Have you ever wondered what country travelers say has the rudest people? I did. I wish travel insurance covered a bad trip because people were rude.
So, I ran a survey and a poll to see what this channel's audience and tourists from around the internet felt was the rudest country. And when I say country, I mean the locals. Obviously, a country can't be rude. That won't stop people from leaving a comment about that.
Tourism accounts for a good portion of most economies. A lot of families and businesses depend on those tourism dollars. You'd think everyone would be on their best behavior. That isn't always the case. The countries on this list are the ones you guys felt had the rudest locals to the tourists.
Rude people and the worst countries to visit if you want to have a bad vacation.
Rudest people is obviously an opinion.

I was a sailor for 40 years and have been around a good bit of the world. I have found rude people everywhere but far more nice people in the same places. You can't judge a country by an encounter with someone who was rude to you. Also, how do you know that person isn't having a really bad day? We've all been rude at some time in our lives. Just apologise for bothering the person and move on.

I intentionally avoid rude people. I usually smile and make eye contact. If the person doesn’t at least match my energy I often don’t engage further. I try not to force things. This is important when traveling around the world or within USA 🇺🇸 being aware of our surroundings and feel the energy.

I was in Russia in 2017 and didn’t have any problems. Several times local people helped me in directions. The first day in the Moscow subway system a little Russian grandmother showed me how to scan the ticket to go down to the trains. In the station I was reading the station name ( Cyrillic, none of this bilingual stuff ) A fellow came up and very friendly said, “You look like you’re lost. Where are you trying to go? I just got back from New York.” I’ve been in numerous countries and have found lots of helpful friendly people. In France, speak French, even if it isn’t perfect.

GOOD FOR YOU, J.D. -- but I'm sorry to tell you that you seem to be in the minority among your countrymen. I've travelled all over the world, and everywhere I went, I encountered loud and rude Americans, who thought everyone should have learned English just to accommodate them. And when they encounter someone who doesn't speak English, they think if they SHOUT it at him, he will magically begin to understand the language. That's not how it works. They eat at McDonald's in Paris, leave garbage in churches, wear shoes in mosques, and show up in shorts and teeshirts at temples and other holy places. They barge into stores waving U.S. dollars (which they think should be accepted everywhere), and they expect to be waited on before others who were there first. Oh, and they loudly say things like, "Nothing here is as good as what we have at home." Do everyone a favour and STAY there!

A lot of people who say "The British are Rude" actually mean LONDONERS are Rude, since London is the main tourist destination. As someone who worked in (and commuted to) London for a number of years, this is an absolutely true observation. Arrogant (especially if they think you are "somehow inferior", unwilling to have a conversation, and generally extremely insular, on a par with Parisiennes. As for Russians? An entirely different culture, and, yes, they don't smile much since they are not as superficial as Westerners. In your best French reply back on your rights as human being. Usually if you assert yourself, you can get the other person to back down. As Rochefoucauld once said or "Ce n'est pas necessaire. Vous ête trop fort!" It is a Latin country, so it takes some arrogance to be assertive. Customer service is not that much part of French culture; the customer is not always right. In South Florida, the Cuban culture is very aggressive, so I had to learn to be assertive. South Florida may be good preparation.

Yup, most french are very sad & angry people towards foreigners. We had a taxi driver shouting at us when asking us where we wanted to go. We were with a toddler then, and she was scared. Driver looked really pissed too, like those french who spends months on violent protests that you see on tv. One Vietnamese lady taxi driver pretended that she couldn’t understand when I told her we wanted to go to Rue de Moscou. But the Algerians are generally very warm & nice people.

I worked for the French Government Tourist Office in New York some years ago. One day we spotted a full-page ad in the New York Times from the Polish tourism office. I don't remember the headline exactly, but it said something like: "In Warsaw, Parisian-style cafes, but without the rude Parisian waiters." Our supervisor thought of protesting this, but then admitted that French waiters did tend to be rude, so we let the matter drop.

