Resonance of Fate was actually quite a big deal. It's an amazing game once you manage to grasp it. Its characters were even featured in the Project X Zone games!

Knew The Last Remnant and Resonance of Fate had to be mentioned 😂 The complexity of TLR is what got me to stop playing the game, and honestly, if it wasn’t for my brother explaining it to me (he never played it but saw me struggle with it and somehow understood the mechanics), then I never would’ve finished RoF. It’s actually an enjoyable game when you understand what’s going on.
@@lfishl22 the pc version is the improved(fixed) version, you can change union commanders and choose which attacks and spells will be active so the weaker old skills no longer pop up in combat.
I found last remnant pretty easy, resonance of fate on the other hand, was very hard to make it all click but once you do it's super enyojable and easy. (ironically, the game is the hardest at the start since you don't have a lot of shards to make the running moves)
For me, it was when I got to this HUGE battle where I fought a huge fight outside a castle, then another huge fight in the castle, and at the end a boss fight (all with no save)…..and that boss used a move called “iron will” and proceeded to have like 10 straight attacks and wiped all my squads. Never touched it again after that….no way was I gonna do that whole fight again (took hella long to fight though all the BS before the boss)just to have the boss pull some BS cheesy move and kill my whole party(s). Horseshit. I was so mad I STILL remember it even though I only played it once.
The last remnant i played in xbox 360.. got my ass whooped pretty bad, had to stop play it, difficulty spike like crap.. when i play on the ps4 version(similar like PC version).. i was able to beat it though, even the hidden bosses and plat the game.. maybe i was too young too understand the game mechanics😂. The resonance of fate, shit this game is wayy to complex(i spent my time mostly customize the gun) but sucks when battle kicks in. Story are quirky and fun though..

Knew Knights in the Knightmare would win the moment I read the title. You can tell the devs started the process of game design with the idea of making the most complex system possible, asked every dev to come up with at least 3 ideas, and then made sure to incorporate every single one into the game.
I never played natural doctrine yet, but want to try it, and suspect it may be worse. I actually finished knights in the nightmare and didn't think it was too bad for me to e njoy (and I f inished it, and th en again for the true ending cuz I liked it enough, but the true ending is 'guide dang it' material. That said a few years ago my family (including my less-gamer brother 6 years older t han me) had to move and after we finished neither of us had our pcs. I had a few handhelds and he had none, and h e asked if he could borrow my 3ds and if Knights in the nightmare was a good game to try (as a casual gamer, which he is). I laughed so hard in his face lol.
Tales of Zestria deserves some special mention for it's convoluted as fuck gear fusion system. 90% of the time, I don't know what the hell I'm doing with it.
I loved the Last Remnant, both the OG and fixed version. I guess the machanics just clicked with me becuase they're actually really simple. It's more about how you visualize it. Yeah seeing it as controlling 15 characters is overwhelming. But if they're in 3 groups of 5, it's really just 3 "characters" with 5 actions they'll perform in a turn. And the random actions aren't really random, the choices you get are based on how you put together each group and then on how you play. 5 healers in a group will get lots of healing options, 5 mages lots of magic, if you pick melee attack a lot then you'll also get lots of melee attack options, 5 healers that you pick melee attack a lot with- well you got you're fighter/healer "character." One last thing that tripped people up, is learning how to revive fallen groups, you need to buy consumables for abilities you don't have but want to learn. You need to use item healing to enough times to learn the revive skill but if you don't have the 2 consumable items in your inventory that you need to perform revive then you'll never learn the skill.
I freaking love Resonance of Fate, the world of Basel, the characters, the story, the writing, the dub, the combat, the overworld map, etc. Definition of a cult classic for me. Its so unique!! It's mind boggling to me that it is in that list and that you hate it on top of it. To each his on I guess...
IMHO it would have been WAY better as an action game. the game's biggest strength is the artstyle and the insane acrobatic gunplay, the convoluted turn based combat system and hex map building just get in the way.
@@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz You can definitely play it as one if you know what you're doing, most enemy attacks outside of AOE's and Melee (Even some Melee) straight up can't hit you if you choose to activate an attack during them, so if you take the time to build your guns around charge speed, you can just get in those positions that allow you to absolutely mow down enemies at your own pace 👀
The last remnant needed to explain itself a bit better, there is a mini map in battles, so when you try to gang up on a target, if there is another in between they will get intercepted, but they didn't explain this well. When it comes to not having direct control of what they do makes sense but again they did not explain. Essentially, you are the commander giving demands to your various unions or platoons, so it makes sense you do not control everyone individually, but only when you know this. The think I was most confused about was your battle rank and stats level up differently and separately, it nearly made it impossible for me to progress at one point, but I ended up winning a really long battle only because in my unions, some members were killed, and as the unions HP is communal, AoE attacks hit less times and I could survive and ultimately win

