Another issue is Mr Shuester itself. He acted like a creep since the pilot when he was stalking Finn in the showers just bc "he sang good". Also forced him to join the Glee club by threatning him with drug. Sang about fucking students, didnt know the language of the class he was teaching and mocked a whole culture telling he was teaching latino culture (which is hard to say it like that since in the Latino community there are many cultures, even in one country there can be many but details) and still showed Spanish culture. In season 5 or 6 ( I dont remember really) he tried to justify twerk between students and even dared to compare twerk with other classical dances 💀. Oh yeah, and the Marley thing in season five.

The show did not use Ryder’s situation as a teaching moment, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This list ignores the shared trauma Ryder and Kitty have and the social commentary told by Sam and Arie’s reactions, plus Kitty’s friend’s parents, that many sexual assault victims are either too embarrassed to come forth, or ignored altogether. It brought forth the idea that society treats SA victims inappropriately, or not at all. It didn’t have to have the boys learn something, because in this instance, the boys were a megaphone for society’s faults. Could the episode benefit from them learning something more? Sure. But the show certainly did not approach it as if the boys were correct.

@@dasiareed2708 it was taken seriously, just not from a "hey, this behavior is bad" standpoint. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I think the show DID say "hey, this behavior is bad," they just didn't punish Artie or Sam for it. We saw how uncomfortable Ryder was from that response. We saw Mr. Schue attempt to stamp it down. We saw Kitty come to Ryder with "they didn't take my situation seriously, either." We saw everything EXCEPT Artie and Sam getting punished. It was just left to the audience to decide "hey, those two were jerks." The scene with Artie and Sam was hauntingly realistic.

Marley Rose was the purest and kindest character in "Glee," and she was so likable, but she was still TREATED LIKE CRAP! She was manipulated by Kitty Wilde into thinking that she was gaining weight, most of the Glee Club blamed her for making them lose at Sectionals because she fainted (because the Glee Club only cared about winning more than Marley's mental health, and they never called out Kitty for her manipulative actions), and while she was recovering from her eating disorder, she got suspended for not wearing a revealing outfit? About the Ryder thing : I actually think it was an honest, though upsetting, representation. Pretty sure in that pre-me Too era any straight boy would have reacted the same way Sam and Artie did, and Mr Schue, for once, did have a decent reaction to the whole thing. However, they dropped the topic too quickly and Ryder's story with Kitty should have explored that a bit : trust issues, difficulties engaging in a sexual relationship, maybe even going to the police together or choosing not to and explaining the reason why.

I'm gay and was outed in high school but I couldn't feel bad for Santana when she was. Before being bullied as a teen for my sexuality I was bullied more as a kid for being the only overweight one in my family. I was bulimic and sixteen years after high school I continue working to not fall back into it. I would've included the mishandling of body shaming on Glee because that too can have long-term effects on a person. It was immature of the writers to think it was funny or acceptable to make frequent weight jabs at a guy like Cory because he wasn't shredded with 6% body fat like the other guys. He was at a perfectly healthy weight but was still called lumps/orca/tubs even in season 4 when he was at his thinnest and in the Quarterback episode after he died. Santana set the stage for this conflict by repeatedly exploiting Finn's biggest weaknesses/insecurities unprovoked and airing them publically to humiliate and demean him so he did the same to her. People in this world will walk all over you if you let them, kindness is too often perceived as weakness so sadly there are times you have to get up and fight in a way you don't prefer instead of staying down while someone keeps kicking you. Men especially are put in a no-win situation when a woman physically or verbally abuses them, they're expected to just take it but the second she gets a taste of her own medicine only then it suddenly becomes an issue and this conflict between Santana and Finn is a great example of that double standard. And being gay doesn't mean you have a protective bubble around you and can get away with treating others terribly without being held accountable. Gay or straight if you're putting ugliness out in the world it will come back to you. If you choose to go around hurting others with the intention of dehumanizing them, getting off on the fact that you successfully put them down because your own self-esteem sucks, then don't be surprised when the same treatment is directed at you because your words could be what pushes someone already in great pain over the edge. She also told Rory to do everyone a favor and just disappear which is unforgivable to me. I know this topic hits differently with everyone, and being outed absolutely can be a traumatic experience. But it's just as wrong how often the effects of Santana's behavior are diminished in this situation

