Simple logic alert: Asheville gets a rep for being a cool artsy, indie, hippy city. People move here and price out all the folks who made it a cool place to be.

gabe barnes, is the problem the cost of living? It seem this happens wherever the hipster, nouveau hippie crowd move to. They move in with wealth made in other places, drive up the cost of living for locals, leave when it isn't "cool" to live there anymore, and head to the next "cool" town; meanwhile, leaving native locals or longtime locals to clean up the economic mess. Am I wrong?
@lilknapsack1880
@lilknapsack1880 4 года назад
Dana Hill you’re not wrong, but people also come here to retire and about idk 10 years ago they built a large neighborhood of gigantic homes. That brought a lot of wealth into the west side. I happened to go to that high school and there was a clear wealth divide. Hipsters definitely come here too. The problem is that most of the jobs available are service or hospitality. We have an outlet mall but you can expect $8/hr there. Rent is outrageous. Trailers are over $1000 on the outskirts of town. I am 25 and was born here but I had to move 45 minutes out of town into a crappy woodpaneled house to be able to afford to live.

Daniel, the same thing happened to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. IT was a beautiful place and the locals were all so kind. The originals still are. Then they opened Interstate 66 from Front Royal to northern Virginia. Now, Novas (Northern Virginians) have moved in by the thousands and brought hugely inflated real estate prices as well as a general increase in all prices. I am told by some locals that they can barely pay their property taxes any more. IT's so sad.

Asheville has been ruined, unfortunately. Lots of low-wage jobs, high (and still rising) housing costs, a steady influx of people into the city (visiting but also relocating), more traffic, inadequate roadways, too many hotels (some blocking the mountain views from downtown), more chain stores and restaurants, loss of locally-owned businesses, etc. One of the worst parts of the overdevelopment is the cutting of trees and bulldozing of land.

Excellent piece on Asheville. I have lived here for 15 years now and have seen it devolve exactly as Mr. Briggs states in this video. DO Not move here unless you are independently wealthy. Every day a new apartment building or condominium is popping up... shoddy and fast construction and the rent will be $1500 for a studio or $400,000 for a one bedroom condo. Seriously people, every single point made in this video is absolutely accurate. Also, you can bet nearly half the people you will encounter in a day downtown are homeless, impoverished and there is absolutely no way out for them.

I currently live in Asheville, I’ve lived here my whole life, some of the points he made are very false but some are also true. Crime rate has spiked recently, and poverty is becoming more common as the prices of everything is rising. Schools are a hit or miss, if you have money and can afford to live in a nice area you will be blessed with a good school but on the other side the bad areas have schools that are lacking the drive to teach students. The jobs are not so good unless you have already built a good career, if you are young and starting out in the job world you will have a hard time finding good paying jobs. He was spot on with the political side of Asheville, there is a big political war between the different views people have. Asheville might be a good place to visit but living here is very lackluster, it’s a money pit for tourists.

Hiya! I'm the guy you quoted. Thanks for getting my name pronounced right. Anyways - it was weird being quoted rather out of context. You really needed to stretch to find anything controversial. Back in 2010ish a local reporter by the name of David Forbes (Who, I am a big fan of his work on The Asheville Blade, BTW) had opened a conversation around an observation that “Asheville remains a largely segregated city, something the tacitly liberal hippy/ hipster population chooses to ignore for the most part.” I wrote: “‘Segregated is a loaded term that does not apply to Asheville or the hippy/hipster scene.” My point, at the time, was that Asheville's alternative community wasn't trying to exclude or ignore anyone - and that accusing cultural creatives of willful segregation is inaccurate and unproductive. Weird to see it being twisted to imply a defense of excluding people. But meh.

