For Halloween 2015 we took a look at the best movie monsters of all time. And now, years later, we’d like to do things a little differently. Instead of sorting cinema’s greatest creatures, beasts and killers by what kind of monster they are, we’re looking at how they make you feel. How are movie monsters designed to elicit emotions from the audience? From disgust to awe to mystery and everything in between, or at least 7 other things in between, here are the top 10 Movie Monsters of All Time, re-listed.
Starting out with the fear of death in films like The Ring, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Cabin in the Woods to the many other flavors of fear on film in the gothic and terrifying Bram Stoker’s Dracula or the silent and agoraphobic A Quiet Place, cinematic monsters have wreaked emotional havoc of one kind or another for over 100 years. The original sympathetic Universal Monsters like Gill Man or Frankenstein’s monster are the ancestors of Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water or District 9. While existential dread in Donnie Darko or The Witch or Under the Skin has made modern horror a truly robust genre.
This list was written by Billy Jackson and edited by Clint Gage.
The List:
00:28 - Fear of Death - The Xenomorph - Alien - dir. Ridley Scott (1979)
03:12 - Fear of Something Else - Pazuzu - The Exorcist - dir. William Friedkin (1973)
05:31 - Disgust - The Cenobites - Hellraiser - dir. Clive Barker (1987)
07:39 - Existential Dread - The Thing - dir. John Carpenter (1982)
09:56 - Mystery - Bruce, the Shark - Jaws - dir. Steven Spielberg (1975)
11:44 - Awe - The Balrog - Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring & The Two Towers - dir. Peter Jackson (2001-2)
13:42 - Humor - Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man - Ghostbusters - dir. Ivan Reitman (1984)
15:35 - Metaphor - Godzilla - dir. Ishiro Honda (1954)
17:26 - Sympathy / Empathy - Seth Brundle - They Fly - dir. David Cronenberg (1986)
19:42 - Are We The Monster? - The Beast - La Belle et la Bete - dir. Jean Cocteau (1946)

Hey Everyone, Clint here. I wanted to apologize for some movie credits that have been mis-dated. RU-vid has a new-ish function that autogenerates chapter titles "when available and eligible" (whatever that means). So the wrong release dates on the movies in the chapter titles weren't us. But we (humans) are not without fault. There were multiple movie credits that had incorrect release dates in the video itself. They're listed below with correct release years: Halloween (1978) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) The Blair Witch Project (1999) Mars Attacks! (1996) Slither (2006) We're trying out this new video editor, Clint, and while he's great at pontificating about arbitrary movie rankings, he's not great at dates. (History was not his favorite subject.)

I don't think you left him out but I wanted to know your opinion on where you think the Giant from the Iron Giant (1999) stands. He is a monster? Or would he be a being that shows us fear of the unknown is truly what makes us monsters, or something else? I'd love to hear your response!!!

@billyjackson00
@billyjackson00 Год назад
@@DerMoerpler Hey Tim, it depends on the list! Usually it starts with me making an enormous master list of like... 200+ of the best examples that fit the category, picking out my favorites, then looking for patterns that will eventually become the categories for each slot. Sometimes we'll poll the wider staff for their recommendations, too. From there, Clint will weigh in with things I've forgotten and which of my favorites he prefers/absolutely hates. Then there's an element of balancing all the picks to the different corners of the audience; we try not to be so inaccessible and obscure that people don't feel like we're honoring their favorite classics, but we also don't want to be so down-the-middle that we aren't exposing the audience to new work. We know we've gone too far in one direction or the other if ALL the complaints in the comments are calling us "too pretentious" or "too mainstream." We know we've hit the balance right if they're calling us both ;) Inevitably - whichever 10 we end up arriving at when we make our list - 1 or 2 of them will change last minute while I'm writing when I discover that one of the honorable mentions is cooler than one of the picks or that it fits the "overall thesis" of the list more. For me, the 10 we pick have always been more about "which 10 help us explore all the different facets of this concept" rather than "which are my absolute favorites." It's kindof a friendly fib that these are the "top" 10 rather than the "most interesting" 10, but I think we've tried to be pretty transparent about that over the years!

Another candidate for the number one slot of “Are We the Monsters” could easily be the arachnids from Starship Troopers, there insect like design and deliberate separation from anything resembling humans underscores the aspect of dehumanizing your enemy which is a large part of the film’s critique.

