I am shocked that Smoke on the Water didn't cut the list, not even an honourable mention. Not a diss on the other bands, but Deep Purple are better musicians that any others on this list, and while many of their songs aren't as remembered, Smoke on the Water and Highway Star definitely are. Smoke on the Water didn't just define the 70s, it defined guitar in general. It's the song everybody learns on the guitar. And Highway Star, while not as big as most of these songs, is definitely a sleeper hit and completely redefined what a guitar solo meant. Every solo, from Van Halen and any band that imitated them only existed because of Highway Star. Machine Head is one of the classic albums from the decade and it's honestly just sad to see Deep Purple snubbed from these kinds of lists all the time.

@raggeragnar
@raggeragnar 7 лет назад
It suddenly striktes me how diverse the 70's was , music-wise . Punkrock , disco , southern rock , new wave , pop , and a little hint of protest singer from the decade before. Kind of like a confused teenager who listens to everything. Good music though.

@Rorschachqp
@Rorschachqp 5 лет назад
Actually the 70s were the least diverse of the modern music age, 60s to present. The fact that they could do a top 10 to capture all of these songs shows how few exceptions there were to the normal rule. It wasn't until punk came along, destroyed all the rules, and ushered in the 80s that rock truly evolved. Punk came along at the very end of the 70s.
@lishlash3749
@lishlash3749 5 лет назад
Rorschachqp - Right, and the same goes for New Wave, the *80's* genre that was the death knell for disco. Heart of Glass in particular, which in no way belongs on this list.

I'd put Bohemian Rhapsody #1. Stayin' Alive deserves to be very high though because it's representing the whole SNF/disco era. I'm not as big a fan of Stairway as many seem to be. American Pie is one of the all time greats, but for some reason it has much more of a 60s feel and so doesn't seem to define the '70s at all. Rather than Rocket Man, I'd say Elton's song here should have been Philadelphia Freedom. I'm glad ABBA made it. They have such a huge collection of 70s hits and were dominant outside of the US.

The middle and most of the 70's was dominated by ABBA. After Eurovision '74 finished with Waterloo at Number One, there was quiet until their first hit Mama Mia was picked up and topped the charts in 1975 from about March. Over Christmas into 1976, the charts were dominated by Fernando by ABBA. Then the hits just rolled on. Queen was really an unrecognised concept until the late '70's. Nobody really understood them. Then they had a cultish following. Kiss were big in 1979. Usually, popularity hung on a good song from a good group and they might have had other hits to back them up. That usually gave them 12 months or so of notoriety. ABBA stood out as being as big, almost, as The Beatles, perhaps without the depth, creativity and adulation accorded The Beatles.. The Bee Gees were big with Disco. That revived their career. I think Boney M with their hits like Daddy Cool and Rasputin should have been given more accord. The epitaph to the decade, I think, was The Knack with My Sharona. There were a lot of other good groups around like The Police with their reggae sound. Split Enz started to rise with their big New Wave hit of the late '70's called 'I See Red', too. That would lead the chart-topping record classic called I Got You!

There was such a wide variety of music in the 70s that it would take 100 songs to define it. Painfully absent in the list is any of the fantastic R&B / funk bands of the time like Earth, Wind, and Fire, Parliament, Kool and the Gang, the O'jays, etc. The massive adult contemporary category like James Taylor, Paul Simon, Bill Joel, Gordon Lightfoot, Carly Simon, Al Green, Carole King, etc. Popular jazz/adult like George Benson, Gino Vannelli, Steely Dan. The fusion of Miles Davis, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock. Pop - America, Barry Manilow, Village People, The Hollies etc. Country music - Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Alabama, etc. If you list disco you have to include KC and the Sunshine Band, you couldn't go through a day without hearing them somewhere.Songs that wouldn't bother me if I never heard them again in my life because they were overplayed everywhere for decades, Freebird, Stairway To Heaven, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Songs that make me want to vomit because they are really that bad, Billy Don't Be A Hero by Paper Lace, Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks, Black Betty by Ram Jam (nauseatingly repetitious).

The Sex Pistols but no The Doors, Steve Millers, Eagles, Deep Purple, Billy Joel, Rush, Kansas, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd (who dominated the 70s, 80s, and early 90s) or the Doors??? Superstition at number 8??? ABBA I believe is actually 80s!!! How is Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody or Imagine not number one??? Especially over THE BEEGEES STAYING ALIVE!!!! WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT WITH FLEETWOOD MAC NOT BEING AS SUCCESSFUL AS SOME OF THESE??? Rumors is in the top 5 rock albums sold in the 1970s!!! I'm sorry, but you failed big time!!!
