s say average at best, so is he the answer because it sounds like very much dubravka in many ways. I know Newcastle don’t play with a 6 and Bruno is not a 6 we all know that just watch our recent games and you’ll see how easy it is to get through our midfield even if you look back against Villa the first game of the season and yes we won 5-1 but it could easily have been much worse, I’m sure you have seen the massive gaps in the midfield all it takes is one pass and they are through us that easy. We definitely need another forward especially on the right as Miggy is not the answer so many attacking plays just come to a stop when the ball is on Miggy’s right foot and we know he works so hard for the team but his main job is to create chances and scores goals and unfortunately he’s been found out by teams now as they all know he won’t go on the outside of the full back and cross the ball. I know we can’t do everything at once especially when we have maybe 8 or more players still on the books from our championship days. We also need players for the now not just the future as it’s important for the club to be in European football next season and a top 6 finish is still possible but we need our better players back and quality added where we can. Thank you for the updates and I’ll wish you a health & happiness in 2024 🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤🤍
Suggest you have a listen to Klopp's press conference when asked about Newcastle and injuries. His assessment is spot on - games every three days only allows for recovery - no training/tactics, same players playing for weeks because of no available rotation, getting mentally and physically fatigued and injured, plus injured players coming back not match fit/sharp. It's SO obvious...so cut them all some slack... Miggy, Gordon and Bruno have had NO respite in that time...Botman, Burn and Longstaff still not match sharp and probably back a bit too soon. It's a no-win situation that should hopefully get better in the New Year... Newcastle have been building a team for now and the future very well so far - no one foresaw these crazy injuries that have simply ravaged us!
@@JulieDorsetBelle While I appreciate your reply I am answering the concerns on transfer business and I know only too well that playing more games along with travel and injuries is taking it’s toll on the players playing week in week out and I can see with my own eyes players are playing with slight injuries I don’t need Klopp too tell me that it’s obvious too see. As for Miggy I’m pointing out facts not having a go simply because we don’t have anyone else available too play on the right with Murphy’s injury. Just like I’m pointing out about Pope and his injury concerns for now and the future, so you think I’m having a go and not giving players slack🤷♂️ I’ll say again I’m reacting too the transfer window soon too be open and what positions might help Newcastle, so if you think we’ll give players a bit of slack and not buy anyone then if I was you I’d listen too Keith again because he is also pointing out where we could strengthen. Have a good evening 😉
@@geordietoonforlife.1155 Christ...you do waffle on - I prefer to respect the opinions of his peers - who've been in the same boat - rather than journos or you...FFP limits us whatever we do...Phillips on loan will do for me and maybe an attacker if we're lucky!
@@JulieDorsetBelle Waffle on coming from you 🤣🤣🤣 my god that’s rich🤣 if you don’t appreciate journalists then why watch their videos and reply to me. Ring ring that’s Klopp on the phone for you 😉🤣🤣 get some syrup for your waffle 😉🤣🤣
I honestly never expected transfer windows to be so depressing under Saudi ownership haha. Financial Fair Play is nothing more than a ploy to keep certain teams at the top, it absolutely stinks.
Surely you keep them for rotation? We’re already lacking squad depth and you want to get rid of 3 players for the what? 1 outfield player we’re going to get and the keeper?
We are buying to gain squad depth,,it be defeating the purpose if we only move players of the same position on,,,,we are not in that luxury position to be able to do that yet.
Lets be honest, the seasons over in regards to the league. No way are we getting top 4 and top 6 is questionable. Getting a result at Liverpool just goes a long way in Howes survival, but if they want to keep him they should be planning for next season. This season is over.
Need more recovery speed . Lose the ball and limited pace . Also maybe need to look at mixing formations against different teams . Set play needs real work Arm around Trippier as he seems to be distracted Midfield lose shape , lose men Front three ... Miggy no end product ...works his socks off but .. Only a personal opinion

@@geoffbell6247 🤣Bless...indeed you made valid points - and all eminently doable with fresh legs/fit squad and time to practise those set plans/formations in training (with a full squad)? Which isn't the case at the moment... Btw did you actually listen to Kloppy...one of Eddie's peers...who was in the same boat himself last season. I'll trust his assessment over yours...
Eddie Don't Let your Stubborness get you the Sack you Must put Some Trust in Karius or What's the point in him Being here in Stealing a Living Just Like Gillesspie But if you Will keep playing Dubravka who has Shipped 14 odd goals it's NOT GOOD ENOUGH Keith ask Eddie why Karius cannot get any game time man Bewildered i am
The bloke has spent £390m in two years and we're still in a relegation battle. Why weren't we trying to sign elite players on free transfers? We could've got Raphael Guerriero and Marcus Thuram for free
@@lconnerz100 tell why I have to answer to you it's BS we have been poor and I have had enough of pathetic excuses Liverpool will walk all over us tomorrow if they want too
