If it wasn't bad enough that they were insulting and offending the French, they also stereotyped the sole Ukrainian character as a petty thief.

Costumer is not always right, but the costumer _should_ always be respectfully spoken to and you can respectfully tell them to go as well. Screaming to a costumer is not acceptable, unless they set the whole place on fire.
@snowangelnc
@snowangelnc Год назад
@@Widdekuu91 The original was "In matters of taste, the customer is always right," which makes a lot more sense than the misquote version we hear all the time now. Funny thing is, in this case Emily actually used it correctly. As long as she's asking politely, if she happens to like her steak well done then let her have it well done. Sure, the chef might like it better cooked medium, but different people have different tastes. And yes, before anyone tells me that's not how it works in French culture, I know that. It doesn't apply everywhere, I'm just explaining the intention behind the statement because a lot of people here where it's meant to apply have taken it to mean they have carte blanche to steamroll over anybody and everybody in the service industry. That was never the intention.
@Widdekuu91
@Widdekuu91 Год назад
@@snowangelnc I agree with you. And even when someone isn't politely asking, I'd argue there is still a difference between a bully (trying to push the boundaries and derogatively behave to the staff because they think they have that power) and someone that is making a scene because they are super-stressed and on the verge of tears and doesn't know what to do anymore, other than scream and cry about their mother's burned croutons. The kind of people that feel like burned croutons will 'ruin the entire evening.' I never worked in horeca/restaurants/food-industry but I did work in retail and we regularly had a lady walking in, redhot-anger on her face and trembling with frustration, because her newly bought handbag was falling apart already or because her hat was not washingmachine-proof like the label promised. (To be fair, we were selling shit and polishing turds all day, the costumers were being lied to and robbed of their hard-earned money by the company earning billions a year with this scammy shit.) She'd start with; 'I travelled half an hour by train, to visit this store again, because I don't live near another V&D and I ASKED THE LADY IN ADVANCE IF THE LABEL WAS CORRECT AND SHE SAID IT WAS AND LOOK AT MY HAT AND IT WAS THE LAST ONE IN MY SIZE-" etc. And whereas my colleagues would usually dismiss the costumer or tell them to file a complaint online (even blatantly telling them to fuckoff if they didn't listen, because they were busy filling shelves or took the screaming very personally), I would drop everything out of my hands, and tell her; 'I can see your frustration, lady, and I can imagine how frustrating it must be to travel áll the way back on your day off, only to come over here and complain about the faulty labelling. I can indeed see on the label that is says washingmachine-proof, but that clearly isn't the case. You're absolutely right. We should take them off the shelves. Now, I can see -if- how I can get you a refund and whether we have your size left, back in stockroom, incase you want a new one in return, that you then have to obviously wash by hand. Let me know what your preferred solution is. And let me walk you to the cashierlady that is better at these things than me.' And then I would walk with her, which took only a minute extra, but instead of adding to the anger (sending her away) I walked with her and that resulted in a better mood. Within that minute, the screaming, upset and trembling costumer would often start stammering an apology for their outburst, after which they often mention; 'Youknow, my sister recently died and my daughter is having moneyproblems and I am unable to help and this was just the last drop, I got worked up on my way here in the train and it was such a beautiful day and I actually wanted to go to the forest but I had to do this instead." And I'd advise them to visit the forest anyway, the one that was nearby and they'd wave goodbye and thank me and the costumer was happy(ier.) And my collegues would call me insane and tell me to 'get rid of the freak' next time, instead of helping her, because there were shelves to be filled.

Have you seen San Andreas? An American girl walks into the room and two British boys practically faint and ask for her number right away, because she is 'so s-so beautiful...' And she just hands them her number like she's a rockstar and is getting this treatment all the time. Same thing in Lizzy Mcquire the movie (in rome) and Despicable me 4. And Madagaskar 3 (or 4?) and Taken, though that one isn't really simping and more like pimping. But you know what I mean. As an Indian who worked from India for the Americans as a technical support agent during her struggling years, i want to say this show has given me such satisfaction in watching the French kinda bullying Emily and mocking the ideology that Americans think they are the center of the world and that the customer is always right . The one where Sylvie bashes Madelline and asks her to leave the marketing to the French because they are afraid of their culture being twisted was the best part . A lot of sadistic pleasure in the entire series ... seemed like netflix decided to take revenge on my behalf .

I'll be honest, while the show is dumb, her argument about her basicness was kind of a fair point. Especially in this day and age, high fashion brands wouldn't be as well loved if the masses who can't afford it didn't give a shit. Which I know a lot of people don't but if it was just the people who could afford it AND were interested in it who cared, they'd have a pretty small following. But to give the show a genuine criticism, I don't think half of it would be so bad if it wasn't so proud of itself and made out dumb shit like "berry hungry" was so clever. Like it's the kind of thing if I scrolled past it on Instagram I'd think "cute" and move on. It's made cringe because it's supposed to come off as clever which like... no?

