oh hi mark Shhhhh it's subjective. Spidey has a looottt of problems as a character, especially nowadays. Go check out Linkara's review of One More Day to see what I mean
+Caleb Kai Quiocho Spiderman Blue was a story Jeph Loeb wrote and Tim Sale illustrated. It's about Peter on Valentine's day and he talks into a recorder about Gwen Stacy who's dead. He relives moments and memories about her and mary jane.
The death of Gwen came out of nowhere-the two issues prior he’s fighting the hulk in Canada then 121 comes out and the reader is dealt an emotional devastating blow with Gwen’s death-there was no build up to her death-in one issue Peter’s whole world is forever changed
Some of the issue listings need a little work (for example, the crossovers, there are 4 more issues in "Kraven's Last Hunt" that aren't listed, same with "Maximum Carnage" in the honorable mentions) so if someone wanted to use this as a guide to go out and buy these runs, they'd be missing some major parts of the story, but if you're using it as a guide to buy trades, it'd do. Also, I know that the movie stuff is more visually appealing, but I would have preferred to just see more screenshots from the issues instead, since it's about comics. As a Spider-man fan, I give this a B.
+Steve Anthony It's a video about comics. If you look down on people who like comics, why are you here? Also, it's 2015 and you're doing the "thumbs up everyone if you agree" thing? ALSO, 0 thumbs up for you. How's that going?

"If this be my destiny" is the first arc I really loved when I started reading Spider-man. And it left an impression on me ever since. It shows the kind of determination that makes him pull through everything, no matter how tough.
I know Spider-Man stories that you *shouldn't* read, but have to if you want to understand the continuity: "Sins Past", "One More Day", "The Other", and of course "The Clone Saga".
+Just Some Guy with a Mustache I read one more day, but I didn't understand all of it. Now, you should/shouldn't read Supreme Spiderman, because that's just wierd.
Ugh... No. It only got right the part about her dying, but it didn't leave an impact. In the original story, everything was leading up to her death. She was killed by the guy who was a central villain, not a second, or a third villain. And the plot revolved around the conflict between Peter, Gwen, Harry, and Norman. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, her death comes as an afterthought. There was no buildup to it, since the movie, for the most of its runtime, was focused on Spidey vs. Electro vs. Oscorp vs. Aunt May doing laundry. Gwen was the least important aspect of that movie.
idk, it felt like they ignored The Amazing Spider-Man #122, which is what makes the original comic so good. The point isn't that Gwen died, the point is the questions that it creates with Peter that were expertly explored in the next issue. The movie made her death emotional, but lacked the depth of message. It was basically saying "Keep your promise or people die" or "enjoy life because we can die at any time" (which are weirdly conflicting messages given the context). What needed to be explored was the contrast between a villain and a hero, and how even a flawed protagonist needs to recognize the line and have the maturity to respect it. That is what defines spider-man, not some broken promise or a graduation speech.
Its a great read! Seeing how Doc Ock lived his life in Spidey's body was truly fascinating. The Goblin army was such an awesome way to finish the story off too.
With Spider-man Blue, I think it really shows a human aspect to everyone. If we lose someone we love while we love them, it’s never resolved. When Peter Parker loses Gwen, he still loves her. Everything after is him learning to move on after the fact. It’s what makes it so important. When a widow or widower loses their significant other, they often choose to keep wearing their ring...it’s not because they are incapable of loving someone else, it’s because they will always love the person they lost. They never fizzled out, they were at their peak...and it was ripped away from them without provocation. If MJ got mad at Peter, it would mean she didn’t understand what it was like to lose someone you love...that she would be devoid of empathy. It makes it all the more tragic that she really does understand it. It’s part of why Spider-man is such an amazing hero, he’s always so human. He’s always Peter before he’s Spider-man, even if Spider-man gets in the way.
haven't read Spider-Man Blue yet, but man, even just that brief synopsis, hearing that MJ asks Peter to say hi to Gwen was like a punch in the gut, in a good. it perfectly highlights how complicated and beautiful all the relationships between these people are. that's just good Spider-Man.
+BATMANIA96 RETURNS some batman comics are better like the current Scott Snyder run, frank miller and a couple of miniseries and graphic novels here and there (my personal favourite The Long Halloween), but other than all star superman and a couple of others which I'd say are on par with some Spider-Man comics id say most superman comics are pretty big stinkers
Spider-man: Blue is one of the most wonderfully-told Spidey love story. The best part about it is when I learn how even Mary Jane has accepted the fact that she's not who her husband was supposed to be with, but still loves him (and Gwen) anyway. Also, I really like the first 12 issues of Marvel Knights Spider-man, where Spidey had to race against the clock (and against villain after villain) to find and save a kidnapped Aunt May. It's 12 issues of fast-paced action-packed story, with an interesting subplot where Spidey found out that, while he thought he was just an awkward street-level superhero, Captain America confessed that he and a lot of other heroes actually respect and look up to Spidey. This was one of the deciding moments that later convinced Peter to finally join the New Avengers.