Not to mention in season 2 when she threatened to out Karofsky if he didn't agree to be her beard and run for prom king&queen with her (whether or not she would have actually done it, idk, but even just threatening to out him was wrong)

The problem was not Beiste coming out as trans, it's that it undermined the earlier plot line that she did feel like a woman inside and was never treated as one because of the way she looked or the fact that she liked traditionally masculine things like football. It was a good commentary about gender norms and traditional gender roles, which they then threw away by implying that if a person looks or acts masculine, they're really a guy. Also, the actress that portrayed Coach Beiste isn't trans, so that was problematic too. If her earlier desire to be seen as a woman was just part of her truly being trans and fighting against it, that could have been addressed in the plot, but it wasn't. And for such a sensitive topic aimed at mostly young teens, that would really need to be more explicit. Instead it just felt like clumsy retconning. If the intention had always been for the character of Coach Beiste to eventually come out as trans, it would've been great if the part had been played by a trans actor or at least to have been given clearer signs along the way.

no… Coach Bieste’s transition was clearly not planned throughout the show and obviously added in there just for the sixth season. It felt like an afterthought Plus, having a trans man played by a cisgender woman is wrong on so many levels. There are so few trans roles in media. Those that do exist should be played by trans people (they managed it just fine with Unique.) There were some positives, like the support Coach Bieste got from everyone around him and I agree there should be rep for people who realise they’re trans later in life. And I know that this plot line was probably well meaning, it was just done VERY badly

So what happened to her was simply the consequences of her actions, built up karma for being so awful to people. Was it really heartbreaking to watch? Absolutely. Overall, Glee handled Marley's character very poorly. She was probably the nicest and most pure of heart character but the writers made it their mission to dump on her character every chance they got. Kitty encouraged her to have an eating disorder and then when she passes out from said eating disorder during a competition everyone gets mad and Marley and blames her and they show no concern for her. Kitty basically gets away with what she did. Later on the creep of a teach Mr Shue punishes her because she won't wear a revealing outfit she clearly states she is uncomfortable in.

A Few Honorable Mentions: When Kurt's dad has a heart attack and everyone gets mad at him because he doesn't believe in God Cheating in relationships: From the minute Quinn cheated on Finn, almost every Glee relationship had one cheating on the other, which sadly is sometimes the case, but not that many freaking times geesh. Sam being a teen stripper, they insulted him several times, when Blaine said "It means I'm not for sale" and when Sam asked Marley if she thinks he feels comfortable dancing up their shirtless and she responds "Yeah you do!" Or something like that When Kurt gets attacked by homophobes in New York. The episode was called Bash so you expect the episode to center on what happened to Kurt and how they're handling the aftermath, right? No. We yet Rachel drama, Mercedes and Sam drama, which honestly could have been an episode on its own, and then we got to the attack and then everyone at the hospital, Blaine singing to Kurt (which kills me everytime) then Burt talking to Kurt, and then Kurt is released from the hospital, I just feel they could have handled it better

Still agree that the episode itself could have covered more though.

As someone who's bi, I just want to say that I don't believe Kurt was truly biphobic. Does that mean I agree with what he said/believe he had any right to say it? HELL no. But I understand why he said it. Blaine had only ever portrayed himself as gay to Kurt, and Kurt looked up to him as a role model as he didn't know anyone else that was gay like him (that he knew of). He was also frustrated, because both Blaine AND Rachel knew about his crush on Blaine at this point and to him, it was like a slap in the face, as if Blaine was saying "I'd rather date a girl than you 🤷‍♀" and Rachel was saying "I know you're crushing on this guy and you're my friend, but I'm gonna date him anyway 😊". So when he found out Rachel asked Blaine out and Blaine said yes, he lashed out and said things he didn't mean. Teenagers are hormonal, emotional, and impulsive; Kurt verbally lashing out because of teen heartbreak isn't that farfetched. He hasn't shown signs of being biphobic at any other point in the series that I can remember; in fact, he's very accepting and supportive of Brittany, who is an established bi character. Was he completely in the wrong for his comments to Blaine? ABSOLUTELY. He could have handled it a lot better and without being hurtful to the bi community. But do I understand why he lashed out? Yes. Now, we could go on about the creators' failure to include more bi rep outside of just Brittany (or any additional sexualities outside of lesbian and gay), but that's a whole other can of worms lol.

