I'm surprised that they didn't mention the "cool girl" trope. The girl that's quote/unquote "not like other girls" because she likes things that are usually liked by men like sports, cars, video games, hard liquor, cigar-smoking, action films, etc., and can eat anything she wants i.e. fast food and junk food and still look effortlessly hot. A recent stereotype that has been driving me crazy is Disney’s perpetuation of “the perfect woman.” Ever since Rey was introduced in The Force Awakens, most of their live action female protagonists have been superpowered or innately skilled individuals who are good at everything they do, never suffer failure and are always morally right. It makes their characters extremely bland and implies that women aren’t going to get anywhere unless they are flawless and powerful from the start.

A trope for female characters that I hate (though tbh, I haven’t seen it very often in recent movies) is what I like to call the ‘masculine badass transformation’ where a female character starts off as being very traditionally feminine then something happens that makes the woman drop all their traditionally feminine traits and they take on traditionally masculine traits, this trope implies that back when that woman was wearing a dress, putting on make-up, and playing with dolls she was weak and pathetic, but then she dropped all that, starting wearing pants, picked up a sword and suddenly gained ridiculously, disproportionately, massive-sized muscles , and now she’s an awesome badass who ‘don’t need no man’ to save her or whatever.

That's true, also is weird to see someone getting femenine or masculine out of nowhere, if a girl is femenine she will pass away like it, if she is masc, same. My main point about this trope and why I hate it, is that face value, the people using this trope probably saw it at as this very powerful, feminist statement that women can be physically strong and can take care of themselves, when actually it's a deeply sexist trope that screams that being traditionally feminine is weakness, and something to ashamed of, and that if a woman wants to become strong and independent then they need to ditch traditionally feminine traits to do it, which is bullshit.

The bride trope is one of the worst because it´s so extreme and so connected to women in a stupid way. There is nothing wrong with love and marriage, in real life or in fiction. My criticism is all about how it´s often portrayed. According to the bride stereotype, every girl wants a princess wedding, but male characters never seem to dream much about love or marriage. It´s all about the bride, rarely the groom, and sometimes she is so desperate to get her princess wedding that´s she marries a jerk or someone she doesn´t even know. It´s beyond stupid.

One stereotype that can die for me, is the "Every woman with short hair is a lesbian (or at least bisexual) and almost every lesbian has short hair" trope... Sure, there are lesbians with short hair but no every woman with short hair like other women (in that way) and it perpuate a harmful stereotype that either hurt some girls/women or even prevent them from cutting their hair short when they want to but fear to be mistaken/seen as something they aren't. It would be a relief for quite a few girls and women to see a female character sporting a pixie cut, who aren't immediately also lesbians or bisexuals. Keeping it an open question (not every female (or male) character have to showcase their sexuality) or let them be straight, would be a boost to girls who are straight but can't stand long hair (luckily for them, it is getting more and more accepted for women to have short hair, without immediate assumptions about their dating preferences but still). Now, I personally am not affected (as a man with long hair, I can hardly be further from the trope), I see how it has affected friends and as a fiction lover, I also don't like it due to the feeling of lazy "color-coding" it has. It is often used to "clue" the viewer in about their sexuality, especially when they dress more unisex as well, before straightout telling or showing us a few moments later. And when it is a couple, it also feels incredibly lazy to have one of the women have short-haired and be more tomboyish while her partner is traditionally feminine in all traits... Yes, again, those couples will exist but not every lesbian couple looks that way (I personally know two couples where both women have a similar style). I'm all for inclusion (if done naturally and not in "look at me, look at how progressive we are") but please, be a bit more creative in this regard because it is too noticable and people already think too much in physical stereotypes...
@xd._.28234
@xd._.28234 2 года назад
That's true, for example, in Turning red, a pixar movie,the tomboyish girl is straight and one of her friends, who by the creator's words is a bisexual and likes another classmate of hers (even tho they don't have an open relationship bc censorship, you can see they like each other,at 1st they were together but had to change it to ""crush"" in slightly ways because censorship), are both femenine girls with long hair. Not the typically masc girl both of em or one from the couple. Also they thought about maybe the boy on my pfp(one of the friends) in being bi/gay at 1st, (ended as unknown sexuality because censorship again) is a masc boy, so if he ended being confirmed as queerr (for now he is just unknown what he likes), he wouldn't have been the typical femenine sparkly sparkly diva guy who goes pink or behaves extremely exaggerated,maybe even close to mockery. for example, in another pixar movie, a kid who is the villain, behaved extremely effeminate, that much that made him look ridículous and a bad representation of femenine guys by how was done. Also his stereotype was a "racist" profile from an Italian that hey, we all had our laughs,he was funny,but maybe some italians didn't like it?(i dunno tho, maybe they didn't mind) Is as if they say that all spanish (I'm spanish) love beer, paella, always napping, are rude and dirty etc. yeah, some are,ofc we are, but not everyone, the majority is the opposite