On #4, Venom: Why would you credit Stan Lee for Amazing Spider-Man 300 when he had written the title in many years? This issue was written by David Michelinie and drawn by Todd McFarlane. Nothing to do with Stan Lee. And you don't even have the great Spider-Man (The Death of Jean DeWolff) story on the list proper? And you are missing Spider-Man: Coming Home on the list and honorable mentions.
A follow-up to "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut" was written a few years ago, aptly titled "Something Can Stop the Juggernaut", which is also written by Roger Stern. To sum up, the fight between Spidey and Juggernaut had consequences for one innocent bystander. It's a good read, and the art by Lee Weeks is really nice.
Actually one does. The one right after it: "The Goblins Last Stand" is #1 easily. Norman Osborn's "death" is handled perfectly: "Nailed not to a cross of gold, but on a humble stake of tin..." Perfect. Peter is in a state of rage never seen before. Especially the ending. Peter is in his. lowest point ever and yells at MJ to leave him alone and that she wouldn't care if her own mother died. MJ goes to leave but then stops and slams the door shut seeing that Peter is in need of a friend.
Two story lines I loved, but I guess they're a lot more obscure now, were crossover issues in the regular Spider Man series while Todd McFarlane was writing and drawing the series. Spider Man teaming up with Wolverine in one arc, and Ghost Rider in another. They were very dark stories, particularly the one with Wolvie, where they're led to believe the Wendigo is killing children in the woods, but it turns out it's a child molester/murderer dumping their bodies. Darker stuff, and still some of the best comic stories I've ever read.
I absolutely adore the entire Superior Spider-Man run, Maximum Carnage and Kraven's Last Hunt, not to mention the Night Gwen Stacy Died, I love this character
Ugh, I hated Kraven's last hunt. Kraven's victory was so hollow and the book was just unnecessarily dark. I would've enjoyed it if Kraven actually learned what it took to be Spider-Man, but he just made up conditions for himself and was like "Yep, I'm a Superior Spider-Man." Also, no Spider-Man Ends of the Earth? That was a fantastic comic which really showcased how Peter, if given the chance, could be the next Iron Man or Captain America.
Spyder! Spyder! Burning Bright! In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye, Could lay thy fearful Symmetry? Kraven's Last Hunt was the greatest Spider-Man Story ever written in my opinion. It was so beautiful, Mike Zeck's art in it was poster quality, J.M Dematteis' writing made me cry. All in all it was one of the most enjoyable eras of Spider-Man of all time.
southpark645 Betty was his 1st "love interest" after Liz dumped him. After Peter graduates from high school and Betty comes back to New York after mourning the death of her brother, they simply become good friends and Pete is over her mostly.
THIS! This is kind the lists we need! Great job! Too many people knows many of the movies, and nothing of the comics. This kind of lists should change it.
"one of the things that make spidey so popular is his determination... and the fact he never gives up." You basically gave us an adjective, then the definition of the adjective as if they were to completely different traits.
GumJuice You can buy it individually but it's very expensive. I suggest getting it in a collected edition like (Epic Collections Vol 1) which collects Amazing Fantasy 15 and the first 17 issues of Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko from 1962 - 1967 in full color reproduction. Very good value and you can get it cheaper on amazon.
"In the next issue, Spidey one-upped the Green Goblin by discovering that he was Norman Osborn." Osborn unmasked himself in front of Peter. There was no "one-upped" moment.
They should have added scenes from the Spider-Man episode "Make a Wish" for the ninth entry on the list. The story in that episode is very similar(based off of Amazing Spider-Man #55) and would have transitioned better then those random scenes from the Andrew Garfield second movie. My personal opinion, mind you!
+KimeraClan I agree, I think they should've put in the scene where Spider-Man's lifting the debris off of him from The Spectacular Spider-Man when they talked about "If This Be My Destiny...", as that references the most iconic moment in the comic.
Spectacular Spiderman: the child within #'s 178-184 and the death of Harry Osborn #200 have always been my favorite Spiderman stories. the J.M. Dematteis writing is excellent and the Sal Buscema art is beautiful. I love the 12 box page layout he uses. they are really effective in showing the emotional turmoil the characters are going through. especially when it comes to harry going back and forth between his sanity and insanity.
This was a good list, but I definitely think that an entry for when Spidey had the Cosmic Powers would have been a great addition. He threw the Hulk into orbit, after all.
I wanna mention the recent saga 'Renew Your Vows' where 'One More Day' didn't happen and Pete and MJ have a daughter(Who doesn't become Spider-Girl, but does have powers).
For me the ASM storyline is just 1 issue #246 "The Daydreamers" by Roger Stern we see fanatasies come true, All time favorire issue Spider-man's Jameson has to apologize by kissing his news conference, Next day Bugle headline is " Jameson eats crow" I still laugh everytime I think about it.