I loved Resonance of Fate. Young teenaged me got hold of its battle system really quickly, and I just took off with it. I loved the main trio, especially Leanne, and I always looked forward to the chapter cutscenes. I actually have a hard time empathizing with people who struggle with understanding the systems, because to me they appeared so very straightforward, dare I say even intuitive. About halfway through the game I was machinegun farming larger enemies, just for the fun of it. (That will make sense to anyone who remembers / understands the knockup, smackdown and bonus mechanics.) When I picked up the 4K remaster, I sort of expected that I would be less impressed by it, seeing it again as an adult. I was incorrect. I love it just as much today as I did then.
Knights in the Nightmare is overall the best game I have ever played. It may have an atrocious barrier but breaking that barrier feels awesome. The way the projectiles are made feel like an actual shoot em up where you can dodge them without much reliance on reflex. But yeah I can understand why people can't get into it and I will just accept that I am the weird one here. Heck, I don't even consider that game an rpg.

I do recommend giving the Switch version of The World Ends With You a try. It straight up removes the partner's screen and makes them a summon so you can focus on Neku. I haven't played it yet but of what I've seen and read about it, it seems to be one of the most confusing jrpgs ever made. I've thought about giving it a shot if I see it for cheap one day. Also one I have played that confused the hell out of me at first, and still kind of does is the first Mugen Souls game on PS3. Way too much shit to remember. Lol. Still a fun fan service game but overly complex for sure
BR management is highly crucial for character growth if you played the original version of the last remnant so you have the stats to effectively push thru the combat being thrown at you. Morale control and good flanks is the key to winning even the hardest bosses as well. I love that game, sad to hear it didn't work out for you
I barely played Resonance of Fate when it came out but never forgot about it... glad I finally got around to playing it again as I ended up loving it and the story is awesome in the most bonkers of ways.
Loved the game to death, but Legend of Mana's forging system in particular is the most "fuck you, good luck with that" gimmick I ever found in a RPG. Zero explanation about how it works, ends up being trial and error with dozens of materials, including VERY RARE ones. But at least it's not mandatory for completing the game's normal difficulty.

I had to read an FAQ for Vagrant Story before I became a master blacksmith wielding infinite combos on my hapless victims. As for Yggdra Union, I thought the in game tutorial was exaggerating about the bonus attacks. But I soon realized if I didn’t make use of it, I’d have to rage quit from all the extra attacks the computer was doing to me. I had to replay battles a lot but I eventually beat it. Resonance of Fate is amazing! I played the heck out of it back when it came out on PS3 years ago! I remember finishing it too but it's been so long. I still have my original copy, I should try to play it again. I only vaguely remember the story. ^^;
Have you ever tried this early PS3 RPG called Cross Edge? I have never seen an RPG with more gauges and meters and numbers and bars that fill up all on one screen at the same time. The game was started to get harder after getting halfway through it and I didn't understand the systems enough to make up for it.
TWEWY was a great game with an interesting battle system. I also found there’s a steep learning curve, but once you get used to it you sorta get into this flow of bouncing back and forth from Neko and his partner that‘s pretty addictive. Also the pin evolution system helps gives some depth beyond conventional leveling (though the original DS version has some pins level up best or evolve by connecting wirelessly to other players which was very annoying). The switch version includes the option of co-op where P1 controls Neko and P2 controls the partner, which makes it great for going through the story with a friend. Also, they added quality of life improvements like redoing the pin levelling system. I think it’s natural that Erick wouldn’t like TWEWY’s battle system; it’s very experimental and sorta expects you get better on your own terms, which I understand puts off some people. TWEWY Neo has the great story and mechanics of the original game, but has a more conventional ARPG type of combat that effectively emulates the flow of the first game, if you looking for something similar but was put off by the combat.
OG TWEWY' combat system was more thematic than functional. I got used to it by the second week of the game and it was great, but it is quite hard to get into it. I don't understand why could Sting! stick to a system like Riviera's one. That one was simple and yet pretty engaging.

