Not gonna lie when I saw the segment about the 1218 I cried for 10 minutes and even went to my family for comfort just because the 1218 reminds me of my deceased grandfather who wanted to teach me how to weld, but sadly he died before I was old enough to use the welding torch comfortable, although I miss my grandfather more than the 1218.
The icons of America, the White House, Capitol Building, Statue of Liberty, Freedom Tower, Washington Union Station, Grand Central Station, Union Pacific 844, 3985, and 4014, but most importantly N&W Class J 611, and Class A 1218.
I was happy to see 1218 in the list but I got really sad as 1218 might never come back. God bless you 1218. Please come back. I will be waiting for your return... 😔 🖐
GUYS!!! I visited the York museum last year and a man who works there said that in the future Hamilton will be restored to operation in her streamlined look! all we have to do is wait.
Aww man I wanted her to return to steam non streamlined she looks way better without the streamlining that with it i mean she looks so much better without the streamlining than with it
Pretty good list. My favorite locomotives on here were LMS 6229 *Duchess of Hamilton*, C&O 2716, and LNER 4468 *Mallard*, and I can see why you chose N&W 1218 as the #1 locomotive on your list. But even with it's missing parts, I believe there maybe a chance that 1218 might return to steam, if those missing parts are either found or new ones are forged. But like I said back on part 3 of Christopher Kovacs' part 3 of his Top 11 Retired Steam Excursion Stars, my favorite retired steam excursion star is Canadian Pacific No. 2816. It is the only surviving non-streamlined H1 Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 Hudson, it was on display at Steamtown before it was moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania, returned to Canadian Pacific in 1998 and returned to steam in 2001, ran excursions on the Canadian Pacific system, and starred in an IMAX movie in 2011, but was prematurely forced out of service by Steam Hater Harrison in 2012. As for a future list for a top 10 (or 20 or whatever number) steam locomotive list, I think you should do a long lost/extinct US and UK steam locomotive list like Christopher Kovacs did, and we can see what your picks for that list would be.
If I do a top xx of extinct UK & US steam locomotives and you want to see duplexes, only expect the Q2's. They were the only ones that worked well to me.
I love 1218 so much. If I were a rich man, I would buy her and put her back into excursion and freight service too. 5 years for her ain't enough. Btw if you two guys (talking in the video) want to know more about the 611 and 1218 together, I say Mark I video and Pocahontas Glory Vol 5 does a good job at displaying both engines with more 1218 action in Articulateds America's Biggest Steam
I love 1218, I completely agree with your top pick! Thankfully, I’ve had the opportunity to see 1218 multiple times on static display, she is a behemoth
I agree that the N&W 1218 should be on #1. I had no idea it retired until I had watched this video. This video had got me in the mood to buy on HO scale model of it.
I heard there is a facebook group planning on restoring 1218, but for me, since it has many missing parts, it may take a decade to bring her back, its taking a while for the ASR to restore SLSF 1352, I mean, her restoration has been ongoing since *2008! 9 YEARS AGO*
Look at Flying Scotsman. For everything they fixed they found something new that needed fixing. The National Railway Museum spent 10 years refurbishing that locomotive.
One Engine that could've received an honorable mention was Canadian Pacific(Southern) 2839. This was an engine that masqueraded on the (American)Southern railway for only 2 years between 1979 and 1980. Today the engine is at the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar, CA.
hey thanks for including o Winston links favorite steam locomotive as number 1 you know he helped save the 611 and also I have a documentary about 611, 1218, and o Winston link
18:11 Everyone! Just Ignore all the goddamn car insurance commercials! Because the real death sentence for The Norfolk Southern Steam Program was a switching accident in Lynchburg, VA. The same for SLSF 1522 when it was taken out of service in 2002 due to a cracked sheet with rise and insurance costs! so just completely ignore them LITERALLY!!!
Also, my other thought about your number one pick for this list, if it were something of American steam, was going to be THE “Pere Marquette N-1 class Berkshire type locomotive number 1225”! You know, as in the one that Warner brothers studio used as base for their own movie interpretation of a children’s book called “The Polar Express”! Even though that one is still used by the Pere Marquette railroad sometimes as a Christmas excursion service nicknamed “The Polar Express”, and the fact that the movie version of the train whistle doesn’t sound like the real “Pere Marquette 1225”’s whistle!
Here's my top 20 retired steam locomotives list 20. Grand Trunk Western 5629 and Burlington Route 5632 19. Reading 1187 aka Strasburg 4 and Canadian National 7312 aka Strasburg 31 18. I’d like to do a top 10 with you! How about doing a top 10 favorite steam locomotive list? Comparing My Top 10 with your top 10. What do you say buddy?
As for a suggestion for a loco to be returned to the main line - Ivatt 4-4-2 No 251 from the NRM. She ran at the Shildon 150 many years ago, so she has moved under her own steam whilst preserved. With a light load she'd be a lovely returnee...
www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/lirr%20engines/C51s-251-Mineola-GdnCitySpur-1946.jpg This one? I know that's the wrong one... You mean that green Great Nothern Atlantic.
Hey Jim, I thought your #1 Pick for this list was going to be “GWR 4900 Class number 5972 Olton Hall” aka “The Jacobite”, otherwise known to Harry Potter fans as “The Hogwarts Express”! As in the only British locomotive that is not just a retired excursion star, but also a retired MOVIE star!
Test run of the Flying Scotsman was on the East Lancashire Railway as it is were Ian rilly and sons engine work shop is but she ran in the BR brunswike green for the first time on the NYMR North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Trains Magazine had an article about the Rocky Mountain RR Club trip from Denver to Cheyenne & return in March 1956. It has a gorgeous picture by Robert LeMassena of her running light to Denver at dawn. She later went to L. A. under her own power frrom Cheyenne, her final run, Summer 1956, the last 4-12-2 to run. Sorry, I can't remember the issue date. Early 90's, I think. I'm usually better at remembering stuff like this.
