I'm back with 10 more JRPGs that are the hardest I've ever finished. They were quite challenging for me but I managed to beat them! Support my channel HERE: / ericklandon Buy my latest book HERE: www.amazon.com/dp/B07HBZYN3F
You can make the last boss in Star ocean 2 10x harder if you visit the first town before you kill him.He moves so fast you can't even hit him(bunny shoes don't help) lololol.
As someone who cut his teeth as a child on Phantasy Star IV, I’d say it’s not really that hard. Your criticism’s are valid for sure, but as long as you are properly leveled it’s pretty easy. It hasn’t aged well at all though. Especially the inventory system. It’s god awful.
It's been a while since I went through the Growlancer series, but I remember speed being super important. The knife throwing characters were always my main tool for surviving. With Phantasy Star IV, you can force specific turn order by using macros. Characters will always go in the order you list them in the macro. This is also the way to intentionally perform combo attacks. Two drawbacks, though: you have to set up the macro ahead of time; and it might slow down your initiative, often letting the enemies go before you. I'm totally with you on Star Ocean 2. I got to the final dungeon, decided I needed at least another 20 levels to beat the game, and just said, "screw it, I don't got the time for all that." I would like to finally beat that game some day...
Fate Extra give you a way of cheese the bosses but is quite tricky, you have to find hints on the school, dungeons and talk to random npcs at certain times that give you information about the enemy identity, once you got enough information the boss pattern for 3 o 4 moves is revealed on combat.
The hardest part of Chrono Cross was getting the true ending by having the right order of elements. Lavos kinda begins casting them in order, and you'll take a turn casting one, then he'll cast the next correct one... sometimes.
I remember a story when I played Star Ocean 2 in the PSX. Possibly a glitch, but I ended the Final Boss with one hit from Precis. Shook the heck out of me, but glad to see the end credits. Wasn't able to recreate the glitch since.
@@nawee242 no i never guarded in the game ever. I crushed that last boss the fastest out of any last boss in any game. IT was honestly like 2 hits dead
Oh god i love your reaction for Growlanser 2 Erick and i'll take up the mantle in playing Growlanser Generations all over again when i get the down time
Really enjoying this channel :) btw the reason these hard rpg are your favourites is because you played them more as harder so you remember them more than the easy rpg that you completed in no time at all and hence have less memories of :)
star ocean 2 and growlanser 2 were a couple of my all time favorite ps2 games. love the list. rogue galaxy made my “ain’t gonna ever finish” list for the reasons you mentioned.
you can't go back once you enter the final level of star ocean 2??? actually you must go to the final save before the final boss, save, return to fun city and start some quests to the secret dungeon.
I actually found SMTIII:Nocturne even harder than growlanser II, I mean it is frustrating but it takes time. While I had to grind to get one skill to defeat a certain fiend.
Hey Erick, great list! One thing I've noticed since I started watching your videos is that of all the times you have included Phantasy Star 4 on a list you have never brought up how fantastic a quality of life improvement the macros were in that game. I find it quite disappointing that macros didn't become a genre standard in turn based RPGs after that, since I played over 100 JRPGs before getting around to Phantasy Star 4 and it's like every dev just ignored that it ever existed :-( Keep up the great work!
I also love the Talk feature in the game. If you take a long break and didn't remember exactly what to do next in the game the characters would just tell you that!
That final boss for Growlanser II was one that made me work for it. One of the tricks I used was this technique called Berserk. it is a defense for damage trade off that I found necessary to win with the time limit.
I adore Star Ocean 2. Beaten it seeral times now and every time I went back i got a little further in the Cave of Trials each playthrough. My last one I beat the hole dungeon finally and all I have left is the Boss from the instrument you get from the final floor of that dungeon. Thats the real hardest boss of the game. Its such a great game with so much depth & a great cast. Yuu can dupe level up items up to level 99 in the first disc & breeze through the game, or play it straight up & have a nice challenge. Def one of my top PSx gems. It rewards you for investing into all the systems it has to offer.
Great channel and video. I saw you mentioned Disgaea in your previous video. Im at the end of the first one and havent started the second one yet. Having completed 3,4 and 5, the first one is definately giving me the most trouble. From playing 3,4 and 5 I thought that the series was much easier than alot of other rpgs with all the options you have at your disposal like the item world and voting to change certain stats and item levels. I havent messed with the item world much in the first game but may have to. The later stages have alot of puzzle elements as well as my characters feeling weak despite being over level 50 from what I remember. I may need to grind more or spend more time in the item world. I never had many roadblocks in the other 3 I beat.
I LOVE Stella Deus. I still have my PS2 copy:D I never expected that to make any lists, but I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves by someone. Amazing game.
Game that I considered hell trying to beat was Etrian Odyssey 5. Trying to reach the final floor and defeating the superboss is just hell. I also had so many retry to the point that it took almost a week for me to beat.
