Oh wow this is a FUN one that hits real close to home with me and my love for packaging and artwork! It can lead to Blind Buy pain! So pop that tape in, I got you, let's go do this!
Haha! Yes. Vinegar Syndrome is almoust synonymous with this list! Thats part of why I love VS! Its like an art exhibition having these movies where you enjoy the covers as much or more than the movies. Nice list! Cheers!
This was a fun one Chase. So many titles that have been blind buys for me from Vinegar Syndrome. How can they not be with so many obscure titles? lol But they are marketing geniuses, no question. Can't tell you how many times I've looked at a VS title and been completely sold solely based on the packaging. Six String Samurai was a perfect example. If you haven't seen it yet, a great VS title in my opinion is Arnold. It's a horror/comedy with some big names. Huge mansion with some lighthearted comedy in graveyards, and some great gothic settings. A pretty unique and interesting story to boot. And that darn song will stay with you long after the movie is over! Slipcover is still available. 😉 Looking forward to part two of this video!
@devilshape6657 thanks man! I will totally grab arnold- I haven't seen that one but if someone recommends a VS title that highly I usually grab it if I have the money because I am just looking for the slightest reason to buy their stuff because the packaging and restoration all look so amazing!!
Great subject. I can think of many great Horror covers, especially VHS covers that are essentially bad movies. For example. Microwave Massacre(1979/1983), Drive-in Massacre (1976), The Blood Splattered Bride(1972), The Gore Gore Girls(1972), Mardi Gras Massacre (1978) A Night Out(1972) Blood Freak(1971)
oh man, yeah my nostalgia of walking around video rental stores in the early 80s judging movies based on cover art and a 3 sentence blurb on the back LOL
Chase, I collect 4Ks and Blu Rays for the movies first and the packaging second. It’s cool that Vinegar Syndrome is preserving movies, but I don’t own anything from them. I already own the Shout Select version of Road House and that’s good enough for me. I purge movies from my collection all of the time and I think it’s a healthy thing to do for every collector because we don’t have unlimited space.
Everyone collects differently for sure! I dont have unlimeted space either and I am not a person who buys everything jsut to accumulate titles... when I came back to collecting I said I was going to mainly focus on curating a collection of movies I love and want to own in their best, or "definitive" versions first and foremost....so I may double or triple dip on a certain movie that means a lot to me and never buy other films that everyone is running to get...t he movie is the most important thing obvioulsy but as someone who makes movie and paints and loves art and has so much nostalgia for the early 80s walking around mom' n' pop video rental stores jusdging what to rent based on nothing but cover art, that is a factor in buying some films... the packaging is part of the experience and enjoyment of the collection in my opinion...20 years from now will it be as much fun to just see a standard plastic case holding the movie or an incredible box set, with amazing art, and tons of extras? but I will buy plain old blu rays if that is the best there is!
outside of 2 OOP releases, I have everything I am looking for from Vinegar Syndrome right now - their selections are not for everyone for sure... some of my favorites from them are Roadhouse, Beastmaster, Texas Chainsaw 2, From Beyond, Cloak and Dagger, Showgirls, and Dr Terror's House of Horrors.... I have never been a huge watcher of super obscure films but I love the whole vibe and work VS does - I am hoping for some bigger titles to be mixed in from them!
@@AVAPopCulture that’s true. I know people on RU-vid that have fallen into the trap of having to buy the Steelbook and Slipcover versions and if Walmart has an exclusive and Target has an exclusive they have to buy them all. If someone has the money and the space to awesome, but I don’t that. I do like to have a 4K and Blu Ray copy of a movie and I love it when they’re sold as a combo, but now Warner Brothers are splitting up their 4K and Blu Ray releases and charge you the same price for the 4K even though you’re not getting a Blu Ray backup with it.
