I know a list like this is incredibly difficult to make, but I think Bekele deserves more than an honorable mention. Dominated the 5k and 10k for several years a with lots of gold medals and world records, and his dominance in cross country was unreal as well. He might not be as dominant on the roads, but still holds one of the fastest marathon times ever. If Edwin Moses is on this list, then Eliud Kipchoge deserves to be right the with him for his unbelievable dominance in the marathon. Obviously the marathon just doesn’t allow for someone to rack up a 100+ consecutive win streak like Moses had, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive.

Paavo Nurmi won the 5.000 and the 1.500 in the Olympics of 1924. Within AN HOUR of each other. Both in new world records!

Kenenisa BEKELE should have be in the list!!!!

What about Jan Zelezney, the only athlete to throw more than 95 meters with the new type of javelin, which he did three times breaking multiple world records and having at least 4 throws farther then the second best in history.

I've had the priviledge of actually watching many of them in action from the 60's on and competing against some of them. (I damn near needed binoculars to see them at the race finish. Ha!)

Paavo Nurmi must have been a great athlete but you have to realise he didn't have to compete against any Kenyan or Ethiopians that now dominate many of his events.

Overall a solid list but Gebrselassie should be higher on the list. The man broke 27 world records, took the 5000m record from 12:56 to 12:39, and set the marathon record 2;03:59 when he was 35!

I think decathlete DALEY THOMPSON (Great Britain) and high jump extraordinaire IOLANDA BALAS (Romania) deserve to be included on this list. I realize people hate to acknowledge Socialist/Eastern Bloc athletes because of the grey cloud that hangs over them, but MARITA KOCH from East Germany is also worthy of this list. Performance enhancement has always been around and continues to exist, so you can't be biased.

Tirunesh in Amharic means something that translates to the "Good or Beautiful Girl". She must have been a sweet baby girl to get such a name. From the looks of it the beauty shows, thereby making the name quite suitable for her.

Very well made list. I did not have a doubt about number at all. Also others down the order are well placed. Really liked it, also because I have seen them all in competition besides Oerter. There are many athletes from different eras. Parry O'Brien, Lundquist, Jesse Owens, Sanejev, Blankers Koen etc. From those competing in last three decades, I would put on this Allyson Felix (countless streak of success) and Jan Zelezny (3x Olympic and 3x Wch gold medalist), WR holder for 23 years, 3 times came back from major injury to the top, 20years amongst discipline top athletes with medals earned between 1986-2006

The old timer can’t be number one when the East Africans weren’t competing at the time. The East Africans would have destroyed him easily just as they do with any top European now.

Kenya holds more IAAF world records than any other country in the world (22!), including the only human being to have ever run 2 miles in under 8 minutes (The Mount Everest of Olympics). But not a single one could grace this list? Impressive.

Although international competition was stopped by World War II, Blankers-Koen set several world records during that period, in events as diverse as the long jump, the high jump, and sprint and hurdling events. Apart from her four Olympic titles, she won five European titles and 58 Dutch championships, and set or tied 12 world records - the last, pentathlon, in 1951 aged 33. She retired from athletics in 1955, after which she became captain of the Dutch female track and field team. Here are some dominant athletes you forgot to mention...(1) Iolanda Balas of Romania (Women's High Jump) - Undefeated between 1957 and 1967 (154 consecutive competitions). 2 times Olympic Champion in 1960 and 1964, 2 times European Champion in 1958 and 1962. In her era, the European Championships were more or less the equivalent of the World Championships. The only non-European world power in women's track at that time was the U.S. And there was no credible U.S. female top tier high jumper in that era. She also set 14 world records. I'm disappointed you failed to mention her. She's easily in the top 3.(2)Viktor Saneyev of the Soviet Union (Men's Triple Jump):- 3 times Olympic Champion (1968, 1972 and 1976), narrowly missed winning gold in 1980 (won silver). 2 times European Champion (1969 and 1974), also set multiple world records

Ron Clarke of Australia had a number of world records including 12 WRs in 18 meets during a 44-day European tour in 1965. He also had another world record the same year in a 10,000m race in Finland that wasn't ratified because the meet directors requested permission to have the meet too late. Although he famously never won Olympic Gold, he was a hugely successful athlete - I wonder if his accomplishments were assessed when making up this list?

Bekele would have been a double double champion was it not for another multiple world record holder in Hicham El Gerrouj who beat him over the 5000 in Sydney 2004. He was unbeaten over 10,000 for 8 years and was quite frankly unbeatable during that time (just ask Eliud Kipchoge and Zerzene Tadese). Both he and El Gourrouj deserve to be on this list evidenced by the fact they both still own 2 world records each. Hicham El Guerouj not in the top 10 is simply unfair. He owned the 1500 for over a decade, 83 wins, 4 times world champions in a row. He even beat Gebrselassie in 97 in 1500 race and of course the famous win over Bekele and Kipchoge in Athens in the 5000.

You cannot leave out Herb Elliot that great Australian miler/1500 metre athlete.He ran in the middle to late 1950's and won the Gold in the 1960 Olympic 1500 mtrs.I n a mile race in Dublin (?) He lowered the mile record by 3 seconds from 3:57 to 3:54.He was never beaten over 1 mile or 1500 metres.He had achieved everything by the time he was 22 years of age and promptly retired.I have heard some (though not all) experts reckon that if all the world milers met each other in a time machine driven mile Herb Elliot would win.By the way he used to start his "kick" at the end of the third lap and wind it up inexorably to the finish.He is still with us and a very interesting man to listen to.

Kenenisa bekele is 3times olympic champion 4times world champion , the world record holder for both 5000m and 10000m and the 2nd fastest ever in marathon he was unbeatable from 2003-2010 in his all races in 10000m he has in total 27 olympic, world championship and cross country medals and 15of them are gold he should be in these list 100%

Where is Jan Zelezny? After the honorable mentions, I was certain he was going to be #1. If look at the all-time top throws in the men's javelin, he has the top 4 throws, and 6 of the top 10 throws, and the second best thrower is over 4 meters behind him. Imagine any other event if the #2 athlete was over 4% behind the WR: Michael Johnson's #2 400m time would be 44.87. Barshim's #2 high jump would be 2.35. Gebrselassie's #2 5k would be 13:10.

Carl Lewis and Edwin Moses ranked over Ussain Bolt? Come on man, you must be a gringo! The events at wich Bolt was so incredibly dominant are probably the most difficult in track and field events! The amount of athletes who train for the 400 mts. hurdles are probably less than 1/10th of those who try the dash sprints! What Bolt did was not only incredible, it was impossible and yet he did it.

Michael Johnson wasn't the first or only male to win the 200 and 400 in the same olympics. Astylos of Croton (Mt Olympus 488BC) and Leonidas of Rhodes (Mt Olympus 164BC) both did it 2400 years before Johnson. And the women beat him as well. Valerie Brisco Hooks (Los Angeles 1984) and Marie Jose Perec (Atlanta 1996, about 40 minutes before Johnson)