DONT MOVE HERE I'm born & raised here and it has changed so much in the last 10 years. Some for the better but mostly for the worse. Housing and employment suck, traffic really SUCKS, the homeless population is quickly rising (other cities actually send people here on one way tickets), the drug problem (heroin, crack, meth) is getting worse, effin needle exchange on the west side so now you have to keep an eye out for needles before you step out of your car (mostly on the west side closest to the needle exchange... don't get me started about that place). I live what should be 5 -6 min to down town when was in my teens to 30 now it's more like 15. Oh and did you know the income to cost of living deficit in Asheville is roughly $6,000 higher than Boston (which is very expensive to live in) both having deficits in the $20-30,000 range? Idk how people afford to live here with prices being so high. I live in our family home so I don't have to worry because it's paid for, but I couldn't live here if it wasn't. And I don't mean some good old pot, I mean the full "needle-in-arm" kind of drugs. And people generally seemed to be wary and hostile. Okay, I lived in Asheville for seven years. Finally left in 2017. Most of the info is accurate, although I don't understand why the crime rate was number one. It's most certainly not "out of control." As for the traffic, we know it's not the worst in the US but it's unreasonably bad. Asheville has been growing for decades and the city has done nothing to accommodate the new residents. Compared to other places of similar size and population, the traffic is awful. It once took me 45 minutes to get home from work, which was only a 5 mile commute.

Love Asheville!! what's the name of the pub that sells over 300 types of beer? I was having such a great time - I woke up on my hotel room floor with a postit note stapled to me by my wife stating my name, nationality, blood group and hotel... It was a great time.

Thanks for the video Briggs! I’ve lived here for 7 years and it’s changed a lot in the last few years. I live downtown and I know that some will disagree with me when I say that crime has definitely risen. I’ve personally been accosted three times in the last year and half, in broad daylight. Violent crime and drug related crime have gone up a lot too. Prices have definitely gone up as you mentioned too. The area is beautiful for sure, but living downtown not so much. Great video. Pretty spot on for the most part.

I did some personal online research and crime is definately high there, you are a good example being a victim, thanks for sharing, that sucks you got robbed or whatever, sorry to hear that. Criminals suck, we need more cops and tougher penalties on actual real crimes.

I’m not sure you did your homework on Asheville. While we’re definitely not NYC as far as the traffic goes. We have the second most deadliest intersection in the nation. It’s the intersection of Patton ave and New Leicester hwy. We have the most traffic fatalities of any WNC county. The highest per capita pedestrian related traffic accidents in the state. The roads are in such disrepair you’d better get that lifetime alignment plan at the tire store. Some of our schools are so bad they get a D educational grade (Erwin). It’s so bad the schools were legally obligated to send home letters to the parents of students stating this. Unfortunately I have the letter. Our schools are full of heroine. Multiple children OD in the schools themselves each year. My son seen a boy OD last week in the bathroom at Erwin HS. School had been in session for less than two weeks here at the time. The liberal government corruption is horrific. We had at least three local government officials sentenced to federal prison time last week. The local law enforcement is a joke. We recently had someone abducting young women. There have been body parts found on the roadsides locally. But...by all means move here!🙄 From a Asheville native who’s family has been here since 1787.

I live in Hendersonville, worked in Asheville for a bit and love both places. The points raised (short of poor employment) pretty much apply to any city... Crime is far from “out of control”. Housing is expensive..because the location is absolutely gorgeous... you can easily afford a place in rural Kansas, but you will be hard pressed to find mountain hiking, rivers, waterfalls etc.. San Francisco suffers from similar fates (again short of employment). I love it here and of course would like to stem the tide of those moving here but am complimented so many love our home and it would be selfish of me to have so much of what others want and then tell them to stay away... I realize there is a price to everything and if the points you raise is the price, I remain more than happy to pay it.... there just is no place more beautiful.

WNC used to be the greatest place on earth. Everybody knew everybody and there was zero crime and nothing but fun. Then the rich and the rich retirees started moving in around 2000. Now it’s minimum wage seasonal jobs catering to the rich, no careers, huge drug problem causing a lot of crime, and nowhere to live, and people just keep coming and coming and coming.

I live in Asheville. I was born and raised here. I love my city. I would absolutely be considered a local and would gladly welcome anyone from anywhere. Asheville, from my perspective, is actually pretty diverse. Multiple races and people with all sorts of cultural backgrounds live here and love it. With that being said, it IS expensive to live here. This is true. 20 or so years ago all of the plant jobs that could support a family very well left the area. Couple that with inflation. Now, a single middle class family of 4 needs at least 3 SOLID streams of income to live comfortably. That’s my one gripe about Asheville; they took away good, solid plant jobs and left us mostly fluff and fast food to support our families.