My List: 1. If this be My Destiny 2. the Death of Gwen Stacy 3. Spider-Man No More 4. Kraven's Last Hunt 5. Venom 6. Spider-Man Blue 7. the Green Goblin Unmasked 8. the Boy who Collects Spider-Man 9. Nothing Can't Stop the Juggernaut 10. Spider-Man
I would love to read any of The Spider-Man Storylines starting with Amazing Fantasy #15, Venom, If This be My Destiny, Spider-Man No More, Kraven's Last Hunt, The Kindred Saga, Marvel Knights: Spider-Man's Last Stand, Sinister Six, Spider Island, Death of Jean Dewolfe, Clone Saga, The Other, The Death of Gwen Stacy, and Most importantly, Ultimate Spider-man.
Don't get me wrong the Green Goblin is great. That's why he's number two on my top 10 favorite Spider-Man villains of all time but nothing can beat the number one spot which goes to the lethal protector known as Venom. Sorry he knows everything about Peter and can dodge his spidey sense and it's basically fighting an evil doppelganger of yourself if you think about it
You forgot to mention Spider verse Superior spiderman Spider island Back in black Grim hunt Ends of the earth Maximum Carnage Carnage USA Goblin Nation Renew your vows I know i missed a lot so mention them if you know more
Return of the Sinister Six Carnage Return of Venom (315-317) Boomerang...the Killer who keeps coming Back! Death of the second Green Goblin Cosmic Spider-Man Funeral Arrangements Black Costume Saga Trial by Jury Spider-Verse Recommended reading...:)
could have used the scene from spectacular spiderman for number 6 in that show masterplanner and spidy being pinned under a machine happens only its Gwen he needs to save not aunt may
Really good list. I really can't take issue with any of the choices. All I could do is add a few, like the honorable mention Death of Jean DeWolff story. Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #72-79. Spider-Man and Black cat try to stop a war between Doctor Octopus and the Owl, when Ock's henchmen gun down Black Cat nearly killing her. Spider-Man retaliates by beating Ock within an inch of his life and ripping his mechanical arms off one by one. Ock then retaliates by building an atomic bomb to destroy New York killing everyone in the city (including Spider-Man). This story is a prime example of how bat shit crazy Doc Ock really is, and he gets some serious bad ass points for scaring the Kingpin enough to skip town. Amazing Spider-Man #249-251. Roger Stern's final (original) Hobgoblin story sees Spider-Man attempt to stop Hobby from blackmailing some rich associates of Norman Osbourne (including Harry Osbourne)only to have his spider-sense numbed by a special gas bomb. Spider-Man then tries to track down Hobgoblin's whereabouts and discover his identity. The story ends with a slugfest through the city as Spidey and Hobby fight it out inside Hobgoblin's battle van. Special note for this issue being the issue that introduces Spider-Man to the Secret Wars. The jackal Saga, Amazing Spider-Man #129-149. Once Gerry Conway got rid of old baggage with ASM 121-122, he set out to write his own saga. It starts in issue #129 with a mysterious new villain the Jackal hiring the vigilante The Punisher (in his first appearance as well) to kill Spider-Man. The Jackal stays in the background manipulating events until Gwen Stacey mysteriously re-appears from the dead. The final story sees Spider-Man face off against his clone fighting to save the life of Ned Leeds, and the reveal that the Jackal was Miles Warren, Peter Parker's old biology professor. Just forget the fact that this was the reason we got the Clone Saga in the 90s and enjoy a good story. :-)
My top 10 best spider man comics 10 amazing fantasy 9 spiderman blue 8 venom 7 nobody can stop juggernaut 6 maximum carnage 5 kravens lest hunt 4 sinister six 3 no more 2 death of ultimate spiderman Hm spider island Hm spectacular spiderman 1 this is my destiny

I think one of my favs was "The Clone Saga" in an effort to make Spider-Man more like he was in the 60s, (puns, ect), the character of Ben Reilly/ the Scarlet Spider was introduced. The issues were only supposed to be a six issue run, with Ben turning out too be the real Spider-Man. But it was stretched out too include the death of Aunt May and Peter giving up the role of Spider-Man, and leaving town with Mary Jane. But fans were not happy, so after a year Peter was brought back, along with Norman Osborne and the Green Goblin. Ben was eventually killed and turned out to be the clone.
It started off EPIC! However Marvel should had just kept Ben Reilly as Scarlet Spider and work on that identity... The whole "Aunt May" death, but it ONLY an actress and the return of Norman Osborne was a JOKE!
Now, I have read both Ultimate and 616 Spider-Man. BUT, I personally think the ENTIRE Ultimate Spider-Man comics run is a straight up MASTERPIECE. Now I love Miles, but I really wish Marvel didn't used the Ultimate universe to test ground a Ethnically diverse Spider-Man. I really wish it was still going on.
No, it's true, Marvel confirmed that Iron Man will be their new flaghsip character/book when their comics relaunch next year. Spidey will remain their mascot, but Iron Man is taking his place in the comics.
+william parcell marvel may say that but I doubt iron man can replace spidey he doesn't have the wealth of really good material or true popularity spiderman has........if it wasn't for robert downey jr I doubt iron man would have come as far as he has and he can't play the role forever..........spiderman has far more media apperances comics, video games etc.......
