In the book, joe kills beck by strangling her and shoving the pages of a book into her mouth so she couldn’t make any noise. He strangles her so hard that blood comes out of her throat and soaks the pages of the book

@@Shinigami344 exactly what I'm saying. ESPECIALLY after how season 2 ended. I literally want him dead. He's just a sick, self-righteous, misogynist tbh. For one, he becomes infatuated with them off of appearance alone. Then once he's infatuated and persues them, he literally forces them to fit into HIS fantasized version of them. He is never in love with them. Just the idea of them. And then if they have some trait he doesn't like, it's BOOM, I don't like them anymore. He is so entitled! And this just shows he doesn't really care about the actual human he's "in love with." So it annoys me that people think he's loving, caring, and all of that. Grace Kompany Yeah, the show definitely doesn’t portray Joe as misunderstood. It portrays him as what he is - delusional, narcissistic and nearly completely divorced from reality. It’s depressing how many fans of the show believe, that it’s the show’s writing, that makes him likeable or sympathetic, when the entire series is essentially a thesis statement on how people fail to realise, that people like Joe should never be romanticised.

Two reasons why people crush on Joe in the tv show: 1) Penn Badgley is hot. That excuses all kinds of things in today's society. 2) Joe on the tv show is a MUCH better person than Joe in the book. While he kills people in the show, he seems to show conflicted feelings about it, and he does it all in "protection" of Beck or other people. In the book, Joe is a condescending narcissist who kills anyone who gets in his way. He's basically Ted Bundy in a book store.
@lukarunningwolf8135
@lukarunningwolf8135 4 года назад
Yes! Exactly! Book Joe is more methodical. T.V. Joe is very spontaneous.
@haggisa
@haggisa 4 года назад
erin832001 He’s incredibly condescending and narcissistic in the show too, and from the very first episode. And he doesn’t kill people out of protectiveness, he kills them because they stand in his way to becoming the center of Beck’s world. That’s made clear in the show as well. People romanticise Joe’s actions, because they’ve conditioned themselves into excusing abusive behaviour perpetuated by attractive, smart guys. And that’s what’s truly tragic.
@erin832001
@erin832001 4 года назад
@@haggisa TV Joe definitely had selfish reasons to kill people for Beck, which he did try to justify, but he had no motive to care about Paco, and he still helped him out (in his own twisted way). I think they took a lot of pains to make Joe more likable/sympathetic on the show, by giving him a kid to care about, and by making the people he killed worse than they were in the book, because people wouldn't have been as drawn to the series otherwise. Both versions of Joe are selfish and narcissistic, but book Joe never cared about anyone but himself, and TV Joe cares about the people around him (to an extent).
@haggisa
@haggisa 4 года назад
erin832001 Yes, from what I gathered, he comes off as much more off putting and monstrous in the novel. He’s definitely a compelling and fascinating character in the series, but I worry about how many people find him likeable. Especially considering that his mental disorder and pathological results of it are layed out so clearly and blatantly by the show’s writing. I think he cared about Paco, because he was him as a young version of himself. I don’t think he would have been nearly as sympathetic to Paco’s struggle, if he hadn’t experienced physical and mental abuse himself. So killing Ron might have been a bit of a cathartic experience for him - annihilating the abuser, who represented the people, who had harmed him as a child.
@lukarunningwolf8135
@lukarunningwolf8135 4 года назад
@@haggisa I found his actions deplorable, and I never sympathized with him. I did find him attractive as a physical being but not enough to not be absolutely terrified by his actions. In the show it humanizes Joe and makes his mental state justified by very intense trauma, this contrasts in the book where he's obviously a psychopath. I really like the shows depiction of him, especially in season 2.
@delroy0
@delroy0 4 года назад
The show makes more sense in how they depict Joe's character because like in the show mind hunters they always try to tell you that serial killers normally go through some form of abuse or trauma, and that's why they become who they are. Even dexter went through shit when he witnessed his mother being killed by a chainsaw.
@fhasgw2398
@fhasgw2398 4 года назад
@@delroy0 They aren't the way they are because of the trauma, exactly. A lot of people suffer from symptoms of personality disorders. Abuse or trauma can bring out the worst of it though. After seeing The Dirt, and finding out that Nikki Sixx's childhood really was like that, it isn't far off from the abuse some serial killers go through. Personality disorders don't excuse behaviour, because many people who have them can live relatively normal lives, or at the very least, not murdering people.

@spunchbobby
@spunchbobby 4 года назад
Darcie Thomas Yes. Season 2 was the season that allowed for me to reach closure in knowing that Joe will never get better and that I can stop rooting for Joe. Because You is narrated by Joe 70% of the time, we sympathize with him since half of the time he tries to justify his horrifying actions. That’s why in season 1, Joe *almost* seemed like this heroic man willing to do anything for love; however, in season 2, after everything that happened, Love still loved him. She showed her true self to him which I can assure you, that’s what he wanted from the very beginning. But when she did, Joe’s illusion that Love was this “perfectly imperfect girl” was shattered. He believed she was insane and his “love ” for her faded even though she was perfect for Joe. Season 2 assured us that Joe never really loved Candice, Beck, and Love, he was obsessed with them. He’s just extremely mentally broken, he can’t control his compulsion to stalk and obsess over someone. Obsession is not love WHICH means, he hasn’t loved anyone so far into the show SO it’s safe to conclude that Joe isn’t a hero that’s willing to do anything for love, he’s actually a sociopath who’s murdered people to satisfy his obsessive needs, his *own* needs. Thank you for listening to my ted talk. (@notkarla_duh = my tiktok)

