I have just today startet a new tank with Buces an Anubias. Let's see if melting will hit me...to be honest I have never seen these plants rotting away. Would like to know why this might happen, perhaps pH too low in new set-ups with soil?
@BRSfresh
@BRSfresh 6 месяцев назад
A lot of times it’s a deficiency of light. I would look at adding another light or buying a HIGH QUALITY light 💪
@detlefh.7090
@detlefh.7090 6 месяцев назад
Why would hardy plants such as Buces or Anubias melt under "low" or "bad" quality lights? They can grow even in shaded places. Also, melting is said to happen usually shortly after set-up (within days) which cannot be attributed to "bad" lighting. I suspect osmotic shock or very low pH (caused by soil) which the plants cannot handle due to lack of time for adaptation much over lighting problems.

For me Bucephalandra not really easy plants for beginner. they are expensive & easy to rot the rhizomes..

I would disagree with some of the entries on this list (even though they may be classic). I would take out Java Fern, Anubias and Crypts from this list because they are not easy, low tech yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean easy. These plants survive on a low tech set up, but they most definitely do not thrive in them. Java Fern just does not grow without CO2 despite labelled as a low tech plant. Instead of Java Fern, I would add Hygrophila Difformis (Water Wisteria), which has the same fern look but grows much faster. Water Wisteria is also a low growing creeping plant despite being a stem, so has this ancient fern feel to it. Instead of anubias I would add Schizmatoglotis Pretoi, which looks like Anubias but doesn't get coated in algae, and grows faster than Anubias. Another alternative to Anubias would be Hydrocotyle Leucocephala. And instead of Crypts I would add Helanthium Bolivianum Quadricostatus; Crypts will take forever to carpet whereas the Quadricostatus is one of the the fastest carpeting plants there is. I would also take out Bucephalandra as it just does not do very well in a low tech set up. Instead for a bit of colour I would add Nymphea Tiger Lotus. Marsila Hirsuta is okay for the foreground, but you won't get a carpet in a low tech set up. Anyone looking for a low tech carpet should consider Sagittaria Subulata, which also grow lovely white flowers (and I have a ton of these flowers). Sorry to highjack your post, but the video is titled 'easy' plants and not your 'favourite' plants, and some of the plants you picked aren't actually easy despite having a reputation for it.

Wow! Really appreciate your opinion here. There are a lot of different perspectives in this hobby and it’s important to share those so thanks for taking the time 😊

Oh yes, not only different perspectives but also wrong recommendations in this hobby. Java fern for example and I am talking about the mini version (which should not be any different from the bigger species) does of course grow beautifully without CO2 injection. I have had great growth with this plant and without CO2. Pls caution what ever you read from other people.

@@detlefh.7090 I have both narrow fern and trident fern , and have kept the regular fern, and I can quite confidently tell you that they do not grow without CO2. Mine eventually just withered away until I added (DIY) CO2 and it bounced back. Some people like yourself have reported success without CO2, but majority of hobbyists have reported a lack of success. I can only imagine that your tap water is higher in CO2 for whatever reason. Either way, java fern most definitely is not an 'easy' or 'beginner' friendly plant as it is so slow growing that it lacks the instant gratification that beginners would seek. For the same reason I do not consider Crypts and Anubias to be beginner friendly either as they are too slow to motivate the beginner.
@detlefh.7090
@detlefh.7090 6 месяцев назад
@@Organic_Body_Transformer First of, CO2 will support almost any plant to grow healthier and faster, this is common knowledge. Secondly, how much CO2 my tap water actually holds is an unknown to me. Since I treated it (at the time when I grew Java fern and did not use CO2) with H2SO4 to bring the KH down it may have contained quite a bit of CO2. BUT, as a child and that's over 50 years back I was already able to grow regular java fern easy as well. (Back then CO2 was considered to be poisonous to fish no one would have injected CO2 if it was available at all). You might be doing something else inappropriate/insufficient for the plant. Also, I do not consider java fern an absolute slow grower, given the right conditions it is quite speedy, of course not as fast as a Rotundifolia. Yes, I would not recommend Crypts and Anubias to the beginner either as the main focus/plants, there are much faster gowers out there which are better suited for beginner tanks. Thirdly, you reported that your java fern bounced back with CO2 injection, of course you have helped the plant's metabolism (see above) but there was something else missing to begin with (K+, NO3, PO4?).
@Organic_Body_Transformer
@Organic_Body_Transformer 6 месяцев назад
@@detlefh.7090 I very much doubt I did anything wrong since I can grow pretty spectacular tanks even without CO2. If you treated the water with sulphuric acid, enough to bring the kH down, then you definitely added enough CO2 to grow high tech plants, let alone java fern. 50 years ago, perhaps the water was different or perhaps you had a dirted tank (very common those days) with organic compost that will likely lower the kH and raise CO2. I think rather than thinking I am doing something wrong, it is more than likely that you are lucky with yours. This is especially considering more hobbyists would have had my experience than yours.
