@Erick Mano dos games in my opinion sbr2 is my favorite sonic fan game ever ofc everyone has there own favorite sonic games and that’s ok but mine has to be sbr2 I just love this game man
Encore seems like a more polished version of gt considering I also had the same problem with stages being too open. Also I know this isn't a sonic fan game but it's inspired of sonic. Spark the electric jester 1 & 2 are games inspired from the adventure games and 3 being inspired off heroes (currently in development). The games are really good and I highly recommend you check it out. Also Omens deserves an honorable mention, I know it's kind of buggy and certain walks a thin line legally but I would be lying if I didn't say the game has so much passion with decent level design and great music. This was a pretty good list and I agree with all the choices being great fangames.
encore isn't finished though, i could only find a demo of it. Gt is a full game instead, but yeah it has the stage issue, and also the graphics are hard to mantain at a certain speed.
i think another thing thats perfect about SRB2 is that it has a mobile port with mod support, which is EXTREMELY helpful since i dont have anything that runs windows
Sonic P-06 is not even a remaster for me, it completely changes the physics and the graphics and it uses another engine for... everything unlike Colors Ultimate which used Godot only as a graphical and model backend. Sonic Omens was the only Sonic game to have fully 3D animated cutscenes and man they're BEAUTIFUL. The game itself isn't that great but whoever made the cutscenes is awesome. Sonic Robo Blast 2 is just... Sonic Robo Blast 2, it's good but i actually prefer Sonic GT over it. I just don't really like the formula they adopt into the game, but the game makes up for it offering you MASSIVE levels sometimes with the best challenge ever in a Sonic fangame, not feeling too unfair, and also it has awesome mods. Sonic After the Sequel is not really my thing but it is pretty good as a game. The game has really good level design that literally feels like a level from a classic sonic game and each level has fun gimmick like that kirby gimmick thing but i prefer another classic fangame which is Sonic Time Twisted. Sonic Time Twisted is, in my opinion, WAY better than Sonic After the Sequel because it has an interesting visual story, nice gimmicks and variety between the locations, a Sonic CD vibe but with actual good level design, it's really fun and challenging Metal Sonic Boss fights, and the artstyle and the sprites are MUCH better, and it's also in full HD/4K and widescreen so that's good. Ok that's about it really for my opinions on certain Sonic fan games. At the end of the day, Sonic fangames are just small passion projects and when we get talented people making phenomenal experiences with great graphics, good-feeling gameplay, and something that the official games don't have compared to these phenomenal fan creations and we can ALWAYS look at fangames when we get varying or no qualities from the official games made by Sonic Team and we can all appreciate that.
@@yoyooo2008 Same! I don't know how to make a game yet but I would love to make my own 3D Sonic fan games and maybe some Sonic inspired indie games in the future! Anyway, good luck to both of us!
I'm so glad that SRB2 (and by extension SRB2 Kart) made it to the number one spot! If you revisit this topic later on, I have zero doubt that the upcoming sequel to SRB2 Kart, Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers will be somewhere near the top of your list! Great video as always!
I’m glad to see someone put SRB2 on their #1 list. I was only 8 years old when I first played it (SRB2) when Final Demo 1.09.4 was still the latest version, the mod support was crazy back then & it’s getting better & better even now. It’s just so damn good! To think that these guys have been developing this game since 1998, 2 years before I was even born, is CRAZY. It’s safe to say that this game is most likely far from being finished for *good* but when that day comes I’m gonna be super excited.
Omens is great but I got just 1 problem with it. The fact that you have boost in adventure style levels. I mean there is 1 level which is just platforming (The tree climbing one) and the next one is just Boost. This game can be The best if it removes Boost and gives Sonic new moveset like in adventure games.
@@oliverafton1444 i dont mean boost is bad but if you use adventure style levels with it than it wont work. There is a reason that boost has 2d because of platforming sections
I've downloaded half of the fan games on your Top 10 list, and I gotta say, all of them are a lot of fun :) The half of the games I got were Robo Blast 2, P-06, GT, Rush 3D, and Sonic 3 A.I.R. I have yet to try Before and After the Sequel, and they honestly look really fun to play. Can't wait for more Top 10's on your channel! :D
So happy to see SRB2 at number one. SRB2 and Kart are not just some of my favorite fangames, but favorite video games of all time. I've sunk so many hours into multiplayer on them with my friends, and also love experimenting with the overload of mods on both of them. I think both of these games are very special and probably the best free games you can find on the internet!