This is random, but am I only the one that thinks published authors/writers don’t get the recognition they deserve? I mean think about it. Many of the television shows and Netflix series we watch are based on a popular book series. For example: Pretty Little Liars, The Perfectionists (which was cancelled, but still) , The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, To All the Boys I’ve loved before, Twilight and I could go on and on but you catch my drift. My point is actors and actresses are hailed for their acting chops, they make millions per episode and have a huge stream of followers on social media and many fans. Directors are praised for the work! Streaming services are also incredibly popular and gain much profit. And yet, published authors and writers don’t get enough credit. Sure J.K Rowling and Stephen King (to name a few) are easily some of the most recognized writers. However, many people don’t even realize that some tv shows are based on books until videos like this or someone else mentions it. I don’t know, I kind of wish published authors and writers could get fame and credit like those who star on the shows and movies, roles that would be nonexistent if not for the writers. Anyways I know it’s completely random. Just wanted to throw that out there. 🤪
@yentl
@yentl 4 года назад
Pau No I completely agree and thought I was the only one who was thinking it. 1. I wholeheartedly believe that great authors deserve more attention and praise. 2. As a reader I rely heavily on movie, tv and video game adaptations to find my next read, which is annoying (as a reader) and unfortunate (for the authors cuz they can’t gain as much attention, fans, traction without an A/V adaptation.
@yentl
@yentl 4 года назад
On an unrelated note; I always wonder how people even _know_ about a story _before_ the adaptation, since good reads are so hard to find and barely marketed. Unless there have already been one or multiple A/V adaptations. E.g. “Mortal Instruments” was based on a series of books. Then it got a movie adaption (that’s how I found the series cuz I saw the trailer and promotional material). A few years later the books got a tv adaptation named “Shadowhunters”, but by then I had already read the books and seen the movie. All because there’d been 1 movie based on the books, a few years before. But no, I genuinely wonder how people find these gems. Both because I want to find new books to read and because I don’t understand how people are able to find something that’s not marketed.

Joe was intolerable in the book. Just a horrid person to be inside the head of. Pretentious, arrogant, misogynistic. But frankly, way more honest a portrayal of this kind of man. I think the show had a tall task to balance the way Joe presents himself vs. the way he truly is. Sometimes it falters and makes Joe more sympathetic than he truly should ever be. It's fascinating to see people who think he's justified or even attractive based on the show, having read the book where he's so abhorrent.

One thing in the book that I liked better than the show was Benji's death. In the book, Joe cremates him & puts his ashes in a container and leaves it in Benji's storage locker. Before he leaves, he opens up two bottles of Home Soda (one for Joe, one for Benji) and if I'm not mistaking he even lit a candle. He took a hat with him out of the storage locker, and the name imprinted in the hat is "Spencer Hewitt," which is the name he comes up with (in the show) right on the spot when a police officer stops him while on his way to spy on Peach & Beck. In the show it makes things an interesting easter egg, but I have a theory that in the show more to Benji's death happened off screen, possibly leading to him obtaining the hat & using the Spencer Hewitt alias when convenient.

One of my biggest disappointments reading the book was that Beck’s last writings were not even mentioned.. I loved the writing of Blackbeard’s castle and I wanted to so badly read it on paper. Turns out it was the writers on the show who wrote it. It was what made beck redeemable. Since that wasn’t in the book, I found beck to be very naive and selfish. She didn’t deserve to die . But still, she and joe were both tasteless characters in my opinion. For the first time EVER. I liked the tv series more than the book.

The bombshell that Beck *knew* Joe had followed her to her poem reading changed my perspective. What else did Beck know? Did she see him on the ship? Did she intentionally leave her curtains open? Did she knowingly toy with Joe's emotions? Every interaction between Beck & Joe changed in retrospect. Beck knew from Day 1 he followed her. And she never confronted him. Never ghosted him. What else did Beck know? This played around in my mind for a while. Beck surely didn't know Joe was killing folk or breaking into places - but she knew he was obsessed with her. Did she essentially have a sixth sense moment? Were missing items adding up & she expected to find them with Joe, instead finding her phone? Was Beck always playing with Joe? Her messages to Nicky did reveal her true thoughts. She thought of Joe as a toy. To use & abuse. She was never interested in anything other than keeping him on as a fling that wants more. Joe was never going to be the person for her. Joe just wasn't the guy. To be clear - Joe's an evil man. But if Joe hadn't have been killing people, hadn't have been breaking the law - she still wouldn't have ever tried it on with him for real. They were fundamentally incompatible people.

It’s the same concept the producers try to string you a long and make u feel comfortable in the decisions u make as if every kill he made was necessary to his survival even though any other sane human been would handle the situation in a much different way, instead they make u side with joe and make sure joe doesn’t get caught while in the process of getting the girl he’s chasing it’s trying to put u in the mind of joe even though his mind is literally wired in a much more complex way than other humans