I'm rewatching Glee right now, and she's not my favorite character but they did Quinn SO dirty. Not only did she had to give up her baby (while it was the right thing to do, it still took its toll on her), they also never adressed how she was kicked out by her parents. Sure her mom ends up coming around... but only because the dad cheated? What if he hadn't? And speaking of the dad, we never hear about him again. No apology, nothing. Being abandoned and shunned by those who were supposed to love her the most clearly took a toll on her, but it's never adressed. Everyone just outright ignore her cries for help (first part of season 3 is basically a giant one) because... she seems to hold it together? Because she's pretty and popular? Santana is worse for being a bully yet never really faces any real backlash from her bullying or consequences past a brief apology that's usually forgotten by the next episode. In fact the only reason Finn outed her was because she was just constantly, insistently harassing him in a really vile way that would have made many other people stop going to school in order to avoid it. (Not excusing his outing her by the way, just noting that the bullying in the show was never really treated like a serious issue that could effect kids long after they leave school.)

Finn was totally wrong to out Santana, but Santana actually made him, when she callously insulted his weight. Tact is extremely important. If you don't have it, you can push someone to "that point." I know, when l taught my boss a lesson on why tactlessness and condescension is wrong. She once questioned me for putting black linens on the tables for the wedding reception instead of white, the correct/usual color (but in my defense, we usually put on black linens for *any* event, and I don't even generally set the reception linens). Oh, and she was upset I had signed up for a one-person shift. I'll admit, I am much better with a helping hand and guide, but come on, that's no excuse for being insensitive. One of our student leader's responsibilities is organizing who works which shifts on the schedule, and my boss scolded him for not noticing I had signed up for a one-person shift. When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt belittled by her. She said she didn't think so, was all "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen" (something like, that, so I'm not perfectly quoting her), and she told me I need someone there to give me instructions and guide me. I regretfully didn't stand up for myself because I was too intimidated But feeling resentfully brave and determined _this_ time, I decided to do what she did to me back to her. My college's disability services was hosting a program to educate and prepare disabled high schoolers who were considering enrolling here. We caterers were serving the food, and every time I saw my boss talking to a high schooler (who wasn't physically disabled), I would immediately go over there and either *a.* tell my boss she's needed somewhere or there's been a situation, or *b,* offer _my_ help to the kid. My boss eventually concluded that I was deliberately trying to keep her away from the disabled students, and she insisted I tell her what was going on. I acted like I had no choice and "admitted" I was trying to prevent her from potentially saying anything offensive to the learning-disabled kids. I acted like I was trying to protect them because I wasn't sure she would be 100% respectful; that I worried she might say something condescending, even if unintentionally. When she expressed her offense at such a judgmental, faithless perspective, I reminded her what she said about me when I signed up for the said one-person shift, and how _that_ was a motive to prevent anything similar happening to the other disabled learners.

Glee has a tendency to approach issues with the mentality “it’s a serious accept for when it’s not”, and the Britney Spears 2.0 episode is a sign of that. Season 2 and we loved Britney and did a cameo, now we’re making fun of one of her lowest public moments? In a tribute episode no less?

the Coach Beiste situation is one of the worst representations of trans people in a show that tried to portray it as positive. It completely destroyed the character and made no sense narratively. While Unique was more accurate to how things would have been (even closely matching my own high school experience) i think if they wanted to change Beast's character, it would have been better to reveal her to be a butch lesbian

The outing of Santana by Finn and the handling of Brittney’s learning disability were both pretty horrific. Also Mr. Shuester was a fucking creep. I thought it at the time and I still think it today. He was fucking creepy with more than one female student, and putting the weed in Finn’s locker was played as funny, but it was not. He was no better than that Sandy guy who was openly played as a predator like that was some kind of joke. Sofa king gross, all of it.