You didn't even mention Last Remnant's biggest problem, that bing it's awful level scaling system, but maybe you didn't play far enough to even notice it was happening. It's been a long time, so I don't remember the exact details of how it works, but basically the game tracks all the individual levels of your characters and lumps them into an aggregate total score, which it then scales enemies to. The problem with this is obviously if you allow some characters to fall behind, they end up getting one-shot by enemies, and they will only gain xp when alive, so it gets harder and harder to catch up groups that are trailing the leaders. But the other thing that matters is characters stat growth is based on what skills they use, aka use magic and their magic gets stronger, use physical and that gets stronger, etc. If you screw this part up, your characters' actual stats will fall behind what they should be at a given level, as in a level 20 group that is weak as hell because of bad stat leveling compared to an optimized level 20 group whose stats are focused. Finally the biggest problem with this: You can't even just play through at a low level, because bosses have a level floor, which they will not scale below, thus forcing you to level up, but those same bosses will still scale up if you're above that floor. And said bosses are balanced to require multiple groups engaging them at once, and if one or more of your groups are trailing in level/stats, they just get one-shot and makes the fight that much harder. One of the best parts of the PC version was a mod that disables the level scaling, fixing enemy stats at whatever setting you install, so you can set them to their lowest scaling for an easy game, with a lot of options going up to the max possible scaling, and then several custom options boosting their stats up to 800% if you're really masochistic.
As weird as the combat system is in Resonance of Fate, the game’s humor more than makes up for it. This game was much funnier than I expected, and I learned about it thanks to a clip of that one woman eating meat and having a foodgasm! Seriously, it’s second only to God Hand in the comedy department for me.

Great vid. This could easily be a series as there is no shortage of overly complicated JRPGs out there. Most of these I've either played and agree with you, or intentionally avoided because I knew they were going to be obnoxious. TWEWY was fantastic, though. Astral Chain flew under my radar and looks awesome. I will check that out. I liked Riviera but it stressed me with its missables. Yggdra Union was brutally hard and I tapped out early on. I bought the DS and PSP Knights in the Nightmare, but never opened either as I suspected the experience would be homework-y after the aforementioned St!ng offerings. I think I mostly like uniqueness and complexity on paper, but not as much in practice. So I'll often buy these types of games because I want to reward developers brave enough to deviate from long-tired traditions, but too often they end up just not being all that fun to me unfortunately. I suspect if I was much smarter I'd probably get more out of them. :\
The leveling system almost soft locked me from being able to progress on The Last Remnant. I shit you not, I had to send my save file to the, perhaps, most skilled player of this game EVER, in order for them to adjust my characters' skills and gear so that I could START GRINDING PROPERLY. After very dozens of painful hours, I managed to beat the game along with some very tough optional bosses. Thank you, PinkPanther. At that time, I was in a very dark place in life, and beating this game was like my Moby Dick. Without your help, I wouldn't even be able to dream about beating it. You have no idea how much you helped me.
I swear back when i was a kid, i grasped the concept of battle system of Knights in the nightmare very quickly, i even managed to finish the whole game, i didn't think too much of it back then, but didn't realize everyone was having trouble playing it.
The Last Remnant is actually a favorite of mine for the unique combat system. It requires you to think about your unions/squads in a different way than you expect, though. While you manage each character individually out of combat, you need to always do so with an eye to what role they will play in their union and which of their abilities are going to match up with certain in-combat commands (which you can generally tell from the icon on the command). Basically, you want to specialize each character. A union composed entirely of very well-rounded, balanced characters with broad arrays of abilities will usually perform poorly because 1) everyone is just middling at everything, and 2) it's unclear what each character will do for a given command. If you focus them instead, a couple specialists will usually perform better than a whole union of generalists, and you can focus the union on whatever its overall focus is. And you do have to focus each union on a specialty, too. As for the morale bar, I never had any trouble with it. It does punish you for failing to engage the enemy at an advantage, but that's easier once you've started specializing your unions, that's not hard. Double-teaming an enemy right away with high-damage unions while a tanky union attracts attention is a great way to do it, and selecting commands that lean into a union's focus seems to give more morale benefit than normal, too.
I really like your videos but I would like them even more if they have timestamps. I want to skip the games I have already played but I have to skip 10 seconds back to back every time. Also I don’t always have the time to view the whole video so I would have loved to be able to see all the games with a glance and return to it for details later. Thank you 👍