When he started talking about categories of fear I immediately thought of the Magnus Archives fear categories . I don’t think you can do it in a monster list but you can do it with movies in general. I think that would be a fun list to see. Some may be hard to find movies for and there can be a lot of overlap it would be interesting to see what movies they find. For those that don’t know the list is: The Eye - The fear of being watched, exposed, followed, having secrets exposed. Can also pertain to the drive to know and understand, even if your discoveries might destroy you. The Vast - The fear of heights, falling, and large open spaces including sky, space, and deep water. More broadly: the human fear of insignificance and meaninglessness, of losing oneself in too much space. The Lonely - The fear of isolation, of being completely cut off and alone or disconnected from the rest of society. The Desolation - The fear of pain, loss, burning, and destruction, especially with a senseless cause. The Corruption - The fear of corruption, disease, filth. Fear of the feelings of disgust, revulsion and the things or beings that might evoke such feelings. The Flesh - Born from the fear held by animals bred for meat, and in the human realisation that we are just animated meat and bones. The Stranger - The fear of the unknown, the uncanny, the unfamiliar. The creeping sense that something is not right. The Dark - The primal fear of the dark, of what lies beyond that we cannot see, and the creatures hiding from our view. The Buried - The fear of small spaces, suffocating, drowning, being buried alive. Fear of everything crashing down around/on oneself. Fear of being trapped without enough space. The Spiral - The fear of madness, that the world you know is wrong, that your mind is lying to you. Fear of deception, lying, deceiving of the mind and senses. The Web - The fear of being controlled or trapped, especially being unaware of one's own entrapment. The fear of being forced to do things against one's own will, of being manipulated. The Slaughter - The fear of unpredictable, unmotivated violence. The fear of pain coming at sudden, random moments. The End - The fear of death itself-uncaring and unstoppable. The Hunt - The animalistic fear of being chased or hunted; the primal fear of being prey. The Extinction - The fear of catastrophic change, destruction of nature, destruction of human skin and tissue, the destruction of humanity itself and its replacement by something different; all of this especially via mankind's own causing.

The line that gets me (though my kids never seem to see it as the scariest part) is when she counts. "One... Two... THREEEEEEE!" Besides being truly unhinged and her transformation as she says it, I think it triggers my old childhood fear of the kind of adult who may tell you nothing of what you are and are not allowed to do, then descends like a rockslide when you make a mistake because of it. Yeah, I knew some of those. So, the kind who seem to come down out of nowhere in a blind fury to grab you by the hand with a vice-like grip and chew you out in front of others for something relatively small that you never knew was wrong. That's what she speaks to. This one... this one seemed sweet until you didn't give her what she wanted and then she became a rage-filled monster. Yeah, that was scary as hell... as a kid, and in Coraline.

@aa-xi8bc
@aa-xi8bc 2 года назад
I find the Balrog much scarier. With Smaug, you hear about how terrible he is at the very start of the book and they explicitely go to him expecting his presence. But with the Balrog, you don't even know about his existence until they enter Moria, and it's arguably the first time Gandalf is actually terrified of something.
@jasonblalock4429
@jasonblalock4429 2 года назад
Also, while I don't know if Cinefix's writers have read the books, the Balrog as an instrument of fear is 100% canonical, and it's amazing how well Jackson put that onscreen. According to the lore, the Balrogs had such an aura of terror that seeing one step onto a battlefield could send an entire army fleeing for the hills. And if the army held their ground, they'd probably all die.

I can't believe the tripods from War of the Worlds didn't even get a mention for the section concerning monsters that evoke a sense of awe. I remember watching that film as a kid and thinking how imposing they were due to their visuals and great audio design.

The mutant fish from the host. I love the boldness of showing the monster go on a rampage in public, in broad daylight, for ten minutes to open the film!

Oh man. The first time I saw the Balrog on the big screen my jaw was on the floor. Especially that moment when it 'flexes' and its whole body just erupts with flame. A worthy pick for 'Awe'.

Very thoughtful presentation. I would have to say as far as staple monsters... The Thing from John Carpenter's version is number 1. They had planned a sequel unfortunately, in movie release dates they were in competition with another alien... E.T. So the subsequent sequel was never green lit. I remember seeing Alien in the theater... my mother had seen it an forbade my dad (they were divorced) from taking me to in that summer... I read the book which made her mad...(she didnt tell me I could not read the book aaannnd...at 10 she could not admonish me for "reading a book") I loved Alien... the design and art direction of that film was before its time...or just on the mark. The lycanthropes from the Howling (srry American Werewolf in London) they were intelligent in beast form...which made them even more vicious. The Blob from the 88 version was well done and horrifying. The seed people from Invasion of the Body Snatchers was also terrifying...however I would caution any intelligent species it would be a mistake to try and replicate humans...as we are the worst monsters of all.

Happy to see the Xeno, The Thing, Gojira, and Pazuzu here. For dread, I would have picked the Pod People from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and with love to Brundlefly and the Cenobites, no list of cinema monsters is complete without Frankenstein's monster and Count Dracula.

Would have added, at least as honorable mentions, A Nightmare Before Christmas, Solaris, Stalker (on a very philosophical level, but even more so), Us (even though I didn't like the movie all too much), The Last Unicorn, Harry Potter, The Golem: How He Came into the World, and most likely many more if I were to think about it a bit longer :) Definitely a nice list, though!

When I saw the clip of The Cabin in the Woods at the beginning of this video, I thought you were going to try and claim that movie was great. That's when my expectations of this list fell to zero. BUT: This might be the BEST list I've ever seen you do. There isn't a single thing here that I wanted to disagree with: there's no fluff, no crap, no wastes of space. There was nothing overrated or overdone. Just pure magic, expression, and emotion. I'm so moved by this video that actually I'm shocked. It's crazy that it's movie monsters.