Rudeness is very common in touristic areas no matter where you go. One reason might be the stress when dealing with tourists. Tourists who think they own the place, screaming children because they are too tired and parents not giving a darn thing about that, people who think they can do whatever they want and find it perfectly normal if after they leave the restaurant a high pressure cleaner is required to clean up the mess they created, the ever present drunken people, aggressive tourists operating in groups looking for a fight, toilets which resemble a swimming pool because people don't seem to know how to use a toilet,... The lack of respect in general. Be respectful even if something goes very wrong and look for a working solution instead of making endless demands. It makes life easier for yourself and for the anyone involved. On top of that, you might get more in return than you expected. A better question to ask might be which tourists are the worse. An other thing to consider is the mentality of the owners of restaurants pubs and bars in touristic areas looking to rip of people by serving the worse food possible. My advice is to go to non touristic areas. The food is good and worth the money, the people are correct pleasant and friendly, everything is clean. And probably most important: they want you to enjoy the stay in their place and they want you to return next time. In touristic ares, you're just a number and those who don't return will be replaced anyhow.

I would just stroll around, taking in the atmosphere of a casual place and try to get a feeling of what it's like in everyday japan, italy, greece, scandinavia etc. A vacation that's only spent in hotel rooms or tourist resorts, would be a waste. Some of the rudest people I have met were in Israel. I commented to a young woman (born in Russia) who worked the front desk of a hotel in Eilat about some of the rudeness we ran into. She said with a polite smile: "Israelis are really rude!" We also had an older Israeli taxi cab driver intentionally drop our suitcases to the ground in disgust at our final destination in Tel Aviv because I tried to negotiate a price with him initially. My experience in Italy was that the people went out of their way to be nice and helpful, especially in restaurants. In Ravenna, we cruised into town and couldn't find an open restaurant to get get some lunch (it was off season so a lot of places were closed). We drove by one that had some lights on so I went in to see if they were open. The owner said they were closed, but he would feed us on the condition we ate whatever they gave us. We got a fabulous seafood meal, three different fish, an appetizer, wine and dessert for about $30. After we were finished with our meal, we asked the owner to pass our compliments along to the chef whom we then found out was his wife. She then came out to meet us we told her how great the food was. We thanked them for their great hospitality and talked for about 10 minutes and then we were on our way. I only regret is I can't remember the name of the restaurant so that others might be able to enjoy it also. This is just one of the many great encounters we had while we were there for 2 weeks.

Well, at least academically there is considered to be general differences in how welcoming societies different societies are. The research points to herding societies being generally more hostile to strangers whereas agricultural societies which needed to work cooperatively to plant their specific staple crop, such as rice which needs lots of folk in one field at the same time will be more welcoming and curious. Coast dwellers are often more comfortable with outsiders due to a socio-historical familiarity. The fields of anthropology and to a lesser extend sociology specialise in studying various aspects of these differences. That being said if you storm around a foreign country being grumpy then the local people will indeed give you many things to complain about.

A lot of this is people going to other countries and narcissistically expecting the locals to act exactly like they do back home, not realising people are different. 0:38 Many visitors to Greece have had positive experiences with the locals, finding them to be kind, warm, and helpful. Personal experiences can vary, and it's important to consider the individual encounters and interactions when forming an opinion about a country and its people. It's important to note that attitudes and behaviors can vary within a country. While some people may have encountered instances of rudeness in certain areas of Greece, it doesn't necessarily reflect the behavior of the entire country. Different regions within Greece may have their own unique characteristics and social norms.Different cultures have different norms and expectations when it comes to social interactions. What may be perceived as rude in one culture might be considered normal or acceptable in another. It's possible that some behaviors in Greece that are seen as rude by some visitors are actually part of the local culture and are not intended to be disrespectful.

I've been to all of these countries, some multiple times, except for China. Wouldn't classify any of them as particularly rude. Each culture has its own way of communicating. Also, sometimes it depends on which area you're in, sometimes it depends on the tourist. If the tourist is rude, why should the locals be friendly to them?
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 2 года назад
I think that's a lot of it. If you speak a few words of the local language, it does make a difference. French has a uniculture, that's how they've opted to deal with mulitculturalism, people are expected to assimilate into French culture. If you can say hello, thank you and several other helpful phrases in French, the experience will be a lot different than if you expect to go and say everything in a foreign language. It's not a high bar, most people could manage that level in less than a week. Similarly, knowing any Mandarin at all, will get a very different view of China than you'd otherwise get. I was mostly in rural areas and I get invited in to cafes by the locals or have these amazing interactions with people. It was kind of stressful because I was representing hundreds of millions of white people when I did it, but for the most part they didn't have a fixed mindset about foreigners, just most of them had never met any , so it was puresly based on what they saw in the media.