Aww...Chrono Cross. I do love that game but I hear you completely man! Miguel in the Dead Sea is honestly the character who gave me the most trouble. As much as I love a party consisting of Lynx and Harle, having two black element characters in that battle is a BAD idea.
WOW...thanks Erick for the Radiant Dawn localization news. Never knew about it and it explains why Radiant Dawn is the only F.E. I haven't beaten. I was able to get to the last level but was under level. I found the switch in main story characters a bit annoying since I was saving the experience to drastically level up some characters outside of map scenes.
14:30 ... what the hell you are on about? To unlock access the bonus dungeon, you have to save at the last save point and walk out of the final dungeon. Its not a point of no return, my dude, just a little bit of extra time. I love Star Ocean 2 and, don't get me wrong since its endgame and (technically) postgame are absolutely ridiculous spikes in difficulty, but false info is false info.
Hi Erick Landon i love all your jrpg content very much. If it's can happen I want you to put a name of game when you use it footage for every video that you're doing so on because some game footage really interesting but I can't find a clue which game it is lmao
lol the growlanser part. after few mission i do realize Dash is one of a must knack and seeing wien on the video dont have it in sabotage mission......my condolences man
I love Star Ocean 2 and have played many times including the psp port but every single time once I get to expel and have to go to all the dungeons to collect whatever (I forget) I lose all my gas and set it down. I plan to for sure finish if they ever release a "Star Ocean Second Evolution R" for the Switch.
One of the top games I had trouble with was Destiny of an Emperor on NES. Most of the game had great progression and many of the difficulties you faced were fair, however, later in the game you start dealing with people who can cast "An Sha" which is auto-kill, or in better terms, a Death spell, and if casted by the right enemies it can hit almost every time. Controllers were thrown!
Yeah, Star Ocean 2 Boss is tricky, I figured out that you have to switch all Charakters to melee once his HP is below 50%. Thats the only way I was able to catch him.
If you know how to exploit item creation and pickpocketing, you can completely break Star Ocean:The Second Story. For example, you can get near-end game weapons before you even get to the second world.
With Growlanser III I grinded so much I was level 60, using the fighting arena as a way to get all possible skills. And I kept doing this over and over again for 3 hours until I got up to a ridiculously high level and high stats that made the final boss extremely easy.
I suppose I can be proud to say I beat all seven storylines in SaGa Frontier. Including the one where you must fight the Ringlord, who can't be killed, only entertained with constant high level combos until he agrees to give you his ring. And the Asellus story where, like with Romancing SaGa, you can doom your entire file since several of the bosses simply show up and attack you after you travel between areas a certain number of times. AND the T260G one where the final bosses' main attack requires an all-robot team to survive... but the boss may also sometimes use Magnetic Storm, which is a near guaranteed kill against robots. Still fun, just incredibly taxing in some places.
Think i got an idea for a video for you since its October. Why not list your top 10 holloween video games. Or every week for ocotober why not talk about an holloween game? Its also the holidays as well. Also thanks for the awesome videos as well greatly enjoy every video i watch from you.
Regarding Chrono Cross and money, most people get rid of the purse to get 3 irons, which is a terrible idea. The purse grants you extra money and your early game armor gets outdated anyway so I wouldn't sacrifice it.
The only way i made it through Rogue Galaxy's final areas was just spamming items because so many things just start one-two shotting you even with some of the best equipment.
oh, and the final boss of star ocean have a even more powerfull version if you complete a seris of sidequests spanning the entire game. the difficult final boss turn into a extremely almost impossible final boss that can be defeated almost only breaking the battle system using specific combinations of armors and weapons.
Did you beat Star Ocean 2's last boss with the limiter off (harder) or either of the higher settings? From the footage it looked like you didn't even get Claude's best weapon.
I played Star Ocean 2 on PSP and never beat it because I couldn't get passed the boss fight where you fight the main boss two goons, I think it's one of the clips you showed, luckily I had a save file outside of that area so maybe I'll fire up the old psp and grind out some levels and finally kick their ass.
I found it far easier to level all characters to level 255 and acquire all skills. Then the game boss was easy as piss. The hardest bit was navigating the bonus dungeon on the PSX, as the blasted game kept crashing.
I've bought the remaster of Chrono Cross for PS4 and I HOPE to be able to play and finish it at some point, but the only time I've tried it I didn't really understand the combat although it's not THAT hard, but I was young, didn't know much english so it was even harder for me.
I remember struggling so much on the later bosses on Star Ocean 2 but the final boss wasn't too bad for me on my first playthrough. Honestly, the game felt a little too easy at times. The second playthrough on the other hand, man he was a pain. Granted I played the PSP version where I selected the harder difficulty, so I don't know if the orginal was that hard or not. However, it took me about 10 tries to beat the boss and it felt so satisfying.
