Absolutely. I think people overthink it to the point they try to get something "too cool" and it ends up being a very situational game when they could just pick out something they think looks fun that they would play and everyone is going to have a great time even if it isn't an a-tier game. I've had so much fun playing gifted games with the people that gifted it to me, plus there's a level of satisfaction you can see in someone's eyes when they see you enjoyed the thing they got you.
Tip 1 is too true. I always like the high tier games but I find myself playing the less acclaimed games more because they are easier to get to the table.
Been watching a lot of these board game videos, but you're the one I've subbed to. I like your way of describing the games. Got a few ideas to look up from just this video. Thanks mate
Nice to see light/medium weight games getting some love. I especially like the shout out to Survive which is always a good time and fast enough to start a game night while waiting for stragglers to show up.
Completely agree! I think Survive is one of my favorite filler / warm up games to also gauge the groups comfort level with a little more aggressive games too. I also like Samurai for the same purpose
Great suggestions! Scout is a fantastic game that I think you can table with just about any gaming group. Totally accessible but does require some strategy.
Yea for sure! Another good tip that I forgot to include is buying a gift card to a local game shop. I’m always thrilled when someone does that for me and then I get to tell them all about the game I buy with it
@@CardboardHunter Oh yeah great tip as well!! all though when I go to a game shop I am lost in there for the next three hours because there is always just so much to see. Even when I know what I am going to buy I'll just spent half my day there because I get distracted with evrery other game I see that has nice art work lol
For the price I think everyone should have it in their collection. It's so light and funny. It kinda scratches the same itch as Cosmic Encounter, if you've played that one. Only even lighter.
lol yeeeaaaa I’m not mentioning any names but soooo much of the board game content creator community has just become the advertising mouthpieces for the bigger companies and it just ruins it for me. I’m really just trying to make the content I wished was more common on RU-vid
Scout is fun because: 1. It's easy to learn and teach. Players from all age groups can play it, and there's no brain drain. No one has to spend more than 5 seconds to decide, and play a turn. 2. There's still some skill required to play it well. When do you save up your big run, and end the round, and when do you play smaller runs to keep getting points? 3. Scout makes tracking points as easy as possible. You don't need pen and paper. The point tokens are genius. 4. The box is so small, but 2 to 5 players can have fun for 20 minutes, with something you can fit into a pocket, glove box, purse.
I was the same way at first to be honest. When I first saw it around and how much people were recommending it I thought the whole community lost their mind lol. I finally was at a game shop and we were having each person take a chance picking the next game and finally Scout came up and I was less than thrilled to say the least. I found it a bit clunky to learn that first time (this was mostly due to my own desire not to learn it and the player teaching it not being the best teacher) but the first round I really thought my first take on the game was right but somewhere in the second round the game finally clicked for me and I found the pot of gold at the end of that rainbow. When I saw the depth of strategy and how much could change between your turns, oh man, I feel in love with it. It's certainly not for everyone, so don't force it or beat yourself up if it's just not for you, but if you get a chance to give it one more try, I would recommend it.
@@darbyl3872 Completely agree. The point tracking system may very well be my favorite point tracking system I've ever seen. The negative numbers on the back side are just *chefs kiss*. The way that the worst starting hand against the best starting hand still has a ton of opportunity to take the win is so satisfying too. Sometimes a good starting hand is bad because you have so many options it gets hard to decide when to play which trick.
That one was soooo close to making my list but several other content creators recommended it this year so I thought I’d keep my list a bit more left field lol
Got the CoB Kickstarter and when it arrived I sadly realized I was not really ever going to get it tabled. Settled with just playing it on BGA and sold it. Disappointed but glad I was realistic with myself instead of just letting it sit on my shelf forever
I’ve been wanting Ra for ages and couldn’t get it at my local game stores, but saw it on a website, going to have to wait until my next pay check to get it, or get my wife to get it for me for Xmas…. Great video
I definitely recommend the Pharaoh Edition of Ra, the component quality (all wood and metal) is exceptional. Happy to see Star Wars deck building game in here too, I had a blast playing that recently at a board game cafe! Also feeling the CoB:Deluxe non-backer regret!
I am giving away a sealed copy right now so maybe you'll get bus too! Lol. I love the game so much, I really can't recommend it enough. Huuuuge fan of your channel btw!
@@BadatBoardgamesYou just have to subscribe to my page and then each video of mine you leave a comment on = 1 entry into the contents (1 entry per video basically)
I've been putting off buying spirit island because I have a bunch of other heavier games, but yeah I know it'll probably be one of my faves. Also was on the fence about Scout, but I think you have convinced me. Thanks for the video 👍
Glad I could help! Scout is so good, I just taught it to some new friends last night and they all loved it! Spirit Island is an absolutely brilliant game if you like cooperative, but I have to stress that if you don't like that style of game, it's going to fall short. For me, I fully recognize how good it is and why people love it, but I don't like cooperative games and every time I've ever played Spirit Island I've just wanted to leave sooo badly haha
That’s a great question! I’ve been thinking of doing something similar to that idea, a top 10 board game accessories video, which would aim at items that will compliment your board games the most. Spoiler being Iron Clays deff makes the list lol
