Probably too many to be able to pick just 10; the vast majority of recipients seem to just reel off the names of all the people they're grateful to (don't forget the producers or your agent!) and telling their partner, kids and parents that they love them. Yawn. Don't bore us with that, tell us how you feel!

Definitely underrated is Russell Crowe's speech for Gladiator. He managed to do the "usual" parts of thanking parents and agents with eloquent and fresh phrasing, and ended it with poetic encouragement: "You know, when you grow up in the suburbs of Sydney or Auckland, or Newcastle like Ridley or Jamie Bell, or the suburbs of anywhere, you know, a dream like this seems kind of vaguely ludicrous and completely unattainable. But this moment is directly connected to those childhood imagining[s]. And for anybody who's on the down side of advantage and relying purely on courage, it's possible."

If we talk about iconic oscar speeches, there needs to be a slot for Jorge Drexler when he won best original song for "Al otro lado del rio" (the son from Motorcycle Diaries). It's still to this day the only Spanish language song to ever win a best song oscar and since he was unknown to the world the organizers of the show wouldn't let him perform his song and had Antonio Banderas sing it instead. When Jorge won, instead of giving a speech, he just sang a verse of the song a capella with his incredibly sweet voice. I might be biased because I'm also uruguayan but it's unforgettable to me, we all expected him to name the country or some famous uruguayan people, maybe some members of his family (I was in college with his brother) but nope, he just sang LOL.

I didn't entirely agree with the win but I thought Michael Caine's Oscar speech for The Cider House Rules was one of the best speeches ever. Plus Bob Hope getting his honorary Oscar was great mainly because he always said he relied on que cards and his writers yet he didn't have anything ready and was able to give a great speech.

No force in heaven or on earth will convince me that Cuba Gooding Jr. gave a better performance than William H Macy in Fargo, or Edward Norton in Primal Fear. This is one thing that PISSES me off about the Academy; this was a reward for a hip actor in a very hip and of-the-moment movie and the award was mostly for one scene of hip sort-of-funny dialogue that became the phrase of the moment.

Great list, but it definitely skews pretty modern, even taking into account the fact that not many 1930s or 1940s speeches are available. Three of my favorites that I think should have definitely made the list are: Rita Moreno, Sidney Poitier, and Ruth Gordon :)

I’ve got a few Eva Marie Saint “I’m gonna have the baby right here” Adrien Brody both his winning speech and his presentation the next year with the Binaca. Priceless. I know he’s still cancelled, but Kevin Spacey thanking his mom for driving him to acting class during his acceptance speech for ‘The Usual Suspects’ is lovely. Clark Gable thanking Frank Capra and Claudette Colbert is sweet and gracious. Paul Williams thanking ‘all the little people’ for best song…. There are so many esp. from years past (ie before the 2000’s) that really deserve a look

I find Dustin Hoffman's speech quite pretentious. Hattie McDaniel's win was a milestone - but she wasn't even allowed to say what she wanted. Her speech was reportedly written by the studio and it's so cringy when they made her say she "hopes she'll always be a credit to her race". I agree on the rest of the list, specially Olivia Coleman.

Didn't Hoffman promise to give his Oscar to SAG so the union could display it in their office as encouragement for struggling and out-of-work actors? That never happened! Fortunately, he sounded like a less of a prick when he accepted his second Oscar for "Rain Man."

One of my favorites, certainly from recent years, is Jamie Lee Curtis. The fact that she gave shout-outs to all the people who helped her in her career when she did films that the academy usually overlooked by saying "We just won an Oscar" several times is awesome. She only ever said "I just won an Oscar" when she was talking directly to her late parents. In fact, all the acting Oscars from that year were pretty good. Brendon Frasier, Key Huy Kwan, and Michelle Yeoh also had memorable speeches.