I've beaten Star Ocean 2 several times now, like 11-13 times in 22 years.(Still haven't seen all the endings to this date) The game is easy if you ran the party composition of Claude/Opera/Bowman or Ernest/Chisato. The idea behind it is to spam their multiple hitting killer moves(in 1-2 seconds) that doesn't move the characters like Claudes Dragon's Breath, Opera's α shot, Bowman's Poison Pills or Ernest's Broken Heart, and Chisato's Tear Gas. Those moves with a boxed positioning, alongside the Counter combat skill, will stunlock everything including the Fairy Queen from the Cave of Trials. Star Ocean 2 is still my number 1 favorite JRPG of all time. As much as I love Ashton or Dias as a character, their movesets without those multiple hitting killer moves(without moving) made me choose Opera/Bowman/Ernest/Chisato over them anytime. Casters are good for lower levels but once you've mastered the cheese tactic, healers are not even needed even for the Fairy Queen.
Rogue Galaxy was wierd as long as I had a ton of healing items (which always had enough money to do so and have to be quick to heal alot) it was easy as can be. If you ran low on healing items or were not quick on healing it is unbearably hard! Anyway beat it without codes which I normally do
Growlanser wasn't easy, but it was fair. You could use the enemies' own tactics against them. I loved the additional objectives though. It was so nice to have fights that weren't 'wipe the map'.
I got to last leader and did in fact save over my file and got stick on the leader and to top it off my game kept freezing ...i wish someone would just tell me how it ends it's been like 20 years now lol
Sense of Justice, more like lack of sense....of balance. Nice list, need to try Growlanser series, currently knee deep in Legend of Heroes, hopefully they get a remaster down the line or something, otherwise I'll have to dive into ebay to feed my RPG addiction. Could be worse......
WTF I DIDN’T know that about radiant dawn no wonder me and my friends back in 2012 spent like 12 hours getting through some of those middle game acts pre unlocking and upgrading Ike.
chrono cross is not only on bosses, bosses give you growth and then you can gain status , after obtaining growth you will satrt to randomly get status boost on random battles, it tends to do with your actions , the first couple of growth will give a ton of status, but later will not immediate , only by battling and progressing. woah, even star ocean 2? and not even in universe difficult? without limiters? damn. One game series i never finished is xenosaga, i got so burn , bored, and annoyed after episode 1 , that i never wanted to finish it . SO much grind as well.
UNG_God I’m in the middle of episode 2 right now. Yeah get an online walkthrough. No sane person in this world would do all those side quests without one. Also find an enemy that you can steal skill upgrade Es from. Then run away after the steal then repeat. Building up your characters skills this way may be tedious, but the reward of having a ton of skills helps you out in advancing in the game very much. And yes grinding does help too. The skill that adds MP when you stock is VERY much a must have for all your characters in this game.
These are the JRPGs that you need to be like the Cautious Hero. Before going into the first story based dungeon, LEVEL GRIND to level 10 or level 20. Before going into the 5th story based dungeon, LEVEL GRIND to level 50 or level 60. Therefore getting to the end of the game would be easier as long as you level grind early, providing there is no time limit in the first place that could screw you over.
okay i seriously dont know whether these games are as hard as you're saying but i just laughed my ass off watching this video hearing your thoughts about it. LOL
The final boss on Star Ocean 2 is a freaking troll. I spent hours and hours to beat him. He moves very fast and randomly, dodgind every attack I made, giving him time to make his special move that kill al my party in one hit... W T F! I almost give up...
@@mooserocka522 If you catch an early Private Action in a city you have no reason to go to, you can accidentally activate the final boss's super mode. He's a pain in the ass with that, moves crazy fast, and tends to oneshot characters. He's about as bad or worse than the superboss at the bottom of the optional dungeon.
SMT is hard, but my actual hardest was probably any of the Etrian Odyssey series, but the one that destroyed my soul was Grandia 2 on hard mode. There is one certain boss that may be the most unfair boss I've ever fought in any game, the fact that I won was nothing short of a miracle.
@@si-level No actually, it was the body. I had to cheese the hell out of it because I was not only unprepared and unable to go back but I had no clue how to best deal with the two arms that hit like a truck. I had to keep them asleep which meant spamming sleep since it wasn't even guaranteed to work.
lol remember playing growlancer 3 monica's a beast when she get's the right ring that increase her range the game became super easy. Growlance 2 I don't recall having a problem with missions... the they distribute the exp that was the problem
The Romancing Saga games are notoriously difficult. The games are good but so damn hard, also as mentioned very easy to not know where you are supposed to be going.
Huh. I didn't know that about Radiant Dawn. I played it on Hard (at least if memory serves) and didn't have any trouble, but I kind of hated the controls using a Wiimote and kind of lost interest. Of course, I have a problem with every Fire Emblem that doesn't let you grind. I'm the kind of "I have to max stats" perfectionist, and Fire Emblem makes that a massive chore. Awakening is one of my favorites precisely because it's not an issue there.
star ocean was fucking hard. i remember beating it when i was a kid but goddamn i swear if i decided to replay it again, i would not beat it without a guide.
