Hi, You can use putty index initially. Else the burs we use have a certain diameter. Choose the appropriate diameter bur depending on how much you intend to prepare and take the bur to its full depth at few positions on the tooth and then cut through rest of the tooth structure to get the desired reduction. 1. You can use adjacent teeth as reference 2. Use williams probe to measure 3 most ideal method make a index and use it as reference.

Know the diameter of the bur and make depth grooves by sinking the bur to its full/half diameter (as required). Then do the preparation.
