The thing I remember most about Burger Chef is that it had a build your own burger stations, where you got a basic burger and then put your own lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and whatever else on it yourself. It was cool as a kid, but wouldn't have survived the age of COVID.

Hey there is 1 Burger Chef still running and it's not a Hardee's. When Burger Chef shut it's doors, the Manager of my local Burger Chef restaurant bought the whole place lock, stock and barrel for cheap and kept the same suppliers of everything shipping to him. Everything is still cooked the same way, he just changed the name. This "Burger Chef" is now called, "Pete's Burgers and More" and is located in Reidsville, NC. They are packed with customers everyday. If you ever want to know how REAL burgers and fries used to taste 40+yrs ago, make a trip there. BTW their fries taste so much better than McD's!! My family and I only go Pete's on burger nights.

Howard Johnson’s gets a very prominent exposure in Hitchcock’s “Marnie,” and if I’m not mistaken, one or both versions of “Lolita” (presumably in the Nabokov novel I never read as well). I think Tippi Hedren orders “a frank and a coffee” which is in itself makes the scene hard to forget, HoJo nostalgia aside.