Resonance of Fate is complicated? It's actually so simple that it's biggest drawback is that it's so repetitive. I don't remember if The Last Remnant's combat is complicated, but I do hate it's leveling system. It's one of those rpg that punishes you for trying to play the game.
Vagrant Story is amazing! It is definitely complex though, but I think it is very rewarding. There are a lot of layers to the combat and crafting system, but once you start understanding how it all works, the game becomes much easier. There was a great piece by Rob at Playstation Access not long ago, where he describes Vagrant Story as a difficult game to love, but if you put in the work, you will find a wonderful and masterfully crafted game with incredible storytelling, writing, atmosphere, and some of the greatest cinematics in gaming! Put another way, the game doesn't click with everyone, but for those it does, it clicks hard! For me, its an undeniable masterpiece! Maybe once it gets its well overdue remake/remaster, with some QoL improvements, give it another shot. :)
I really wonder if there was a bugged version before they released a fixed version because in my first (and only) playthrough back in 98 or 99, whatever I did late in the game (equipping other weapons or forging one), I only did 1 point of damage to almost all enemies with physical attacks. I completed the game by performing combos with an almost perfect timing since every successful physical attack in a combo doubled my damage or something. So first attack I did 1, then 2, then 4, then 8, then 16... Maybe it was the effect of a skill I equipped. I beat the last boss like this too, that was such a slog... So yeah, either my version of the game was bugged or I REALLY didn't understand the system at all. It's amazing that I could still finish the game.
@@armorvil I've never heard of anything about a bugged version or update to the game, so I doubt it. I got the game on day-one, so I played it right on release. But I struggled as well on my first playthrough, but on subsequent playthroughs I was able to better understand the systems and how to properly craft gear. I replayed the game a few years ago actually and didn't have too many problems. If I recommend the game to anyone these days, I usually suggest they use a guide. It's one thing Square Enix could improve in a remake or remaster -- keep the complexity and depth, but make it a bit more approachable and not so obtuse.
Well, Tokyo Twilight is not so hard. At the beginning, when you don't have good roster and understand of some ghosts patterns - sure, it can be hard. But the more you play, the more try different things, the easier things becames. Well, not at the two last chapters, those are pretty hard. And yes, those reaction affects the game. Why do many people says, the Resonance of Fate is hard and have difficult battle system? It's pretty easy and neet.Use SMG, than HG, add Molotov for burst, cross links between characters and don't attack head-on. Yeah, bosses need strategy, but... it's normal. Most are pretty easy as long as you are understanding, when you need to shoot. Natural Doctrine... okay, I LIKE this game. It's hard, sometimes (final boss and more) brutally. The thing I don't understand is... people enjoy dying in DS, saying it's fair (while it's not that fair), but here that shout how difficult it is. Yes, this game punish you for being too rush, one-man army, bad positioning, bad resource management... but, here the thing: we are just people, against mostly monsters or other people who has upper hand in numbers. Yes, the game tells you it right from the start: you are just a human, and those guys want you dead, they are cunning, strong and have numbers... THINK! THINK TWICE! Don't rush. Any mistake and you face your end. But still, fights are fun. Is this the only way to win? How can I tackle this room? What is the better choice? Is this chest worse the risk? Yes, every room, every place is one part of the big puzzle and when you start solving it... it can give you many good moments. Still, prapare to restart often.
Last Remnant is actually pretty forgiving until you reach Gates Of Hell (that's the boss' name). He will stomp you and will teach you the games mechanics the hard way, once you figure it out everything clicks and the battle system makes perfect sense and is quite manageable. But yes, that particular boss is a big skill check meant to prepare you for what is coming next. Consider me amog the fans of this game.
they were just… ducking around. loved the vagrant story include; my understanding is that even during development there was an assertion that their game had an unconventional learning and enjoyment curve.
Back in the PS1 era, if it said "Square" on the box, I bought it, no questions asked. The only time I regretted that decision was with Vagrant Story. It was just too complicated for me to get into.
Feels like a lot of these mistook complexity for depth. Coincidentially, the first Ogre Battle on the SNES was equally baffling with its alignment, charisma and reputation stats. I remember renting Vagrant Story and getting stuck on a golem boss. No matter what part of it I targeted, I could never do any more than 1 damage to it while it does big damage to Ashley, and this is before you can learn any offensive magic.