“Emily in Paris” goes on and on in presenting stereotypes about an American landing in Europe, not to mention that is unrealistic. You might not speak the local language to work in multinationals - particularly in the field of technology - but I don’t see that happening very often in marketing and communication. Among everything, that’s really ridiculous how French class is carried out, that is, her paring up with a Brit: the best way not to practice a foreign language is indeed working with someone with your same mother tongue! At least the second series is better-conceived than the first one, for instance the character of Philippine Leroy is much better developed.
@emilytalerman3567

How would she be paired with a native speaker everyone in the class is learning French🤔
@floraflowers
@floraflowers Год назад
@@emilytalerman3567 If you are an immigrant and you're taking classes to learn the language of the country you moved to, chances are that you're going to have at least one classmate from your home country. A lot of language courses put emphasis on teamwork mostly because a lot of exercises are actually roleplay conversations (e.g. a shop owner with a customer, a job interview situation) so that you get used to using the language in a setting where you don't have much time to think so you have to improvise. So for such tasks, teachers often prefer to avoid pairing two speakers of the same language. For example if it's a Spanish course and you put a German and a Korean together, they'll be forced to discuss their task in Spanish. But if you pair two Danes, they'll end up discussing the task in their native Danish because it's easier. I took German classes when I moved to Germany and I had a lot of Chinese classmates. All of our teachers avoided pairing them together or tried pairing them with a third person who *wasn't* Chinese so they'd *have* to speak in German so as to not exclude the third person out of the conversation. Otherwise they would have just spoken in Chinese and so they would have never truly got to exercise their German.

Let me start by saying that I LOVE COMEDY! I have watched so many films and series in the comedy genre in various language, so it seems strange to me that Emily in Paris is supposed to be a comedy. I have I’ve heard that it is both a drama and a comedy series, but I can in no way see any comedy in the serie. I see no problem in making a series that presents stereotypes, as long as it is done in a comical way like Family Guy etc. But I can not find the comic genre in Emily in Paris at all. They are presenting these stereotypes so genuine, that it's like you get the impression that this is what Americans think Paris and Europe is like.

In Friends, they have a woman called Marga with a heavy Russian accent and she is supposed to be Dutch. Very silent, skinny blonde lady that looks a bit goth-y. Feels really uncomfortable when asked her opinion. And is basically just interested in Chandler and Joey and wants to silently watch them playing basketbal. I mean, the Dutch are known for quite rude jokes, blatantly giving your opinion and Marga is a name that sounds very oldfashioned and I do not know anyone dead or alive that is called Marga.

Well, it's a Netflix show that is intended to be light and somewhat entertaining, so I guess one cannot expect a show worthy of an Emmy or whatever recognition (even though I understand it got already nominated once ). I haven't seen it, but I wasn't aware that, in spite of its success so far, it has been receiving heavy criticism as well. I guess Lily is partially to blame because she took on the role and, from what I understand, has served as producer of the show as well. Happens sometimes, I guess.

I would never have believed that such a light comedy can upset so many people. This series is in no way to be taken seriously and I don't believe that the producers wanted to offend anyone. My perception of the show is that of a young good-spirited girl who makes her way through ignoring all the resistances. I find Lily Collins very charming in this role and the show is based on a somewhat "mild" culture clash. The is the premise. Otherwise there would not be an "Emily in Paris". The funny thing is that I actually can recall plenty situations that I or friends of mine made, which are not so far from what you call stereotyping (especially service wise). I think that every nation has its own way (in general spoken of course) which defines it. For example I find the French way more relaxed about sexuality as Americans. So the scene with Emily and the French girls in the Hammam is not so far from the truth (though that could also happen in Middle-European and Scandinavian countries).
@kmoney1007
@kmoney1007 2 года назад
it's a racist, xenophobic, and offensive display of Paris. The jokes fall flat often, and there is no real, consistent plot line for a majority of the show. Emily is a clumsy and careless friend who could also double as a villian in her friend's life.

I am Dutch so here are my thoughts, I found that the series is a collection of stereotypes. I did enjoy it still though. The French socialist employees who only start the day at 10:30, supposedly can’t get fired etc. The French all seem to smoke and have a nasty habit of calling you a Plouc… tres ringarde. The fashion designer in the picture is yet again male and gay, the CEO’s of Lavaux and Cadault beautiful playboys shall I gon on? The Londoner is of course an investment banker. And even though I love the clothes Emily wears I don’t find it very Parisian, it’s more Carrie. Not sure if the creators thought of Paris as one big Runway (wait until you get out at Gare du Nord and still think the same it’s not all glamour) 😂 now don’t call her a Karen that sexist. There are many Kens out there too. Btw is it that bad to see the Swan lake in the opera? I would love any opera there I guess, does that say something about me, how ringarde!
