I guess my favourite moment ever is when Tom forces Mary to realize that she's so bitter about her own life that she's destroying Edith's and everyone else's to avoid her own unhappiness. The climax is reached when he shouts her in anger: "You're a coward, Mary! Like all bullies you're a coward!".

John Watson I never really thought of Thomas as a jerk myself. I think he was just looking for something better then what he had. He had a heart. He cried when his blind solider friend killed himself and he stood up for Sybbie and George when the nanny mistreated them.

I think Robert's burst ulcer scene and Cora telling him "we won't let this be it" should have made the list. Wow! So powerful and moving! All that the two of them had gone through over many years of marriage - death of their youngest, death of their son-in-law, temptation to go all the way with unfaithfulness, etc. Their marriage bond was strong throughout and in spite of all the storms, heartaches, and even good times, and this scene really showed it. Edith calling Mary a bitch should've been here as well and Edith finally getting her happy ending (Wow! What an absolutely gorgeous dress!!!!! I think it was the most beautiful I have ever seen!!!) I also think any of the very special and toughing moments between Lady Mary and Carson should have been included.

Why were these two main characters Sybil and Matthew written out of the series? Was it simply a matter of money or did they find better roles and money elsewhere? I find the credits appearing alphabetically amusing. Was it because they didn't want hard feelings as to who are the most main characters and would the separation of the upper class vs the servant characters have anything to do with it. We Americans not being familiar with who the popular celebrities with the most impressive resumes in British cinema and TV haven't a clue as to who's who. All we know is about the American, Elizabeth McGovern still being rather beautiful in her advancing years. Wouldn't Kim Catrell of Sex and the City fame, who traced her British and Canadian ancestry back on a reality TV show, be a hoot in one of those prim and proper British characters?

@jimduffy7199

Sir Eugene Courtney The actors had signed on for three seasons. When it was renewed for a fourth most actors signed up. They chose not to and to make films instead. Divorce in the 1920s was scandalous - so the only option was death. If the actors hadn't decided to leave their characters wouldn't have been killed off.

In the UK it wasn't so much Mathews dying that caused the outcry, but the outcry was that it happened on the Christmas Day Special, right at the end of the show. In Britian we like our Christmas Day viewing to be 'feel-good.' Everything else was turning that way, the new hier, servants getting differences sorted out etc . Mathew's sudden death spoilt Christmas day for many viewers after such a positive build up!! The screenwriter actually had to defend his decision to kill Matthew on that day, in a local paper! I noticed on the box sets, they have separated this out from the Christmas hunt......

The Kemal Pamuk scene was one of the greatest dark comedy moments in an English Drama EVER! Froggat, Dockery and McGovern deserved an award for just that few minutes of amazing acting alone! I think that when Edith and Mary have their cat fight in the final season. It was built up for so long and I thought that the writers were going to make me furious if I didn't get to see Edith finally tell Mary what she really is. Along with Thomas's suicide, and Isis's sad death. Who didn't shed tears for sweet Isis when she passed on?

These are AWFUL choices!!!! It says "BEST" moments, holy cow, these are all death and dying and sadness. Sheesh. TERRIBLE. Some True Best Moments: 10. Lady Grantham (Maggie Smith) and Isobel Crawley have it out. 9. Gwen's search to be secretary; and the Win when Branson & Sybil give her the news; returns married & remembers Sybil. 8. Anna brings Bates a tray of dinner after he's let go; Bates brings her a tray when he hears she's ill. 7. Edith is heralded for helping the wounded soldiers. 6. William & Matthew return to Downton after reportedly MIA. 5. Lord Grantham calls Mrs. Patmore to the study to let her know he's sending her to London to have cataracts removed; Mrs. P's reaction. 4. Bates is exonerated and reunites with Anna. 3. Any segment with Branson & Sybil . . . 2. Lord Grantham backs Mary and tells her to go to America and find her man. 1. Matthew proposed to Mary with the snow swirling about.

There are so many amazing scenes, I wouldn't attempt to rank them . . . but I think Anna and Bates scenes, several of them, should be at the top of the list. It says a lot that the first three seasons feature far more on this list than the last three. Seasons 4, 5 and 6 had some great moments but they didn't live up to the same standard. That said, some moments that could have been included are: 1. Bertie and Edith's fall out, reconciliation and marriage 2. Mary's haircut 3. The car racing scene 4. Rose's wedding that nearly didn't happen, thanks to her mother 5. Lord Sinderby's mistress and illegitimate son turning up in front of Lord Sinderby's family 6. Thomas's attempted suicide and subsequent recovery

I kinda wished Lady edith's second wedding (especially her comming of the staircase and robert's reaction to it) should be on it. I mean in season 1 she was a jelous bitter woman who was there least favorite daughter and prob would become a old maid. But by then end she was the strongest, most modern living Crawley, made Robert so proud (prob prouder then he is on Mary) and not to forget that she got married and outranked them all

You forgot so many great moments, like when Sybil accepts to elope with Branson, Mary and Matthew's wedding, Branson and Matthew's friendship, (anything about Branson), Rose's wedding, Edith's actual wedding, Edith calling Mary a b*tch, anything about Thomas, seriously, so many moments!

