I don’t think any of these scandals really upset me most of them just gonna made me roll my eyes. Especially the whole government thing. I don’t think it was meant to make fun of or vilify certain political individuals or parties rather, it was almost like satire.

Shelley Duvall was PHENOMENAL as Wendy in The Shining. She embodied the fierce love a mother has for her child, and the courage that is required to save her child at all costs when things go sideways. Her performance is still one of my favourites, and she deserved so much better.

The original poltergeist Witch used real life skeletons because the crew believe that they look too fake Which led to conspiracy theory because a lot of the cast has passed away.

It was not that uncommon to use real medical skeletons in movies at the time because they were often cheaper than the fake ones. This was not the first or only movie to do so, just the most notorious.

I think the biggest controversy/issue in the horror genre is the director of Heepers Jeepers having pedophile allegations/charges against him. I watched an interview with the victim (a child actor of one of his other films) and man is it bad. I don’t feel like people talk enough about it.

I remember me and my older brother argued for months over whether the Blair witch project was real or not, only for me to end up being right and able to rub it in his face when the films actors came onstage at mtv award show… memories

My opinions on the whole Twilight Zone accident: John Landis handled the aftermath poorly and deserves blame, but I feel like he also got thrown under the bus big time. The helicopter pilots, the pyrotechnic technicians, the parents of the children, and even producer Frank Marshall all pretty much got off blameless, leaving only Landis and his spineless assistant to take all of the heat.

He had a wonderful career afterwards, so he really didn’t go through too much. Yeah, the blank should’ve been a share button all honesty. Everybody that was involved should be locked up to this day.

Yeah Landis told them fly closer and ignored safety protocols. That’s why Spielberg is no longer his friend because of his negligence and he left him to go on to do Amazing Stories which is a great show.

There's an excellent book about the incident called Outrageous Conduct. There were really three that were most responsible: Landis, the pilot and the effects guy (and Frank Marshall for illegally hiring the kids to begin with), but Landis is ultimately the one who put the whole thing in motion and was incredibly irresponsible.

I was 18 in 1999 and still pretty damn dumb. Even I knew that movie was a movie, it was advertised and shoved down the throats of America. It was an incredibly heavily marked movie. Apparently, it cost $50 bucks to make but had $100 million for marketing. Still one of my favorites.

I agree, it changed the horror genre for certain. In the late 70s & mid 80s, horror had become just slash and slaughter, very mind numbingly dull. Blair Witch made psychological terror a thing again in horror films. That brand of scary hadn't been prevalent for some time.. it'd only been utilized sporadically. Without BW, there wouldn't have been Get Out.

This list requires a Vol. 2. For that include: Bloodfeast (1963), Snuff (1976?), I Spit On Your Grave (1979), A Serbian Film and the Human Centipede franchise (especially the second!)...

Martyrs was pretty messed up too but its a great movie. Atleast the 2008 original French version is great. The 2015 Hollywood remake is trash as always.

Horror is about pushing boundaries. So they're doing things right if it drums up drama. Exceptions go to real deep issues (ie twilight zone deaths)

It's pretty hard to top the TWILIGHT ZONE filming incident as the biggest scandal and controversy involving any horror film production - really only the CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST account comes pretty close (especially with the animal cruelty, which I will NEVER condone). What was just as disturbing was that after the entire fatal ordeal involving Vic Morrow and the two Vietnamese children (hired illegally to circumvent child labor laws), John Landis opted not to direct any more horror films and instead made a complete switch to comedy, which also outraged many and even led to the publication of several books now out of print.

Fun fact: Shelley Duvall cried so much on the set of The Shining, they had to keep water bottles on the set to keep her from dehydrating. Enough said.

During its initial release, Night of the Living Dead was distributed in a double feature with Doctor Who and the Daleks. That's how I saw both at the drive-in with my kid sister. As the lady said, no ratings system at the time (1968).

Yeah, I saw Blair Witch when it came out in the theaters, and only a fool thought it was real. It was pretty obvious when it came out what they were doing. When I was 8, I might have been gullible enough to think it was real, but anyone going to it as an adult knew what they were watching. But I enjoyed the movie in the theater.

If you haven’t already, I would suggest doing a video on 10. I don’t really know the proper way to say it over reactions or unintended consequences that movies have made. For instance, when the first jaws movie came out, it actually led to a very significant witchhunt of sharks, following the release of the film.

For those curious the actual footage of the helicopter crashing onto Morrow and the two kids is here on RU-vid someplace. One of the kids was crushed under the landing skid, the other was cut in half by the rotor blade and Morrow was decapitated by it. And the responsibility lay with Landis. Even after the accident, at Vic Morrow's funeral, Landis stood up and spoke and essentially just promoted the film as one of Morrow's best..

The helicopter didn't fall on Vic Morrow and the two children during the filming of _Twilight Zone: The Movie."_ It crashed behind them, sending one of the main rotor blades spinning though the air, which then struck the actors and decapitated them. @@fromthehaven94 she was. This movie was overlooked by a lot of people because of the political tone of the movie and their bias. When actually It was very even handed to both sides. Another great movie that got overlooked by a lot of people because of bias was DREDD. People thought it was going to be awful because of the 1995 JUDGE DREDD staring Sylvester Stallone was so bad. DREDD is such a great movie. I wish they'll make sequels to it.

...what was taught in my theater history class in the late 1980's was that a lot of the Exorcist protests were started by studio paid 'activists' to drum up controversy, also known as 'free advertising.' We actually had a group project to do the same thing for a production we were working on.
