Top 10 Strangest Moments in Sports (ft. Gritty) - EXPLAINED!

One of my favourite mascots moments (although being a "slightly" biased Swansea fan) is Cyril The Swan punting fellow mascot Zampa The Lion's head during a half-time penalty shootout. Remember: Zampa is the mascot of Millwall!

A couple from the VFL/AFL (The Australian Football League was known as the Victorian Football League at the time because only Victorian teams played in it, it didn't become a national competition until 1990). In a 1982 match between Essendon and Hawthorn, Hawthorn and aussie rules legend Leigh Matthews famously collided with the behind post and broke it clean in half. Legendary VFL personality and commentator Lou Richards promptly dubbed him a "he-man". During a VFL reserves game between the Sydney Swans and Collingwood in 1985 Collingwood reserves footballer John Bourke was reported by the field umpire for kicking a Swans opponent. Enraged, he then kicked and pushed the umpire to the ground when the umpire went to report him. He then punched the Collingwood runner before being escorted off the field, but not before he jumped into the stands to attack a Swans fan. Bourke received the longest suspension in VFL/AFL history-10 years (reduced to 7) and 16 games. He was also convicted of two counts of assault and fined $2000. I highly recommend you watch this incident on RU-vid as the reaction of former Australian cricketer and later successful VFL under 19's and reserves coach Ray "Slug" Jordon is hilarious.

I believe there was an NHL game where a chicken was released onto the ice. There were also NHL games in which a player killed a bat with his stick, and another where one killed a rat with his stick. Oh and Ninh, great channel, great videos, and I really appreciate that you respond to the comments on your videos. It makes my day when I get a response from a video creator. Its especially impressive that you find the time responds to so many comments with the amount of subscribers you have. Anyhow, carry on and keep up the good work!

Gritty is indeed the "Best Mascot Ever"

This video is bloody hilarious. My favorite weird one is the Phil Dawson field goal that went through the uprights, but landed on the support beam and bounced out. Apparently this had never happened in American football before, and led to a rule being almost made on the spot (which the league made official the following offseason).

In the same vein as the Rovers chicken, there was Plugga. In a match between St Kilda and Sydney in the AFL in 1993, a pig was released onto the field at full-forward with "PLUGA" spray-painted on one side, and the number 4 on the other, representing St Kilda full forward Tony Lockett, who was said to be built like a pig. Lockett would later join Sydney in 1995, and eventually became the AFL's all-time leading goalscorer. A radio caller who said he brought the pig in stated that Swans players were in on the plan, while former AFL star Peter Hudson, and even the AFL Commissioner were fans of it. But that seems like a few porky pies being told.

The only other things I can think are no where near as good as your top 10 but they're all from Association Football. 1. The ball hitting a beach ball and going in, I think it was a premier League match between Sunderland and Liverpool. 2. All the lights going off in the stadium plunging the game it to darkness. 3. A team (I think in the English championship) forgetting their kit and having to wear the home teams away kit. 4. The ref handing out 3 yellow cards, I believe it was Croatia Vs Australia, in a World cup, maybe South Africa 2010. I remember the ref was English.

Stanford was so salty about that result, that they put an asterisk next to the result, saying that they deem the game as illegitimate and unfit of recognition.

Just realized, a video I would love to watch if you ever decided to make it, would be something related to history of rules changes to popular sports, such as association football, or a not so popular one like American football.

The "TImeless" cricket Test Match between England and South Africa at Durban in March 1939. The game was to be played to a finish - no draw when the allotted time (5 days) ended. After TEN days play, and with England needing only 50-odd runs to win, the match had to be abandoned as a draw as the England team had to commence their rail trip to Cape Town in order to catch their ship back home! The pointlessness of both teams playing for so long and neither team winning has always appealed to me.

There was an incident in the USA rugby 7s tournament in 2013 where a skydiver (who was delivering the ball for the final between New Zealand and South Africa) landing on the pitch when the 3rd place play off match between Samoa and Fiji was still being played.

