Can't believe lamonica is here but Stabler isn't same offense but Stabler won multiple playoff games played in 8 or 9 afc championship games and won a superbowl
Sonny Jurgensen ranked at #3 is the ultimate wildcard that few expected, myself included. I've heard of him but didn't KNOW of him. Looking at his stats, his career TD passes are only 18 behind Joe Montana's and ahead of Steve Young, Kurt Warner and Troy Aikman. And the way he effortlessly threw the ball with touch and accuracy is a sight to behold. Now I KNOW of Sonny Jurgensen.
Once again, Joe Willie makes a list of greats...mostly based on ONE game. And it's deserved! Great release, great swagger, and then he actually delivered. Mind you, I had some trouble with the Hall of Fame, because his career stats aren't even average. but he was football's "It!" boy of the 1960-70s. Hell, the girls alone probably put him in the Hall.
I'm not even mad at it, like it or not his celebrity helped elevate the league to a bigger level of status - and he was entertaining to watch at the end of the day on and off the field.
I had Bills' season tickets back in the late 80s-early 90s and got to see the Kelly-Marino duels in person. I got to see a lot of real good football back then. In 1999, all Kurt Warner was doing was playing Arena football at the NFL level.
Look at what he had, Holt, Bruce , FAULK, Dre Bly, Prohl, stacked assed team. They could have put Jeff George in there and probably won that year. And that Cardinals team was the same way. Not to take away from Warner he is a good Quarterback but wayyy overrated.
@@Office_De_Receiver_Complaints the cardinals team was definitly NOT the same way. Matt Lionhardt was the QB and they sucked, once they switched to ole graybeard they actually started winning. Kurt Warner deserves his credit.
@@Noles4life77once they switched to Kurt, they went 2-8 lmao. Wtf are you talking about? He was 2-8 his first season in Ari. 1-4 the next year, and 5-6 the following year. He went 9-7 in. 08' and 10-5 in 09'. Btw, they actually regressed when the put in Warner. They were 6-10 the year prior to getting Kurt. They were 5-11 with Kurt as the primary QB going 2-8 with 11 Touchdowns in 10 games, and 9 picks. That dog shit you call Matt Leinhart, even though he wasn't even on the team anymore and it was actually Josh McCown, went 3-3 that year. They weren't good until Kurt's 4th year with the team. They got lucky going to the Superbowl too. They were 7-3 at one point, finished the season 2-4 with a beat down of 47-7 loss against the Pats. He got over 1100 yards from his Running backs that consisted of Edgerin James, Tim HighTower and JJ arrington. A very good backfield. Then he had 2 all timers in Anquon Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald lmao. That team was stacked. Don't forget Steve Breaston who everybody thinks is a slouch but had over 1,000 yards receiving that year. Leagues 3rd best offense that year and it's only because all they did was throw the ball. Those 1100 yards from his running backs, should have been 2000+ if they didn't rely on Kurt to throw 40 times a game. Their running backs had a COMBINED 302 carries. That's 19 running plays per game. If they ran it 25-27 times like normal teams do, that running back core gets you 1600+ yards easily. Kurt was solid. No doubt. But he was overrated and has the benefit of great teams. Look no further than Marc Bulger on that rams team. He dominated his first year with the Isaac Bruce's and The Faulks, but the following year, they got a year older, they were aging, and he flopped. Same thing that would have happened to Warner. There's only a few guys who can make a career of this when it doesn't matter who they're throwing too. The list is short. Brady. Manning. Mahomes. (Although we haven't seen Mahomes do it yet with the scrubs like Reche Caldwell, I suspect he could if he had too)
Warren Moon, the only player inducted into the halls of fame for both gridiron codes, American and Canadian Canadian football is also like, purpose-built for gunslingers, Doug Flutie has 4 of the top 10 passing yard seasons in CFL history and his worst of those is still 500 yards more than Manning threw in 2013
Interesting note: Before he was a football star Sammy wanted to play professional baseball. He got his slingin' nickname because he was such a good pitcher.
Fouts once commented on his nickname, "Dangerous". "Probably because I threw so many interceptions". I went to a game against the Raiders when he threw 5 interceptions, but the Chargers still won on a Fouts to Jefferson touchdown in overtime.
What a throw by grey beard Kurt Warner...always makes me chuckle. From working in a grocery store to gunslinger, definitely a western with a happy ending😂😂
I was semi-recruited by Otto Graham to play ball at Coast Guard. Okay, be real, I was recruited because I had really good ACT scores and happened to play football.
