I used to be REALLY into JRPGs years ago but I drifted more into the action/adventure story driven genre for a long time. This year I’ve been giving some of these newer titles a chance and I haven’t been disappointed. 👍

Japanese made RPGs dropen in quality on average from about 2006 to 2013(there were still some gems tough) but since 2017 I would say there have been more good JRPGs than WRPS and I love both of them equally. RPGs no matter where they are made are my favorite genre.

The gameplay was good, the story was a cliche. The interactions also get annoying at some point. It's the same "oh you're feeling down? Don't give up I believe in you!" throughout the entire game. I also don't like that the characters have to explain what you just witnessed happen a minute ago. After every bit of the story there's a "oh, you mean to say this happened because of this obvious reason that you can deduce by yourself?" Maybe I'm too old and I've already seen this format over and over again, just wish they'd polish this aspect of games a bit more.

That is the most MERCILESS execution of saying Nier Replicant's full title, I've ever heard! 10 out-of 10 stars. Well done Falcon! :D I also wanted-to shoutout the trend of Marvel Vs Capcom-esque AI team fighting assists with games like the Tales series, Scarlet Nexus, Guardians of the Galaxy and others that bring team attacks on-command from specific characters, also in Mass Effect and even to a degree MGSV (from a tactical perspective). I feel it IS noteworthy for the kind-of action RPG synergy that's being added to the combat... and I LIKE IT. I hope to see these systems stick around for another year at-least.

Scarlett Nexus was good... But became pretty hard to follow in the later stages imo. I wouldn't say it's one of the best, but still good for a playthrough or two given how differently the stories playout

But there are the horrible fallout 76 and cyberpunk so I see your point lol I might have to start giving more JRPGs a try since there are so many good ones.

Having a game that retains the same qualities you enjoyed from the first is nice, but way too many people essentially want the same game with a new coat of paint or stuff they could essentially get as dlc (looking at you atlas).

Outriders right now might be a nice game to pick up. Definitively not top of the line, but with it being currently on big sale on Steam, plus with their New Horizons update which did some really important improvements do make the game much more appealing than what it was back at launch.

I picked up Shin Megami after never knowing ANYTHING about the series, because it just seemed interesting….. I haven’t been able to put it down. The gameplay is really addictive and I’m intrigued by the story, especially when Lucifer popped up. 👀

Shin megami tensei kind of ruined Pokemon for me because it showed me what could have been. Pokemon is just a toy company that makes video games sometimes whereas shin megami tensei that has only gotten deeper and more satisfying with every release. They haven't tried adding demons every game, instead opting for different mechanics with every spin off while still retaining core SMT gameplay

Question, ever since i got shin megami ive had a weird issue where the game will be in the switch but ill get a popup saying i removed the cartridge improperly, it only happens with this game, ever had that issue?

The pokemon company have been too comfortable with their game design, because it doesn't matter what they do, people just buy it.

I have just started playing it but I might be a bit jaded as coming off of just finishing Y’s VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana it just feels like Tales of Arise is a downgrade in battle mechanics from that game.

So far I've found smt 5 to be a bit of a letdown. The combat is great and it's fun fusing different demons but the environments are a bit empty and the story is kind of bland.

@@codyb.3015 I beat the second boss already and went through that section. It was interesting but not overly so. I found smt 4 had a lot more going on. I've put about 12 hours in but don't feel all that motivated to play. Surprising as it was my most anticipated game of 2021. After such a long wait my hopes were pretty high but just feels a bit lacking.

@@Coarse-wuan I’m taking my time with it but if you have played the other airship syndicate game they are both decently paced and the way you can customize your hero’s is really clean and simple. If you watch a review it’s probably 30 hours give or take but imo it’s well made and I generally like league related things minus the actual game since I’m so very burnt out

I would recommend the Tiny Tina Assault on Dragons Keep Dungeons & Dragons like DLC that was recently released as a stand alone. It's THE best Borderlands 2 DLC and they not only made it a stand alone, but gave it a graphical facelift, mixed in some of the drops from the main Borderlands 2, new content, and just increased the fun factor about 40% when it comes to loot that drop compared to the original. The guns and items in the game are the loot with crazy mechanics and effects that make the experience unique and the combinations you can do with them can create crazy builds. Along with the comedy in this DLC is just... ohh it's top notch. Great release in 2021 that builds up to the new Borderlands WONDERLANDS game that is a sequel yet spiritual successor to that Dragon Keep DLC.

