Other amazing girls like Ashanti, Fantasia, Índia Arie, Kelly Price, Faith Evans deserve a place on this list.
I think Rihanna is better R & B artist than Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston. Rihanna is black, so she should be included. After all R & B means Rhythm & Black.

I was in a store which sells second-hand books and CDs. I asked the seller: "Have you Janet Jackson CDs". He answered to me: "It's in the Black music." So, I assumed that R & B means Rhythm & Black, just like a normal man would do. So I found Janet Jackson CDs in a liitle box. I am a big fan of Rihanna, so I am defintely not a racist!!! There needs to be a top 20 of this list. There are too many R&B greats that were left on the cutting room floor. Patti, Gladys, Brandy, Aaliyah, Lauryn, Toni, Teena, Jill, Erykah, and Minnie are all worthy of being on here. 6 of them may have gotten honorable mentions, but that isn't good enough. Not for me at least.
Just like Minnie Ripperton, Aaliyah didn't have a big enough catalog of music to a strong enough impact to be on the list. Did you notice everyone on that list had at least 10 albums released.

Secondly, she didn't reinvent that style, her song writters and producers, (particularly Timbaland & Missy) did, and you can here in other artists music as well, of that time era. She was somewhat influential, but not enough to make the list.

This list is trash. Most of these deserve to be on this list but Beyonce has no place here. Diana Ross is Motown, Whitney is Pop and Aretha is Soul not R&B! They should have artists like Aaliya and Toni Braxton here instead of those mentioned above since they are actual R&B artists.

Being important in Pop market doesn't mean they ain't R&B, all the time you can see rock bands, country singers, R&B and Hip Hop artists in Pop charts but it doesn't mean they are pop, Rihanna is definitely Pop, but Whitney, Mariah and Janet are R&B, her music and her style is R&B
Beyoncé's first two albums along with 4 were mainly R&B. I Am Sasha Fierce was urban pop, Lemonade and Self Titled are a mix of both R&B and urban pop. Most of the women you mentioned are a mix of R&B and urban pop. Rihanna is the only one that I don't consider an R&B singer and is straight up an urban pop artist.
I could live with this list since it was based on popularity even though a lot of people don't even know who Etta James is. One name I haven't seen in all the comments and should be on this list is Sade.

This list is all wrong those more established should be near the top. Beyoncé should be lower on the list. She doesn’t have the pipes as the other women on this list who gives a person goosebumps when they sing. She is one of the most influential and successful singers in history, particularly in the field of R&B. What's more, the commentary on her was pathetic. Instead of mentioning all of the R&B singers who cite her as an influence, or her record-breaking success on the R&B charts, they spoke about her early acting career - WTF?!

Arehta do not deserve to be on the top of this list. She is so petty in recent years. It is true - she is influential but Mariah and Whitney paved the way for any female singer in the past 30 years. Nobody in the music scene is more influential then two of them. And why did you put Chaka on this list? She has her moment in the 80's and after that rarely has been seen giving a stellar performance. Where is Patti LaBelle, where is Toni Braxton. What about Brandy. Even your beloved Beyonce has been saying so many times how much she loves Full Moon album and an impact this project has on her personally, vocally and musically.

Straight, pure R&B artists/songs rarely cross over to dominate on the Hot 100 & Top 40 (pop charts). For instance, a #1 R&B song will often time not even chart within the Top 40 on the pop charts. Janet, Whitney, Mariah, Diana & Beyoncé have elements of R&B but are more middle of the road; they're hybrid artists which allows them to dominate on the pop charts and not be confined to just R&B.
@Rhaegar Targaryen. Absolutely right. Aretha, Patti LaBelle and many others have lots of high charting R&B hits but barely any top 10 Pop hits. Whitney, Mariah, Beyonce and Diana are heavily pop with some R&B sprinkled in for flavor. This list should be reserved for the pure R&B artists who are so frequently imitated and stolen from but get little recognition. I would disagree about Janet. From the "Velvet Rope" onwards her music has been heavily R&B. ❤

In this 2 of my 5 Queens made the top 10 Chaka and Diana while Tina get a different list and Pattie and Gladys get honorable mention. Of my 5 Icons Mary J, Mariah, Janet, Whitney do make the list but Teena Maria don't even get a honorable mention and for my 5 idols Alicia Keys make the top 10 while Toni get a honorable mention but no word on Aaliyah Brandy Monica . I'm a fan of a lot of other female R&B singers but these are my Queens my Icon and my Idols these women shaped my musical taste growing up.

I would say whitney and Mariah are the same because they both have some of the biggest ballads and pop song in the world. But don't forget Whitney also had some R&b in the 80s and with MLIYL AND Just Whitney. B7t they both did and do r&b.
R&B has been way too watered down... Mariah undoubtedly has good R&B albums like Butterfly & The Emancipation but her discography is 70% pop with R&B undertones. Beyoncé is 80% pop even Love On Top won the Pop Grammy. Whitney was more pop-R&B as well. True R&B divas in my opinion are Brandy, Monica, Lauryn Hill, Ciara, Gladys Knight, Anita Baker, Aaliyah, Roberta Flack and Erykah Badu, Dionne Warwick among others, sadly their success was limited to R&B without massive pop crossover so they're overlooked. I feel that the most successful R&B artist are those with HEAVY pop influences and thus unjustly portraying R&B as something else.