This show died when Mathew did. And then the horrible rape subplot and how Thomas was never given proper attention. Seriously not one single Thomas scene in the list? When the show brushed off Thomas suicide attempt... it just ended in a sour note. But, those first seasons and the Great War plot was some of the best television ever had.
@spacewaifuu

I agree, I´m surprised they´ve mentioned the issue about accidental abortion, rape and death but not even one hint about Thomas, who´s one of the most suffered characters. I´d wish they had mention the suicide attempt or the fight with Jimmy after kissing him (or when they have to say goodbye and he cries). I feel a little dissapointed they´ve made a honourable mention of Sybil´s dress but not about Thomas. It´s kind of ridicolous. At least I would have changed it for Lavinia´s death, if they don´t want to mention Thomas ._. It was a good list but that bothered me.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY! The show killed the only characters who I truly supported and then they never granted Thomas the attention and happy ending he deserves
@3choBlast3r
@3choBlast3r 7 лет назад
No it did not .. and what's the big deal with the rape subplot.. you think that shit doesn't happen in real life? Esp back then? It was GENIUS .. it was painful, raw, real .. it's supposed to anger you and make you feel helpless, make you sympathise and realise what the person who got raped goes trough. Jesus you people expect every TV show to be some bullshit fairy tale where every little detail is perfect and everyone gets a happy ending etc. It's not.. and if you hadn't figured that out by the time Sybil died, you should have just watched some other cheesy ass show.

I don't think anyone's claiming that television should never tackle the topic of rape. There are better and worse ways of handling it, though, and Downton's handling of Anna was quite exploitative. The character became a punching bag, hit by one misfortune after another. There is this tradition in TV and movies that suffering and trauma have to be seen to be believed, which is not a great way to process these things, actually, and also has negative ramifications for real-life cases (where people are hesitant to believe the seriousness of the trauma if it seems like the victim isn't shaken enough, doesn't react in a certain way etc.) What Downton did is skirting way too close to what's been termed "narrative sadism."

You can't restrict it to just 10… there are so many great moments in Downton!
@amberpippin7538
@amberpippin7538 7 лет назад
There are honestly too many good moments to cut it down to just 10. There are many moments that others have brought up which deserved a mention. I mean, the Dowager Countess' one-liners alone deserve a mention! I came to Downton Abbey late. I streamed it through my Amazon Prime membership a few years behind the broadcast. I didn't read anything about the series. I wanted to watch it completely fresh. Like many others, the death of Sybil was horrifying. That was just gut-wrenching! I really liked her character. But the moment I will never forget is Matthew driving down that country road so happy after his son's birth, and the camera cutting away to show that oncoming truck. I just started crying out, "No, no, no!" I knew what was coming. And when it showed him bleeding out, I just bawled and bawled and bawled. I don't think I've ever been that devastated by a character's death in my life! I LOVED Matthew! He was such a great character! I then went and read articles about how fans had reacted to that event, and was glad to read that I was certainly not alone in my response. I love the show as a whole, but it just wasn't the same after he was gone. Seasons 1-3 will always be my favorite due to Matthew's presence. And Mary was so much more likable when she was with Matthew. He brought out the best in her. None of the love interests that followed could hold a candle to Matthew! And I have to agree that all the bad situations that kept hitting Mr. Bates and Anna just got to the point of being torture for torture's sake. Seriously, cut them some slack! And Anna's rape can't just be looked at as an isolated incident. The rape of female characters has become a way-too-frequently-used plot device for mostly-male TV writers. It's a major problem. It's a way to knock female characters down when the male writers think they've become a) too happy, b) too independent, c) too big for their britches. In this instance is was just gratuitous torture for Downton Abbey's hard luck cases.

Oh, come on. So much you overlooked! Edith's wedding to Lord Hexham shouldn't be out of this list. Matthew getting up for the first time and walking after his injury was epic. That amazing scene when Ethel watches her boy go away is simply perfect, even though it's so perfectly sad. Thomas, in a way, IS Downton Abbey and didn't get mentioned (in my mind, if there was a narrator in this story, Thomas would be one option and Branson would be the other). But even the small moments in this show were out of this world. I mean, Mary coming down the stairs in her wedding dress while her two fathers watch her. Gwen getting a job and jumping around with Sybil and Branson on the episode with the cricket match. Lady Violet announcing the best bloom of the season. Isobel and Lord Merton getting married. Mr. Molesley becoming a teacher. Thomas saving little Sybil from that monster of a nanny and playing with master George. Lady Sybil's cake. Branson dancing with Lady Violet. Lord Grantham taking Isis to his bed and falling in love with his new puppy. Mr. Bates taking a tray to Anna because she's sick. The memorial for Mrs. Patmore's nephew. Lady Violet's memories from her trip to Russia. Rose dancing with the Prince of Wales on her ball and getting her father in law's admiration. I could be here for days.