@@AVAPopCulture I’m a huge Texas Chainsaw 2 fan and From Beyond is great visually. Seeing Elizabeth Berkley naked is about the only thing I remember from Showgirls. 😂
This is a dangerous video, Chase. Even though you’re telling me it’s bad…..you’re showing me this AMAZING cover art. I love that Lycon Colony artwork and fighting the urge to look for it online😂 But I’m totally a sucker for artwork as well. A couple months back, I picked up The Sadness limited edition from Vinegar Syndrome on the secondary market and it was a blind buy based solely on the cover art of the slip case & slip cover. Haven’t watched it yet so I don’t know how good it is but just shows how far I’ll go if I like the artwork
Oh, I love all of this artwork! I am not sad I bought any of these with maybe the exception of POE (which I actually didnt have to buy lol) and maybe Demoniacs - I would rather just watch an adult film that is not trying to be evil to women on screen LOL
btw, I discovered that Visual Vengence has a whole line of like 15 movies with this type of incredible artwork...I may make a ridiculous collection section for these...check them out mvdshop.com/collections/visual-vengeance?srsltid=AfmBOoqzxHLzKb9x3xFfA2TEavh-7xpLJAnod3qAo3tQXbMy4vpka1dH
What a great video topic ! The art can for sure draw you in. I purchased Shark Exorcist just to have it on display on the shelf artwork showing next to my exorcist steelbook lol. Same for Cocaine Shark. Great covers ! Not so great movies but fun artwork is sometimes what it’s all about lol.
glad you had fun with it! I just wanted to do something fun and different and everyone knows I am so into artwork and stuff, I wanted to share some of these...but for me, in the end, the artwork is worth it to me even if the movie is bad LOL
It used to sucker me in back when I would go to my video store and I would see a cool VHS. Then when I started drinking craft beer I would buy the weirdest looking can and sometimes it wasn't always the best. I definitely see some cool covers out there but I try not to be tempted. Except for that Dracula versus Frankenstein from the severin sale that I still haven't got because they still haven't shipped my order.
Yeah they said 6 to 8 weeks after the sale. It's been July 12th is when I bought mine. I don't even want to watch those movies anymore haha. @@AVAPopCulture
Well, that cost me 5 blind buys (thanks)... can't resist good covers on bad movies... Dude, you have only cracked the surface on this topic. Holler at me and I can easily give you another 20 titles for two more videos.
I was at Orbits' actual store in Asheville, N.C. and I saw Red Sonja 4K for sale and had just received my Conan Chronicles set from Arrow, and I almost bought that same release to "complete my Conan collection." LOL I still think it falls in to the same universe. I remember it from my childhood but also remembered it wasn't that good and I ended up buying VanDam's Hard Target. I'm glad I went with Hard Target. I may buy Red Sonja 4K standard addition if I ever see it for cheap, to finish out my Arnold, Conan collection.
I am thrilled to have the Red Sonja 4k because I am a massive Arnold fan and I love watching it BUT Hard Target is the better movie there -I love Hard Target! I want to take the 3hr road trip north to Orbit's store and do a video on them
@AVAPopCulture We have a vacation home up in the mountains just outside Asheville, and we go up and visit a few times a year. We were last up there in June. Orbits physical store is really not that big but it has a little bit of everything from all over the world. They must do a lot of online sales because, like I said, their store is kinda small, but I still love to shop for physical media physically. There's something that is just so much better when you're actually holding in your hand what you want instead of looking at a screen online. Now that Best Buys finished with physical media the only place's in my small town that I can actually go and physically look, touch, hold media is sorry ass Walmart, Target, Big lots and honestly those shopping experiences are not that great. I'm looking forward to your video about Orbit. It's been one of my favorite media stores for the past few years, I didn't even realize they were an online store. LOL! Quite a large online store at that.