I 10000000% agree with the comments on the mention of Biomutant, the small team that made that game are onto something but just not there yet. Biomutant and Outriders are heavily discounted on PC at the time of posting for black Friday. I paid 60 and preordered Biomutant and I hope that money helps them make a great franchise to fill the void left after Fable 3.

Tales of Arise definitely. Personally my game of the year this 2021. Ender Lilies, Scarlet Nexus, Persona 5 Strikers, Nier Replicant, SMT 5 and MH Rise are also definitely a must play.

Happened to me too that's why i just told myself to stop, take a deep breath and relax. Now i only focus on games i really enjoy and want to play. There is no rush i don't have to play every new title that comes out. It's only our brains playing tricks on us.

I would strongly recommend Tales of Arise (Thumbnail) to anyone it's VERY engaging storie wise & gameplay wise. Just when I thought I was done I still had a long way to go. That being said this game takes a longggg while to finish at least for those who like to complete everything, read everything, fight everything & to have the best of best weapons. Although, it's overall worth it since everything you do is not for nothing. Not to mention, the character all have there own in-depth backstory that alllows you feel more connected to them in the best way possible. The charisma that falls into these characters are very unique & wonderful. It's absolutely astonishing how much emotional/logical dialogue they put into each character. Best JRPG 2021 IMO & I believe everyone should enjoy the experience 🖤!

Ya, though imo it could've been even better if they would've made more lore/character driven side quests, expanded on the last arc of the game a bit by adding some more story segments and dungeons (one complaint i keep seeing is that it's too much exposition in a row and could've been broken up a bit with more dungeons/battles and i somewhat agree), will also say -SPOILER WARNING FOR A REGION'S NAME- they should've made the optional info you get from the computers in the restricted section of Lenegis mandatory as it gives some info i feel is required to be known to get a better understanding of the story. Finally the ally AI and the AI strategy menu were bad: allies, especially healers and mages. died too easily as they constantly ran up to the enemy when the enemy was attacking and the AI Strategy menu was party based (as in all allies follow that AI setting) instead of having separate AI strategies for each character like past games did which would likely fix some of the issues with the AI (such as if there was an option to tell healers/mages to fight from a distance like past games had). But ya even considering all of this it's still a 9/10 game for me. And while the Dev team said they wouldn't make one i kinda hope they make a sequel due to how the game ended leading to a lot of new areas to explore not to mention I'd like to see how things changed for the characters/world after the ending....the credits of course give an idea but are too short to see if they met any other issues or not.

I completely agree, the AI menu should have definitely been seperate especially with tactics when it comes to healers & mages such as "play from a distance" as you mentioned or having specific AI focus on healing & another on attacking. I feel as if that would have really helped the game combat wise 👌🏾. Expanding the game with more immersed side quest & dungeons would have made the game length a little closer to previous tales titles which people would have really enjoyed. Although, it still wouldn't have been as equivalent but it'll prevent players from tackling the main quest so often 😌. It truly does seem like this game should have a sequel. I really hope the devs change their mind on not having a sequel because it could potentially turn out to be one the best games in history. All & all I give this game the same rating 9/10 especially since it's actually worth it's cost ☀.

Tales of Beseria has the much better story and characters. Arise is far too campy, cheesy and took me out of the game...I am just surprised this came AFTER berseria as if they learned only to take three steps back while Tales of graces has the more engaging combat period.

I've put a few hundred hours into Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and that's actually a full on RPG that came out in 2021. Too bad remakes and action games are seen as being more deserving for some reason

Tales of Arise was snubbed in several categories at Game Awards. It's really really good. If you like JRPGS or just great stories. This is an amazing game. One of the most important stories in the past few years as well

@@apananabeel some of it is I'll say that. But that's a lot of RPGs. But I would say a good portion is quite serious as far as the main quest goes. And well written. Very good character development. And a plot that actually means something in terms of in game and the world.

Thanks for the video; It’s an interesting list. The couple (Eastward and Guardians) that get noted as “not really RPG’s”, and the omission of Atelier Ryza 2, Yakuza Like a Dragon, and Ys XI Monstrum Nox, make the list feel strange to me. Still good to see your choices. 😊

I have to say to anyone curious about tales of arise, I'd 100% recommend it to anyone who wants a fantastic and interesting story with great characters and character moments. It also has good, fun, and interesting gameplay with a good easy to learn hard to master vibe. It's a very colorful and vibrant game with great action cutscenes and good voice acting on both English and Japanese. Altogether I'd say from my playthrough that I've streamed all of so far I'd say it's a solid 9/10 and could go for game of the year for me, I've also only put in about 30 hours with side quests included and I'm only half way through the story so be prepared for a long ride on this one. So, I don't know if this counts since its just a remaster to consoles, but the Castlevania Advance Collection is just stellar. Those are certainly Metroidvanias and probably 3 of the best (OK 2 of the best and 1 that was figuring itself out) plus Dracula X which isn't an par with with Rondo of Blood, but I'd argue is still very good.

