I used to work at Blockbuster; it's how I got through college. Man, I miss it. We got to play movies all day (up to mild PG-13 rated), a 10% off on all purchases, 7 free rentals a week, and week early access to rentals and purchases. As for the job itself, it was fairly easy. Returning rentals to the shelves and keeping things organized, talking movies with customers, checking out rentals, then cleaning up and closing at the end of the day. That's basically it. There was the once a month all-nighters we pulled doing inventory, but that wasn't so bad.

What I miss most about Blockbuster, Toys R Us, etc was simply the motivation to leave the house a lot more often, and at most get the thing you needed right then. Now everything these days is instant, pre-ordered for pickup or shipped to you. This IS the future we wanted, but we didn't want to lose anything important from the past

Just imagine, it’s 2003 and you just got out of school on a Friday and you ask your parents if your friends can spend the night. Your mom says yeah and she even takes y’all to rent some movies from blockbuster. You and your buddies first pull up to the plaza with the blockbuster and you enter into this movie wonderland with this magical smell of popcorn, candy, fresh carpet, steamed floors and it’s a smell that’s so glorious and just makes you feel like it’s a sunny day at a carnival with all of your friends. You go into the store and look at a bunch of movies excited, you see old tv shows for kids like the bettleborgs, The rugrats movie in that classic orange VCR tape, power rangers, toy story, iron giant, home alone and the air bud series with that golden retriever that was good at all sports. You see all those movies but you and your friends decide between the power rangers movies of the mighty morphing power rangers or power rangers turbo movie. Y’all pick the MMPR movie but your mom says y’all can get both!! Yay!! Afterwards yall get the movie y’all want your mom says you can get 2 games aswell sweet….so you get that new Spider-Man game that just came out that’s based on the Tobey maguire movie and y’all get a game that you and all of your friends can play together in 007 golden eye which is so lit because all of y’all can play it on split screens and it has that iconic golden d.eagle. So after y’all get everything your mom goes to the checkout place and the sounds of everything being ringed up is so magical. Y’all also get some of the classic popcorn that used to be made over the stovetop, not the microwave (like In the opening scene of the scream movie). Afterwards y’all get into the car excited to go home for the weekend sleepover. Once y’all get into the home everyone takes their shoes off at the door, your mom goes and order some pizza, wings and soda for everyone and whips up that popcorn. Everyone huddles into your room to crank up that power ranger movie. The opening scene of the movie is that iconic sky diving scene with Tommy the white ranger on that snowboard…everyone is hyped and lit. Almost half way through the movie y’all’s food get here so everyone digs in while watching the movie. The movie is in its ending where that last iconic battle happens and that classic 90s song “I got the power” comes on and also that “uh oh we’re in trouble, something’s going on and it cross the double uh oh” and all of your friends are hype and starts play fighting wishing you was power rangers in such a childlike innocence and arguing over which power ranger y’all are and who is the one that gets Kimberly the pink ranger as a girlfriend lol. After we settle down, we get into that golden eye for the rest of the night until we goes to sleep. Before we go to sleep we tell a couple of scary stories in the dark and have fun, then we cut on some cartoons like powerpuff girls, courage the cowardly dog, ed, edd n eddy ext and end up going to sleep after a fun day…(on a side note-does anybody else remember how at sleepovers how it was sooo scary to be the last one up lol, I always used to be the last one up while everyone else was sleep and it was the worst lol, I used to try and force myself to go to sleep lol) continued… After that fun day it’s the next day and sadly your friends got to go home but on some case your friends might even be able to stay for the whole weekend until Sunday. After your friends go home, it’s bittersweet but you end up coping with it by playing that new Spider-Man game you got from blockbuster after you rewind the MMPR VCR TAPE for the next person that rents it. You play that Spider-Man all day pretty much and go get some of that left over pizza of their is some and you and your friends talk about that epic sleepover at school on Monday and make good memories. Power rangers and goosebumps are some of the main vcrs I rented when I went to blockbuster but that orange rugrats on was the most iconic. I miss those days so much, I even liked watching the previews on the vcr, I remember seeing flubber the most for some reason lol. I also loved watching home alone during the holidays or just anytime. It just gave me that warm, toasty, home vibe and I loved it. Peace y’all, I hope I was able to conjure up some memories for y’all lol

As a former Blockbuster store manager, let me tell you where they actually received the biggest profit-- Most people assume it was thru rentals, but it was actually thru late fees. And other sells like candy and merchandise were almost equal in revenue to profit made thru rental fees.