In the 60's and 70's there were lots more gunslingers. After Bill Walsh and the West Coast teams want a game manager not someone who goes deep every chance they get.
Daryle Lamonica might be the most underrated quarterback of all time. For a while he won almost every game, threw for a million yards, and did not have a huge TD-INT ratio for a guy that played in the 60s.
Fran Tarkenton was correct - the fact that he, Johnny Unitas and Joe Montana aren't on the list are three huge omissions. I would put them on there along with Terry Bradshaw, Norm Van Brocklin, Bobby Layne, John Elway and Drew Brees. Of the remainder, the only issue I have is that Daryle Lamonica should be in the Hall Of Fame.
Honestly, And I'm a HUGE Favre fan.... he IS the greatest gunslinger alright but in my greatest, greats list he is in....but not at the level overall I rank certain guys. Favre would probably land between 8-12 all time. I'd give Marino the Goat award in my HOF. If just not for Montana. I'm sorry for many reasons it'd take all day and I'll keep to myself Brady isn't even up there. Joe Montana is the greatest Quarterback to ever play the game.
Today the Bills Josh Allen is the definition of a gunslinger. But the Chiefs Patrick Mahomes is the evolution of a gunslinger, all positives with none of the drawbacks, that's why he's so scary (I'm not a Chiefs fan, I'm sure they don't think he's scary). He's even the evolution of the gunslingers attitude, all swagger on the field but quiet and respectful off of it. I'm damn glad my team is in the NFC and he's not
Funny... Warren Moon's actually the second guy I thought of after Favre, on account of arm strength, mobility, and of course his offense is literally called "run and shoot". Never considered the fact he might be *too smart* to be a top 3 Gunslinger though. xD
Yea warren moon was actually too accurate and made too many of the right plays to be considered a gun slinger, almost in the same sense at patty mohomes. They’re more like snipers than slingers
Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia would be on this list if their CFL careers were added to their NFL accomplishments. Garcia was Flutie's backup for 1 year, then Flutie gets hurt in the 2nd quarter, so Garcia throws for almost 600 yards in 3 quarters in his very first CFL game in 1995.
I grew up in Beaver Falls PA and went to school and was on teams with Namath's nephews. I remember being at a baseball game or the movies and Joe Namath would just be sitting somewhere nearby chilling. I could sense he was cool even though he was an old dude and I was a young kid.
When I think of gunslinger in reference to quarterbacks Brett Favre is the first name that comes to mind. I am a little surprised that John Elway didn't make the list as he would be the second that comes to mind to me, though I would never argue against Marino. He is is more of a sharpshooter. Good lord that release though. I wish we could watch full games from that era rather than just highlights.
This is one of those lists where everyone will argue about who #10 through #2 should be but there's no doubt in anyone's mind who #1 is. I'd never seen this before, and predicted every position wrong (as well as half the names) _except_ #1.
I'm 46 years old.. Warren Moon BY FAR..greatest gunslinger I've ever seen! Houston..THE SOUTH said..fuck it.. RUN AND SHOOT with this guy... Gunslinger offense. They literally said..Brett Farve "looks the part.. You gotta look the part" even this countdown if overlooking Moon..who they wouldn't draft... Won 5 straight CFL championships...then they allowed him in NFL... Made him highest paid and he would currently be 5th all time passing yards as a professional qb of combine with CFL yards...and still currently 12th after really losing 5 years to CFL. and people will qualify that by saying he spent 5 years in CFL...like its HIS fault NFL wanted to make him a receiver... Maybe he'd have EVEN more yards if started in NFL...GOAT
Moon is a great QB....I love Warren and that Oilers team was awesome. I think Frank Reich and another super power knocked a lot of wind out of them in 92. But Goddam! Wasn't that not one of the greatest games ever played? Tbh, Flutie and Moon never really got their due. But Brett got 3 time MVP back to back and that's plus a ring and 212+ starts is a feather that's hard to get in your cap. All time I rank Kelly over Favre though, and Warren is more like Jim than Brett... That said, being a Gunslinger and an all around QB are two different things. You know who gets overlooked a lot? Randall Cunningham.
@@cyrillesu Against 420 TD's lol... His TD-INT ratio is far better than most highly regarded QB's and if you do the math probably similar to Joe Montana. Dan also threw much more than Montana AND deeper into tighter coverage which is a higher risk for INT's.
You have to wonder what might have happened in Super Bowl VII if Jurgensen was healthy. Mandich and the rest of the Dolphins may have been lucky that Jurgensen was hurt.
