How is Magic: The Gathering a fad when it started in 1993 and it is just as popular now as it has ever been? I think it might even be getting a movie.

Sports cards and PEZ dispenser collecting are not "fads". Both have had many, many collectors for decades and continue to spawn new collectors. "Fad" is defined as short-lived or temporary.

Honestly, I don't think you people understand the concept of a "fad". Magic and Pokemon being on this list is a travesty.

Missed a few: Bakugon (anybody who went to middle school from 2008-2010) I knew kids with cardboard boxes filled to the brim with little plastic spheres... And more recently, fidget spinners (The engineering lab where I work teaches people how to use the 3-D printer by having hem make fidget spinners with it)

This list reminded me of how much I wanted "things" as a kid and as an adult how much I really didn't "need" them at all makes me thankful for what I have.

Beyblades, Yugioh, and just near the end of my being interested in that kind of thing B-daman were what dominated my childhood. I remember mixing and matching parts of both B-daman and Beyblades to make the coolest one I could, I still have my favorite B-daman from when I was a kid sitting by my bed as a reminder of that time. I got in many a fight with friends about suspected theft, both as the perpetrator and the victim. But what I really have fond memories of is Yugioh (again, I still have some cards beside my bed, I haven't touched them since I put them there mind you), and the biggest fights, a friend of mine was convinced I stole his blue eyes white dragon (I didn't, it was a mutual friend, I did take his Man-Spider toy though, I still feel bad about that, I don't think I even used it after I took it) which led to one of the most drawn out feuds of my childhood. But it was also responsible for the most fun of the three, I still remember dueling my older sister, she's eleven years older than me and hard to get along with, those are the best memories I have of her from that time.

Collecting is very rewarding. When I used to travel a lot I always kept the change (banknotes) and placed them in albums, but now that I can't travel I started purchasing worldwide banknotes from a dealer and that way I can get better quality, scarcer banknotes. It's fun.

As a retail worker when they first came out I can say without a doubt that SKYLANDERS should be on this list. The amount of parents tearing displays apart looking for "Special rare limited edition" figures was ridiculous. Every time a new one came out they HAD to buy it.

I was not too much into collecting fad as a kid. As an adult I collected a few items in my various hobbies. One was Disney's , in a small way. Second was radio control wood kits, my collection is worth about $12,000. My number one is my pinball machine bank of 14 machines. Mostly purchased between 1992 to 2004 for about a $7,000 investment they are worth about $70,000.

Interesting to note that none of the items on the list came into existence after the year 2000 (except Silly Bandz which only received an honorable mention). It makes you wonder if technology hasn't deprived us of the joy of collecting.

I agree with most of this list. Everything except the Magic: The Gathering entry. Even after watching the video, I'm still not sure how you classified things as 'fads.' Magic is still going strong to this day, and seems to become a more serious market with each year, with three sets released each year and countless tournaments (several with big cash rewards for the winners) all over the place. Given that it launched in 1993 and is still around, that's a pretty long fad. (Please note: I care for the game myself, but being involved with gaming for about 15 years now I'm quite acquainted with it.)

I still collect Pokémon Cards, and watch all the episodes. And play some Pokémon games too.

Now it's all about collecting virtual stuff like csgo knives.

Collectibles and cards are major industries. I just sold one lot of Magic the Gathering cards within the past two weeks for a quick lump sum of $60,000. Which was about 60% of retail value, but was a quick transaction. Nostalgia is a valuable asset

I see several comments regarding Yugio and comic books but they really do not fit the definition of "fad". WatchMojo didn't do themselves any favors by including Sports cards and Magic cards to the list. Both of these are still produced and collected today and Sports cards were popular well before my father was born.

Baseball cards do not qualify as a "fad" since folks have been collecting them for 151 years now (1869-2020).

Silly bands were my favorite fad when I was in elementary school. Everywhere you look you see a kid wearing one.

Seriously though anyone who knows anything about chess and magic should be able to see that chess takes FAR FAR FAR more skill and effort. Chess is one of the oldest games on the planet, an ageless test of skill, talent, and experience. Whereas magic is a fun card game designed to make money. To even compare the games is an insult to chess.

My collection fads are all almost Disney-related, which are Vinylmations, pins, Tsum Tsums, Funko Pop figures and Mystery Minis, Itty Bittys, pressed pennies, and capsule toys (both from the US and Japan). I'm also currently collecting Animal Crossing Amiibo cards.

Magic shouldn't be on the list since it's not a fad, as you mentioned in the beginning it's only things that were collectible for a short period of time. There are more Magic players today than ever before so it's still going on. I'm glad to see it on the list but I wasn't expecting it to be since it's not a fad.

MTG being labelled a fad when it's been gaining in popularity for 20+ years shows how sloppy WatchMojo constructs their lists...

To all you saying YGO should be on this list. A fad is a product or idea that passes over a bit of time. YGO is still strong, it's collected, and played today.

I'm currently missing four Pokémon until I have card copies of all 809. I'm missing Mantyke, Stakataka, Blacephalon, and Melmetal. I also have THE Charizard card.

hahaha I'm 26 and last year I started to collect Pokemon Cards again after an inpuls purchase at a convention. Now I finaly have the first series complete and I keep collecting the rest.

The older Littlest Pet Shop toys were super popular back in the earlyish 2000's and a LOT of people had them, even boys! There's still collectors today, one of the most famous collectors today is LPShannah!

My sister had a green troll doll a long time ago, now her son loves Yu-Gi-Oh and has his parents buy that and Dragon Ball Z items all the time.

My aunt made homemade Cabbage Patch dolls for me and a friend for Christmas 1983. If it wasn't for the cloth "skin" she used instead of hard plastic, you wouldn't have been able to tell which ones were hers and which were the store bought ones.

Maybe this was only popular in my neck of the woods during my youth, but some of the fads I went through were click-clacks, wearing hard plastic pacifiers as a necklace, bubblegum that came in a plastic beeper case, and Batman medallions which were popular shortly after the first Tim Burton Batman film.

Never knew a single kid back in school that knew how to play that damn pokemon game...yet we all still collected them cards like lunatics.
