Ecailles Des Lune is a masterpiece. I know I’ve mentioned this already but seeing Alcestis in that tour with Deafheaven as the opener made me go “Fine, I’ll check out Sunbather.”

Agalloch's The Mantle is my favorite metal album. What an emotional transcendental experience that is. I also love Ghost Reveries, Colors, Clayman, and Periphery II, but nothing tops The Mantle for my subjective experience. \m/

I really liked this video...Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk was my intro to black metal. The intro with the hooting owl still gives me chills every time I hear it. Truly a masterpiece.

Fantastic list, a couple of albums I haven't heard before. Listened to Deafheaven for the first time after watching your video and they are amazing. They remind me of Numenorean quite a bit. There's no doubt that Deafheaven influenced Numenorean, specifically the Sunbather album

nice list, would probably have inserted Exercises in Futility by mgla myself but it's a good list nonetheless. I think Sunbather & Excercises in Futility are my 'entry' black metal albums myself is why I place them so high - once I got into those it opened up a lot content to me that I had missed for years and I'm still exploring.

Alcest

The Mantle is absolutely a black metal record and a fkn classic and a masterpiece. The Satanist one of the darkest records ever made. Can't say enough about the first wave bands that hasn't been said. I give credit where it's due. I also have to throw in Woods of Ypres in for a sprinkle of blackened doom. Abyssic Hate (hate his ideals) but the suicidal emotions record is a fkn crazy one.

I actually just listened to Anthems by Emperor a few days ago. Great album, but I noticed that it sounds pretty samey throughout its runtime. For that reason, I'd say I'm more partial to In the Nightside Eclipse. Nightside Eclipse is actually my favorite black metal album, and Tales from Eternal Dusk by Dark Fortress is a very close second (I genuinely think this album is even better than Storm of the Light's Bane as far as melodic black metal goes). Awesome list!

Got some great suggestions from your list so thanks. Just getting deeper into black metal so this is a big help. Maybe because I’m just discovering and appreciating the genre, one of the best things I’ve heard is Blackbraid. Holy shit! Just pure and aggressive with the perfect amount of texture and great production. Would love to hear your thoughts

I need to expand my Black Metal horizons badly, I've listened to a few Black Metal albums from the past few years (ala Wolves in the Throne Room, Paysage D'hiver and Panopticon) but I haven't delved too far and I haven't given some of the classics a go. I'll use this list as a reference point and is there any others I should go for?

I have a real hard time getting on board with Tribulation fitting here - that is straight up death metal to a T. If The Horror is considered black metal then would pretty much have to put something like Serpents of the Light by Deicide in there too - that's probably closer to black metal in a lot of ways than The Horror and I don't know anyone who would argue that Deicide is a black metal band.

Just love the energy and the vibe of "friends just having fun and making music together") Other mentions: MØL - JORD Afsky - Ofte jeg drømmer mig død (Too recent release to say if it will stand the test of time, but something about black metal set to old danish poems is just so cool to me)

Dimmu borgir - enthrone darkness triumphant probably or stormblast🤔 Cradle of filth some of the Early records was preferred before emperor stuff. Enslaved sure kicks ass as well

Greetings from a fellow Torontonian. You seem pretty sure people will give you a hard time for your list. I don't know why they would as they know it's *your* channel and *your* list. Oh, never mind, I guess I know how youtube comments tend to go. If I made a list like this it would probably look quite different and mostly include stuff from the 80s and 90s. However, I got into this stuff a long time ago, and that's partially way. I did appreciate you doing this anyway and I do like some of those albums quite a lot (especially the Enslaved). Hah, you know people have been hating on Behemoth since at least 1998? It's nothing new. And of course they don't care -- they've done very well for themselves and even though I don't personally dig them all that much I do respect their fortitude and ambition.

What an awesome list Bro! You even included Enslaved, definitely my all time favorite band! And their best album, with me it’s a toss between Frost and Eld. Windir even, didn’t see it coming. Spectacular list all and all. I need to check out Alcest still, I haven’t gotten around to it just yet and I was starting the Deafheaven Sunbather album until something came up, so I’ll have to continue that album another day. I know the first track - Dreamhouse sounded fantastic! So naturally, I am intrigued to hear more. Enough rambling here is my ten favorite BM albums, albeit I’m in my 40’s and shit: 1. Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon (This was my intro into Black Metal due to a friend of mine that had cousins living in Norway sending him these killer bands vinyls, cds, cassettes, etc. Fucking Awesome times! I was at least 13 or 14 then) 2. Enslaved - Eld (was mesmerized of the musicianship and the vocals. Another connection of my friends, put it this way most of the Norwegian bands are stuff that he got from his cousins) 3. Immortal - Battles In the North ( I heard this constant blast beating and thought it over the top at first, but I started falling love with it as time gone on) 4. Dissection - Storm of the Light’s Bane (Better than the Somberlain in my opinion and so memorable, another gem in deed) 5. Dimmu Borgir - For All Tid ( Demon Burger time lol Jk in all seriousness I was in a dark place fuckin 15 years ago and thanks to this album and lots and lots of beer, it miraculously drew me out of my depression. I like how the synths and keyboards go well with everything, made the album beautiful) 6. Aura Noir - Black Thrash Attack ( I knew of blackened thrash but not like this holy fuck!) 7. I hate black-metal mostly but even I love sunbather and the satanist I vibe with it because how creative it is. Those are deffently my top black metal albums. I like them because they are not generic black metal.

Where's *Insert Demo of some obscure Scandinavian band that nobody but Music Of Destruction has ever heard or listen* Real talk now, it's nice to see a fellow Arntor lover. That album grew a lot on me over the course of last year, to the point that it surpassed 1184 as my favourite Windir album. As for Sunbather, while i think it's a bit overhyped, i also think it doesn't deserve all the crap it gets.
