In Magic the Gathering a card that affects the outcome of the combat step is commonly referred to as a “combat trick.” These combat tricks have existed since Giant Growth in Alpha, an instant speed way of increasing your creature’s power and toughness so it now beats the creature blocking it in combat. Generally speaking combat tricks are not hard removal and instead help shift the outcome of combat, most frequently by buffing your own creature to come out on top in the exchange. While most combat tricks tend to see play in limited given their lower power level compared to hard removal, some combat tricks have managed to be impactful and important cards in competitive formats, which is what we'll be looking at today.