Finn outing Santan was dick move, but she wasn't innocent in this either. She was making back handed comments not only to him but to Rory as well, after Mercedes & Shelby told her that was enough after the Dodgeball game. Finn was in wrong for what he did, but so was Santana.
@BlackRoyalty-hh8tb
@BlackRoyalty-hh8tb Год назад
@@omarcogle1965 making a few rude comments is nowhere in the same level as outing someone who’s in the closet and then gaslighting the situation by saying “everyone already knew, so who cares”. Especially considering that Santana’s abuela, someone she loved dearly disowned her for it.
@omarcogle1965
@omarcogle1965 Год назад
@@BlackRoyalty-hh8tb It was still bullying regardless on her part, and it was more than just a few rude comments. As I said, Finn outing her was still a dick move, but that still didn't excuse her to make back handed comments about Finn's weight and telling Rory to ship himself back to Scotland, even though he's Irish. I know her Abuela's old school, and it was messed up that she disowned Santana until 3 Seasons later, when Brittany tried to be the Olive Branch.

Kurt had more problems than just biphobia. He also was super predatory towards Finn and not respectful of Finn's heterosexuality. Then when Finn got mad about it, Finn got in trouble, not Kurt. More than a year later Kurt's dad finally brought it up again and admonished Kurt for his behavior, but it was a single line that was very easily missed, and Kurt didn't grow as a character, he just was into Blaine instead.

So let me ask you this. Kurt had a huge crush on Finn therefore he went for it 🤷🏽‍♀️ doing thing she thought would get Finn to possibly like him now Rachel also had a huge crush on Finn and went to great lengths to get him including telling Finn he wasn’t the father despite that not being her place and more but I bet you ship Finchel right ? And see no problem with Rachel doing what she did ? Correct ? But it’s wrong when Kurt did it because he’s gay so what he’s doing is wrong and gross because Finn doesn’t swing that way
@kodahansen8080
@kodahansen8080 Год назад
@@kaitlynwalker8953 It's wrong when Kurt does it because there is no situation where Finn falls in love with him because Finn isn't gay. It was gross, but not because Kurt's gay (I'm gay), it's gross because Kurt refused to accept anyone else's sexuality. It would be just as gross if Finn had pressured Kurt to date girls.
@kaitlynwalker8953
@kaitlynwalker8953 Год назад
@@kodahansen8080 So you answered my question then it’s wrong bc Kurt is also a guy and it’s okay that Rachel did all the drastic things she did to get Finn because she’s a girl. Regardless on if you’re gay yourself or not you see it the same way someone that’s most likely homophobic does. You see Kurt who’s got his first crush and would love to have Finn as his boyfriend despite knowing he mostly likely won’t get Finn he still tries anyway and leaves it be in the end. Then you see Rachel who doesn’t give a crap that Finn has a girlfriend and goes on two dates with him and kisses him not once but twice and then proceeds to do all possible to find out if he is actually the father of his girlfriends baby. Rachel then tells Finn that he isn’t the father simply so that she can have him to herself. Now if Kurt had done all the want crazy drastic things to get Finn and even possibly had a shot would be STILL be wrong ?? Or would you think it’s okay bc he has a mega crush on this boy who he may have a shot with

I don't agree that the character having the right reaction and making the right conclusions in the end shows if the subject was handled poorly or not. This is a reality that gay guys can be biphobic or that there is transphobia or that some teenagers woud high five you if you had a Ryders experience. And most of the time these people will not be enlighted at the end of the day, they will still think the same. Showing that every time a person admits they were wrong about some subject is just not true. I think it is better to show the reality of things and viewers will judge some of the individual behaviors, showing everyone as saint who always knows better in the end is not realistic.