Would personally put GT and Encore WAY higher, at least top 5, and Momentum really should have been included here, but aside from that, great list, and these are all great fangames!
i feel like the issue with open level designs vs linear level designs can be remedied fairly easily. just have open zone areas like in SA1 or Frontiers (though i know frontiers wasn't out by the time this video was posted) hell even just having a playground area to mess around with all the physics would be enough personally speaking, i just love messing with 3d sonic momentum, utopia would be my jam if there were more things to do in it
I knew most of these games and yeah they're great! ESPECIALLY SRB2 IT'S SO GOOD GO PLAY IT IF YOU HAVEN'T! I played the old 2.1 version and 2.2 blew me away, it also is how I became friends with a lot of people this year so I am forever grateful it's honestly my 2nd favorite Sonic Game and 3rd favorite game of all time.
Sonic chrono Adventure is hella underrated, though. But I totally agree with your list. Sonic Robo blast 2 is indeed fantastic, and it's all thanks to his mods accessibility. And also thanks to the online.
SRB2, 3 AIR, and P-06 are the GOATs! And GT is also fantastic! Can’t wait for Triple Trouble 16-Bit and these other projects to finish! Don’t forget the Sonic Chaos remake as well! Man, there’s so many good fan games! I also have to recommend the Sonic 1/2/CD decompilations. It’s like 3 AIR, but actually ports the mobile versions of these games to PC. They’re so good!
the mobile decompilations are literally the best versions of the games and they're completely free. And yes, they do work even if the mobile versions have ads. I tried that myself.
My top 10 favorite Sonic fan games include (in no particular order) : Project 06 Sonic 2 HD Sonic 3 AIR Sonic Robo Blast 2 Sonic GT Sonic Rush 3D Sonic Omens Sonic Before the Sequel Sonic After the Sequel Sonic Galactic
@@axelwoni.m.8940 So you actually like sonic omens unlike this f***ing fanbase that fan game just like thay hate an official game I can't understand why? This is an epic fan game
I've only tried Robo Blast 2 so far, but I appreciate the vid! Always up for some high quality fan games. Really hope Sonic Rush 3D gets finished too. I've seen gameplay of it and it looks like it could easily be one of the best sonic fan games if completed.
There are so many great Sonic fan games out there! I agree with your list but I would also like to add Sonic Time Twisted, Sonic Utopia and Sonic world. Those were pretty fun as well!
Sonic GT and Encore control almost exactly the same and have the same moves and physics. I would recommend Sonic GT slightly above Sonic Encore what with it being actually finished and having a story and original music.
There are a lot of amazing Sonic fan games on this list that Garrulous64 (take for instance) forgot to put on this list (while thankfully remembering SRB2 and Sonic 3 AIR, take for a couple examples), it’s just too bad there is an overlooked portion of the infamous Aonic fanbase (and not even the healthy portion of it) who think if we prefer fan games over official games by SEGA since the mid-late 2000s (and I know you’re the guy who made a video on why you actually like the so-called “Meta Era” that was the last decade, but honestly, I mostly like the 2010s not because of most of its games, especially Sonic 4, episode 1 in particular, and Sonic Forces beyond the character assassination of Tails, but because of the comics and shows of that time).
What I experienced was absolutely amazing. I downloaded every single one of them, and my god- I can see why you love these games. I would interchange your #2 and #1 spot over and over again, because I can't decide which one I like more, but I was so eager to start both of them, because not only I get to finish what I started with (technically) '06 when I was five, and the visuals of Robo Blast 2 is just- mwah, chef's kiss. Thank you so much for introducing me to these games, I love em, and kudos to the creators for putting time and effort into this for us to enjoy it. :D
Another really good fangame is Sonic and the Fallen Star that game has amazing visuals and level design creative ideas an amazing art style and controls too much like the classic games It is a really good game
06:45 "They made the level design linear, which is what I've been asking for from Sonic fangames for so long. It's linear, so now you're able to appreciate the setpieces and cinematic feel sonic is known for" No. Sonic as a franchise is defined by its replayability and the openness of its level design and how its physics (when implemented right) allows you to create your own playstyle. It is a franchise that incentivizes you to create your own fun, and use the level's slopes and obstacles and a sandbox/ playground of sorts. You can pic up Sonic Mania right now, and play through Mirage Saloon Act 2 in a bajillion different ways. Linearity and focus on "cinematic feel" and rigid set pieces was a novelty introduced by Unleashed, which should have evolved into something freer, but unfortunately didn't (as Forces demonstrated) and overstayed its welcome.