I am Italian and I think I can explain: we Italians, the Spaniards, the Greeks, the French, the Turks, and in general all the peoples of the northern Mediterranean, have a large influx of tourists in our cities. We especially hate the flocks of Chinese tourists that invade the squares and sidewalks. The fact is that tourists often take up too much space, invading streets that simply weren't made to accommodate so many people. Sometimes a walk to catch some cool breeze in the city center in August becomes a torture for how many people are around. We are noisy, it is true, but we hate chaos. Another problem is the soaring prices in tourist areas. We are used to spending no more than € 1 for a coffee, and paying even € 1.10 is a robbery for us. Bartenders charge tourists more and some have begun to differentiate prices for locals and foreigners to avoid complaints from fellow countrymen. Another thing that sends blood to our heads is when tourists sit or lean on pieces of stone scattered around the city, which are actually 600-year-old fountains, 2000-year-old column capitals, or 200-year-old stairways that are made to walk on it, and not to have a picnic. We are fanatics of respect: respect the city, and do not take pictures of the citizens, because they may ask you to delete the photo with rather aggressive tones or, alternatively, to pay them.

I think what some people consider as rudeness may be a matter of cultural ignorance. For example, if you don't say a greeting to a French person before you make your request, they will ignore you, etc., because they think that you are being rude. Also, most people travel to Paris, and there they tend to have less tolerance for visitors. Even the rest of France say negative things about Parisians. I’ve rarely encountered rudeness directed at me either intentionally or not whilst visiting places abroad. But there is one moment that speaks volumes. I been living in Ireland for a decade. I was out working at a hotel somewhere in Cavan. Thing is with Irish folks “excuse me” is a quick casual “sorry.” Very easy going like. I’ve gotten really use to this so I was thrown into a state of shock when outside binning something this loud voice goes “Excuuuuse me mate. How do I activate the level to leave the parking lot??” He had his ticket in hand and hadn’t realised how to feed the machine on the way out. I wasn’t an employee and just said “I’d say I’m not sure but maybe feee the ticket into the till. But I can’t be sure.” He got all bent out of shape and said “oh forget it forget it mate I’ll GO IN and ask him he hotel boy!!” I wished him luck. Two minutes later himself and his mate came out all “ just wave the ticket in front of it Simon.” Five minutes later as their truck with yellow plates wheezed out the lot I could hear a distant “excuuuuse me mate how do I get ta tha Dublin road?” These guys wanted everything done for them. I think I heard the guy they were barking at say “follow the signs for Cork and don’t stop.” 😂😂😂

I think that it depends on which country you are from and what you are used to. I am from the Czech Republic where people tend to be extremely rude and unpleasant, so the UK seemed like a paradise to me. Although they are a bit more casual than I am used to. On the other hand, I had some bad experiences with Vietnamese and Chinese, but I think it was more like a cultural difference, not really an intention to be rude and then they were genuielly rude at times (like talking very loud, eating your food or walking away in the middle of you saying something to them etc.). I think rude people are everywhere, but some nationalities excel. I still think that the most traumatizing is customer service in Czech Republic and Slovakia...I literally got shouted at in a supermarket dozens of times for minor things like not scanning my card fast enough, forgeting to weigh my vegetable, not speaking loud enough etc. In Slovakia, I once went to a bakery and the lady was so rude about the fact that it took me a while to pick something (I wasn´t blocking other customers, I was literally just looking). When I picked some bread she put it in a bag and threw it at the counter like I was a dog. I still have anxiety when I think about it. Don´t get me wrong, people there can be very nice, but generally the workers in shops and restaurants are overworked and underpaid, so they tend to vent on customers. I use self-service tills and I avoid going to restaurants alone because I am a bit scared of waiters.