I've played a bunch of Tokyo Twilight - Ghost Hnters and there are a bunch of achievements related to the 'Sense' system, not to mention a subtle relationship mechanic. I think the English version suffers from some tranlsation errors and there is a sudden difficulty spike about 75% of the way through but you're right, once you get the hang of it, it's not bad to play.
VP2 Silmeria is indeed a masterpiee. Too bad the new Valkyrie Profile didn't live up to it. It seems fun enough, but nothing too special. Edit: I actually finished Knights in the Nightmare (DS version) many years ago. I remember enjoying it but yes, it was pretty convoluted. Also the true/good ending was utterly impossible to achieve without a guide. Playing it normally would just dump into the bad ending. Yikes.
The last remnant wasn't really that random at all, I think you just didn't understand the combat system(most people didn't, there really wasn't much of an explanation). Truly a hidden gem on the 360 that was also massively improved with the PC and PS4 remasters.
Never had any problem with 'world end with you', i've never bothered with the partner section except for sync attack, i've only focus on MC alone and finish the game without any problem. With Last Remnant, i've only meet your problem once, then i stopped to train and upgrade, after that, i've never meet that problem again. Tokyo Twilight ... true, i beat the game while not even understand half of it, especially dialogue choices PS: Kight in the nightmares ... one of the very few i give up, live up to its name :D
Haha, yes! I knew The Last Remnant would make the list. I feel the same way. Game was so close the great, It just wasn't polished. The combat was..... Lacking. If it wasn't for those quick time events (that you could turn off). Late game you could set up the combat and just walk away from the game for 5-10mins waiting for the next turn.
I enjoyed The Last Remnant and have bought and played it multille times. Unfortunately I always get stuck in this annoyingly long gauntlet of fights somewhere around 15 hours in and quit. Also it came out around the same time as a jrpg called Infinite Undiscovery so those two games are paired in my mind.
Vagrant story could REALLY make use of the persona style crafting... also, in the Last Remnant... I tried to get back into it and had abysmal luck to start... I actually died in the tutorial fight. Do you think the battle restarted? No, I had to go through the entire story bit up to that point again.
I actually enjoyed Natural Doctrine a lot. Definitely obtuse moments in the campaign, but online was really fun. I can't recall many tactical rpgs with coop/versus multiplayer.
I played Resonance of Fate during my deep alcoholic drinking, I'm glad to hear it was generally considered complex. Now sober I'm going to give it another go.
Out of all these, Astral Chain is the only one I have. Too bad Resonance of Fate is needlessly complex, looks interesting. The fact the female character doing acrobatic move while wearing a dress, more please.
To be honest TLR PC (and remastered) version make it more easier to play with some big twist in gameplay. You just mention battle system, but quest system with a lot of side quest and a ton of them can be missed without notice is also make me rage quit around 5-6 times in years before finally beat it. It is true that when you understand almost everything (and read a lot on wiki), it made me addicted to, but the pain is still there For Resonace of Fate, I love the battle system, but the grid world map is ...yes, I totally agree with you.
Once you learn how the systems in TLR work - the game becomes extremely addicting and fun to play. The combat system is perfectly fine and not random, it's just not explained properly.

I found vagrant story to be really simple actually, every fight is just focusing on weapon type/element/attack type weakness then going to town with rotating between two attacks with at least one of the skills that gives back mana with occasional healing, makes it very hard to die. The crafting is silly though and I don't even think the developers understood it.
My brother's girlfriend bought Resonance of Fate and eventually asked if I wanted it as she couldn't even figure out how to play it. I finally learned the system and abused the weapon mods to make it much easier. Plot was also just kind of bizarre, but I finished it nonetheless just to say I did.