@@32lilbruce This is why every staff member was SHOCKED when Blockbuster decided to implement their disastrous NO MORE LATE FEES gimmick. They were thinking that may be the one thing that competitors would never be so crazy to do. It was the beginning of Blockbuster's downfall right there. I also remember when Paramount didn't agree with Blockbuster's ability to sell their movies used. After popularity died down, they would get rid of surplus by selling previous rentals for cheap. They refused to adhere to Paramount's request not to sell their product and Blockbuster was stunned when Paramount retaliated by refusing to sell their movies for them to rent out. It was a nightmare when a huge box office hit woukd be released on video and Blockbuster could not have it there for eager customers. That made Hollywood Video the place to find what customers wanted until Blockbuster reached a deal with Paramount about a year later and agreed to destroy Paramount movies in bulk instead of reselling them. And another part of Blockbuster's biggest revenues came from selling used product for turnaround. Once the cycle was damaged it never worked as well ever again.
@michaeloberg3018
@michaeloberg3018 2 года назад
I just recalled another dastardly Blockbuster mistake... When they began a Blockbuster online service, Netflix actually offered to team up with them and they refused the proposition saying that they were confident to rather compete with Netflix instead. They were hot shots. Netflix was a very young company just building steam at the time and Blockbuster assumed that they could overtake and saturate the market at the time. After all, everyone knew the Blockbuster brand! Look at the results from that decision as Netflix soared and Blockbuster dwindled away into an obsolete nothing...

Use to work at one. Fridays and Saturdays. I could get people checked out in under 2 minutes. Under 1 with no snacks and stuff. No one ever got the wrong movie. If there was a line of 30 people each in our 4 checkouts, my line would move the fastest. We were the smallest store but the Busiest in the 7 Metro Area of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Free movie Rentals, HUGE Discounts on Buying= The more you bought, the more Free ones you would get ( employees only ), Employee Parties. Caught several Children and a adults trying to Steal Games since my Counter faced the gaming section. Had to have the Cops come because we had a person call in and threaten the store and forced some employees to do things... the employees pretended while trying to get us in front to call the cops by passing a note under the office door. We were Super busy that night and with the three on the office, Short handed and we kept pounding on the door to try and get them to come upfront. Don't know if the guy ever got caught or not but the 3 employees that he was trying to force to do sexual acts quit after that.

Forgot these other benefits. Going to a library to borrow DVDs or Blu-Rays can not replace the Blockbuster experience since a library is not designed as a movie-themed place with candy and popcorn smells.

scrolling through a screen doesn't have the same effect as literally walking through the isles. you could literally spot something out of the corner of your eye when browsing, but with scrolling, titles appear in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment depending on how fast you're scrolling. the movie you might love could be in a genre you probably never bothered to look at. Cover art is also a major selling point, sure streaming movies and shows still have a cover-image and some are pretty inventive, but compared to the actual size of a DVD-cover (especially when looking at it in the isle), the thumbnailed-image on the main scrolling menu is relatively small and it can get hard to decipher what the actual title is or even see what's on the image depending on how detailed it is (or how big your TV is), because most people don't wanna click on the title while scrolling, meanwhile irl you can spot a distinctive looking cover-art from across the store and might even be able to recognize the actors from that distance before you even get close enough to read the movie's title, same can be said for music albums and their respective recording artists, the thumbnail-format does not always do the cover-art justice.