@@xd._.28234 Good to know some are at least trying to change this, The Boys already adressed the issue in one episode with the media team of Vought trying to pull the latter in a way with Maeve and her girlfriend (both are traditionally feminine and they wanted to alter this a bit for the girlfriend) but the only other recent example that comes to mind would be Mother from Raised by Wolves. But I know more examples of media doing the trope straight and I know it hurts some people, because in general, people think in stereotypes, especially when they emboldened in media and make unwelcome assumptions (no one wants to be seen as something they aren't).

@@BjornV1994 ikr? couldn't agree more!!! For example I'm not a transgender man, i am a woman, but manly/masc one. Sometimes got asked if i was transgender (identifying like a guy), or if i was lesbian/bi. And yes, in my case i am "the stereotype", but I know lesbian/bi women who are femenine. Hell, my old bully from secondary school is an extremely femenine bisexual girl, or an old friend's girlfriend is so so masc but is straight!! Both are from the skater community Or when i was younger literally suffered transphobia comments even tho I'm not even a transgender 💀 But they assumed i was one because of my clothes and behavior And idk, but not everyone is a transgender, or there are extremely femenine guys and people assume that ALL OF THEM identify as female because ofc no way a cisgender guy ( a guy who was born xy and identifies as guy too, for example) would behave "like a woman", when some guys are extremely femenine as some woman are extremely masc, and keep being man and woman respectively, or some men dressing like woman(drag queens), don't make them transgender necessarily,most of em are actually cisgender too, they dress like woman because other reasons,gender identity isn't one of them most of the cases. Some drag queens even are literally straight and married,but ofc a man dressing like woman for society can't be straight and have a gf having fun with dresses next to him, right? -_-
@BjornV1994
@BjornV1994 2 года назад
@@xd._.28234 It is often ridiculous, I agree... Due to having long hair (I'm a metal fan and I too pretty much fit the physical stereotypes that comes with that, sans tattoos or body modifications. I often wearit on my sleeve as I like the style), I was once used as an example in a discussion about transgender as "you now have long hair"... Yeah, and I wear a band shirt, pretty clear link I would say... And this is just my hair length, I don't use make-up or do anything with my nails other that keep them somewhat short... There is nothing about me that would lead to such conclusions and yet... But I've seen this happen a lot more to girls with short hair. Whether they are actually are lesbian or not, the assumption is quickly made. And I feel media plays an important role in this. By constantly confirming this image, constantly establishing this link between the two, people are programmed to think that way and by actually acting on it, it is a good way to destroy someone's confidence in their identity. While there is a lot of different reasons why people dress and act the way they do. Often just because they like it better that way. Nothing more, nothing less. And I'm happy you mentioned the skater community, I would add the punk community to it as well or alternative culture in general as communities where alternative hair and clothing styles are common (the festival summer is upon us and I'm sure I will see a lot of dudes in skirts again, which is fine with me as long as they wear underwear). In all these environments, these things are also common but it says nothing about the gender or sexuality of the person. And I'm not saying that no short haired character can be a lesbian but it would a nice change of pace to for example see a film/series, with a short haired girl is a straight punker, while their long haired friend is the gay one and in a relationship with someone similar to herself (the latter isn't necessary but I don't want to give anyone the feeling I want to take away their representation, I don't mind it as long as the work isn't going out of its way to insult me). It would shake things up a bit and would come across as less lazy (but as always, it still need some proper writing, just checking boxes for its own sake is also very demeaning). But yes, as much as Hollywood wants to act like they care, it is still pretty clear they often care rather little.

Whether it's a weird term, or not; and regardless of where one wants to start drawing the line, the fact of the matter is that you are going to have far, far fewer "plus-sized" characters (of either gender) in any sort of standard role. If you look at the top box office performers each year (and let's just write-off comic book movies for right now), there are not many roles AT ALL -- male or female -- for anyone beyond a pretty small physical type. It's frankly no different in the world of, say, cable news. The vast majority of new hires (again, any gender) are younger, attractive. Many of them are, tbh, stunning. The reasons, are ofc, fairly simple: People are more likely to tune into watch someone who represents the sort of person they want to look at. And really, I totally understand that completely. I mean, I'm a straight guy, and even then, if every male news anchor or late night host looked like George Clooney or Brad Pitt -- I'd end up watching more. Just the way it is.

