He told me that he was a home reserve for the hungarian ping pong team in Barcelona 1992. He had an el-guitar mod 60's. Hell he could play the guitar. He was a funny guy too. I asked why he invited me exactly to party with him. He said you are from the same district as my wife. Moonshine is part of your culture. I knew you could drink moonshine, he said. Which is true.

Australia has done well and all this graph shows is the Transatlantic locations until well into the era of cheap modern travel. Our athletes were self-funded and amateurs, so had to work like everyone else to save for a fare. Since the era of state sponsored professional athletes we have risen to the top ten, and have been to every summer games, one of only four countries to do so. Our first two gold in 1896 were won by Edwin Flack, a gent on holiday in the UK who heard about the Games and entered!!! In 1912 the first two women Fanny Durack and Mina Wylie to win gold and silver in swimming were both Australian.

Im not american.. but it has to be said... the US is the best at most worldly things because of their diversity. And I don't mean just race... I mean, their innovations, way of thinking... that is to say their outside of the box thinking and their evolution/migration from Europe to Americas gave their genes a big boost. E.g. in the UK they love to have constant meetings without any end result and there is always this pyramid of hierarchy to follow which can slow things down and cut off innovation, but in the US they just want to get things done and get the best ideas regardless who it comes from. In Asia, there is a lot of emphasis on respect/honor and doing things the right way based on traditions or culture. Out of all nations until mid 2010s... US has been ahead on most things... but Now... it seems like the US has completely lost the ball and the world is up for grabs once more again

@st0ox
@st0ox 2 года назад
@Jackson Spieth the UK had a very advantageous position with the special US relationship it brought to the EU and also with its position in the common wealth. The UK was always able to gain influence through this triangle, because they could always tell the EU, we can talk with the US or a country from the common wealth and vice versa. Now this triangle became a line with much less area so to speak. And don't get me wrong, hard power is nice, but since the nuclear age I am not sure how much conflicts will really be resolved with hard power in the future. As a German I am very sad the Britain left the EU, because in my point of view we were stronger together against some much bigger counties like China.

Invalid since rules artificially cap how many athletes nations can send, plus there's a finite number of events. It'd be as meaningless as tracking goals per capita in a game and concluding Brazilians suck at soccer because they only beat Honduras 4-1 instead of 40-1. It's still 11 v 11 on the field and there's a time limit. Per capita comparisons are for open ended stats like GDP, not constrained ones.
@anathielvanrycanter7696
@anathielvanrycanter7696 2 года назад
@@krl97a calculating medals per capita might be in favour of the smaller countries, true, but simply counting them definitely favours the big ones. Besides it's relatively rare that one nation claims multiple medals in a single event, so sending more athletes wouldn't necessarily mean a significant increase in medals won.
@krl97a
@krl97a 2 года назад
@@anathielvanrycanter7696 The difference is that medal tables are counting something tangible. "Fair" or not, those medals really exist and represent events that really happened. By contrast per capita comparisons are artificial constructs that ignore Olympic rules and nature, and have no connection to reality. They're fallacious and meaningless. And yes the cap on athletes each nation can send will logically impact medals. We can see the likely empirical impact with split German teams going from a combined 142 medals in 1988 to 82 with a unified team in 1992. That may be as close to a controlled experiment as we can get. Most events don't have a slam dunk favorite and even ones that do sometimes don't turn out as expected, like McKayla Maroney on the vault in 2012 or the Australian relay team last night. The Tunisian guy who barely qualified for the final but won gold a few days ago may be an extreme example, but non-favorites winning medals is very common. Simply being at the Olympics is a big part of having a chance. That's why rules capping nations' team size exist, or else large nations that are also athletic power houses culturally and societally like the US would be even more dominant. If each US state was allowed to field its own team then America's medals would skyrocket, like Germanys but even more so.
@anathielvanrycanter7696
@anathielvanrycanter7696 2 года назад
@@krl97a I merely suggested that a per capita chart might be interesting and to that I keep. Since there are like factors of 30 or even more between the populations of some of the mentioned countries, and it seems unlikely that capping the number of athletes sent can make up for a difference that big. And about unified Germany: East Germany was a socialist country with a state-driven sport powerhouse, a system which changed to match the western standards: this might as well contribute to the decline in the total medal count of Germany.

Good question. Unlike GDP, where figures are tallied yearly, the Olympic medals a nation receives doesn’t disappear when it collapses. This is why the bar for the Soviet Union and East Germany stays even after their end in 1991 and 1990 respectively.

@Icetea-2000 Год назад
Total medals are less relevant than the quality if medals. Also it doesn’t combine certain countries that are definitely containing the exact same people after a change as before, notably Germany, which should have west and east german medals combined. Same with Russia, yes, the soviet union did have athletes outside russian borders, then you could just count them to those modern countries instead and leave the soviet russians as russians (even though they did participate under the same flag but it gets difficult otherwise) You definitely can’t just exclude all east german and soviet olympic achievements from the rest of russia and germany, that’s unfair when countries like the US are counted unchanged since 1896 Thus, this list is a failure to me

There is a restriction in athletes per country in many sports that disadvantages the US. I guarantee that if the 50 US states were separate countries in the Olympics, they would win way more overall medal combined than they do as the US because of this. Not to mention that there is a limited amount of events which makes it impossible for a nation like the US to win per capita. And in say soccer, Uruguay or Netherlands are probably the best per capita but Brazil is considered the best all time because they win the most. The US is the most successful sports nation in the world (in terms of Olympic, world championship and major results), and is all time (most top players, most successful in olympics, major or world championship in the sport all time) the best in baseball, basketball, track and field, swimming, lacrosse, beach volleyball, figure skating, tennis, golf, boxing, diving, shooting, rowing, snowboarding etc and is all time top 5 in ice hockey, wrestling, gymnastics, volleyball, speed skating, alpine skiing, bobsleigh, equestrian, sailing, cycling, weightlifting, archery etc. No nation comes remotely close to the US in overall sporting achievements

@@AW-zk5qb Your stats don't add up! Yes the USA does very well, but only due to its 338 million population compared to other highly developed nations. You said that if every state in the US were separate countries they would win way more overall medals combined, yes they would but so would other highly developed countries that have equally sophisticated infrastructures if they were broken up. If Britain's population of 68 million was broken down into say 4 regions competing individually (17 million) it would be exactly the same scenario and probably still out preform the USA over all on medals per head of population and Britain's hypothetical 4 teams would still out perform most of the 50 states based on past performance also, maybe with the exception of California which has well over half of Britain's entire population . Population USA 337 million - Population UK 68 million 20% the population of USA. All time medals: USA 1,061 Gold total medals 2,629 Team GB 284 Gold total medals 916 Then you look at Australia and New Zealand, they have done better still.