One memory I have from Blockbuster is my mother renting "True Lies" for herself and renting the N64 videogame "1080⁰ Snowboarding" for me and my brother (we would get the actual game that Christmas). Have a "love hate" relationship with Blockbuster. Blockbuster opened a location in the small college city I lived in the early 90's, that directly resulted in the closing of two seperate video/ game rental stores within a few years. Both stores were what you would consider "mom and pop" stores and did everyrhing better than Blockbuster but ulimately couldn't compete when it came to availability of new releases. Rebecca mentions in the video that Blockbuster employees would microwave popcorn to enhance the experience. My local video store had a commercial grade/ movie theater quality popcorn maker running every Friday and Saturday night and the popcorn was free with every movie rental. Blockbuster did get my business in the late 90's early 00's with the advent of dvd and video game system/ game rentals.

Worked at blockbuster for 5 years here in Australia. Was one of the best jobs I ever had. Was sad to see them go. As a movie buff it's a dream job as a late teen. Free rentals, snacks and the pre release movie tapes that's were 8 hours long. You would have to fast fwd a whole movie to see the next one. As soon as those pre release press tape came in store it would disappear for a month while someone watched all the film's....sometimes they would just disappear and never come back 🤣🤣🤣. I remember when our store closed the amount of stuff we just gave to our loyal customers because selling it seemed wrong. These people had rented these films or games/consoles for years paid for them 10x over. My boss was pretty good about that. Gave some kid a ps2 (he cried), gave a regular the entire collection of the James Bond section he rented them religiously. Gave another teen a Xbox, he would rent it with money he would earn from helping the elderly....could never afford it. So we gave it to him. Again he was blown away. That's the thing about working there, it's like a bar you have regulars you get to know them, often I would chat to someone wandering the store right before close one of our regulars. A nice old fella who was just a film buff like me. He always liked when I was working because we would chat about how some films were made, the good, the bad etc. People had experienced watching some of these films as well. I know that one couple the husband rented the movie they had their first date on every year on their anniversary. Few people did that. The best part of my day though, was when a kid would come up with a movie and ask a parent if they could have it as well. Seeing that the parent was struggling we would often say stuff like ",you have been picked for our one free rental for the day so no need to pay for that one". Those little things made the job worth while. Corporate were really cool about it too. Never asked us to stop, never asked us to just sell sell. It was a community store and that's what I loved about it. You got to know everyone and their tastes in film. You'd get excited to reccommend a film to a regular you know would enjoy it. Stuff like that. Good memories at that job.

I miss the excitement you had when you got to go. Even though it was a common thing to do, it still felt like a treat. An experience. It was always exciting to go pick out a movie on Friday night to watch! Now we can just stream everything. No excitement there. There is absolutely nothing special about picking out a movie anymore. Heck, I don't even really look forward to movie nights now 🤷

Never a Blockbuster in my country, but plenty of similar rental stores. Last one to survive made it all the way up to 2013, by shelling out some big bucks for a preferred store location in one of the biggest malls in the city. It truly was an experience to walk in and browse the movies and games; one that will sadly never return. It's simply the way things change. What I will always miss will be the "store closing sale"; got some pretty nice DVD's and games that are not only hard to come by these days, but for pennies on the dollar. Good times. Cheers!

In high school I spent one summer in the late '90s watching all the staples from the 70s and 80s that I had either been too young to see before then or not born yet... all via Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. I'd skip the outer wall and go straight for the center shelves to just look around until I came across something I recognized but hadn't seen. I was basically doing what the young movie reaction RU-vid channels do now. lol

I liked Blockbuster’s member appreciation program, which involved randomly selected members each month receiving free new movies. I remember randomly receiving classic movies like Rocky, Midnight Cowboy, Dr. Zhivago free in the mail with a letter of appreciation. I also liked how sometimes they had video game systems set up to try out while in the store. It was at Blockbuster where I discovered that the Nintendo Virtual Boy was a dud - so much better than figuring that out at your house after already having purchased it.