@@genealexander5705 Warren was a bad man. Too bad he had to play in Canada for 5 years to prove his worth. His NFL stats would be pretty scary if he played all his years in the real pro football. He threw one of the prettiest balls I've ever seen...
@@chrisshockey5845 I'd check that. He threw THE prettiest ball ever thrown. I haven't seen another QB noted more for his spirals more than Moon. His receivers simply didn't have an excuse for dropping any of his passes
I'd like to now see a list of the worst gunslingers - those who's boneheaded insistence on trying to make things happen at any cost resulted in their making plays that hurt the team. Jeff George, Jay Cutler, Don Majkowski and Brett Favre (did anyone have more games end with a pick 6?)
Jeff George, Matthew Stafford, John Elway, Terry Bradshaw, John Hadl, Lynn Dickey, Neil Lomax, Carson Palmer, Tony Romo, & Patrick Mahomes should be on an updated greatest NFL “Gunslinger” quarterbacks list.
I’ve watched like all of these and never felt the urge to comment but Joe Namath at 10 is utterly ridiculous. Considering the criteria for what the panel deems as a gunslinger Joe should be in the top 5. Arm talent is elite bravado and charisma are legendary toughness, swagger etc. the only knock is the stats because 1 he played in a totally different era and 2 HE WAS A GUNSLINGER and wasn’t concerned with turnovers. In fact he didn’t win a championship until he realized that he had to be different. I rest my case
Hell yes! You know the game. His arm was up there with Elway, Marino, Moon & Bradshaw. Ppl who pick on his stats don’t understand that these QBs didn’t throw as frequently & in a defensive game deep interceptions were not discouraged.
R. William Comm thanks I love learning the history of the game. Also the whole point of a gunslinger is that they are willing to take a chance. Namath certainly never hesitated to do that!
@ Grant Mcgee Joe Namath is the most overrated player in the history of the NFL! The guy was colorblind and had way more career interceptions than TD’s. Maybe if he didn’t show up to Gameday hungover all the time, he would’ve put up better numbers. And it really helped his career that he had Maynard as his receiver. Maynard was a stud!
a 'slinger' to me, means a big time passer, who could throw the ball through a wall for starters, would salivate if the coach said that he'd (qb) would be throwing EVERY down for an upcoming game. First one who comes to mind, is Elway, then Favre and Marino. My top three.
It is so interesting watching these films of Namath and Marino's passes. I swear they could throw further and more accurate then Brady and the QB's of today.
I'm not a Lions fan, but you're right. He's the very definition of a QB gunslinger. 50+ pass attempts in like every game?! That's... a shame actually lol
I like his other quote personally: "When you walk on that field, you gotta feel like you're the best...sumbitch that's out there." Greatest and most accurate quote in NFL history.
When you hear Vermeil say we will rally around Kurt Warner and will play good football that changed everything in the 1999 season from back in the day 7:27
I think the antithesis of a gunslinger is a backup who comes in with the game in the balance, needs to make a decisive throw for a first down, and throws for 3-5 yards out of 7-10 needed because they're fearful of the wrong move. A gunslinger in football is never afraid of the wrong decision no matter how many times they point the gun at themselves with their decision making. They dont see 3 defenders draped all over a guy, they see the big play about to happen. They don't care if its 1st and 10, or 4th and 26, it takes guts to play any down so why approach any down differently? A gunslinger in football can be everything right about the sport in its purest childlike form of magic and heartbreak. They can be the reason a team is 11-5, and 5-11. They are the most volatile player on the field at all times and when you think of the biggest gunslingers in history, they are must see TV because of it.
Warren Moon has the most electrifying great accuracy in nfl history he can throw the best prettiest balls to any wide receivers including his teammate in Seattle Joey Galloway
As a packers fan Brett Farve definitely effected my blood pressure way more than Rodgers. Rodgers slings but doesnt turn it over enough to be a gunslinger
The guy that should be right behind Favre on this list is Mathew Stafford. Some of the guys on this list are great Quarterbacks but they are to polished to be gunslingers. A gunslinger isn't defined by high stats alone, they are high risk, high reward usually due to having big arms.
No Ben. And no Doug. That’s okay, it’s not like Big Ben has led the league in longest throw at least 4 times or that Doug Williams was said to be able to throw a football endzone to endzone.
Brees is excellent & HoF bound but but he doesn’t have a canon arm nor did he play in an era where a QB was expected to hang in the pocket & take big hits for clutch long completions. Maybe there should be a category for “modern gunslingers” because he really is one of the greatest of all time.
