Just here to say thank you a thousand time. I've had carpal tunnel for 8 years, going to chiro and acuponcture trying to avoid surgery. I've started using a grip strengthner and doing shrugs everyday after seing this video and all my symptoms have been gone ever since.
@@reg8297 I could, but im not working a desk job, so my case could be different from yours. My working hours we're usually the least painful ones in my days.
I watched a video a couple days ago and was doing some of these stretches that you've shown, and my carpel has actually gotten worse.Thank you for this video.
I've been stretching for months just to avoid the pain from coming back. Unfortunately it came back this week. I continued to stretch it for the past 6 days in an attempt to get rid of the pain. It didn't work. Today I decided to research and came across your video. After doing the shrugs I went and purchased the grip strengthener. I started using it on the drive home. By the time I got home the pain decreased significantly. Thank you so much! I'll update tomorrow after a good night's sleep.
@@hellow304 the grip strengthener worked a little bit but my instant relief came from De Quervains stretches by Bob and Brad. It was a whole different tendon that was playing up. My pain completely disappeared next day and hasn't returned since. Do you want a link to that video?
Incredible information. Thank you for the amazing videos. I have been suffering for a very long time. Recently, more often as I have Polymyalgia Rheumatica and am on prednisone. The numbness and tingling in both hands is driving me crazy. Nighttime is extremely bad for sure. Physiotherapist just suggested the surgery a few days ago.

After reading several comments below I'm very excited to try your recommended hand strengthening technique, I am tiered of the tingling in my hand and can't take the time off for a surgery that I want to avoid anyway. Thank you so much.
Thank you! After religiously doing all the exercises the orthopaedic doctors recommended following a wrist break, I have ended up with carpal tunnel sydrome. Now I understand what not to do, and it's pretty well everything the orthopaedic doctor told me to do! I could not understand why my wrist still looks so small even though I can almost lift the same weights I used to lift in the gym.
Hey HP, we are so sorry that you were misguided in your recovery process! This is the case more often than not, sadly. We are glad that you now know what to do and not do though. Thank you for sharing and for your support! 🧡🙌🏽
This is the best information on Carpal tunnel available and I can feel the benefits of shrugging immediately! Plus I have tried some of those exercises like the first one and the nerve floss and they definitely aggravate the pain. Well done Doctor, you are a good one!
I was "prescribed " all these exercises (that you say don't do) by an Occupational Therapist. I agree with you because all these exercises made me worse in just three appointments. Do different schools teach different stuff??? How it can be so opposite in treatment approach?
I am so grateful that I discovered your website as I was considering an operation and/or injection on my carpal tunnel. I will do the exercises staring today and I'm pretty sure I will heal from this. Thank you again for saving me from further pain.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapyaI actually have sciatica and I work from home for 8 hours, my sciatica is now causing my finger tips on my left hand to be weak.. that's why I'm watching your video 😊
Thank you so much Dr. You are the only most legit help I got. After a week of using it my nerve sensitivity is almost gone.. Thank you so much Alhamdullilah. I thought i am going to stop the work that i am doing.
I'm super new to looking for relief so have not tried much yet but some of the the stuff in your video did give me short term relief. Probably only 3 weeks of discomfort that I was beginning to think was not improving. Bending hands down gave me confidence that my hand had not been broken and also probably not fractured. Understanding this is a short term fix is wonderful information and I certainly thank you for showing what may actually fix the underlying problem.
This video has been very helpful because on due surgery to both hands for carpal tunnel… To be honest the doctors in the UK involved in my treatment aren’t that good and none of them have explained any implications which are transparent in this video. For instance: I didn’t realise the carpal tunnel band ligament would be permanently detached… I thought the incision was to relieve the pressure… None of this has been explained properly to me even though I’m soon to be under the knife for both hands. on the Carpenter and cannot risk weakness in my hands, so I’m gonna have to rethink this surgery certainly as they want to do both hands at the same time. Also in the nerve induction test it didn’t show much carpal tunnel, yet I have chronic symptoms because I work with my hands all the time. The nerve induction doctor said he thinks it’s higher up in my neck, none of the doctors have explored this… And now after watching the video I feel much more well informed on the whole procedure/symptoms I’m the connection between compression in the neck and hand… None of the doctors have picked up that I’ve had surgery on both shoulders. The UK is diabolical unless you go private.
Number 11(?). Grip Strengthening Tool. Moderate clenching with this for 3 days aggravated my symptoms. I suspect that the root cause of my CTS in the first place was too much occupational clenching over many years.
I will practice your suggestions! Thank you very much for your willingness to share your medical knowledge with the world. Hopefully I can help alleviate the pain with your advice :)