@bullboykennels I felt like with 31, Zombie was just a characature of himself...and the enjoyment in brutalizing women just put me off on Demoniacs...but everyone sees differently and that is what makes movies awesome
It's actually almost impressive that someone can make a bad movie based on jack the ripper when you think about how good the source material is 😂😂 Good cover art definitely tricked me into watching some bad movies in the 80s and 90s . But not so much today. The last blind buy that fooled me with good cover art was Drive Away Dolls, which I thought was a kind of modern Thelma and Louise with a Tarantino inspired style. That's not what I got 😆😉
Right? Jack the Ripper has soooooo much potential to go so many different ways! I have so many fond memories of picking movies out in the early 80s a video rental store based on the cover art- that nostalgia can get me!! LOL
Other than packaging, fave actors is another one that gets my attention. For example, I will buy anything if Elisabeth Shue is in it. Childhood crush that never went away. Heck, I even bought Piranha 3D (and actually enjoyed it) 🤣
@@AVAPopCultureFor me it was a little different. I was an 11 year old kid at the theatre about to watch Adventures In Babysitting. She started doing that dance in her bedroom to "Then He Kissed Me," and my jaw literally dropped. That was it. I remember saving up my money and buying the videocassette for over $100 as they weren't readily available at that time. My life savings! 🤣 Good taste brother!
The German mediabooks are good for having GREAT artwork (and some nude artwork) and having a movie that isn't the greatest. I just watched "The Strangeness" that I got in a German mediabook. The front and back cover plus the two discs had female nudity on them. The movie itself had NO nudity and was kind of meh. I'll probably still keep the mediabook for the great artwork and presentation.
That media book is so deceptive, as you said there's no nudity in the film and the monster is barely in the film and done in extremely primitive stop motion. Strangeness is 1 of the most boring horror films of the 80s.
Wait… Red Sonja a bad movie??? What!!!!!???!! I fucking love Red Sonja haha more the Barbarian. Fight me I don’t care 😂 I love this movie. & yea that art work is 🔥🔥
I love the movie too LOL but it is still considered a bad movie by most - Arnold hates it LOL and I put it in the bad movies I love categorey lol...that artwork is epic though
Watch trailers. A lot of this stuff can be sampled on Tubi. I've never seen any of the Visual Vengeance titles but I knew they were all old no budget SOV garbage with fancy misleading art. That Poe movie is actually a sequel to a 2011 film of the same format called Poe: Project of Evil. The cool part about those is they were filmmaker challenges to shoot their segments in 3 days so from a filmmaker perspective maybe that's an aspect you can appreciate. I received Tenkiller and Amazon Jail as part of last year's subscription and Tenkiller is terrible. I sold it, as the art is irrelevant to me if I dislike the film. Amazon Jail is what I call a sleazy teasy, but it doesn't even have good fake sex, it's mostly sweaty women getting their chests fondled and moaning ridiculously. It's not even a real women in prison movie as they're just in a bamboo cage in a jungle. It's a film that can be arousing but isn't actual porn so what's the point? Was never into that skin max stuff, for guys who want the real thing we know where to go. Did you check out Part 2? It's a slapstick comedy and 10 times more terrible. There is a 45+ minute women in prison doc with clips from much better films, on the extras in that set, in case you missed it.
hey! yeah this is actually Poe Project of Evil that I have here and it is just not for me lol...I appreciate the challenge part of it and I dont like to criticize indie filmmakers for trying to do their best but the way they went with the subject matter just isnt for me... I try some things before I buy, but sometimes in sales etc I will get caught up like anyone else and there is an excitement that I get back from picking a moive based on awesome art and a little description - it takes me back to being a kid in the early 80s in video rental stores and occasionally, I'll pay for that fun and nostalgia with a stinker LOL I agree on Amazon Women...it doesnt go far enough to be a turn on and goes to far to be an actual movie with a plot LOL - I will check out thsoe extras now that you recommended them though! Skin Max wasnt my thing either -either just have the nudity etc as part of a good movie I want to watch or I can watch an actual adult film if I wanted more than that hahaha! Tenkiller is painfully boring but for $13 I will keep it haha!
