The original Bond, James Bond was supposed to be funny because he's mocking Sylvia by throwing her, "Trench, Sylvia Trench" line back in her face. But Connery delivered it like a bad-ass and the rest is history. Casino Royale's might by my favorite. That scene was awesome.
Lasenby gets the shaft but in all fairness he barley had a chance. He barley had any experience acting, had to ride the coat tail of Connery, and didn't have another shot at it because ohmss was his only outing but I still feel bad leaving him out
The first one, from Dr. No, will always be my favourite. Not only because it's the first and original one, but because Connery is so self-assured when he says it. He means it. And his look at that moment is killer.
"Why is this funny?" Well, I think because he was basically taunting and mocking her with it. if you listen to the whole scene, the way she says. "Trench,... Sylvia Trench" and he throws it back at her, almost with a mocking glare "Bond,... James Bond".
I think what I like most about "the line" is that in Dr. No, it seems like Bond is originally just copying the delivery of "Ms...?" "Trench, Sylvia Trench" by introducing himself as "Bond, James Bond." I like to imagine that Bond liked that way of introducing himself and picked it up for regular use after that encounter. I also think that's what Terence Young meant by him thinking the scene is comical. Sylvia introduces herself in a rather distinctive manner, and Bond being the smarmy so-and-so he is, he'll take notice of that and use it as a means of leveling the playing field with her.
when did he say it in tomorrow never dies I have forgotten? oh wait yeah how could I forget that was actually quite good I enjoyed Dalton's ones especially in the living daylights I love how he says it like it is a mandatory thing when on a mission to say his name and he is bored of saying it over and over again!
The GoldenEye one is so iconic, with the TND one exuding sophistication, the TWINE one is pure fan wank (but good fan wank) and the DAD one is similar to TND
Goldfinger is a superb one, Calvin, but I actually really like the one from 'A View to a Kill' where Bond introduces himself properly to Stacey and the Police Chief for the first time. 'Well, actually Captain, I'm with the British Secret Service. The name is Bond, James Bond!'. I love Moore's delivery in that one!
Regarding the comedy, I had read in the official Bond encyclopedia that Young mentioned that the delivery sparked a few laughs among the crew because Connery was suppose to say the line in a haze of cigarette smoke, but he got ahead of himself.
The Casino Royale one is so cool because it's the culmination of a drawn out scene that shows how badass and intimidating Craig's Bond is. There's so much more to it than just the line and it's delivery; it's how the shot that hits Mr White straight after the phone call makes you shit yourself, it's how Mr White has to crawl across the steps as the camera pans up and it's how Bond, instead of carrying a tiny toy pistol, is instead holding a full sized silenced MP5.
Craig's delivery in Casino Royale has to be my favourite of all time! So good! And Calvin, you've never given us your top 10 greatest Bond villains!!! Please do that next!!
I like Roger Moore's delivery of the line in Octopussy, at the casino. "The name's Bond (pause - looks at the thug standing in the back ground, smiles to himself) James Bond"
Great video! Quite a daring move to not rank the holy introduction scene higher! But I love videos where people just go against general opinions and stress their own. I do agree Connery's one in Goldfinger is a great one! I also was expecting you to maybe pick the other TWINE one. Also I gotta say, I loved the latest introduction in SPECTRE, defenitely a great one to me! Love how Craig did that this time! (not typing spoilers for those who havent seen it)
I thought that was an editing error when 6/5 came at the same time... to be honest I prefer Pierce's delivery. Oh yeah and in Die Another Day, when he walks into the hotel with his shirt half off, that was hilarious!
We can agree to disagree on this one. Brosnan admittedly isn't one of my favorite Bond actors, but I really don't prefer his delivery of any of the "Bond, James Bond" lines except for #2 on this list. His delivery comes across as just bland and boring to me, especially at the party in Tomorrow Never Dies. Different strokes for different folks, though.
I love the line delivered by Moore in Octopussy when he's invited to play Backgammon... "Bond... James Bond, and thank you, I'd be delighted" with a little side smile going on too.
I introduce myself like Bond except I say, "the name is Reed, James Reed." and the reaction I usually get from the person or people I say it to is laughter.
To me, the funniest Roger Moore line wasn't supposed to be funny. Bond: I have to get her off! Carter: How?! Bond: The equipment Q sent for me, can I have it?
I always liked his introduction to Lazar in The Man With The Golden Gun. It had a real dark undercurrent to it, which gave it an edge that really worked well.
I love the end of Casino Royale. It just marked the origin, all that could have made it better would have been if a second Gun Barrel came right after it.
If it wasn't for the Cigar the Dr. No one wouldn't be anywhere near as cool XD and I completely forgot about The World is not Enough! damn that is a good one.