Thank you for taking the time to produce this video. My gut tells me that surgery is not the path for me. It seems like most of modern medicine is relieving symptoms rather than fixing the root problem.
Please, I went to consult the doctor who did the speculum for me, and he told me that I had a partial cut in the cruciate ligament and he did (thermal cauterization) when he entered the speculum. And as I explained to you, the resonance does not show any cut, praise be to God, and he did a clinical examination for me, and he found that the knee is stable, and thank God, there is no betrayal at present. But he said I have some inflammation and roughness in the kneecap, which is the cause of the pain in the knee, and that I need to strengthen the muscles for a month, and if there is no response, I need an injection for the knee.
@@DaniellePioli not only that this is some of the most valuable knowledge that you can be given on the subject. What is worse than doing something that prolongs your condition or forces it from mild to chronic? There's also no shortage of videos on the internet of people telling you to do things that are going to make your condition worse without any warning or information on who should or shouldn't do it or what to be careful doing.
About three weeks ago I started learning piano and practicing daily. I noticed pain in my hand, videos recommended stretching exercises but these didn't help to elevate the pain. It got worse enough for me to stop training for a couple of days, and in the waiting I continued searching for solution. I see now that I might have been misled completely by these recommendations. I'll start exercising these muscles as you suggest, hopefully this will help.
Hello Dr. David M. Thanks so much for your videos and all your advice. We live in Quebec,Canada or we would come to your clinic. Your advice has helped me so much. You can try a hand squeezing exercise with bubble wrap, fold up sufficient amount of bubble wrap to fit in the palm of your hand and gently try the exercise 😊
How often should hand grippers be used if you have carpal tunnel? I used them 2 days in a row ( ~20 reps, 3 sets), and now on the 3rd day my wrist pain symptoms are worse than normal. Is one session per day too frequent?
sounds logical to not over extend nerves but what if median nerve is pintched somewhere in elbow tendon, and cant extend fully arm without feeling it stretching, hot to unpinch it then?
I fell on my wrist 6 weeks ago, xray showed no.break or fracture. Had ultrasound and it showed inflammation in the median nerve. I can't bend my wrist towards my thumb side without horrible pain. Will my median nerve eventually heal. What can i do.
Hello! I had the carpal surgery a month ago on my left hand, can I do these exercises on this hand? I'm plan to do them for my right hand wich has a lot of numbness in my center finger.
Anytime there is pain there is inflammation which means the cells are deficit of negative ions. Grounding the body to the Earth and alkalizing the blood with mostly alkalizing food herbs will greatly eliminate pain.
Sure of it. I had it decades ago while working in a poultry processing plant gripping a knife all day. It was excruciating but after giving up the work and physio no serious trouble with it since until taking up drumming and knitting recently. Both involve gripping and repetitive wrist movements. I’m not trying any gripping device because I know that is what causes it and hardly need more of the same.
I think so, too. I'm a violinist and this pregnancy has made it so painful to play. Pregnancy induced my capral tunel. I can tell you moving my fingers constantly only agrivates it. My palms mush have strong muscles tho since I've played rigioursly for 20+ years...? Anyway, some stretches seem to do tje trick and I can get feeling back in my hands and fingers until that also agrivates it... lose lose situation.
I'm at such a loss with so much conflicting information, it's like not enough research has been done yet and we just have to suffer. Got it from using a PC for years at work and home, no idea what to do and my doctor seems clueless as I am. Losing my mind

Do you have any empirical research to support these claims? Or is it based on a feeling you have from talking to patients? Have you considered that you only see patients for whom the treatments didn't work, and therefore your conclusions are based on skewed data? Have you actually done a systematic checking of outcomes for your patients with this treatment? Surgery is said to be around 90% effective. So if 1,000,000 people get the surgery in a year, that's 100,000 people who might end up in offices like yours and say, 'Well, it didn't work', leading to claims that surgery is an ineffective scam. There are thousands of RSI related videos on RU-vid, and they all say their method is the only one that really works. Wow, what a coincidence that the method that earns them money is the one that works.