A lot of these tropes can apply to men as well. Men can lose it after a breakup as well, but women seem to make more of a big deal about it. Some men feel like they need a woman in their life as well. There are some men who feel unhappy because they put their work above their personal life. And movies like Kill Bill show us that men can be disposable as much as women. Seeing men fall in these tropes is rare, but the fact is they still fall in these tropes. It's that we see these tropes more often with women than we do with men.

Well as Donald Glover stated in his standup, the reason you hear plenty of crazy ex-girlfriend stories, but not a lot of crazy ex-boyfriend stories, is that if you have a crazy ex-boyfriend, you’re gonna die. So in other words, a crazy ex-boyfriend will stalk you and kill you, and a crazy ex-girlfriend will ruin your life by harassing you and humiliating you with lies. It’s definitely a case of sexist male projection because it lets guy who harass and stalk their ex-girlfriends off the hook by making the women look worse by comparison.

Actually in real life men tend to be much more volatile and dangerous after a rejection, let alone a breakup. Women making a big deal out of it is, like the list says, just a stereotype. I can agree to all of these. However, in the interests of equality, there are stereotypes of men that we see in romantic comedies, romance movies, and romance books, that are pretty irritating. Hear me out on this. Such as this trope that's done waaaaayyy too many times in romance, dark romance, romantic comedies and so on. The trope of two or more men chasing after the main character (who is often the plain jane stereotype). What's irksome about this is the reaction of people. Most seem to have no issue about two men fighting over one woman. Yet, when it's two women fighting over one man, it can be seen as being a "sexist male fantasy".

It's also decidedly not feminist to have these you go girl type characters who are really just exhibiting toxic masculinity. The fact that we're meant to cheer when a woman punches or humiliates a guy is both misandry and misogyny. The Smurfette Principle -- only one woman among a multitude of male principal characters. Even if some iconic films employed it (e.g. all the Star Wars films up to the sequel trilogy; every Indiana Jones movie), this is a trope whose time has passed, IMO. If a movie has only one major female character, whether the writers intend this or not, people are going to see this character as somehow representative of Women in General, and they're going to lay a bundle of unfair expectations at her feet. Having more than one frees female characters from the burden of being seen as "the Chick."

Personally, I want romance involving female and male characters to be de-emphasized because it usually screws over the woman’s character. Women are more than love interests; their value shouldn’t depend on how much they benefit a man. Also, I want more diverse female characters. I feel that women, a lot of the time, are made to be supposedly “desirable,” whether it be physically, as a love interest, etc. before being put on screen, which limits how they’re written. Thus you don’t really see as many flawed, powerful, evil, and unattractive women as you do men in media (I also see this a lot in anime and it annoys me so much).

Not saying women can't do these things, simply that most of them don't. So when there's a cast of a handful of tactical soldiers and there's a female shoehorned into the group, every time, I'm like really? Out of the tiny percentage of women trained in elite combat, one of them keeps happening to be involved in every one of these missions? It's like Jesus enough already we get it, there are women that choose to do things other than the things the overwhelming majority choose to do. I see this happen a lot of movies and tv shows when the male character is either portrayed as not very bright or just a complete douchebag. @Tore_Lund

Get this straight: Stereotypes in movies are a necessary evil. We need them to characterize characters efficiently, but use too many of them and the character as well as the movie becomes too stupid. Men are stereotyped as much as women, maybe even have fewer brackets to choose from? A character becomes interesting when it breaks the setup expectations, both by the premises setup in the movie, but also societal norms. Should stereotypes evolve and follow society? Yes of course, but we can't avoid them unless you want to make a 3 hour art movie with little dialog, where no cliches are used and you simply learn to know the inner life of characters through observing them doing mundane stuff. If the logic of stereotypes in a movie, female or male, is part of the resolution and conclusion of the movie (norms were right after all), it is simply a badly made movie not worth watching.

I don't like the funny plus size friend in movies either because it makes some of them think they are that.

No. Most is wrong. You obviously don't remember a time in your life when you ever felt like some on this list.

The urge to write about a well-rounded feminist lesbian but has dated a few men but after years of fighting comp-het is finally coming out and fighting against injustice but also is feminine without it being comic relief just give women what we need in literature and media. I call it “not your f*cking Barbie”

The type of women who fight with men and are equal party. And knock the men down like it's nothing which is unrealistic. I get very tired of this Hollywood agenda.

Love the proposal film. But def not much of a fan that a transformation is needed to feel worthy and beautiful. They were always beautiful

@@andrewjones575 writing may not be that great and it's so predictable amongst other things for sure but I can't help but like those kinds of movies cuz they remind me of my mom cuz we watched them together ( the proposal/you've got mail/ pretty woman/how to lose a guy in 10 days etc) movies she liked kinda hold a special place my heart even if they aren't well written etc (rant over sorry)
