Had he WANTED it, he could've been a top tier passing talent. When his legs started to give, he showed that he had an arm. If he put in the grind, he'd be up there with Manning, Brees, Brady in stats. Probably the most God gifted athlete to play football. Imagine if he'd given even 80-90%.
Getting Instructions Agree but I also believe that Vick is a good example of how a team owner can decide to force a West Coast offense on a QB when there were MUCH better options. Imagine switching Lamar Jackson to a West Coast Offense right now.
wasn't a raiders fan, but was a Snake Stabler fan. you miss that in this era of loudmouths, of too-serious, or so on.....just a laid-back Southern kid, never too riled up, having a good time.
John Madden use to say in modern times there was no one he'd want as a QB other than Stabler, when the pressure was on and the clock was running out. Plus he called most of his own plays, unlike most of the QB's in modern times.
The left side of the raiders line was amazing with Stabler I don’t think what Upshaw and Shell did on the left and what Henry Lawrence and John Vella did on the right is talked about in terms of what a line has to do for a left handed quarterback.
So in the disclosing my personal bias' I'm a middle aged Steeler fan, I knew Steve Young would be number 1 on the list because he''s like the safe pick for people but I'd take Kenny Stabler. Just remembering them days, them playing, it was like the 2 baddest MF'ers squaring off and Kenny Stabler was a great representation of that team.
Holy crap, I never thought about the reversal of the rotation of the ball. Sure to some it might just be trivial and others it comes down to just being a mental issue, but after 15 years give or take of experiencing something a specific way I could see that causing a mistake or two the first few times dealing with it maybe ...but then again if that's something that makes you screw up, then you probably shouldn't be in the league
It's a thing, but not hard to adjust to. My dad was lefty so the first throws I ever had to catch spun that way. I never thought about the different rotation.
2:27 Scott Mitchell. 5:48 Hey! Where's TIM TEBOW?! 11:05 Bobby Douglass. 15:45 Jim Zorn. 18:54 Michael Vick. 23:26 Mark Brunnell. 27:05 Frankie Albert. 30:38 Boomer Esiason. 35:09 The Snake, Ken Stabler. 39:50 Steve Young.
Tom Moore worked absolute magic with Scott Mitchell in 1995. It's ridiculous how much better Mitchell was in 1995 compared to the rest of his career. He was legit playing like a top 3 QB that season.
As a kid who lived in Chicago at the time Bobby Douglass was the QB for the Bears. He was so entertaining to watch and I loved watching his games. Then I lived in Jacksonville when Mark Brunell played for the Jags. He was exciting to watch, he ran an offense well and then boom, he took them to the playoffs. All of JAX was Jags Crazy! It was so much fun. My dad had season tickets. Jim Zorn was heck of a player. He scrambled like Tarkenton and when he had time to throw the ball, he could really put the ball down the field. Mike Vick has my wrath for the dog fighting stuff, but he paid for it. As a football player, he was amazing. Frankie Albert had so much going against him, yet was a great player for the 49ers. I know of him because I lived in SF, just before I joined the military. I loved my NFL history from time I wrote a little newsletter for our neighborhood about the sports scores and highlights over weekend. I had a shortwave radio and could pull in stations from all over the country. So, I got scores before my friends did watching the local tv stations. That was in the early 1970s, long before the internet. Boomer Esiason was a great addition to the Bengals. I'd lived in Cincinnati for 2 years in high school times and met my wife there when we were 15. Ken The Snake Stabler was incredible! I was in SF about then and one of my former teachers played offensive line for them. Mr. Dave Rowe taught metal shop to me in NJ when I was a kid. Mr. Rowe was the biggest teacher I ever had and was also the nicest guy I ever had as a teacher. What a truly great man. Yeah, Steve Young. Hmmm ... I am still not a big fan of his. I'm sorry, I'm a Joe Montana fan forever. I'll give Steve Young respect, he was definitely a great player. Though I'm still a faithful Joe Montana fan, period. Sorry Mr. Young, nothing personal.
Rowe played D-line. I think he was about 6'7." He must have had some great stories! Joe and Steve were both top ten all-timers. I can be objective here because I was always a Raiders fan and so had no dog in that particular fight.
Completely agree. Brunell never got the respect he deserved. He’s still the best Jacksonville QB ever. He had a great arm, was super smart, and had a long career. Had it not been for the Titans, the Jags would have made it to the Super Bowl in 99 and would have really given the Rams a run for their money.
@@thejman8734 bro what yeah 11-25 144 yds and 1int yeah the he had the game won dude didn’t even play good in either playoff game icky woods did for him I swear y’all say anything that comes to minf
@@gabrieldodds1365 If you are a slewhawk fan, that is why you are biased against Stabler. Maybe if Young had played more, and was not bad in the beginning of his career I'd agree. Stabler was good from the start and one of the most clutch QB's of all time.
Steve Young was a great QB but his struggles against the Cowboys and Packers, the two other great NFC teams of the 90s kind of put a damper on his career. He did get the last laugh against both teams though and that Super Bowl win which is what really puts him in HOF status
I think so long as you get that one SB win... How many guys only got one? Fabre? A-Rod? How many guys didn’t even get one? Marino? Not sure why Young gets shit for “only” having one. You don’t hear that about other guys.