Thank you for getting back to me. Just a note to mention that about 7 years or so ago I complained to my family doctor about fingers numbing and his only response was ,” call me when you start dropping your coffee cup “. I recently went to a sports injury clinic with a trap muscle swelling and asked incidentally about the numbing fingers to find I have carpal tunnel syndrome. The doctor showed me a spot to massage and 1 exercise. No mention of a possible pre-op solution. Suggested I return when the pain gets unbearable and they will then operate. No mention of a possible FIX to avoid surgery, even though the doc knew I was an avid exerciser ( injured my trap , working out ). Decided to research the net and found you. Thanks again from Winnipeg.
I had surgery scheduled for the 1st, but after looking at your videos, I'm going to cancel the surgery and try the strengthening the areas you suggested. Can you help me with some shrugging exercises?
Thank you so much for bringing this to light! My experience is that these stretches produce a lot of pain and make the problem worse. I am so thankful to have found your channel!
I'm 77 years old. I never had any physical problems until I had a Stroke in 2018. When I was at the VA a few hours after my Stroke I told the nurse who was tending to me that the needle she had in the top part of my left wrist was makin my arm and hand go numb. She wouldn't do anything to help me and shuffled me off to some other department for x-rays and then admittance into the hospital. I complained to every person who was assigned to me and no one would do anything to remove this needle. The next day and still no help until I threatened to remove it myself. The Doctor finally took the needle out of my upper wrist... but here I am 6 years later and my left hand has been tingling and numb every freaking day since. What do you think ? Oh yeah, *FtheVA !* *FJB !*
All interesting but too late for me. I already has surgery but can you still do and will it still help if you do grip strengthener exercises after surgery?
So I just started a new job that extremely labour intensive, lots of grip required. I'd consider myself very strong with very good grip strength but I have definitely over course of a week developed carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. Started with a bit of tingling and numbness then when I went to bed I woke up with my arm in a crazy amount of pain I couldn't even come close to fully closing my hand, and every morning this week, it hasn't gotten worse but it's like a cycle. Start of day I can't make a fist, I wake up start working my hand slowly and after about on hour I can make a fist zip up a zipper and tie my shoes, through the day my hand still tingles but I have full movement and close to full strength just with the annoying tingling sensation I come home and as I start to rest my hand becomes tighter and tighter then I go to bed and do it all over again. I have a brace I'm going to start wearing to bed and I hope that help but I don't know how long I should wait to seek medical attention. Sounds like most people's symptoms come and go, how often? Because I'm a little concerned that I've had these symptoms for 4 days straight. I'm used to using exercises to treat pain. I have sciatica but strengthening my lower back with Deadlifts and Squats has dramatically reduced flair ups and they seem to go away quickly when they do occur. I'm going to tackle those the same way but I'm curious, should I use a grip trainer when I have the tingling? Today is my day off and because I wasn't working I wasn't using my grip as much so my hand was still really tight but I did a couple set with a grip trainer and now I can fully open and close my hand. Seems like it help but I don't know I I'm just helping short term or not
Wow I had carpal tunnel release surgery in June Left and Right in August. My right hand is dominant all these stretches you say are not recommended were instructed for me to do 2x a week at PT. May I say my right hand is not doing well at all.

Thank you so much you are the man keep up the great work stay well have a beautiful day👍👍🙏

Hey Natalie! This is a common issue. We understand how frustrating it can be with all the information that is out there. It can be overwhelming and oftentimes contradictory. One thing to consider is that at El Paso Manual Physical Therapy we specialize in helping people avoid unnecessary injections & surgery while traditional physical therapy tends to focus on healing post-surgery. Because of this, the information we provide will be different versus traditional physical therapy advice. Also, everyone's body composition is different so what works for one person may not work for another. What's important is finding options that work for you as you know your body better than anyone. In order to find a solution, you may need to try different techniques and exercises that you find beneficial.
İ would like to thank you for your valuable recommandations. İ was diagnosed as bilateral medium level CTS one month ago and my doctor prescribed me all those exercises you mentioned here and have been doing the regularly but unfortunately i feel as if my symptoms getting worse every Day. . My both wrists hurt so bad this morning. Could hardly do my usual chores & shower. They get better as the day goes on. But I’m going to do both of these exercises for neck & wrists. My grip squeezer comes today
Hi Carnivore Gal! We are so sorry to hear that both your wrists are hurting so bad today. It is encouraging to hear that they start to feel better as the day progresses and that you're going to work with the grip squeezer.
