I distinctly recall that playoff game in 1995 when he tossed 4 INTs and the Lions were slaughtered by the Eagles. And doubly pouring salt into the wound, the Eagles QB in that game was Rodney Peete, who they'd dumped for Mitchell. And Peete had a career day in that game.

The list is without the REAL worst free agent signing ever. Lazy job by NFL Films. On the recommendation of their starting quarterback, Carson Palmer, the Cincinnati Bengals signed Antonio Bryant on March 10, 2010, to a four-year contract worth a reported $28 million, along with multiple incentives. They signed him without giving him a physical. It turned out, he had a microfracture in his left knee. The Bengals released him on Aug. 29 and Bryant stole a $12 million signing bonus without ever playing a single down.

The things people don’t know or remember about Scott Mitchell are 1). He had a MONSTER year when Lions signed him in ‘95 2). There were no other free agent QBs available to sign. Detroit won a several team bidding war for Mitchell just because he filled in for Marino for 6 or 7 games and did....pretty okay.
@75aces97
@75aces97 6 месяцев назад
I remember it. Free agency was new, so it took teams to get the hang of it. Also, yes, there are always teams that need a quarterback and there are just never enough decent ones to go around. Mitchell wasn't great but when your most recent options are Rodney Peete and Andre Ware almost anyone else looks better. If not the Lions some other team would have paid him.

Amen emmitt smith the guy with five all pro lineman in front of him in Dallas proved what he could do with an average line . Barry Sanders could’ve easily beat the great Walter Payton’s record but he had way too much class and retired. Emmitt smith was an average running back with a great line . Way overrated as a running back .

I remember Desmond Howard. He was a great return man with the Packers. Because he could work with how the Packers blocked at the time. Also, all he did there was return punts and kickoffs. He was not a starting receiver. He wasn't going to be a receiver until he learned the job. He left before that happened, and was a flop. I remember seeing him on a TV show complaining about only be a return specialist.

The worst thing about the Larry Brown and Alvin Harper deals is that it was part of the process that dismantled dominant Cowboy teams. And Oakland compounded their mistake while further tearing up Dallas by signing Russell Maryland in 96. Those players couldn't be the man for bad teams elsewhere but they certainly could have continued to be part of an exceptional team in Dallas if they had stayed.

You just made me remember something hilarious when I was younger around eight of my friends did a fantasy football league every year for almost a decade. I had one friend who kept bugging us to jump in for 3 or 4 years in a row but the only way he could was if one of the guys dropped out which finally happened after the fourth year. the thing was he loved video games but knew nothing about actual football or Sports in general the year was 2005 or 6 or something like that. all he knew was madden in 2000 & he knew it inside out. Of course he ends up getting the first pick in the draft and even today almost 20 years later I can close my eyes and see the entire moment vividly when we started the draft and he walked back into the room from the kitchen died his cigarette out looked at all of us and with a look of complete confidence as he banged his fist onto the table he said.... "I'll take DAVID BOSTON baby!" For the next five or six seconds there was complete silence in the room and aside from my friend shall we I don't think anybody smiled drop their call or move the muscles as he glanced around it all of us with a huge smile on his face thinking he had just made the pck which locked the championship down for him without a doubt. I could just be remembering you this long but I'm I was the one who finally broke the silence by making that noise you made when you feel your cheeks with air and blow them out before breaking into one of those fits that goes on so long it actually hurts. Everyone immediately followed prompting Joey to look at us all with complete shock and be interning red as he said what's wrong? he's the best receiver in the game? that's a good pick isn't it? I'm not going to go into David Boston details but I'm sure everyone understands that even in his heyday which had passed by this point he was maybe a 4th round pick it was just a hilarious moment and my friend dropped out after that first year so thanks for the donation Joey. Edit When I originally wrote this comment I had just started watching the video and had absolutely no idea that David Boston was on this list!!!! LMAO

It’s hard to ‘raise mediocre talent to another level’ when your laying on your back. I’m not a Jets fan but I felt bad for Neil O’Donnell that year. We would all count out loud until the first defensive player got a hand on him, rarely got past 3. The guy couldn’t even get his passing arm up before he was sacked. That offensive line let him get beat to death then they dared questioned his toughness. It was a QB slaughter no matter who the Jets O-line faced. The only one who took pleasure in O’Donnell’s o-line death squad-if they were trying to get him killed, they couldn’t have done more-was my husband…the life long, die hard, there’s only one team…you got it…Steeler’s fan. If you mention O’Donnell to this day, that man will go off in a tirade. He has never, will never, get over those two interceptions which were so bad with no Steeler in sight, my darlin’ insists O’Donnell was paid to throw the game. I’ve never heard him say that about another player in any sport. Ewwwww, a blast from the past…I feel a BAD MOON RISIN.

Franco Harris ended up in Seattle at the end of his career and was never heard from again. Marcus Allen managed to hang on for 5 more years in KC but never had over 900 yards in a season with them. And Roger Craig bounced to the Raiders and ended up in Minnesota for the end of his career. For every case of a late career revival for a player like OJ Anderson, or John Riggins there far more endings like Earl Campbell in New Orleans or OJ Simpson in San Fran.

Smith's 2nd season with AZ was actually not as bad as this video depicts. By no means was Smith the same as he was back in Dallas, but he rushed for just under a thousand yards behind one of the worst ranked offensive lines in NFL history. I don't know if he really deserves to be on this list.

Yeah, most of the clips they showed of him playing poorly were because his line completely blew their blocks and he got smoked in the backfield. Kind of hard to rush effectively when your O-Line gives the D a free line into the backfield every play.

Interesting at the 6:00 that guy says Scott Mitchell was the most valuable QB statistically in 1995. It is interesting because he went 32-12 TD-INT that year. Ten years later, Carson Palmer had the same numbers and led the league with TD passes and TD-INT ratio. And as the league has evolved, the passing gets better each year. So for Mitchell to have the same amount of success as the best QB statistically ten years later is quite remarkable.

@Fries As an Eagles fan my favourite Kotite moment was after we beat Buddy Ryan's Cardinals to go 7-2, he said, "People complain about my coaching but my record speaks for itself". They proceeded to lose out, 7-9, and Goodbye Rich Kotite. Hello Ray Rhodes. Fun fact: many Pro Bowlers key to the 4 consecutive Conference Championship appearances Andy Reid gets credit for, Dawkins, Taylor, Vincent, Staley, Mayberry, Tra Thomas, Trotter were all Ray Rhodes era picks and signings.

I think it's funny people see these on RU-vid and think they are new. Did you not watch NFL network when you were a kid?