What a profound statement Mike Magary made, on a list ten best left handed QB’s he said “he’s on the list because he’s a left handed QB” earth shattering insight right there. Plus he apparently is stalking Suzy Kolber.
Poor Scott Mitchell - no one likes him. Even though he's probably one of the best lefty QBs - and one of the best Lions QBs - ever. Those are very low bars, yes - but Mitchell *just* barely clears them.
Scott Mitchell is one of NFL Networks favorite punching bags for some reason. His spot at #10 is pretty much an inside joke, even though I think its harsh
The thing about Mitchell I think about is that he wasn’t as good as the 2 guys that preceded him. I mean Erik Kramer helped them get all the way to the NFC Championship game in 91 and Dave Kreig had several good years in Seattle as well as a good year in 94.
I remember being a ten year old Lions fan and thinking we found the guy that's going to get us there when Mitchell signed with the lions. We had the reviewers, the fullback, the line, the best running back ever and now we have a QB. But just like everyone else they put behind center for Detroit in the 90's he had a handful of flashes of brilliance but a majority of the time he was average to below average when the game really mattered. Still he was better than Andre Ware, Erik Kramer, chuck long, Rodney Peete, Bob Gagliano and some other no name guys I can't remember... But when all is said and done I would've taken Mitchell over Kitna... God it's hard to be a faithful Lions fan.
It's a low bar, but at least with him the Lions got to 3 playoffs in 4 years. It's not like they were consistently good before he got there. Then they were pretty awful for most of the next 12 years after they dumped him.
I love lefties. They are for one rare and they look cool throwing the ball. Not to mention they have personalities that stand out. Stabler by far the coolest. Boomer had swag and Steve Young thought he was a fullback.
I mean Scott Mitchell never won a playoff game and (in my opinion) wasn’t as good as either of the guys before him (Dave Kreig and Erik Kramer). Sure he had one good statistical season but Tebow won a playoff game in dramatic fashion. I probably would have the list Mitchel 10 and Tebow 9.
Boomer was The Man in The 80’s. He was 1 of the best in the entire NFL from 85-90, 2 Super Bowl losses to Montana. Him & Ickey Woods were the AFC’s 9’ers/WCO. 2 SB’s & an MVP of The League. Yea, he was sick.
Louis Lamberti Oh shnapz... All this time I seriously thought that was Boomer. Since I was a kid I thought that but it was because I was just old enough to remember when it was him.
vick below brunell or albert is wild. it's like people forget that vick had literally nobody to throw to in atlanta and he still found ways to win games.
People really be disrespecting Mark Brunell. Guy was a solid quarterback for many years, but just cause he played for Jacksonville means oh he wasn’t even that good
Facts i dont get the disrespect for Mark Brunell Mark Brunell 3x pro bowler and also took Jaguars a young franchise to a AFC championship Mark Brunell was mobile and can throw
@@johnselwitz5362 I do too. I don't care for overreaction firings especially in sports, but the NFLPA was probably smart for letting that neurologist go.
@@Gungho73 I agree, with how much money NFL neurologists make, mistakes like that should not happen. Not only is that putting Tua’s career in jeopardy, but also his health in general. I’m not a Dolphins fan but I really do hope he’s able to make a comeback from this. His performance against the Ravens this season was absolutely brilliant quarterback play.
@@johnselwitz5362 when a news site was coming out saying maybe he should retire to protect himself from stuff like that, as much as it is an overreaction in of itself, I could understand the sentiment. I would be freaked out for example if my relative (played for Vikings back in the day) was still playing and had that or what happened to Tyrod Taylor. And injuries are a part of the game. But those injuries are *avoidable.*
I’m a lefty and it’s interesting how lefties seem to be able to throw on the run typically or more often than right handlers, not sure why that is. Probably because the percentage is just lower
At least left handed people are allowed to potentially become QB. Tough shit for all those left handed people who wanted to play baseball and be an infielder not at 1B.
"The Field" refers to all the lousy lefty QB's that played, some with promise, but ended up being busts in the NFL. The way they set that up, it was a slight on Scott Mitchell more than anything.
No, he won't be. We said that about Matt Leinart. And some said it about Tebow, McNown, Chris Simms, ect, ect, ect. Hope you're right. But I wouldn't get too excited about it. Maybe in three years you can tell me how stupid I was for thinking this.
Stabler should be number one, should’ve been in the HOF LONG before young was. Cried his way to a starting position. Joe should never have been traded. The tears, the shaking!
They talked about Michael Vick 2.0 being better than Michael Vick the first go around in the nfl meaning after his 2 year stint out of the league which reminds me, no one ever talks about a theory that I have that the 2 year rest of the body taking hits likely helped him. The human body isn’t made for the nfl and I think it’s likely there was a rejuvenation of his physical skills after that 2 year hiatus.
I'm convinced that the guys, who made the list rankings, all made a huge bet that Scott Mitchell would be an All-Pro in Detroit. He didn't, they lost all their money, and this is their payback: to put The Field before Mitchell. Even the remake with Tebow still counts as payback to them.
The reason there have only been about 35 lefty QBs is that any kid who is decent enough throwing a ball with his left hand is taken off the football field and put on a pitcher’s mound
Good list. Steve definitely number one but as good as he is was I still believe they would have won more than one super bowl if Joe Montana was the man.