After a lifetime of studying the A4s I'm astounded at the photo shown at 6:58 of Mallard - I've never, ever seen it before. Could you please give the source of the photo - it's an absolute gem. Many thanks. :-D
There's several things wrong with yout comment. #1: Southern Pacific 4294 never operated in the preservation era, so it won't make it onto this list. #2: It's a Cab Forward. Specifically, a 4-8-8-2, which is basically a 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone permanetntly running in reverse. A Consolidation Mallet had a 2-8-8-0 wheel arrangement, and was built with the cab facing the tender. #3: The 4294 is an AC-12, *not* an AC-11. #4: Mallets were compound articulated, meaning they had a compounding system, allowing steam to be used twice. First from the boiler into the rear cylinders (in the context of closer to the cab) at high pressure, and then from the rear cylinders in the front cylinders at lower pressure, which were bigger than the rear cylinders to compensate for the lower pressure steam they used. But the later Cab Forwards were *simple* articulated, meaning the steam in the boiler was directly sent to all 4 cylinders, which were all eaqualy sized. #5: Sorry to go this far, but you should work on your spelling. But in short, the 4294 doesn't get a spot on any list of retired steam excursion stars, for the simple fact that it didn't run in preservation.
Why did you not include UPRR 9000 Class locomotives. I am not sure even a static model exists. It had 10 drivers and 3 cylinders and was consided the most powerful locomotive. They carried freight between Cheyenne, WY and Omaha, NE,
Was the 9000 used on an excursion? No, it wasn't. There's your answer. Read the title more closely. Also, the 9000's had *12* driving wheels, and I've even shown a picture of the 9000 herself *on display*...
Oh dear, I'm an asshole for telling somebody that a class of steam engines he thought was extinct is NOT extincct and correcting him on the number of driving wheels. Also, your initial comment would've made more sense for my Top 20 Extinct UK & US steam loccomotives. Well SORRY...
LMS 6233 (Duchess of Sutherland) might have been a bit jealous since Duchess of Hamilton has been streamlined, while Duchess of Sutherland wasn't... I don't know why I typed that, I just thought of it. (I'm gonna get so much controversy from this comment)
yeah, all I could think of was Pere Marquette 1225 in the Polar Express, GWR 5972 "Olton Hall" in the Harry Potter Series, and Southern Pacific 4449 in Tough Guys.
@@K9Nick811GAMES more locomotives used in movies. Atlanta and West Point #290 in Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Canadian Pacific #1293 in Terror Train (1980), Southern #4501 in Red October Sky (1999), Pennsylvania Railroad #1223 in Hello Dolly (1969), The Broadway Limited (1941) and a Saftey Rail Video (1950s), Norfolk and Western/Strasburg Railroad #475 in Thomas and the Magic Railroad (2000), Cotton Belt #819 in End of the Line (1987),
6:01 is duchess of Hamilton actually gonna be restored to operate in the not to distant future if so I hope it's streamlining will be removed I may not be a big fan of British steam lcomtoves but she looks better not streamlined just like flying Scotsman in Lner livery she looks way better in Apple green as 4472 instead of as br 60103 its her signature livery sorry if I copied what you said jim but I agree she looks better not in Lner condition than br
Jim I know you don't have any interest of Canadian steam but can you at least do top 11 retired steam excursion stars from Britain, and Canada, and America? Because I know 2 steam excursion stars in Canada that are the most popular locomotive in Canadian history
Here is my list #11 C&O 2716 #10 Y6b #2174 #9 The 4 Reading T1s #8 C&O Greenbrier 614 #7 GTW 5629 #6 CB&Q 5632 #5 GWR 5972 The Hogwarts Express "I'm a fan of Harry Potter." #4 PRR 1361 #3 T&P 610 #2 The Mallard #1 N&W 1218
I only did 10... BTW GWR 5972 wasn't officially called the Hogwarts Express. The real name of that locomotive is Olton Hall... Also, on your list, the American locomotives are outnumbering the British locomotives. ... just sayin'... :/
5:53 its not like that any more she has been re alocated to display next to the bridge as last i went with my brother it was parked next to mallard and the bridge mallard is far younger though as her sisters bittern gresley esenhower canda africa were all 1937 built Mallard was built 1938 as i found out when my bro did reserch into the class lol
and SHUT UP GUYS!!! 1218 can steam again! they restored 611 in one year and every American railfan i meet are downers when it comes to steam restoration >:(
1218 is a possible candidate but an example of the cost required for 1218 to run again would be in the hundreds of thousands. An example would be if for SP AC-12 4294 to run again. I asked the guy in the AC-12's cab about how much would it cost to get the AC running again and he said $1,000,000 but could be wrong.
ok how about the baldwind locomotive works 60'000 its not about preservation its just the locomotives i know your british but its good and i am a pilipino rail fan and im a big fan of MALLARD also the A1 pepercorn tornado AND scotsman
On this list, there are locomotives that have run at least for one excursion... And Baldwin 60000 was a demonstrator locomotive. No excursions with that one either. Also, never noticed the danm reply buttons under each comment? And I'm from The Netherlands.
Oh sorry for that oh yeah what is the name of a engine with a configuration of 4-12-2 just wondering cause of im a rail enthuiastic but its nice talking to you beside here in my country its night time so GTG oh yeah just recommeding if you want a game with you can build your railroad empire try trainstation the game on rails first its a mobile app second it needs wifi which you allready have so have a great day or night so bye