Regarding Manu Ginobli killing a bat, a similar incident occurred during the 1975 Stanley Cup final when Buffalo's Jim Lorentz swatted a bat out of the air.

Eddie Gaedel did get murdered after being followed home; however, it wasn't after the game. It was several years later, when he was bragging about his accomplishment in a bar and some of the other bar patrons absolutely didn't believe him, inciting a bar brawl.

That brawl in a basketball game reminds me of the "Blood in the Water" incident/match during the 1956 Olympics. It was a water polo game between the great water-polo nations of Hungary and the Soviet Union... which happened during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution against the USSR. After a scuffle that led to one of the players bleeding a bit, a small riot (at an _Olympic water polo_ game) and police ending it, the match ended with Hungary winning 4-0.

In 1996, a high school soccer boy in Osaka, Japan also hit by lightning in game. He was severely wounded and all four limbs were crippled. In 2008 the city's sports association was sentenced to compensation for the victim 370 M ¥ (2.7 M£ or 3.8 M US$ in 2008) .

This happened after the video, but I don't care. Many NFL fans remember this incident. Philadelphia Eagles vs Chicago Bears. Chicago needs to kick a field goal to win the game. They kick the field goal and make it, but the refs said it was invalid because Philadelphia called a timeout like .0000097251573 seconds before the kick. They had to redo it. They kicked the ball and it bounced off BOTH BARS of the goalpost and they lost.

My favorite weird moment in sports was when a bee hive started to form in one of the goals of an Argentinian second division football game.

"Ninh explains: the dirtiest sports teams e.g argentina rugby. For your intrest it was the tyson ear bite mension that gave me this video idea. This is a SUGGESTION you dont have to do this video. But i think its a good idea.

That call play was allowed to stand because, with it being the stanford band, the penalty was against stanford and cal had the option of not enforcing the penalty and taking the existing result of the play instead. Imagine if every penalty had to be enforced no matter what and you could just negate a scoring play by shoving someone down field or whatever.

Could the chicken have been an inside job? I just don’t see anyone sneaking that into a stadium without being caught 😂

It was actually Riddick Bowe's entourage that beat up Fan Man, which was much worst for him 'cause Bowe had some unsavory people in his entourage back then.

If we're talking about animals in sports try looking up the NHL's weird history with wildlife on the ice. A live chicken, a catfish, an octopus(wtf detroit?). My favourite, the time a bat went flying around the ice until being swatted down by a hockey stick.

Also don’t forget Benny the bull who literally drops popcorn on everyone.

Not as weird as those moments, but on the hockey front there is my home town team the red wings beating up the colorado rockies. In retaliation for a violent cheap shot from ome of the rockiss players, the red wings targeted him the next year. A fight broke out between 2 players, and then everyone was fighting. The goalies even met at center ice and fought. Paybacks a bitch

The greatest highlight in bruins history is when boby orr the overtime goal to win the 1970 stanely cup and flew threw the air.

To this day, Stanford claims one of the laterals from “The Play” was an illegal forward pass, and the California touchdown shouldn’t have counted. To emphasize this, whenever Stanford receives The Axe (the trophy awarded to the winner of The Big Game), they alter the result of the 1982 game on the plaque from “California 25, Stanford 20” to read “California 19, Stanford 20.”

A funny momment in sport was in darts. It wasnt perticually strange it was just funny and ironic. Phil Taylor in the premier league of darts was on an outshot of 129. He went for T19 (57) Bullseye(50) and then his popular D16 (32) 57+50+32= 139! He busted by 10. Gary Anderson wanted 139! Exactly the same shot!

@Ninh Ly 2:32 the Cal coach at the time had rugby players as walk-ons (non-scholarship players) that whole season. He told them "I'll play you when I need you." Last second of the game.."I need you." No rules against it, all the laterals were legal...Cal wins.

The whole “dwarfs in baseball” thing is really mean. Eddie couldn’t help being so small; he had dwarfism which is a medical condition that severely restricts how tall someone can grow and dwarfism can’t be helped.