Tales of Arise was fantastic, and about 50-60 hours, now if youre new to rpgs that s great. If youre a tales veteran it will feel a little short, but 10/10 best visuals in a tales of game.

@@TreSwayy Ultimately it depends on how each individual plays. For example: -some people play skipping all cutscenes (i question why you'd play a rpg if you do this but some people do) -some people only do the main story and nothing else -some people will do main story, some skits, some quests -some people will do main story, all skits, all quests -some people will do main story, all skits, all quests, and read every npc dialogue in the game and even go back to the same npcs after major story events/chapters/days end to see if dialogue changes (I do this for example...doesn't too it too much in Arise but in Trails each in game day has about 3 to 4 different dialgoues for every single npc you can get to each in game day thus you can see how npcs lives change over the course of the game). -some people do all of the above and then add in serious grinding as well for even longer times As for Arise i was able to get about 100 hours with the second to last option and very light grinding and I've yet to finish the post game quests you get after beating the final boss or get the Platinum (putting it off to see if any other new dlc like SAO's is added and may do it later....hoping any new stuff is more fairly priced though as i'm not spending $15 for SAOs and waiting for that to go on sale). As for my highest hour count for 1 run it goes to Trails of Cold Steel 4 at a crazy 175 hours for my first playthrough due to how much i go running around looking for new npc dialogue lol, doing that alone is likely to add about 30 to 50 hours alone to your playtime.

Nothing new, but I did spent a lot of time in RPGs this year myself, too. I finished CrossCode and played the DLC that came out in February; one of the best games I’ve ever played. Then Old School RuneScape came to Steam and I started a new account, and put over 800 hours between it and RS3 for the next five months. Then came Tales of Maj’Eyal, which I was meaning to put time into for a while, and I also tried the Bandai’s Tales of series with Berseria, and I gave up on it due to the excessive amounts of pointless systems that turned the experience into a menu simulator. And a little bit of Stoneshard, because it had its biggest update so far a couple weeks ago. I was also thinking about giving Skyrim another go, as I haven’t played that game since 2014 and would like to see how I feel about it today. I’ve been trying to play Oblivion for the last 8 years, but it’s never worked out.

I miss old school rpg’s tbh. I’m not dissing the Japanese-rpg fad or anime, but I want today’s action rpg gameplay with the old school western rpg richness that comes with creating your own character and getting lost in whatever world the creators poured their creativity into. Mass Effect was awesome, and playing the LE made me realise how lame the effort is as of late to create new content.

As a Darkest Dungeon player, I completely agree with you about the purpose of a Darkest Dungeon 2, Falcon. There's no point in making the same game again the same way there is for a game with a specific plot which can be progressed further in later games. I'd say it's the same for a lot of procedural, multi-playthrough games - think of Rimworld as another AA example.

Guardians of the Galaxy has been the biggest surprise of the year for me, stunning game, amazing game, worth the 60 but its on atm for under 40 on XB and PS, worth every single penny and then some.

Same! I'm in the last couple of chapter's now. Great game. Unfortunately I got it on the ps4 (pro) and it really is a ps5 game. It really fuckin struggles on the system. The fps drops during hectic moment's is pretty awful. Despite that, it's been an amazing, fun romp into that world. Highly recommend. Though to anyone reading, if you want a "proper" experience, play it on modern hardware. I'll certainly replay it when I get my ps5 (eventually...) so many instances where I'm like "I think that's supposed to pop more" etc. Great game though.

@@michaeloconnor1281 Ah mate when you play it on the PS5 put it in Ray tracing mode, its incredible looking, it has a 60fps at 1080p but I turned that on for boss battles then straight back to RTX, glad you liked it, one of the funniest most charming games I've ever played, I hope it made money because I really want a sequel, blessings from Dublin brother 🇮🇪

I'm surprised Fantasian didn't make the cut. I'm sure it flew under a lot of people's radar for being an Apple Arcade exclusive. If you're looking to play a more traditional turn-based JRPG from most of the original talent behind the Final Fantasy series, than I would highly recommend it!