The Pierce Brosnan one you have at 5/6 is my personal favorite. And he to me is Bond, i grew up with him and just thought he was the coolest guy ever. I really like Roger Moore i just never really believed in him as bond. Pierece combines the fantasy with reality in a really clever way for me. Loving these videos though mate! Brill stuff, I'd love to see what your top ten action scenes are from bond. My top one for sure is the printing press scene in Tomorrow never dies (i know its crazy) but i just used to love it, great gun fighting and fight scenes all in one. I love the tank chase in goldeneye and (again a bit crazy) the golden gate fight in a view to a kill
The Dr No one has to be top of the pile. It's an iconic piece of cinema history. It leaves the audience in no doubt that the bad guys have just lost, even though 95% of the film is still to run.
In your 2012 video about the best Bond introductions you say "There has never been a cooler delivery of that line" about Connery in Dr. No, so I thought he was going to be number 1 here. You're full of surprises...
Always good to watch your videos, Calvin! How about doing a Top 10 villian's motive/objective list? What's at stake for Queen & Country? Wiping out the entire human race in Moonraker would probably be the most significant... ;-)
I just rewatched NSNA this weekend and was shocked by how badly that line was delivered (well, the same could be said about most of this film). Connery says it without confidence or charisma, almost in a tongue-in-cheek manner, which reminds me of the campy tone adopted by Moore during most of his tenure.
Terence Young: “Bond, James Bond was supposed to be humorous!” Also Terence Young: *creates one of the coolest, most suave introductions in cinema history* Task Failed Successfully!
It would be hilarious if the villains introduced themselves like that too, in which case it would go: Dishonorable: Renard (because he doesn't use his surname all that often and probably wouldn't when introducing himself) Honorable: Dr. Kananga 10: Max Zorin 9: Auric Goldfinger 8: Francisco Scaramanga 7: Alec Trevelyan 6: Julius No 5: Rosa Klebb 4: Le Chiffre 3: Dominic Greene (even though he and his movie were boring) 2: Raoul Silva 1: Ernst Stavro Blofeld
Another good one from the Moore comes from The Spy Who Loved Me when does the whole "Bond. James Bond." schtick on Kalba, whose reaction to it was an indifferent "What of it"
+Calvin Dyson | James Bond Reviewer I was reading a Bond novel today and I actually just thought to myself "screw it, I'm imagining this guy as Bond" as a joke, then one chapter lead to another and now I'll never stop picturing you as him when I read the aforementioned novels.
Nice video, I agree with you for the most part. But I think that it may have been harsh to downgrade the Brosnan's line from The World is Not enough because of the accent. I presumed it kind of sounded a bit different because they're running away and trying to escape, instead of it actually being intentionally different or him being Irish. His accent in Goldeneye was fine.
+Dylan8888888888 I never really noticed Brosnan's Irish accent slip in except for when he got really angry, or when he was in the middle of an action scene.
I think the Casino Royale delivery is the best one. There's something to really be said about how well coregraphed the final scene is, and the line delivery is the icing on the cake. The World is Not Enough's delivery is a close second, followed by the iconic Dr. No delivery. And I would've tossed out an honorable mention to Tomorrow Never Dies, it's the first time since the Connery era that Bond delivers the line without saying "My name is" or "The Name's".
I always had a soft spot for the Roger Moore, A View To A Kill, in front of the fire truck. His voice is like velvet, so smooth. It's like "this is my last time" and he brings his A-game, which is hilarious because the police chief just brushes it off and I'm always thinking, back off man and show some F**king respect!
I know you probably get a lot of suggestions for a top ten one liners video, but may I suggest- TWO such videos: one where he says the line before the death, and one where the line is spoken after the death
The ones I really hate are the Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day ones. The pause after "The name's Bond" and the cuts to all the characters faces waiting patiently for 007 to finish "James Bond" just bugs me. It's as if Brosnan wants applause are saying it. I love the Spy Who Loved Me one where the guys is like "Yeah.... and?" Always makes me laugh and I reckon if someone had done that to Brosnan's Bond he would have started crying "But this is my moment!" Dr No is the best imo and the reason I love it is something not mentioned by you here, but the way he only says his name in that odd way is because he's copying Miss Trench. Sylvia Trench. It just makes it cooler.
I normally don't give rankings too much thought because I personally don't see much point in ranking things that one likes, but since this a nice and fun idea for a ranking, I'll play along and choose Dr. No as 1 and Casino Royale as 2. Beyond that I don't have much of an opinion because I don't really remember many introductions 😅
1:02 is that a secret never discovered before Timothy Dalton cameo in a Conner Bond film? (probably not but the resemblance in that extra on the left is uncanny)
I actually like Dalton's line in Licence to Kill which most people cant remember ...when Sanchez calls him to his room after he was winning in the Casino