it genuinely bewilders me how much people care about in-level cinematic moments. im not trying to say its a bad thing, i guess im just realizing more more speedrunner-brained than i thought lol i just want good game feel and full control over the camera, i feel like "cool moments" come from learning what you can pull off, rather than locking the camera to certain positions and taking away some player agency. i think taking away control outside of cutscenes is pretty uncool personally speaking lol
I agree with a lot of these and I do agree on gt being to open. I was wondering have you heard of sonic deep space or the copious amount of other sonic rush style fan games or sonic all stars? Just wondering since they don’t get talked about a lot and I’ve watched some videos of them (I don’t have a pc so I can’t say much for how well the gameplay feels).
i would put GT highter in the list and also put Sonic Chrono Adventure, and maybe the Sonic SMS Remakes Also have you played After the Sequel Omega? Is a remaster with widescreen, bug fixes, and harder bosses
2:32 is also the main reason why I did not like Sonic Frontiers, open level design that's easy to get lost in. I like my 3D Sonic games "linear" like Unleashed, Colours, Generations, even Forces, but still lots do to like in 6:48.
I agree with every game on this list, except Robo Blast 2. I just didn't like it because the physics feel super floaty and everything is too flat/blocky
Sonic Rush 3D has ass keyboard controls but aside from that it's decent. Textures could be better. Not in how they're low poly, but in how large and stretched they are.
Yeah if i'd count fangames on my list of best sonic game Sonic P-06 would EASILY be the second best. Nobody can beat my GOAT that is Sonic Adventure though. No game. Even not-sonic.
You are probably thinking of SRB1. SRB2 was in 2D at one point but it was extrmely early on in the game's lifespan, the game has been 3d since around 2000 i think.
Triple Trouble 16 Bit came out not too long after this video and uh… yeah, *this ain’t it chief.* Easy number 2 for me, it’s literally the Sonic CD of Sonic 3. (As in CD is a more direct sequel to 1 than 2 is) I wouldn’t be surprised if Sonic Galactic would come pretty close as well, but Triple Trouble 16 Bit is the most “official” feeling of the Sonic games. (Not that SRB2 and SRB2Kart couldn’t be official either, but come on, they’re *too* perfect, it’s an unrealistic expectation for SEGA by themselves to achieve since they’ve been around for *decades)* Oh yeah, and Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic CD Restored, and Sonic 2 Forever. Those would’ve easily been placed on this list around Sonic 3 A.I.R. for me as well. Sonic 3 A.I.R. isn’t slacking either, modders are ramping it up with extra character slot projects since those other 3 games are also doing it. It’s only a matter of time that Triple Trouble also gets the same treatment. *God bless the classic styled community…*
There are a lot of amazing Sonic fan games on this list that Garrulous64 forgot to put on this list (while thankfully remembering SRB2 and Sonic 3 AIR), it’s just too bad there’s a crowd of people who think if we prefer fan games over official games by SEGA since the mid-late 2000s (and I know you’re the guy who made a video on why you actually like the so-called “Meta Era” that was the last decade, but honestly, I mostly like the 2010s not because of most of its games, especially Sonic 4, episode 1 in particular, and Sonic Forces beyond the character assassination of Tails, but because of the comics and shows of that time).
Imo, srb2 isn't that fun. The mods make it kinda better but the overall game really isn't that much fun to play with. The maps are so big but it isn't clear on where to get to. Compared to something like Sonic GT,you know where to go most of the time.
My personal favorite Sonic fan games are (in no particular order): Sonic Green Hill Paradise Sonic Smack Down Sonic Utopia Sonic 2 HD Thing is I like the open world Sonic fan games. Sonic Smack Down is practically an original game with official quality. And finally, Sonic 2 was my very first owned video game, so how could I not like a very polished recreation of my childhood (even if its only the first zone, lol).
i remember playing a game like srb2 when i was very young but i dont remember the character like that but the maps are identical af im gonna download it cause i want to see if it trully is that cause ive been searching for it for years
My 3 favouraite sonic fangames are sonic robo blast 2 (2.5 years so far) , sonic and the fallen star (1 year so far) and sonic vs darkness (half a year so far) so far but that might change bc i watched this video.
